The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Coming into this weekend’s play tied with the Seawolves at eighth place in the conference at 4-8, the Tritons have suffered losses in five of their last six games. UC San Diego’s only victory came against Cal State L.A. on Jan. 13, a 76-73 triumph in double-overtime. The Tritons have lost three consecutive games, two of which UCSD lost by a combined three points. Christian Hatch leads the Triton offense, averaging 14.2 points per game, complemented by Casey Ryan (12.5 ppg) and James McCann (10.1). Ryan is the CCAA’s best rebounder, grabbing 9.5 boards per contest (171 total, 21 more than CSULA’s David Norris, who is second in the CCAA in rebounding). Sonoma State is 16-11 against UC San Diego all-time and 15-6 in the Pat Fuscaldo era. The Tritons, though, defeated the Seawolves earlier this season, 74-63, in La Jolla.

vs. Cal State East Bay PIONEERS Saturday, January 29 • 7:30 p.m.

2-14, 0-12 ccaa

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Struggling to find their first conference win this season, the Pioneers haven’t won a game since a 77-66 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 11, 2010 -- a string of 10 consecutive games. The only other win came on Nov. 16, 2010 against Academy of Art, a 68-65 win in overtime in Cal State East Bay’s season-opener. The Pioneers are last in the conference in scoring (60.2) and are at or near the bottom of nearly every statistical category in the CCAA. However, three players average in double-figures -- Mark Samuels (12.8), Roshun Wynne (11.9) and Will Friedman (11.8). Wynne has proven himself as a fiesty defender, as he is second in the conference in steals with 2.4 a game. Sonoma State earned a 68-62 win in Hayward earlier this season, but Cal State East Bay (Hayward) is 31-28 all-time against SSU.

Sonoma State Returns Home For Next Four Games

After a brief two-game road swing to Southern California, the Seawolves return home to open up a four-game homestand at The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park. Sonoma State will welcome UC San Diego on Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Seawolf Sports Network. Sonoma State has played the first half of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule and sits tied for eighth place in the standings at 4-8 with UC San Diego and Cal State Stanislaus. Conference wins came against Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. Should Sonoma State remain as one of the top eight teams in the conference after the final 10 games of the regular season, the Seawolves will make an appearance in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the third straight season.

Washington Nets Career-High 25 in Upset Over Cal State L.A.

Ben Washington scored a career-high 25 points on 9 of 12 shooting and Steven Pratt sealed the victory with four free throws down the stretch, giving Sonoma State a huge 69-61 upset victory over host Cal State L.A. on Saturday night at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles. It snapped a four-game losing streak and it was the first time in 11 games this season that Sonoma State won after trailing at halftime.

The team has been around since 1963 and is in its 43rd season, sporting a 493-626 record (.440 winning percentage). 17th-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, SSU’s seventh men’s basketball coach, is the program’s winningest coach, topping former head coach Dick Walker, who led the Cossacks to a 190-243 record from 1978-1994.

Hitting on 17 of 35 three-pointers in his last six games, Will Olsem has made a living from downtown in his first two seasons with Sonoma State. A career .440 shooter from beyond the three-point arc, he hit his 100th career three-pointer in the Jan. 8 loss to Cal State San Bernardino. Olsem is hitting 47.6 percent of his shots from long range this season (39 of 82) and is third on SSU’s all-time list for best three-point field goal percentage in a career.

2010-11 Sonoma State Men's Basketball Fuscaldo's Record at SSU Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo Year Overall Conference Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2010-11. In his previous sixteen years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 223-207 overall and 170-140 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA. In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year. Before arriving at Sonoma State, Fuscaldo was the head coach at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur) in Belmont. There, he turned a struggling program into a Northern California Athletic Conference playoff team in just three years. The Argonauts won just six games in his first season, but increased their victory total to ten the following year and 14 the next to earn a NCAC playoff berth and give Fuscaldo strong consideration for conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame, Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at Skyline College, serving two stints, 1985-86 and then 1987-91. While there, Skyline reached the California State Final Eight in 1990 and 1991, won Coast Conference championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and posted a cumulative record of 105-23. Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1986-87, and he has also coached at San Jose State and San Francisco State, where he received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Psychology-Administration. He received his B.A. in Physical Education from San Francisco State in 1983. As a player, Fuscaldo was a two-year performer for Eastern Connecticut State College in Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School in Colchester and Greenwich High School in Greenwich. Pat is married to former Stanford All-American and ABL player Molly Goodenbour, now the head women’s basketball coach at UC Irvine.
