Overview
Lather Salon is an edgy salon that successfully keeps its feet on the ground and works with men and women of all ages. With a contemporary look and feel and exceptional work, makes for a salon a cut above the rest.
Challenge
Design a complete brand for Lather Salon including, printed promotional materials, clothing and a website. The design should encapsulate the salons personality, architecture and essence. The design should allow the consumer to experience the salon through the printed material and website.
Solution
The essence of the salon was captured in print and web, through the use of color, shape and precision, three essentials in a great "do". The color was drawn from the location itself, the shape was inspired by the unique architecture of the building and the precision in the illustration and layout were essential as well. In addition, the website was created for maximum usability and aesthetic appeal.

ABOUT LATHER
We opened the doors to Lather, a Salon in June of 2010, and brought a breath of fresh air to the cozy, wood-shingled house we call home. Our open layout and ample natural light give the salon a clean, modern feeling and are a few of the things we get the most compliments on – aside from our killer hair skills, of course. We love it here, and we know you will, too. Come in, get pampered, and see for yourself
OUR PRODUCTS
Lather, a Salon carries the elite Aquage/Biomega line of hair products for women and men. Why only one line? Why else – it works, and we love it. We believe that, whatever your hair needs, Aquage has a product for you. Having trouble finding that product? All of our stylists are well-versed in the line and can recommend what’s best for not just your hair type, but your personality and time commitment as well.

TWO: Toile IDENTITY Package Design
Overview
A clothing and accessory store for women who care equally as much about the environment and the impact their consumer purchases make on the earth as they care about how they look.
Challenge
Design a brand for Toile, keeping the environment and the confidence of it's customers in mind.
Solution
The removal of this negative impact played a large role through out the design, by means of a recurring negative shape seen through out the printed pieces. In addition, building shapes and combinations with the design was important, hinting at building an outfit; one difference can change the whole look. This design uses bright colors and bold shapes as well, capturing the essence of confidence.
THREE: Saint Augustine Freedom Trail EDITORIAL
Overview
Most people come to Saint Augustine Florida to see the "Nations Oldest City" and all that lies with in. They take all kinds of tours to learn about the history of this little city, but most of them do not realize the more recent history of the city, and the impact that it caused. The civil rights movement played a huge part in the history of Saint Augustine, but it is looked over on tours, for it was a dark and draining time. However it was the goal of my colleague Megan Towle and I to bring this history forth and offer it to tourists. The Freedom Trail was brought to be by the 40th ACCORD, to commemorate the civil rights demonstrations in Saint Augustine and for those who risked their lives in order to attain civil rights.
Challenge
Construct a coffee table book, as well as a brochure where interested individuals could educate themselves about the participation of Saint Augustine in the civil rights movement, as well as a brochure that could be taken on the tour of the Freedom Trail. The design should hold the seriousness of the matter to the highest level of importance, and highlight the violence and wrong doings of the American majority.
Solution
The design of the book, is unorthodox, like the purchaser of the book them self, and holds the darkest secrets of Saint Augustine and its former people. To start the book has two books with in it, one black, and one white. Part one of the book opens from the front, and when the user is finished it is flipped over and there starts part two. The colors used are black and red, and there is an overwhelming white presence to symbolize the beliefs most whites had that black people weren't equals. The red is used to symbolize bloodshed as well as highlight the violence in the images and text. The red is used sharply, and frequently but does not take away from, but instead supplements the images. Finally a brochure created in the absence of my partner, was designed for the flexibility of moving from one trail location to another.
FOUR: Gang Gang Dance, Saint Dymphana ALBUM AND POSTER DESIGN Illustration, Package Design, Photography
Overview
Saint Dymphana, an album created by Gang Gang Dance is an experimental rock album released in 2008. The album has many different styles of music throughout, and is constantly surprising the listener. With industrial hints and atmospherical breaks, this album is unlike many others.
Challenge
Create an album cover, insert, vinyl labels and posters for the album Saint Dymphana that visually portrays the music on the album. The viewer should experience the music through sight first, followed by sound.
Solution
The album cover and insert were designed after intense research of the albums music, every choice was made based on an emotion or thought that the album brought forth. The Imagery on the outside case was based off the industrial, metropolitan and atmospherical essences of the albums melodies and tones. Subsequently, the delicate lines seen throughout the outer case resemble music lines that have a life of their own, and mimic the music's tempo and emotion. The inside sleeve pushes the two different influences of the album, through imagery of a busy city and then a snow scene. Finally the labels for the vinyl piece itself, are images taken from the inside and outside sleeves, but are stripped of the chaos, and come to a soft conclusion, as the album itself does.

FIVE: The Chicago Diner IDENTITY Apparel, Environmental Design, Illustration, Package Design
Overview
The Chicago Diner is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Chicago and is known for its delicious interpretation of many dishes in the vegan form. Quality of the product is of the utmost importance, as is customer satisfaction as well as loyalty. The diner also ventures out with in Chicago to many events as an independent food vendor.
Challenge
Create a brand as strong as the ratings of the diner, keeping in mind that quality and interpretation is important. The current color scheme is red, white and black and should remain the same as they were chosen based on the architecture and decor of the building. In addition the tagline "Meat Free Since 83'" should be kept, as it represents the loyalty to a meat free lifestyle that is so important to the diner.
Solution
The inspiration for the design of the brand was taken from many things such as: the facade of the building, the retro feel of the current location, and the color scheme from the previous brand. The logo is an illustrated interpretation of the facade of the building with added signage that was also designed for the rebranding. The design of the menu was loosely based on a retro style menu, with bold unique fonts, and arrows that hint at the past. However, these elements don't overwhelm the design as it is to be specifically about the dishes offered. Finally the food trucks design was to keep the essence of the diner, and be recognizable as belonging to the diner, which was accomplished by using the same bright red color all over the truck, along side the unique signage.

SIX: Swank's Chow PACKAGE DESIGN Branding, Illustration
Overview
Swank's Chow is a concept idea for a line of cat food that offers a cool, and trendy appeal. The brand includes wet and dry food, as well as a line of treats. In addition, since cats can be very particular about trying new food; the dry food comes in two sizes, a monthly amount as well as a sample amount so no food goes uneaten.
Challenge
Design a brand of cat food that is both trendy and cool, and has an appeal to cat owners who want what is the best for their cats, but also enjoy the humor in this brand of swanky cat food. The design should be simple and to the point, and the packaging should be easily stow-able.
Solution
The solution of the logo is a swanky, personified cat that is held with in a frame, and the colors are muted and hint at a black tuxedo, while that cat is wearing a white bow-tie. A banner hanging from the logo changes colors throughout the design to color code the different flavors of the food. The simplicity of the packaging was inspired both by the detail of the logo as well as the desire to cut out all of the unnecessary parts of mainstream food packaging.

SEVEN: Settlers of Catan GAME DESIGN Branding, , Illustration. Screen Printing
Overview
Settlers of Catan is a board game that was created in 1995, where the players become settlers and have to gather and trade resources in order to build items that award them points. As the players settlements grow additional points are awarded , and at a set number of points a player will win the game.
Challenge
Redesign the board game with simplicity in mind, taking each of the game pieces and stripping it of its current branding and detailed illustration and revert to the primitive object of the game which is gathering and trading resources.
Solution
The solution to this challenge was very simple, take the resources gathered and traded within the game and exert them as the only design elements in the logo, box and each of the playing pieces. Each of the resources: brick, wood, sheep, wheat and ore were illustrated by hand and then later screen printed onto the wooden board that was cut by hand. The wood board was inspired by the resource, as it is one of the first resources needed to build in the game, in addition something at this time would have been made out of wood. The cards and additional pieces of the game were very simply designed, mimicking what a game may have looked like in a more primitive time.

EIGHT: Lagunitas Brewing Company PACKAGE DESIGN Branding, Illustration, Screen Printing
Overview
Lagunitas Brewing Company which was founded in 1993 is known for its interpretations of traditional beer styles, and apathetic descriptions. The company is very bold and outlandish as well, and has a very popular reputation nationwide.
Challenge
Create a beer sampler that pushes the bold and outlandish style of the company.
Solution
The six beer labels and carrying case were designed with the utmost attention to the outlandish/artistic style of the brewing company. Each label was first screen printed, scanned and turned into a label depending on the beer style, additionally a unique font for each label was chosen based on the name of the beer. The font for the style of beer remains the same throughout the labels, as does the appearance and location of the logo, and a map of the United States/California/Lagunitas. In addition the shape of the labels also changes from label to label. Finally the case is a simple design, a window to each of the beer styles can be seen at the bottom of the case, and the names of each of the beers are represented on the front and back of the case, while the sides contain a description of the beer styles.
NINE: Spread the Word to End the Word ADVERTISING Apparel, Illustration, Web
Overview
Spread the Word to End the Word is a collaborative campaign between Special Olympics and Best Buddies. The campaign was designed to spread information about the connotation of the word 'retard', regardless of the way the word is used. In addition the campaign teaches individuals the proper terminology for people with intellectual disabilities and encourages those individuals to pledge to stop using the word, and to ask others to do so as well.
Challenge
Create a new design for the campaign that is both informative and more inviting than the current one. The spread the word message should be clear but the rest of the message should be uncovered once the viewer investigates the piece of work, and it should spark conversation amongst people.
Solution
The solution for the campaign is a watercolor series that is a representation of people coming together to spread the word to end the word. The colors are bright and the style is inviting and exciting. The main message is legible but the information on how and what to pledge is smaller and requires an investigation of the piece. This decision was made based on the subject matter of the campaign, a sensitive topic that requires research and close attention. In addition to the magazine ad there is a pandora ad, t-shirt and a patch. All of these pieces will start a conversation amongst people, and will encourage the pledging of all.
