After defeating Hawai’i-Hilo 1-0 to open the 2010 campaign, Cal State East Bay has been shutout in four consecutive contests, including the two conference matches last weekend (a 5-0 loss vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills and a 2-0 loss to top-ranked Cal State L.A.). Jake Bedell is the team’s only scorer with the only assist credited to Alexis Romo. Goalkeeper Patrick Gilbertson leads the conference with 31 saves, who has faced a CCAA-high 108 shots in just five matches. Sonoma State team’s in the Marcus Ziemer era is 12-2-1 against the Pioneers.

One of only two winless teams left in the CCAA, UC San Diego is looking for its first victory of 2010. After a scoreless draw with Dominican to open the season, the Tritons have lost to Notre Dame de Namur (0-2), Cal State L.A. (0-3) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-2) despite outshooting their opponents 62-45. Alec Arsht is the team’s only scorer so far this season. Goalkeeper Jesse Brennan has played all 380 minutes between the posts, making 10 saves. In the Ziemer era, Sonoma State is 10-1-1 against UC San Diego.

Seawolves Upset #10 Coyotes, Earn Weekend Split After a disappointing 5-3 loss on Friday against Cal Poly Pomona that included a record-breaking seven first half goals, the Seawolves bounced back with a convincing 3-1 triumph over then-10th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday. Freshman Taylor Varnadore scored his first four collegiate goals over the weekend, with two coming in each contest. Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes. He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out an assist on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in Friday’s 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers currently has 23 career assists, including four this season. The all-time record of 33 is held by Eric Lafon. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against non-conference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match in Belmont. The last time the Seawolves lost a non-conference match at home was back on Aug. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle University. Seawolves Look to Defend North Division Title Winners of the North Division for the past six seasons, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team will look to defend its title again in 2010. Armed with seven returning starters, countless other key returners and a talented group of newcomers, the Seawolves are primed and ready for a run at the North Division and the CCAA title in November.

The Seawolves after their annual Blue and White scrimmage earlier this season.

Coaches Pick Sonoma State To Claim CCAA Title After a preseason vote of coaches in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the nationallyranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team was selected to win the North Division for the seventh consecutive season. The coaches also recognized the Seawolves as the favorites to claim the 2010 CCAA Championship Tournament title that will be held at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock on Nov. 5-7.

2010 SONOMA STATE MEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • September 14, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.
