Cal Poly Pomona, ranked fourth in this week’s NSCAA Division II West Region poll on spot behind SSU, opened up its 2010 campaign with a pair of shutout victories last weekeng against Notre Dame de Namur (3-0) and Dominican (5-0). It marked the first time since 1991 that CPP has opened the season with consecutive shutout wins. The Broncos were led by the two goals by Luis Gonzalez and Anthony Salcedo while four others added a goal as well. CPP was picked by the CCAA coaches to finish fourth in the conference’s South Division this season.

Led by this week’s Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week Obi Agwu, the Coyotes vaulted to No. 10 in the NSCAA Division II National poll after starting the season at No. 25. Agwu, a senior from Alta Loma, scored four goals this past weekend, helping Cal State San Bernardino to a 3-1 win over Saint Martin’s and a 3-0 triumph over Colorado State-Pueblo. An All-CCAA and All-West Region selection last season, he has 25 career goals and 13 assists. The Coyotes were tabbed to finish second in the CCAA South Division in the preseason coaches poll.

Hurst Propels Seawolves To Two Early Season Victories Junior Trevor Hurst has gotten off to a fast start this season, scoring three goals in the first two matches of the season. Two of his goals came on Saturday in the season opener at Fresno Pacific, helping the Seawolves to score four unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the Sunbirds 4-2. Hurst added another score on Tuesday after he launched a free kick around a wall of defenders and into the net -- it was one of three goals scored by Sonoma State that gave the Seawolves a 3-2 win over Dominican. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against nonconference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match in Belmont. The last time the Seawolves lost a non-conference match at home was back on Aug. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle University. Seawolves Look to Defend North Division Title Winners of the North Division for the past six seasons, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team will look to defend its title again in 2010. Armed with seven returning starters, countless other key returners and a talented group of newcomers, the Seawolves are primed and ready for a run at the North Division and the CCAA title in November.

Coaches Pick Sonoma State To Claim CCAA Title After a preseason vote of coaches in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the nationally-ranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team was selected to win the North Division for the seventh consecutive season. The coaches also recognized the Seawolves as the favorites to claim the 2010 CCAA Championship Tournament title that The Seawolves after their annual Blue will be held at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock on Nov. 5-7. and White scrimmage earlier this season. 2010 SONOMA STATE MEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • September 8, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.
