vs. Seattle Pacific FALCONS Friday, December 10 • 7:00 p.m.

2-2, 0-0 gnac

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Ranked as high as No. 5 in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll last week, the Falcons suffered a pair of road losses at the PacWest/ GNAC Challenge last weekend in St. George, Utah, dropping Seattle Pacific out of the Top 25 this week. The Falcons are led by fifth-year head coach Julie van Beek Heisey, who is just two wins away from 100 at SPU. A national powerhourse for years, Seattle Pacific has captured the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in seven of the last eight seasons and has appeared in the NCAA tournament in each of the past 14 seasons, making an Elite Eight appearance last season. Nyesha Sims averages 11.3 points per game to lead the Falcons and Melissa Reich drops in 10.5 points and grabs a team-high 8.0 rebounds a contest. Sonoma State is just 3-8 against Seattle Pacific all-time, as the Falcons have won four straight against the Seawolves -- the last SSU victory was on Dec. 8, 2006 in Rohnert Park (56-49).

vs. #14 Western Washington VIKINGS Saturday, December 11 • 7:00 p.m.

5-0, 1-0 gnac

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Vikings are ranked No. 14 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll due in part to an unblemished 5-0 record heading into this weekend’s play in Rohnert Park. Western Washington is led by 20th-year head coach Carmen Dolfo, who won her 400th career game earlier this season (403-157, .720) and is ranked No. 19 among active Division II coaches in winning percentage and No. 12 in victories. She has four players scoring in double-figures this season, including Amanda Dunbar, who scores 13.4 points per game, reaching double-figures in all five of WWU’s contests. Megan Pinske (11.6 ppg), Corinn Waltrip (10.8) and Lauren Hefflin (10.0) are all scoring 10 or more points per game for the Vikings. Sonoma State has won just one game against Western Washington in 13 games all-time, which was a 62-49 triumph on Dec. 8, 2007 in Seattle, Wash.

Sonoma State to Host CCAA/GNAC Challenge This Weekend

The annual California Collegiate Athletic Association/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Challenge is set to converge on The Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park this weekend, as four strong teams will battle it out. No. 17 Chico State and host Sonoma State will welcome No. 14 Western Washington and Seattle Pacific in a four-game round-robin tournament on Friday and Saturday. A schedule with links to live stats and video is available on page two of this release.

Last Friday, Sonoma State went on a huge 18-0 run midway through the second half, but host Cal State Stanislaus chipped away at the 11-point Seawolf lead over the final 10 minutes of the half, forcing overtime. It was in the extra period when the Warriors pulled away for the 78-72 win, giving the Seawolves their first loss of the season. On Saturday, nationally-ranked Chico State held Sonoma State to just five points in the first 15 minutes of the game, crusing to the 52-41 over the Seawolves at Chico. SSU hit just 25.5 percent from the floor in the game as the Seawolves dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play.

Sonoma State Picked to Finish 10th in CCAA Preseason Poll

In a preseason poll of coaches around the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Sonoma State was picked to finish 10th this season. Four-time defending regular season champion UC San Diego was selected to win the CCAA. Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona rounded out the top three. The Seawolves were selected to finish above Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay, respectively.

2009-10 Season in Review

After finishing 11-16 overall and 9-13 in conference play last season, Sonoma State just barely missed an opportunity to play in the CCAA Championship Tournament. It came down to a coin flip between four teams -- Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, and Cal State Dominguez Hills. All tied for seventh with 9-13 records. The four-way tie was broken based on head-to-head play, securing a berth for Cal State San Bernardino and eliminating Cal State Stanislaus. In a two-way tie between Sonoma and Dominguez Hills for the eighth and final spot, all tie-breaking criteria were even, thus prompting a coin flip that was won by the Toros, leaving the Seawolves out of the eightteam tournament. Sonoma State was led by the 8.3 points of senior Stephanie Barnes.

2010-11 Sonoma State Women's Basketball Head Coach Mark Rigby Mark Rigby returns for his 14th season as head coach of the Seawolves in 2010-11. The winningest coach in SSU women’s basketball history, Rigby has led his teams to an impressive 204-155 mark in 13 years at SSU. In conference play, Rigby’s Seawolves have amassed a record of 150-116. Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 13 seasons at the helm, including three 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has accomplished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle. In 1997-98, Rigby led SSU to their first-ever conference championship and what was at the time a school record 20 wins. In addition, the team enjoyed their first trip to the NCAA tournament. He capped off the season by being named NCAC Coach of the Year. Rigby was also honored as CCAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his 2001-02 team to a 21-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tourney.
