HOW TO USE THE

MAP & GUIDE Choose a specific region. Select one of our 8 maps identifying 8 regions within Sonoma County. Choose a specific farm. Farm Trails Members are listed alphabetically at the beginning of our guide. The listing includes a page number where you will find contact information and a brief description of what the farm has to offer.

Choose a specific product. Turn to our Product Index pages at the back of our guide. Products are listed alphabetically, with farms that offer that product. The color square before the farm name identifies the region in which the farm is located; the number specifies the exact location of the farm on the map. Throughout our Guide there are informational pages about events (the

upcoming Gravenstein Apple Fair celebrates 100 years), historical pictures and articles, a Calendar of Events (showing where we go to promote our members), recipe pages that will curl your senses. Please remember our advertisers when you are purchasing, we greatly appreciate their support. We thank our farmers and all of our members that contributed toward our new Map & Guide. Agriculture is “alive and well” in Sonoma County.

onoma County encompasses a wide variety of landscapes: from oak-studded hills to flood plains, from redwood groves to windswept beaches. Sonoma County Farm Trails members can be found in all of these places, offering agricultural products with their own sense of terroir—flavors and textures unique to their soil and microclimate.

Blueberries hug the cool-weather coast, while tomatoes grow sweet in the heat of inland towns. Sebastopol is an excellent fruit-growing region, renowned for the delicious, early-producing Gravenstein apple. Dry Creek Valley, outside of Healdsburg, is known for its peaches. And while Petaluma was once the center of the California egg industry, today it offers a diverse array of agricultural products, from lavender to goats and cheese. Exquisite local honeys, fresh greens and rich orange-yolked eggs can be found everywhere.

onoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District—Keeping land in the hands of agricultural producers: helping make farmland available for the experienced, the new and the next generation. The District has protected more than 10,000 acres, from west of Petaluma to the Pacific Ocean, for dairies and livestock ranches. In total, the District has protected approximately 33,000 acres for agricultural use through a ¼-cent sales tax approved by the voters in 1990 and reauthorized in 2006. Working Hard to Protect Sonoma County’s Rural Legacy

Bianchi: The Bianchi family has been milking cows for four generations. They have a large dairy west of Valley Ford in the rolling coastal grasslands of Sonoma County. The property has buildings that have been a part of the dairy as long as the family has farmed the land. The Bianchi Dairy also boasts a brand new cheese-making facility, the future of the family business. In 2002, the Bianchi family worked with the District to protect their 631-acre farm with an agricultural conservation easement. The conservation easement assists in keeping the land in agriculture by restricting non-compatible uses such as residential development and subdivision. In addition, the family was able to use the proceeds of the conservation easement to help fund the construction of their cheesemaking facility, which produces artisan cheeses. The Dairy industry is

changing and one of the best ways to stay in the business is to expand into niche markets like organic or locally-made products. The Bianchi family has operated a successful dairy business in Sonoma County for generations and continues to find ways to be viable in an ever-changing industry. Vegetables: Wayne James, his wife Evie, and his sister Lee, have grown vegetables in Sonoma County for years. Their farm, Tierra Vegetables, provided one of the first community-supported agricultural programs in the county. However, the demand for their produce and products meant that they needed additional land to farm. The cost of land in Sonoma County doesn’t make it easy to expand your agricultural operation. They began to look for other options. In 2001, the District advertised the opportunity to lease District owned lands for agricultural production and as a result Tierra Vegetables was selected to make its new home on the District’s 18-acre Haroutunian North Property. The District is leasing the land in hopes to one day resell it to an agricultural buyer with a conservation easement in place. The value of the conservation easement will be subtracted from the purchase price making the land more affordable to the farmer.

OUR MISSION

THE HISTORY OF FARM TRAILS Putting Sonoma County on the Map Since 1973

Sonoma County Farm Trails supports sustainable agricultural diversity in Sonoma County by creating public awareness to ensure the preservation of Sonoma County’s rich agricultural heritage for generations to come.

By Bruce Goetz, Diane H. Davis and Tina Castelli

I

t was close to 40 years ago when a feasibility study done by U.C. Extension proved to our local supervisors that it was time to recognize the importance of legal provisions for the growing and selling of agricultural products on and from the land. Eventually the government granted the right for local farmers to have the choice of selling their goods to large packing companies or to sell it themselves. This inspired a group of Sonoma County farmers and county farm advisors John Smith and Stanley Coates to meet and devise a plan to market directly from the farmer to the consumer. On March 15, 1973 the group filed articles of incorporation as a non-profit and Sonoma County Farm Trails was born. Their plan was to promote Sonoma County agriculture with a helpful map showing consumers how to find the farmers. The concept was immediately supported by 95 family farms. Special thanks to Sonoma County Farm Bureau who provided legal council and County Supervisors who provided seed money through bed tax funds. Farm Trails was able to become self sufficient thanks to apple farmer, Tom Symes who came up with the brilliant idea to resurrect the Gravenstein Apple Fair which helps fund the organization even today. This year the fair is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the first Gravenstein Apple Show in Sebastopol. The real strength of the organization has been its membership and its talented individuals and volunteers. Over the years Farm Trails has inspired several other organizations, including the development of the Harvest Fair, Sonoma County Farmers Markets, Select Sonoma and has been the model for similar organizations across the country. Farm Trails was into “agritourism” before

there was such a word. Now more than ever, the public values buying fresh, local products. Farm Trails will always strive to be that connection to buying direct from the farm through our ever improving Map & Guide, educational events and marketing promotions. Small family ventures flourish because of the foresight and wisdom from the past – and the bounty is available to anyone who follows the Farm Trail. Meet the people who toil in the soil and graze and raise livestock – opening their gates and lives to neighbors and visitors alike. Members offer classes, tours and picnic sites. Rent a sheep or a goat to mow your weeds, hire a horse-drawn carriage for your event. Someone will come and remove that bee hive for you. And there are many places where you can “pick it yourself.” The products, services and hospitality are amazing. Fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts, animals, bees, flowers, pumpkins, Christmas trees, nurseries, herbs, plants, trees, wine, ale, meats, olive oil and all related products and services are here in beautiful Sonoma County. Come visit, and enjoy the land we love by following the Sonoma County Farm Trail.

Chickens in the Garden

Chickens are fun and easy to raise in your own backyard, Garrett’s carries all the supplies you

t Garrett Hardware you will find a flock of exotic chickens playing in the gardens. Every day they patrol through the plants eating every bug and snail they find. Because of them our gardens are pest and pesticide free. We started 3 years ago with four Mille Fleur chickens. Since then we have added Delaware, 10 lb. Brahmans, Marin Cookoo, Golden Wyandot, Cochin Bantams and Silkies. Kids and grown-ups love to bring vegetable scraps for the flock. Every day is a chicken side show, the load announcement when an egg is layed is one of my favorites. Many customers come reporting one of our chickens is sick, only to find out it’s only taking a sun bath, all stretched out on her side with wings spread.

Chickens at Garrett Ace Hardware will need to make a fine home for your own flock. Not to mention the wonderful fresh eggs you can gather every day. Drop by anytime and visit our flock, they love an audience.

Bear Foot Honey Farm

s a third generation beekeeper from an early age I realized how blessed we are to live in Sonoma County. A place I like to call “Our little patch of the Garden of Eden.” In my mind’s eye I of ten think of what it must be like for my “little girls,” the honeybees. They go through their lives working their tail off to produce some of the finest honeys around. Today, the “girls” struggle with many ailments that make their already hard life, harder. We at Bear Foot Honey Farm take a realistic approach to beekeeping utilizing the knowledge of current scientific research and 63 years as a beekeeping family. We love to talk about our “girls” and show the public how wonder ful they are to us, and the world around us. We offer bee tours, beekeeping classes, and honey tasting at our shop in Santa Rosa. We welcome you to visit and experience life inside the hives.

Bear Foot Honey Farm Baklava

As beekeepers we use honey in practically everything we consume, from lasagna to enchilada to my favorite cuisine of all, Greek food! Most people have heard of Baklava, it is this sweet desert with a honey twist that we invite you to experience.

elish Culinary Adventures stands out as the only “roving” culinary program that brings together talented chefs and fabulous cuisine at a variety of captivating wine country locations, including the beautiful Relish Culinary Center in charming downtown Healdsburg, to create one-of-a-kind hands-on and demonstration cooking experiences, culinary tours and other special events. Relish offers culinary events on a wide range of topics from wine country cuisine to ethnic specialties, farm-to-table cooking to home cheese making, food and wine pairing to children’s cooking workshops. In addition, Relish hosts events that bring people together in the kitchen such as private cooking parties and corporate team-building events. All of Relish’s events feature locally-grown and/or organic ingredients whenever possible, illustrating the bounty of this wonderful region and leaving guests with a “sense of place” that is all about Sonoma County. A great example of Relish’s unique culinary events is its On The Farm classes where guests tour a local family farm and enjoy a cooking demonstration and dinner that features ingredients fresh from

PREPARATION 1. Combine the first 3 ingredients in

a medium saucepan over low heat; stir until honey dissolves. Increase heat to medium; cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer registers 230° (about 10 minutes). Remove from heat; keep warm. Discard cinnamon stick. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. 3. Place hazelnut-chocolate spread in a microwave-safe bowl; microwave at HIGH for 30 seconds or until melted. Combine hazelnuts and next 5 ingredients (through salt). Lightly coat a 13 x 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Working with 1 phyllo sheet at a time (cover remaining dough to prevent drying), place sheet lengthwise in bottom of prepared pan, allowing ends to extend over edges of dish; lightly brush with butter. Repeat procedure with 5 phyllo sheets and butter. Drizzle about ¹/³ cup melted hazel-

the land. Every August Relish teams with chef John Ash and Farm Trails members Gayle and Brian Sullivan of Dry Creek Peach & Produce to produce an annual dinner On The Farm at the peak of peach season. This dessert recipe was the sweet culmination of one of these peach dinners savored among the heirloom orchard in beautiful Dry Creek Valley. Please visit relishculinary.com for detailed information about cooking classes and other events.

Pavlova with Peaches and Blueberries courtesy of Chef John Ash

Chocolate Baklava INGREDIENTS ¾ cup honey ½ cup water 1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick 1 cup hazelnut-chocolate spread (such as Nutella) ½ cup toasted hazelnuts, coarsely chopped ½ cup roasted pistachios, coarsely chopped ¹/³ cup blanched toasted almonds, coarsely chopped ¹/³ cup toasted walnuts, coarsely chopped ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¹/8 teaspoon salt Cooking spray 24 14x0-inch sheets frozen phyllo dough, thawed ½ cup butter, melted

nut-chocolate spread over phyllo. Sprinkle evenly with one-third of nut mixture (about ½ cup). Repeat procedure twice with phyllo, butter, hazelnut-chocolate spread, and nut mixture. Top last layer of nut mixture with remaining 6 sheets phyllo, each lightly brushed with butter. Press gently into pan. 4. Make 3 lengthwise cuts and 5 crosswise cuts to form 24 portions using a sharp knife. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes or until phyllo is golden. Remove from oven. Drizzle honey mixture over baklava. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cover; store at room temperature.

INGREDIENTS 5 egg whites, room temperature 1 cup bakers or superfine sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 2 teaspoons lemon juice, divided 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups peeled diced ripe peaches, cut in ½-inch dice 1½ cups fresh blueberries 1 cup heavy cream powdered sugar for dusting

Bear Foot Honey Farm 4372 Sonoma Highway, Suite D Santa Rosa, CA 95409 Tel: 707.570. BUZZ

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° F. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Still beating, slowly add the sugar until the mixture is thick and glossy. Quickly beat in the cornstarch, 1 teaspoon lemon and vanilla. Line a baking sheet with parchment and draw a circle approximately 8 inches in diameter. Pile the meringue into the circle and hollow out the center about halfway down to form a “nest.” Place in oven for 10 minutes then turn heat down to 275° for 1½ hours. Turn off oven and leave pavlova in with door closed until oven is completely cool, at least 2 hours or overnight.

Meanwhile mix the peaches and blueberries together and stir in remaining teaspoon of lemon. Whip the cream until thick. Spread the cream in the cavity of the pavlova, top with the fruit and dust with the powdered sugar. Allow to sit for an hour at least before cutting into wedges and serving. Overtime the meringue will soften and change so you can decide which texture you like best. and Sonoma County have to offer. Widely known for its location on the banks of the Petaluma River, its picturesque downtown filled with beautifully preserved iron front buildings and its leafy neighborhoods lined with stately vintage homes, Petaluma provides a glimpse of the 1800s, while it thrives as a modern city. The downtown, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is the core of the community some call “America’s Quintessential Hometown.” Classic films, including American Graffiti, were shot on Petaluma’s downtown streets. The Petaluma Art Center, a regional exhibition and learning space, marks Petaluma as a destination for art lovers. Art and antique

galleries, fine restaurants and lively events like the Annual Butter and Egg Days in April make the historic downtown an attraction for people of all tastes. Docents from the Petaluma Museum, housed in the 100-yearold Carnegie library, guide weekly tours (May through October) of the historic downtown districts. Museum exhibits tell the story of Petaluma from its early days as the “egg basket to the world,” to its place in the fast changing world of the 1960s and ‘70s. Historically, with its proximity to a navigable river, Petaluma evolved not only as a producer of food, but as the central commercial trade center for Sonoma County produce, wine and other products that made their way to San Francisco and beyond. Now, Petaluma and the surrounding countryside - dotted with small farms and pastures - has made a name for itself as an epicenter of sustainable farming, slow food, and artisan and handcrafted products that food, wine and micro-brew lovers flock to the area to experience. Special events like the annual Artisan Cheese Festival in late March, the Art and Garden Festival in July and the Taste of Petaluma in September draw crowds from near and far. Everyone loves the Petaluma Farmers’ Markets, open on Saturday and Wednesday, May-October, in historic downtown. The tours of Cowgirl Creamery’s state-of-the-art handcrafted cheese making facility in Petaluma are another favorite. Food growers adore Baker Creek Seed Bank where they can peruse more than 1,200 heirloom seed varieties from 70 countries and locally grown garlic, herbs, and spices as well as locally made continued on page 66

pproximately 50 miles north of San Francisco, you’ll find a vibrant region overflowing with all you love about California. Welcome to the action of Sonoma County, where everything comes together. Wine country and farm country, redwood forests and big business, the serenity of rivers and lakes and the excitement of tourism and nightlife. There are 3 cities in what is called the Santa Rosa Valley. Starting in the south is the small charming village of Cotati, a main street town with small local restaurants and boutiques. Cotati is also home to the famous annual Accordion Festival. Sonoma State University sits

26

just out of the City limits of both Cotati and Rohnert Park to the east. Just a little further north is the suburban community of Rohnert Park first established by Waldo Emerson Rohnert, founder of the seed giant, CC Morse Seed Company. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the seed factory was closed down and Rohnert Park was born as the first “Neighborhood Unit” community where no child would have to walk more than one-third of a mile to school. At the north of the region you will find the bustling city of Santa Rosa, with a Victorian historic homes neighborhood and a thriving downtown, lined with intriguing shops and restaurants

L

Story by Pam Williams & Sebastopol Area Chamber of Commerce

ong before it had an official name, Sebastopol was home to Native American Pomo and Miwok tribes. Then came the Spanish explorers who later settled on land grants, two boundaries of which met near present-day Main Street. They were named Rancho Canada de Jonive and Rancho Llano de Santa Rosa. Irish immigrant and San Francisco surveyor Jasper O’Farrell liked the area and traded some Marin County land for the Jonive Rancho. He named it Analy Township after his County Annaly homeland. The missing ‘n’ in Analy was

simply a recording error, but for some reason it was never corrected. The California Gold Rush brought more settlers to the area. In 1855, Joseph H.P. Morris filed a claim for 120 acres of the Llano de Santa Rosa land and moved his trading post to what would become a center of commerce. Morris called the fledgling town Pine Grove, but since another Pine Grove in California was already incorporated a new name was required. Why “Sebastopol?” The name was chosen when a feud between two Pine Grove citizens mirrored a story making worldwide headlines at the continued on page 60

CHEESE TRAIL

O

By Clark Wolf

ne of the many delicious secrets of Sonoma County Farm Trails is just how many world class cheesemakers we have right here along our farmland coast. In fact, this is where American cheesemaking got its rebirth in the late 1970s when a talented woman in Santa Rosa—named Laura Chenel— started making world class goat cheeses that changed the way America eats. These days we can dig in and savor the wares of some classic, long-term talents and visit the more recently acclaimed artisans that have created what the late Johnny Apple wrote about in the New York Times—as a “New Normandy North of the Golden Gate.” Truly, these are treasures of the table. Start in what I like to call Sonoma— the—town, a few blocks off the classic main square and visit the home of one of this county’s and this country’s true masters. Ig Vella—at Vella Cheese—is no less than a national treasure, who, as his father Tom, before him, has given us many greats. His Dry Jack, rubbed with cocoa, black pepper and veggie oil is world famous and award-winning but every cheese he makes—Mezzo Secco, Oro Secco, Raw Milk Cheddar, Toma, Asiago, Italian style Table Cheese, Romanello Dulce—has depth and body and benchmark quality that transcends the humble nature of this ancient food.

Vella Cheese 315 2nd Street East Sonoma, CA 95476-5710 (707) 938-3232 www.vellacheese.com

Then swing over and up to the pastoral heart of grasslands just outside of Petaluma where Cindy and Liam Callahan, mother and son, make sheep and Jersey cows milk cheeses in the style of Italy but in the spirit of their patch of green. From snowy fresh Fromage Blanc and creamy Crescenza to sharp and peppery Pepato and San Andreas, along with buttery

Carmody, named for the road below the farm, their collection has range and subtlety, with back-stories and smiles at every bite.

Bellwether Farms (707) 763-0993 www.bellwetherfarms.com

Then wind your way up to the Gravenstein Highway—named for the fragrant apples that still dot the lower hills and flatlands—and slip over to Redwood Hill Creamery. The original dairy, now the family home, is perched on a lovely hill up Green Valley Road, overlooking Iron Horse Vineyard. But these days a former apple processing plant is now where lovely

cheeses—softies like Camellia and the new Cameo, firm and goaty—er Bouchinette—light and sometimes herbed little tubs of fresh chevre ready for market along with their lovely Kefir and savory yogurts.

Gravenstein Apple Fair

THE GRAVENSTEIN APPLE FAIR The Sweetest Little Fair in Sonoma County Story by Tina Castelli, Apple Fair Manager

his year in 2010, the Gravenstein Apple Fair will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first Sebastopol Apple Fair held back in 1910. The fair presenters, Sonoma County Farm Trails and the Apple Core Committee made up of Farm Trails members and local volunteers have an especially sweet little fair planned for this year. The event will include historical displays and artifacts from the Sebastopol Historical Society Museum like photos, event programs and trophies from some of those early years. There will be a re-creation of the original front entrance of the 1910 fair, which was then called the Gravenstein Apple Show. Luther Burbank’s 1916 Willys-Knight will be on display, currently owned by Guy Smith. The story is told that the famed horticulturist drove the car back and forth from his home in Santa Rosa to his experimental farm in Sebastopol with the top down, his white hair flowing behind him. The fair is named after that tart but sweet little apple called the Gravenstein. The Gravenstein apple was first brought to Sebastopol along with the Layton berry back in 1869 when William J. Hunt crossed the plains to a better life out west. Luther Burbank is said to have assisted with propagation of the Gravenstein starting in 1885 when he planted 18 acres in his Sebastopol experimental orchard and farm. The success of the

Gravenstein spread and by the turn of the century apple orchards were all across the West County. Family names like Barlow, Oehlmann, Roberts, Hallberg, Walker, Hurst, Martinelli, Kozlowski and Dutton over the years helped create the major West County Apple industry which at its height in 1945 totaled over 14,000 acres of apples, according to the Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner’s office. Sebastopol staged its first Apple Show in 1910. The event was held on Main Street in a tent across from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railway Depot. This annual

Today, the Gravenstein Apple Fair is brimming with tradition. This country fair still showcases the Gravenstein featuring fresh Gravenstein apples, Gravenstein applesauce, apple juice, apple pie, apple fritters, candied apples and Chef demonstrations with recipes you can make at home using the famed apple. Visitors experience the feeling of an old time country get-together, you can throw darts at apples, ride in a wagon pulled by plow horses or watch farm life demonstrations like milking a goat or shearing a sheep. Local farmers, artists and community groups sell everything from apples and garden art to hand thrown pottery and gourmet goodies. There are fun activities, like the Hay Maze

bash was an August exhibition showcasing apples and apple products during the peak of their season. The fair annually sported huge custom structures for front entrance gates and elaborate apple displays by local packing plants, canneries and apple drying companies. Processing and marketing apples had become big business. Sculptors were hired to build one-quarter scale buildings and even a locomotive out of whole fresh and dried sliced apples. Those early fairs had a carnival like atmosphere with one of the crowd favorites being “The Joy Wheel,” where men would sit in the middle and ladies around the outside of a spinning

Entertainment is abounding with two stages of live music from popular bands playing bluegrass, country, rockabilly, Cajun and more. What kind of a fair would it be without contests - local home cooks can enter a pie in the Apple Pie Baking contest sponsored by the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce or adults and children can enter the Pie Eating Contest, the no-hands Caramel Apple Eating Contest, Applesauce Drinking Contest and the Apple Juggling Contest. It may have been 100 years since the first Sebastopol Apple Fair but the traditions are still alive. As it still does some 90 years later, spring burst out as if in a dance: Thousands of prune trees with pale blossoms looked like so many ballerinas twirling in frothy tulle. Golden mustard flowers glowed among chocolate brown vines still to leaf. All summer, the hot afternoon air helped the green grapes swell to juicier sweetness each day: even the red wine grapes start green only turning to red as they ripen… Summer gardens were picked early before the day’s heat set in: Kitchen tables overflowed before breakfast with sweet, fat tomatoes and even sweeter corn, and salad makings of lettuce and beets and cucumbers. Juicy stone fruits— peaches, nectarines, apricots and cherries— were set on platters next to strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, watermelons and a rainbow of plums in shades of yellow and green and red and purple. Before long, canning cupboards were full of berry jams and sweet pickles and row after row of vegetables in jars in

almost every color of the spectrum…Small but sweet table grapes jostled for the sun alongside purple morning glories and climbing roses in white and red. Tiny, potent jasmine blossoms scented the air. By fall deep red peppers, gleaming purple eggplants and huge rippled pumpkins glowed in every garden. Baskets of walnuts were collected and the last dark ripe figs of the year laid gently into kitchen towels. It was hard to keep count of the many varieties of apples that had been picked and stored away in barns and attics. And as the mild warm winter began, the last of the vegetables would be dug up and the final bales of oats, alfalfa, and wild hay stood alongside boxes of horse corn and sacks of walnuts. And now it was time to rest...

Early Seasonal Life on Local Farms & Vineyards excerpts from when the rivers ran red by vivienne sosnowski …By Thanksgiving of that year, most of the vintage from that bumper crop was already tucked into wineries, starting on its tranquil journey and growing richer and more complex each day. Local churches celebrated the annual harvest with song and prayer and displays of the bounty of the land: spaces around fonts and lecterns were stacked with sheaves of bronze wheat, bundles of golden sunflowers, piles of pumpkins and squash, baskets of apples and tomatoes and peppers. During every mass, golden marigolds and the last of the pale summer roses sat in big jugs on altars and were tied with big bows of ribbons around pulpits.

Restaurants want consistency and that’s what I deliver.

The year in Wine Country had begun, as ever, with early spring rains that fell in soft, windblown curtains across the sparkling…rivers…and creeks. Reaching the sea full to their banks, the flow of the largest rivers was the first sign that the summer’s irrigation, so necessary to sustain millions of grapevines, would run reliably. The rivers gurgled through lush grasslands then rolled under woodlands of oak and pine and forests of firs and redwoods. Steelhead and Chinook salmon fought the currents to find warm shallows to lay their eggs….And above all that were the sounds of ducks, great blue herons, red-tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and white egrets heading to their nesting grounds.

ettlers came to this region in search of their fortune in the Gold Rush and found it instead in the fertile Green Valley of Sonoma County, where Graton is located. With lush little valleys and redwood studed hillsides Graton is home to several multi-generational apple farmers, offering over 25 varieties of apples during the summer months including the prized Gravenstein. Take some time and sit a spell with these folks who are full of local history and willing to share their stories of the local apple industry. Graton is also part of a premiere wine growing region and has two Zagat rated restaurants located along its two block stretch of downtown. Oak Grove School in Graton was founded in 1854, making it one of the oldest school districts in California. Don’t be startled if you are there at noon when the town siren still marks the hour from the Fire Department. Travel a little further west and you will find Occidental, a small town nestled in the redwoods of Sonoma County between Freestone and Monte Rio. The town of Occidental is made up of both old-timers and new residents. Aside from its excellent restaurants for a town of its size, Occidental is home to unique gift shops that sell everything from crystals, herbs and handmade soaps to toys and garden statues.Tennis courts are located in downtown Occidental and the area is very popular with cyclists and car clubs for its beautiful, challenging routes between the coast and redwoods. The Bohemian Highway, arguably one of the most scenic drives in the whole state of California, runs right through

the town of Occidental. This ten-mile highway winds through lush, towering redwoods, past rocky ravines and peaceful farmlands. The Bohemian Highway is one of the first areas to be settled in the region and has a climate perfect for exploration, buffered from the ocean fog and

Occidental is also home to a local Bohemian Farmers’ Market every Friday and is near several award-winning wineries that are open to the public. Other nearby attractions to delight the senses include a Japanese inspired spa and a rare plant nursery that offers some of the most rare and exotic flora in the United States. Recreational activities in the area include horseback riding, hiking and biking and white water rafting on the Russian River. Remember – Occidental is small, but is quite the gem if you’re looking for a relatively undiscovered, quiet getaway.

he Sonoma Coastal Route extends from Tomales in the south up to Bodega Bay in the north. All along this winding stretch of Highway 1 is some of the most beautiful coastal scenery you will find. While the north coast weather can be foggy in the summer, it usually burns off by midday and the cool ocean breezes make the Sonoma Coast a haven for visitors seeking to escape the inland heat. At ocean’s edge you will find long sandy beaches below rocky bluffs filled with natural arches and secluded coves.

hotel, a bed & breakfast inn and a few eclectic shops, cafes and wineries. The farm land around Valley Ford is vast, with cattle and lamb farmers that are still operating in their fourth and fifth generation. Valley Ford is also famous for Christo’s Fence which passed through the town and the private ranches of 59 families along 24.5 miles. It is considered the largest art project in Bay Area history although it was only up for two weeks back in 1976. All the materials were turned over to the farmers and some still offer viewings during special events.

The fishing villages that sit along the shoreline are currently home to commercial fisherman, but were once bustling ports exporting farm produce such as potatoes during the mid-1800s. You may see one or two of the majestic vintage potato barns still standing as you drive through the countryside.

Farther north is the fishing harbor of Bodega Bay, home to a contemporary commercial fishing trade that harvests albacore, Chinook salmon, halibut, rockfish, Dungeness crab, sole, and more recently sea urchin. Bodega Bay was made famous in 1961 when Alfred Hitchcock chose the quiet little town for the filming of his movie, “The Birds.” Now Bodega Bay is a great place to visit for whale watching, hiking, fishing, surfing, bicycling and overnight camping is still available on a few beaches.

Tomales is a beautiful little town that sits along the shoreline of Hwy 1 and overlooks the Point Reyes National Seashore. For nature lovers, there are hikes, kayaking in the bay and Dillon Beach nearby. Stop and sit a spell near Hog Island and Nick’s Cove and view the seals and roosting brown pelicans. Visitors can dine in wonderful restaurants and cafes, tour the community with its Victorian architecture and Queen Anne cottages.

Both communities are nestled along the Russian River, a waterway that overflows its boundaries in the winter and produces an abundance of fertile, loamy soil making this area ideally suited for farming and growing wine grapes. Appellations include the Russian River Valley in the South, Alexander and Dry Creek Valley areas to the north, and the Chalk Hill appellation in the rocky foothills to the southeast, each with its distinctive terroir, worldclass wines and fine varietals.

is a fun dining and shopping destination made up of townhouses and storefronts, all nostalgic re-creations of classic 19th century architecture. The Town Green is also the setting for year round activities, such as a Tomato Festival, Summer Concert Series, Kids Movie Series, art shows and Shakespeare on the Green. Sports enthusiasts gather in Windsor for the Vineman/Ironman Triathlon, Wings Over Wine Country Air Show and the annual Hot Air Balloon Classic or go hiking in the local regional parks. Healdsburg, only five miles north of Windsor at the intersection of three gorgeous valleys, is at the hub of a region known for Mediterranean-style wines. It is the definition of a small Americana village with its bustling central downtown plaza, an active historical Museum and the finest Wine Library in the country. The historic town plaza is home to fantastic shopping and fine wine tasting experiences as well as local art galleries, world class lodging and 4-star restaurants. Local activities include a Tuesday Concert Series, a popular Jazz Festival, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day parades and Annual Antique shows. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy swimming, fishing and canoe trips along the Russian River as it winds around the town.

A Whimsical Point of View on Growing & Making Wine Here Story by Rodney Strong Vineyards

2010-2011 Sonoma County Farm Trails Map & Guide

S

onoma County soils are kind of rocky, and full of reminders of our crazy geological past. Can you imagine Sonoma used to be under the Pacific? And that volcanoes once buried everything here in ash? A walk through the vineyards might reveal sea-shell fossils or chunks of volcanic glass. But best of all, vines love to put roots down in this ancient soil, along with fruit trees, lettuce, blackberries, corn, walnuts, tomatoes, and a few lucky people too. Hey, you are what you eat. A New Englander would probably be bored with the summers in Sonoma; another beautiful day, everyday. Vines wake up with the sun, or at least the sunlight filtered through cool fog the Pacific Ocean sees fit to blanket us with each night. It’s just a matter of time before the fog retreats to the breakers, and cloud free skies prevail under a warm sun. We dress in layers around here, and by the time the sun sets into the Pacific, that cool foggy air begins to drift back in, obscuring the stars and ensuring

excellent sleeping weather for vines as well as humans. The vines respond with bold juicy fruit character while retaining excellent color and a delicate acid balance. Humans just smile. Making wine from such a delightful place as Sonoma County requires technical skill and sound judgment. The skill is in when to pick the fruit, how to ferment it, how long to age it, and when to bottle it. The sound judgment is about when to step out of the way, and let nature do its thing. That’s natural winemaking, and that’s at the heart of every bottle of Sonoma County wine. After all, everything is already in place, from ideal soils and weather to the intrinsic charm that pervades just about everything here, especially grape vines. The result is a downto-earth, fruit-forward, smooth, rich and juicy wine, bursting with pure deliciousness. Makes you kind of thirsty, doesn’t it? Enjoy Sonoma County. Enjoy the wine.

ive a Kid a Dollar at the Windsor Farmers Market—then watch them head to the closest farmer to buy something that may surprise you. Since the market was formed in 2001, youngsters have learned how to talk to a farmer, how to buy produce, how to cook what they purchased, and how important community is to their town. In 2007 the market formed “The Kids Dig It Club,” where a permanent Charles Schulz “Joe Cool” Snoopy statue stands at the entrance to the market. Rainjoe, with his colorful apron full of veggies, reminds kids to shop farmers markets and fill your plates with the colors of the Rainbow. A dollar or maybe two will do just fine. —Glenda Castelli

hy has it become increasingly important to know where our food is coming from and how it has been produced? It is you, the consumers, who wish to seek safe, wholesome and nutritious foods, and you who place a strong value on our local supply. The consumers are concerned both about the impact their food choices have on our environment and the topic of sustainability. You may think back to “The Good Old Days” when you reminisce about Grandpa’s Farm, where you drank the milk from your own cow, made your own bread from your own wheat, and grew enough vegetables and fruits to fill the cellar to the brim. Well worry no more, your local Farmers Market lets all your concerns come full circle.

Sonoma County, with a population of over 450,000 residents, has over 13 market locations which have been certified by the Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office. The majority of markets are open from May to November, with three markets open year round. Each market is orchestered by what the community and market manager senses.

Some markets allow only Sonoma County produce, while others allow produce within the 150 mile radius. Farmers Markets give you a reason to get out of bed and find that special seasonal surprise that was not there the week before. A Farmers Market fosters a strong sense of community, and provides a safe and fun gathering place for producers, neighbors, friends and families. Aside from the bountiful produce, customers enjoy a plethora of Photo: Courtesy Rick Tang other savory delectables, such as baked goods, pastries, meats, and cheeses. It’s also a great venue for local artisans to display and sell their handmade crafts. Most markets have chef demonstrations, music, and special speakers. Elaborate Festivals, held by some markets, celebrate the Zucchini, the Tomato and the Pumpkin. All markets are proudly “kid friendly” where the young and old are encouraged

to participate in the shopping and learning of where their food comes from. Who makes all this hard work run so smoothly? Fact: Local markets operate under the supervision of a Board of Directors, and are run by a Farm Market Manager. Members of the various market boards are Certified Producers themselves. This may sound easy to you, but it’s truly amazing how one empty city street or parking lot can transform into a sea of colorful beauty in less than two hours. It takes an army of dedicated farmers who have been up since dawn picking and cleaning their produce for the market. Now that you know a little more about the Sonoma County Farmers Markets you probably think how did Farmers Markets come to exist and who started this phenomenon? It happened in 1977, and by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. They established regulations that allowed the operation of Certified Farmers’ Markets in California. This may sound easy to you, but farms must abide by these regulations—regulations that say the grower must grow the product himself and be open to inspection at any time. In addition to farm inspections, all Farmers Markets are equally inspected. The regulations allow Certified Producers to be exempt

from standards for packing and containers, which is a big plus to farmers. By allowing farmers to market their agricultural commodities direct to the consumer instead of packing houses, they could make more than pennies on the dollar. The project was a big hit! Farmers could now afford to buy a better tractor, buy a new pair of overalls, and pay their gas and electric bill on time. With a more diverse group of growers in the market, consumers now benefit by the increased access to fresh, local, affordable, and healthy sources of produce. The benefits of Certified Farmers’ are far-reaching. There is a direct connection between the agrarian and urban communities, strengthening each and uniting them both. Farmers’ Markets give the consumer and farmer the opportunity to meet face-to-face, creating conversations about how their food is produced, as well as the opportunity to learn about agricultural issues, farming practices, and challenges that affect our local farmers. In the late 1880s, Luther Burbank’s quote hit the nail right on the head. “What a joy life is when you have a close working partnership with Nature.” Mr. Burbank knew that Sonoma County was the perfect place to make this happen—and it has, regulations and all.

If you're a farmer, or if you just want to support local agriculture, Sonoma County Farm Trails welcomes you.

SEBASTOPOL continued from page 30

time—the siege of the port of Sebastopol on the Black Sea during the Crimean War. The name stuck and the City was incorporated in 1902. Orchards and vines flourish in Sebastopol’s rich soil. By 1910 Sebastopol became world famous for its years of record apple production. Between 1885 and 1926, hybridization pioneer Luther Burbank made his own mark in the world of horticulture, developing hundreds of new plant strains and varieties on his 10–acre experiment farm. Today you can still visit Luther Burbank’s farm along with other agricultural attractions. Wineries, butterfly gardens, a carnivore plant nursery, pumpkin patches and yes, apple farms are just minutes away from downtown. A variety of this amazing West County bounty comes to Sebastopol’s Town Plaza farm market each Sunday between April and November. In year’s past the area has been rich in hops, cherries, prunes, apples and vineyards. Sebastopol is still known today for its varieties of apples, especially the Gravenstein, its vineyards, producing some of the best wines in the region and for its organic crops that provide many acres of sustainable products. Visit Sebastopol, the city in Sonoma County known for Local Flavor. Global Vision.

SONOMA COUNTY’S RURAL LEGACY continued from page 11

of Rohnert Park in the early 1900s. Richard Hope Crane arrived in California from Missouri for the Gold Rush in 1849. He had been a farmer his whole life, like all of his forefathers. He mined gold for several years before arriving in Sonoma County in 1852. Oliver Crane, the son of Richard H. Crane, developed the Crane Melon by crossing several varieties of melons, including a Japanese melon, a white melon, a Persian melon and an ambrosia melon among others. The Crane melon averages 4-7 pounds, is round like a soccer ball, and has a light orange flesh that is highly aromatic. Since then five more generations of Cranes have continued to

dry farm this distinctive melon only grown in this unique soil. In 2006, the Crane family worked with the District to ensure that 80 acres of their land would be preserved forever. Working with the District to protect their land can give the family peace of mind that it won’t be subdivided in the future but also makes it more affordable for the next generation of the Crane family to inherit the land even in with Sonoma County’s high land values. Although the Crane Melon has been a constant, the Crane family continues to change with the times. Today, their farms also grow yellow-meat watermelons, heirloom tomatoes, honey, walnuts and wine grapes.

started as a logging community. Over time, logging reserves dwindled, causing the loggers and their families to determine other means for income. During the late 1800s through the turn of the century, established families used the rich soils of the land for private vegetable gardens and animal husbandry. These private farms eventually turned into apple orchards, hop

fields, award winning tobacco fields, presentday champagne vineyards, and also catered to tourists and vacationers. As the old logging railroad gauge was upgraded to a passenger rail, visitors from the San Francisco area flocked the small River Communities. Many came for the activities on the River (canoeing, swimming, etc.), hunting and fishing and the live music continued on page 66

SONOMA TO KENWOOD STORY continued from page 19

buffers the area from the chilling influence of the Pacific. Marine layers and cooling wind from both the Los Carneros region in the south and from the Santa Rosa plain in the north help to balance the Valley’s tendency toward Mediterranean dryness. From Glen Ellen to Sonoma, soils are nourishing as they are varied. The Valley floor harbors loamy clay and nutrient-rich mineral deposits, while higher elevation slopes are rocky and well-drained. Few agricultural areas boast such diversity. As testament, almost every kind of grape varietal has been grown in the region, but vineyards are just the beginning of what thrives

here. Ancient olive orchards, heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, citrus trees, a myriad of salad greens, squash of all shape and size, stone fruits, nuts, lavender and other herbs, just to name a few, can all be found in the area of Sonoma and Glen Ellen. Livestock is also plentiful, from neighborhood chickens to goats, sheep, cattle and alpacas. The delicious chevre, farm-fresh eggs or woolen goods you find at local markets and grocers can often be traced to vendors less than a few miles away. Sonoma’s pastoral vistas and navigability make it a perfect area for exploring local farms, so come explore this cozy cornucopia.”

that delight casual diners and epicureans alike. Famous chefs flock to the area—not only for the vineyards, but for all the abundant local produce, dairy, meat, and seafood. the Rose Parade celebrating its 116th year and a Downtown Farmers Market Celebration every Wednesday night during the summer with local food and entertainment. Whether you’re into safaris or spas, golf or gardens, Snoopy or Syrah– or all of the above – you can have it all in the Santa Rosa Valley. and dances. The area experienced its peak of activity during the 1920s, 1930s and after World War II with an influx of big band music, nightly dances, the annual “Pageant of Fire Mountain” performances, Stumptown Daze Parade, Monte Rio Water Carnival, and bowling tournaments, to name a few. During the Great Depression, the railroad company pulled-out the Guerneville gauge in 1935. With the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1936, vacationers were more likely to drive themselves to the Russian

66

River Resort Area rather than endure the 2-hour train ride, thus closing the chapter on railway transportation. Since then, the area continues to sustain as a resort region with many old resorts still in operation, as well as fine dining and local entertainment. An easy weekend vacation from the San Francisco Bay Area with beautiful natural surroundings and world-renowned Sonoma Cuisine, the Russian River Resort Area welcomes you and your family.
