After suffering a season-opening loss to Division I Nevada on Nov. 12, the Broncos reeled off six straight victories before a 54-48 setback at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay last Thursday. Cal Poly Pomona is led by this season’s two-time CCAA Player of the Week Reyana Colson, who leads the conference in scoring at 21.4 points per game. Megan Ford and La’Kenya Simon West also score in double-figures for CPP, averaging 13.4 and 13.1 points per game, respectively. Ford also leads the team in rebounds, corralling 8.8 a game. The Broncos are first in the CCAA in scoring margin at +14.0 a game, scoring 72.1 while allowing just 58.1 per contest. 7-1, 3-1 ccaa

The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Undefeated on the road so far this season at 4-0, the Coyotes will look to improve on that mark on a weekend trip to Humboldt State on Thursday, then to Rohnert Park on Saturday. Cal State San Bernardino will play seven of their next nine games on the road. Eisha Sheppard is leading the attack for CSUSB, scoring 14.1 points per game and has dropped in double-figures in seven of the team’s eight games this season. She is fifth in the conference in scoring. Sabrina Gonzalez also averages in double-figures, chipping in with 11.3 a contest. The Coyotes are second in the CCAA in field goal percentage (.426). Cal State San Bernardino is 14-13 all-time against Sonoma State. The two teams split the season series last year, which each team winning on their respective home courts.

In Thursday’s loss at UC San Diego, Sonoma State trailed by just four points with a little more than six minutes remaining in the game, but the Tritons pulled away and closed out the game on a 23-5 run to win 77-55. Hoping to notch a season sweep over Humboldt State on Sunday, Sonoma State launched furious comeback in the final minute gave Sonoma State a chance to pull even when Jaclyn Bisordi popped back for a three-pointer with six seconds remaining, but her shot was stuffed by Humboldt State’s Kayla Williams, securing an eventual 61-56 victory for the visiting Lumberjacks. It was the Seawolves’ six loss in their last seven games.

Conway Right On Target

Junior Aly Conway is quickly becoming a threat down low for the Seawolves this season, and her shooting efficiency is a direct result of that. Her 56.1 percent shooting from the floor is the CCAA’s best mark so far this season, as she’s connecting on 37 of 66 in Sonoma State’s first ten games. Conway is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.0 points per contest. The 6-foot forward from Martinez leads the team in rebounds with 6.9 per game and is third in the conference in offensive rebounds (3.4/game).

Senior Oly Larkin and sophomore Taylor Vigil are regular contributors to the new Seawolves Insider Blog. Check in to get their thoughts on the season as it progresses as they will give an insider look on this year’s Sonoma State women’s basketball team. Go to http://sonomaseawolves.blogspot.com for more information and to read into what else is going on around the department through the eyes of student-athletes on the other 12 intercollegiate sports at Sonoma State University.

Sonoma State Picked to Finish 10th in CCAA Preseason Poll

In a preseason poll of coaches around the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Sonoma State was picked to finish 10th this season. Four-time defending regular season champion UC San Diego was selected to win the CCAA. Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona rounded out the top three. The Seawolves were selected to finish above Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay, respectively.

2009-10 Season in Review

After finishing 11-16 overall and 9-13 in conference play last season, Sonoma State just barely missed an opportunity to play in the CCAA Championship Tournament. It came down to a coin flip between four teams -- Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, and Cal State Dominguez Hills. All tied for seventh with 9-13 records. The four-way tie was broken based on head-to-head play, securing a berth for Cal State San Bernardino and eliminating Cal State Stanislaus. In a two-way tie between Sonoma and Dominguez Hills for the eighth and final spot, all tie-breaking criteria were even, thus prompting a coin flip that was won by the Toros, leaving the Seawolves out of the eightteam tournament. Sonoma State was led by the 8.3 points of senior Stephanie Barnes.

2010-11 Sonoma State Women's Basketball Head Coach Mark Rigby Mark Rigby returns for his 14th season as head coach of the Seawolves in 2010-11. The winningest coach in SSU women’s basketball history, Rigby has led his teams to an impressive 204-155 mark in 13 years at SSU. In conference play, Rigby’s Seawolves have amassed a record of 150-116. Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 13 seasons at the helm, including three 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has accomplished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle. In 1997-98, Rigby led SSU to their first-ever conference championship and what was at the time a school record 20 wins. In addition, the team enjoyed their first trip to the NCAA tournament. He capped off the season by being named NCAC Coach of the Year. Rigby was also honored as CCAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his 2001-02 team to a 21-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tourney.
