vs. San Francisco State GATORS Thursday, January 13 • 5:30 p.m.
1-11, 1-7 ccaa
The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.
After starting the season with three straight losses, the Gators earned their first win of the season, a 46-38 victory over Cal State East Bay on Dec. 3. However, San Francisco State hasn’t won a game since, a streak of eight games, including a pair ten-point losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. last weekend. SFSU has just three players returning from last year’s squad, who reached the CCAA championship tournament for the third straight season. Dominique Hunter leads the Gator attack, averaging a double-double with 10.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. While the Seawolves hold a narrow lead in the all-time series at 33-26, SSU teams coached by 14th-year head coach Mark Rigby is 21-5 against San Francisco State. The two teams spilt the season series in 2009-10.
vs. Cal State Monterey Bay OTTERS Saturday, January 15 • 5:30 p.m.
12-0, 8-0 ccaa
The Wolves’ Den at Rohnert Park, Calif.
As the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) only remaining undefeated team (and one of seven teams in all of Division II), the Otters are currently receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll released Tuesday. Cal State Monterey Bay also leads the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 48.8 points per game. Perhaps the closest game of the season for the Otters was a thrilling 92-91 double-overtime victory at home against UC San Diego. While being the nation’s best defensive team, CSUMB is sixth in the CCAA in scoring offense, averaging 64.9 points a contest. The Otters spread the ball around as no player averages above nine points per game -- Erika Ward scores 8.7 a game. Sonoma State is 10-3 all-time against Cal State Monterey Bay, but the Otters have won the last two.
Sonoma State Set To Host Gators, Otters This Weekend
Looking for its first home win, the Sonoma State women’s basketball team is set to welcome San Francisco State (1-11, 1-7 CCAA) on Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay (12-0, 8-0 CCAA) on Saturday to The Wolves’ Den at Sonoma State University -- two games that will feature two opponents that are practically polar opposites of each other in terms of win-loss records. Tipoff both nights is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start time in Rohnert Park.

Despite heading into the halftime break on Thursday tied with visiting Cal Poly Pomona at 26-26, the Broncos pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Seawolves 44-24 to claim the 70-50 victory. On Saturday, Sonoma State’s valiant comeback attempt in the second half came up just short as the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes pulled away in the final minutes to win 52-45, handing the Seawolves their fourth straight loss and the eighth in their last nine games.
Conway Right On Target
Junior Aly Conway is quickly becoming a threat down low for the Seawolves this season, and her shooting efficiency is a direct result of that. Her 56.3 percent shooting from the floor is the CCAA’s best mark so far this season, as she’s connecting on 40 of 71 in Sonoma State’s first 12 games. Conway is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per contest. The 6-foot forward from Martinez leads the team in rebounds with 6.8 per game and is third in the conference in offensive rebounds (3.4/game).

Sonoma State Picked to Finish 10th in CCAA Preseason Poll
In a preseason poll of coaches around the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Sonoma State was picked to finish 10th this season. Four-time defending regular season champion UC San Diego was selected to win the CCAA. Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona rounded out the top three. The Seawolves were selected to finish above Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay, respectively.
2009-10 Season in Review
After finishing 11-16 overall and 9-13 in conference play last season, Sonoma State just barely missed an opportunity to play in the CCAA Championship Tournament. It came down to a coin flip between four teams -- Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, and Cal State Dominguez Hills. All tied for seventh with 9-13 records. The four-way tie was broken based on head-to-head play, securing a berth for Cal State San Bernardino and eliminating Cal State Stanislaus. In a two-way tie between Sonoma and Dominguez Hills for the eighth and final spot, all tie-breaking criteria were even, thus prompting a coin flip that was won by the Toros, leaving the Seawolves out of the eightteam tournament. Sonoma State was led by the 8.3 points of senior Stephanie Barnes.

2010-11 Sonoma State Women's Basketball Head Coach Mark Rigby Mark Rigby returns for his 14th season as head coach of the Seawolves in 2010-11. The winningest coach in SSU women’s basketball history, Rigby has led his teams to an impressive 204-155 mark in 13 years at SSU. In conference play, Rigby’s Seawolves have amassed a record of 150-116. Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 13 seasons at the helm, including three 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has accomplished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle. In 1997-98, Rigby led SSU to their first-ever conference championship and what was at the time a school record 20 wins. In addition, the team enjoyed their first trip to the NCAA tournament. He capped off the season by being named NCAC Coach of the Year. Rigby was also honored as CCAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his 2001-02 team to a 21-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tourney.
