We can’t thank you enough.

Who is a “Good Life Giver?” You are.

You are a caring and compassionate supporter of the children and young adults of St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House. You make a critical difference to the programs and services at the heart of our mission. Because of you, we are able to provide quality care within a homelike environment so each person here can achieve his or her fullest potential. To provide that care, we need to raise nearly a million dollars each year through contributions to the Home. We are very grateful to you and to all of our many incredible Good Life Givers who gave so generously in 2017. Everything that happens here at St. Mary’s and The Albero House is for the benefit of the 100 children and young adults who live here. Throughout this report, you will see just some of the ways that your generosity touched the lives of these individuals over the past year. Thank you for providing the children and young adults with a good life. In deep gratitude,

H

amda grasped a brush. With a little help, she carefully dabbed purple paint on the wings of a butterfly. Hamda was among a group of children who decorated pottery at Color Me Mine with our good friends from We Promise Foundation. Later in the summer, kids attended Camp Horizon because of the Foundation’s continued generosity. A longtime supporter of the Home, We Promise gave St. Mary’s a $27,000 grant for camp.

hen Girl Scouts Emersen Miller and Morgan Lynch toured St. Mary’s with their troop, they got an idea: Create a camp for the kids. During Camp Aloha, children painted, tried out musical instruments, displayed their fashion sense and enjoyed other activities. The fun camp fostered a connection between the kids at St. Mary’s and their peers in the community. Congrats to Emersen and Morgan for earning the Girl Scout Silver Award for organizing the five-day camp.

Kids Fling into Spring, Fête Fall

Ambassador $1,000 - $4,999

T

he children and young adults, their families, staff and friends from the community celebrated the start of autumn with our annual Fall Festival. Jeremiah enjoyed the face painting. Other kids and guests checked out the crafts station and a petting zoo or munched on popcorn and cotton candy. Earlier in the year, the kids similarly heralded a different change of season with our Spring Fling. Both events are always free and open to the public.

alim and other children enjoyed aiming for strikes during the Rotary Club of Hampton Roads’ Annual Bowl-A-Thon. The kids, a grandparent, club members and St. Mary’s staff competed in two teams. Each team took a round. Thank you to the club for supporting St. Mary’s for more than 15 years! And special thanks to the club’s Joe Mulkerrin for treating the kids to pizza.

K It’s Fall, Y’all Helps Provide Loving Care

R

achel, who lives at The Albero House, and her parents were among guests who enjoyed bluegrass music and family friendly activities during It’s Fall, Y’all. Because of generous sponsors and donors like you, our event raised more than $40,000 to help individuals like Rachel receive the loving, complex care they need. Thank you to our sponsors, including lead sponsor PRA Group and food partner Baker’s Crust. And thank you to everyone who came out and made the event a great success! Save the date: Our next It’s Fall, Y’all will be Sept. 21, 2018, on the grounds of St. Mary’s. (photo courtesy of Hampton Roads Photography)

ids, staff and friends experienced an enchanting holiday treat: a visit from Richmond Ballet. Two company dancers dressed in costume from "The Nutcracker" demonstrated ballet movements and a former dancer read from her book, "Richmond Ballet The Nutcracker, as told by the Sugar Plum Fairy."

Teens, Volunteers Dance at Prom

Changemaker $250 - $499

T

yquawn and other teens got the royal treatment when they dressed up for their prom in May. They danced the afternoon away in our Atrium and also had fun posing for silly photo booth snapshots. Thank you to our Auxiliary Board for providing tuxes and dresses. And thank you to the many staff members, plus volunteers from Grassfield High School and LifePoint Christian Fellowship, who worked hard to make this annual rite of spring so fun!

Silas has lived at St. Mary’s for almost three years.

Auxiliary and You Help Create a Good Life

A

As soon as a beaming Colton made his entrance, he was surrounded by people eager to greet and hug him, including his parents. Colton, who lives at The Albero House, was an honored guest at the St. Mary’s Auxiliary Gala and Auction on April 1, 2017, at the Peter G. Decker Jr. Half Moone Center in Norfolk. Colton and other individuals who live at St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House are benefitting from more community outings and much-needed medical equipment because generous sponsors and donors like you helped St. Mary’s Auxiliary Board raise $80,000 from the event. For the seventh year in a row, presenting sponsor Checkered Flag donated a car for a raffle to conclude the Gala. The raffle raised $23,000, with the 2017 silver Toyota Corolla going to Cathy Engesser of Virginia Beach. The Gala included a passionate speech from Jen Cameron, whose son, Silas, lives at St. Mary’s. The family’s decision to bring Silas to St. Mary’s has enriched his life, Jen told the crowd. Silas, now eight years old, attends school all day and enjoys field trips and recreational therapy programming, his mother said. He also has an entire team pushing him to reach his full potential, she said. Jen thanked the staff for taking such good care of Silas. “There is nothing that touches a mother’s heart more than when people love your child and you can see and feel it,” she said. She also thanked people like you who support the children behind the scenes, through their gifts of time or money. “You help these kids live a good life,” she said. The Auxiliary Board has been helping to provide a good life to children for more than six decades. Among other things, the Board funds respiratory therapy vests and tuxedos and other items for our annual prom.
