2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

has netted nine scores, as the two combine for 21 of Chico State’s 31 goals this season. Goalkeeper Sam Evans has given up 13 goals in 14 matches this season with three shutouts to his name. Chico State and Sonoma State split the season series this season -- both teams won on their respective home fields. The two teams have never faced each other in postseason play, but the Seawolves are 25-12-2 all-time against the Wildcats. Scouting No. 2 Grand Canyon Antelopes (14-2-2) The Antelopes, who are members of the Pacific West Conference and ranked No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II poll, will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region. Grand Canyon, the champions of the PacWest, sported a 12-1-1 in conference play and 14-2-2 overall while outscoring its opponents 52-9, including a 14-1 outburst in a pair of matches against Chaminade to end their regular season last week. It was their second straight conference title and fourth overall in the five-year history of men’s soccer in the PacWest. The ‘Lopes are led by twotime PacWest Player of the Year Kyle Ciliento, who led the conference in seven statistical categories this season, including goals, in which he scored 25 this season. Ben Paneccasio also repeated as the conference’s Goalkeeper of the Year after he led the PacWest in shutouts (10) and was second in goals-against average (0.70). The Seawolves and Antelopes have never faced each other in the postseason, but have played against each other on 16 occasions. The all-time series record between the two squads is at 7-7-2, but Sonoma State, under head coach Marcus Ziemer, is 7-6-2. In their last meeting, SSU defeated GCU 2-1 on Sept. 4, 2009 at the Seawolf Classic in Rohnert Park.

Scouting No. 3 Seed Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (13-5-1) The Coyotes will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II West Region, despite losing to Sonoma State, 1-0, in the opening round of the CCAA tournament last weekend. Cal State San Bernardino will be making its second consecutive appearance in the national tournament and third as a Division II member. CSUSB earned a berth in the 1991 tournament where it lost to Cal Poly SLO in the first round. Last season, the Coyotes were defeated by Cal State L.A., 5-3, at Los Angeles. Forward Obi Agwu is tied for the conference lead in goals scored with 12, as he has accounted for 37.5 percent of the team’s offense (32 goals). The Coyotes strength is their defense; they have allowed just 12 goals on the season. Goalkeeper Tanner Olinger leads the conference with a 0.52 goals against average and has shutout his opponents nine times this season. Olinger has allowed just eight goals in the 15 matches that he has appeared in. Four of the 12 goals given up by CSUSB this season were to Sonoma State. The Seawolves defeated the Coyotes twice -- 3-1 on Sept. 12 in Rohnert Park and 1-0 in the conference tournament last weekend in Turlock. Cal State San Bernardino has never defeated Sonoma State in their history -- SSU is 16-0-1 against the Coyotes all-time. Sonoma State History in the NCAA Tournament The Seawolves will be making their fourth straight appearance, fifth in the last six years and ninth overall in the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. Sonoma State won the national championship in 2002 and was the runner-up in 1991. SSU is 10-5-3 all-time in the tournament, but has fallen in the first round in each of the past two seasons. (See next page). National Spotlight on Sonoma State After taking a six week hiatus from appearing in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II poll, the Seawolves have reappeared in the Top 25 this week. With six straight victories and a 8-1-1 record in their last ten matches, the Seawolves are ranked as the No. 17 team in the nation. Sonoma State started the preseason ranked 22nd, dropped to 25th in week one, fell out of the poll in week two, reappeared in week three at 23rd, but had stayed out of the national poll until this week. (See table on page six). Varnadore Named Freshman of the Year, Hall Earns CCAA First Team Honors After scoring 10 goals this season and recording four assists, freshman forward Taylor Varnadore was named the CCAA Men’s Soccer Freshman of the Year and also earned All-CCAA Second Team honors. The 17-year-old won two conference player of the week awards in 2010. Defender Ryan Hall was the only Sonoma State student-athlete on the All-CCAA First Team as forward Trevor Hurst, Varnadore and midfielder David Holleran made All-CCAA Second Team and defender Ebby Lombardi earned All-CCAA Honorable Mention honors. Lighting Up The Scoreboard Sonoma State is the CCAA’s highest scoring team with 42 goals this season, tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills. Twenty of the Seawolves’ 42 goals have been scored by just two players -junior Trevor Hurst and freshman Taylor Varnadore have scored 10 goals apiece. Fourteen players have recorded at least one goal and the Seawolves are outscoring their opponents 42-25, including a 25-9 margin in the second half. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out the game-winning assist in Friday’s 1-0 victory over top-seeded Cal State San Bernardino, giving him a conference-leading 12 on the season. He is second on the all-time assists list, surpassing Christopher Ziemer (1990-91, 97-98) with 31 career assists, two short of the all-time record of 33 assists, held by Eric Lafon (2005-08). Varnadore Again Named CCAA Player of the Week - Oct. 24-31 For the second time this season, freshman forward Taylor Varnadore was named the Wilson/ CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for scoring three goals in victories over San Francisco

State and Cal State Monterey Bay. Varnadore scored the equalizer in the second half on Oct. 29 against the Gators, a game in which the Seawolves later won, 2-1. It clinched a berth into the CCAA Championship Tournament. In the regular season finale on Oct. 31, Varnadore struck again -- twice. The true freshman netted two goals in the 3-1 win over the Otters in Seaside. It was the second weekly honor for Varnadore this season. Hurst is Second Seawolf to be named Player of the Week -- Oct. 4-10 After scoring two game-winning goals to knock off North Division leader Chico State and second place Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 8-10, Sonoma State junior forward Trevor Hurst was named the Wilson/CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Hurst, a junior from nearby Santa Rosa and Piner High School, turned in a pair of solid performances that week, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Wildcats on Oct. 8. In the Oct. 10 4-3 shootout victory over the Warriors, Hurst again netted the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. It capped off a sensational Sunday for Hurst, who collected two assists as well. Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005. Ziemer Scores 200th Conference Victory With the 3-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the 2010 regular season finale on Oct. 31, 20-year head coach Marcus Ziemer won his 200th conference match. In his first seven seasons at the helm, Ziemer won an unprecedented 76 matches, compiling a 76-15-7 (.811 winning percentage) in the now-defunct Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC). In the past 13 seasons, Sonoma State has competed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), where he sports a 124-50-14 record with a .672 winning percentage. Ziemer has a 200-65-21 record in conference play (in both the NCAC and CCAA) and a 272-117-40 record overall. He has now won eight conference titles, five in the NCAC and three in the CCAA. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against non-conference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match at Belmont. The last time the Seawolves lost a non-conference match at home was back on Aug. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle University. Sonoma State Athletics on Facebook and Twitter...and blogspot!
