Northwest Nazarene, led by sixth-year head coach Tim Hills, split its seasonopening games at the Boedecker Classic in Colorado last weekend. The Crusaders opened their 2010-11 campaign with a victory over UC Colorado Springs on Friday, but fell to Fort Lewis College the following day. NNU is coming off a season in which it finished with a winning overall record, but finished sixth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings at 7-9. Brian Barkdoll and Drew Elsinger lead Northwest Nazarene on offense, averaging 11 points per game through the team’s first two contests. Darious Walker is also averaging in double-figures with 10 points per game. Sonoma State is 1-1 against Northwest Nazarene all-time -- the Crusaders defeated the Seawolves, 68-63, in their last meeting (11/21/2008).

vs. Central Washington WILDCATS Saturday, November 27 • 3:00 p.m.

2-0, 0-0 gnac

Johnson Sports Center at Nampa, Idaho

Central Washington, led by 16-year head coach Greg Sparling, has been one of the toughest teams in the West Region in recent years. The Wildcats have appeared in the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in each of the past three seasons and four times in the past five seasons. In the first two games of the 2010-11 season, CWU has outscored its opponents 204-99, including a 65-point drubbing of Quest (BC) University in the season-opener on Nov. 13. Jamar Berry leads the prolific offensive attack, scoring 51 points in his first two games in the Crimson and Black, including a 28-point performance coming off the bench against Walla Walla on Nov. 20. Coach Sparling has used just eight players so far this season, as all are averaging at least 20 minutes a contest. Sonoma State has defeated Central Washington just once in five games all-time -- a 81-74 upset of the then13th-ranked Wildcats just two seasons ago (11/28/2008). Seawolves Grab Ron Logsdon Classic Title at Rohnert Park For the first time in the 10-year history of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic, two teams emerged with an undefeated record, but host Sonoma State earned the title by way of point differential, after defeating Notre Dame de Namur (89-75) on Friday and Dominican (95-64) on Saturday at The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park. Minnesota State (Mankato) also earned two victories last weekend with wins over the Argonauts and the Penguins. Five players scored in double-figures in Friday’s win over NDNU, including senior forward James Sandoval, who dropped in 20 points and corralled 10 rebounds. In Saturday’s blowout of the Penguins, Sonoma State had six players in double-figures. It was the fourth time in the history of the tournament that SSU captured the tournament title. Sandoval Returns to SSU Lineup, Named Logsdon MVP After taking a year off from basketball, senior forward James Sandoval returned to the Seawolf lineup last weekend and earned the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Most Valuable Player award. He averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds, including his outstanding performance in Friday's win against Notre Dame de Namur with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot .636 from the field on 14-of22 shooting and also handed out five assists. Olsem's Living Downtown Just as he did last season, sophomore guard Will Olsem is making his living from beyond the three point arc. Olsem leads the CCAA in three pointers, nailing 9-of-16 in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic last weekend. He led all scorers with 20 points in Saturday's demolishing of Dominican, pouring in six three pointers. Olsem was second in the CCAA in made three pointers last season (71) and was third in three-point field goal percentage (.423). Sonoma State Picked to Finish Sixth in CCAA After finishing tied for sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings a year ago with a 10-12 record, Sonoma State was picked to finish sixth again, according to a preseason vote by the conference's coaches. The Seawolves are led by 17th-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, who owns a 223-207 overall record at SSU and a 170-140 mark in conference play.

More News and Notes 2009-10 In Review Sonoma State started the 2009-10 season off a bit slow, falling to 3-11 before the Seawolves bounced back to win eight of their last 12 games to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tourament for the second straight season. 2010-11 Sonoma State Men's Basketball Fuscaldo's Record at SSU Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo Year Overall Conference Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2010-11. In his previous sixteen years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 223-207 overall and 170-140 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA. In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year. Before arriving at Sonoma State, Fuscaldo was the head coach at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur) in Belmont. There, he turned a struggling program into a Northern California Athletic Conference playoff team in just three years. The Argonauts won just six games in his first season, but increased their victory total to ten the following year and 14 the next to earn a NCAC playoff berth and give Fuscaldo strong consideration for conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame, Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at Skyline College, serving two stints, 1985-86 and then 1987-91. While there, Skyline reached the California State Final Eight in 1990 and 1991, won Coast Conference championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and posted a cumulative record of 105-23. Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1986-87, and he has also coached at San Jose State and San Francisco State, where he received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Psychology-Administration. He received his B.A. in Physical Education from San Francisco State in 1983. As a player, Fuscaldo was a two-year performer for Eastern Connecticut State College in Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School in Colchester and Greenwich High School in Greenwich. Pat is married to former Stanford All-American and ABL player Molly Goodenbour, now the head women’s basketball coach at UC Irvine.
