After a season-opening loss to Chico State on Nov. 18, the Warriors traveled to Atherton and split two games at the Menlo College Tournament last weekend. Cal State Stanislaus earned its first victory of the season on Saturday with a narrow 65-64 win over host Menlo. Led by second-year head coach Larry Reynolds, the Warriors, who finished 10-17 overall and 6-16 in the CCAA last season, was tabbed to finish seventh in the conference this season, one spot behind Sonoma State, based on a preseason poll of CCAA coaches. Evan Scott leads the Warriors this season, averaging 12.3 points per game. Two others, Marcus Lever (11.3) and Dan Daviess (11.0), also average in double-figures. Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus split the season series last season, but SSU is 23-9 against CSUS in the Pat Fuscaldo era.

Art Acker Gymnasium at Chico, Calif.

The Wildcats will head into this weekend’s play at 4-0 this season, including a 64-59 season-opening victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Nov. 18. Ever since, Chico State, under the tutelage of third-year head coach Greg Clink, have notched victories over Bethany University, Northwest Christian and Dominican. Damario Sims earned the Mac Martin Invitational Most Valuable Player award last weekend in Chico after netting 9-of-16 three pointers -- he ended the weekend averaging 20 points on 61 percent shooting. The Wildcats were picked to finish a spot ahead of Sonoma State in the CCAA’s preseason coaches poll at fifth. Chico State finished 16-13 overall and 11-11 in conference play last season. Four players are scoring in double-figures this season, led by the 14.5 points from Sean Park -- Sims is the team’s second leading scorer at 14.0 ppg. SSU swept the season series last season and are 24-9 against CSUC in the Pat Fuscaldo era, winning the last three.

Sonoma State To Open CCAA Play This Weekend

Led by 17-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, the dean of coaches in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Seawolves will open conference play this weekend at Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and at Chico State (Saturday). Senior James Sandoval leads the team with 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

In Friday’s game against host NNU, three players scored in double-figures, led by the 20 of senior James Sandoval, but the Seawolves couldn’t overcome the hot shooting of the Crusaders, who hit on 59.6 percent of their shots. In Saturday’s loss to CWU, sophomore Will Olsem knocked down four three-pointers, and three others scored 10 or more points, but again Sonoma State couldn’t stop the prolific shooting of the Wildcats, who shot 57.4 percent.

Olsem's Living Downtown

Just as he did last season, sophomore guard Will Olsem is making his living from beyond the three point arc. Olsem leads the CCAA in made three pointers, nailing 13-of-22 this season. He was 4-of-6 from downtown in Saturday’s loss against Central Washington, leading the team with 15 points. Olsem was second in the CCAA in made three pointers last season (71) and was third in three-point field goal percentage (.423). The Seawolves also lead the conference in three-point percentage, converting 42.6 percent (29-69), 51 percentage points ahead of San Francisco State.

Sonoma State Picked to Finish Sixth in CCAA

After finishing tied for sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings a year ago with a 10-12 record, Sonoma State was picked to finish sixth again, according to a preseason vote by the conference’s coaches. Seawolves Grab Ron Logsdon Classic Title at Rohnert Park - Nov. 19-20

For the first time in the 10-year history of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic, two teams emerged with an undefeated record, but host Sonoma State earned the title by way of point differential, after defeating Notre Dame de Namur (89-75) on Nov. 19 and Dominican (95-64) on Nov. 20 at The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park. Minnesota State (Mankato) also earned two victories last weekend with wins over the Argonauts and the Penguins. Five players scored in double-figures in Friday’s win over NDNU, including senior forward James Sandoval, who dropped in 20 points and corralled 10 rebounds. In the Nov. 20 blowout of the Penguins, Sonoma State had six players in double-figures. It was the fourth time in the history of the tournament that SSU captured the tournament title.

Sandoval Returns to SSU Lineup, Named Logsdon MVP

After taking a year off from basketball, senior forward James Sandoval returned to the Seawolf lineup last weekend and earned the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Most Valuable Player award. He averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds, including his outstanding performance in Friday's win against Notre Dame de Namur with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot .636 from the field on 14of-22 shooting and also handed out five assists.

2009-10 In Review

Sonoma State started the 2009-10 season off a bit slow, falling to 3-11 before the Seawolves bounced back to win eight of their last 12 games to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tourament for the second straight season. However, Sonoma State lost to longtime-rival Humboldt State in the opening round of the tournament, 72-68, ending the Seawolves season at 11-17 overall and 10-12 in the CCAA.

2010-11 Sonoma State Men's Basketball Fuscaldo's Record at SSU Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo Year Overall Conference Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2010-11. In his previous sixteen years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 223-207 overall and 170-140 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA. In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year. Before arriving at Sonoma State, Fuscaldo was the head coach at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur) in Belmont. There, he turned a struggling program into a Northern California Athletic Conference playoff team in just three years. The Argonauts won just six games in his first season, but increased their victory total to ten the following year and 14 the next to earn a NCAC playoff berth and give Fuscaldo strong consideration for conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame, Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at Skyline College, serving two stints, 1985-86 and then 1987-91. While there, Skyline reached the California State Final Eight in 1990 and 1991, won Coast Conference championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and posted a cumulative record of 105-23. Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1986-87, and he has also coached at San Jose State and San Francisco State, where he received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Psychology-Administration. He received his B.A. in Physical Education from San Francisco State in 1983. As a player, Fuscaldo was a two-year performer for Eastern Connecticut State College in Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School in Colchester and Greenwich High School in Greenwich. Pat is married to former Stanford All-American and ABL player Molly Goodenbour, now the head women’s basketball coach at UC Irvine.
