Pioneer Gymnasium at Hayward, Calif.
After escaping with a 68-65 overtime victory over Academy of Art to open the season, the Pioneers suffered through a four-game losing streak, falling to 1-4. However, Cal State East Bay snapped the drought with a convincing 77-66 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday. The Pioneers will take on UC San Diego on Tuesday before hosting the Seawolves on Sunday. Mark Samuels leads the conference in scoring with 17.0 points per game, leading two other CSUEB players in double-figures -- Will Freedman (15.0) and Roshun Wynne (10.8). Cal State East Bay swept the season series with Sonoma State last season, both wins coming in overtime.
Sonoma State Travels East of the Bay on Sunday
The Seawolves will play two more games in December before returning home for a season-long five-game homestand on Jan. 2. Sonoma State will travel to Hayward on Sunday to face the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. at Pioneer Gymnasium. SSU will then wrap up its season-long seven-game roadtrip on Thursday, Dec. 30 at UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m.
Lumberjacks Power to Strong Victory Over Seawolves
Will Olsem and Steven Pratt scored 14 points apiece to lead Sonoma State, but the Seawolf defense couldn’t stop the high-powered Humboldt State offense, as the Lumberjacks dropped 96 points in a 96-82 conference win on Saturday night in front of 1,369 fans at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. Despite the 14-point loss, Sonoma State hit just under 50 percent of its shots, connecting on 48.4 of its attempts (30-62). Ben Washington hit half of his shots (5-10), including one three pointer for 12 points. Sterling Arterberry also added double-figures with 10 points.
Junior Steven Pratt is handing out assists left and right. He is second in the CCAA in assists with 37 (5.3 a game), eight assists behind conference-leader Jay Flores from Chico State. Pratt is currently 12th on the Sonoma State all-time list for most assists in a career with 182, which is 123 assists from the top of the list, held by Antoine Woods (305 in 1991-92, 93-94).

More News and Notes Seawolves Split On CCAA-Opening Weekend
On Friday, senior Matthew French led all scorers, dropping in a career-high 18 points, helping the Seawolves to a 64-50 victory over host Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. SSU led from start to finish, jumping out to a 32-13 halftime lead, holding its opponents to the lowest first half point total since 2008. Saturday was a different story, though, as host Chico State led for most of the way and held off a late run by Sonoma State for the 69-65 win.
Sonoma State Picked to Finish Sixth in CCAA
After finishing tied for sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings a year ago with a 10-12 record, Sonoma State was picked to finish sixth again, according to a preseason vote by the conference’s coaches. The Seawolves are led by 17th-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, who owns a 225-209 overall record at SSU and a 170-140 mark in conference play.
Seawolves Grab Ron Logsdon Classic Title at Rohnert Park - Nov. 19-20
For the first time in the 10-year history of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic, two teams emerged with an undefeated record, but host Sonoma State earned the title by way of point differential, after defeating Notre Dame de Namur (89-75) on Nov. 19 and Dominican (95-64) on Nov. 20 at The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park. Minnesota State (Mankato) also earned two victories last weekend with wins over the Argonauts and the Penguins. Five players scored in double-figures in Friday’s win over NDNU, including senior forward James Sandoval, who dropped in 20 points and corralled 10 rebounds. In the Nov. 20 blowout of the Penguins, Sonoma State had six players in double-figures. It was the fourth time in the history of the tournament that SSU captured the tournament title.
Sandoval Returns to SSU Lineup, Named Logsdon MVP
After taking a year off from basketball, senior forward James Sandoval returned to the Seawolf lineup last weekend and earned the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Most Valuable Player award. He averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds, including his outstanding performance in Friday's win against Notre Dame de Namur with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot .636 from the field on 14of-22 shooting and also handed out five assists.
2009-10 In Review
Sonoma State started the 2009-10 season off a bit slow, falling to 3-11 before the Seawolves bounced back to win eight of their last 12 games to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tourament for the second straight season. However, Sonoma State lost to longtime-rival Humboldt State in the opening round of the tournament, 72-68, ending the Seawolves season at 11-17 overall and 10-12 in the CCAA.

2010-11 Sonoma State Men's Basketball Fuscaldo's Record at SSU Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo Year Overall Conference Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2010-11. In his previous sixteen years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 223-207 overall and 170-140 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA. In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year. Before arriving at Sonoma State, Fuscaldo was the head coach at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur) in Belmont. There, he turned a struggling program into a Northern California Athletic Conference playoff team in just three years. The Argonauts won just six games in his first season, but increased their victory total to ten the following year and 14 the next to earn a NCAC playoff berth and give Fuscaldo strong consideration for conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame, Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at Skyline College, serving two stints, 1985-86 and then 1987-91. While there, Skyline reached the California State Final Eight in 1990 and 1991, won Coast Conference championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and posted a cumulative record of 105-23. Fuscaldo was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1986-87, and he has also coached at San Jose State and San Francisco State, where he received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education/Sports Psychology-Administration. He received his B.A. in Physical Education from San Francisco State in 1983. As a player, Fuscaldo was a two-year performer for Eastern Connecticut State College in Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Thomas Moore Preparatory School in Colchester and Greenwich High School in Greenwich. Pat is married to former Stanford All-American and ABL player Molly Goodenbour, now the head women’s basketball coach at UC Irvine.
