Sporting the best record in the CCAA so far this season, the Wildcats are ranked 14th in this week’s NSCAA poll. Chico State had its threematch win streak snapped on Sunday by Cal State L.A. -- a 1-0 heartbreaker in overtime. The Wildcats hit the road this weekend for the first time since Sept. 12, as Chico State has played all but two games at home this season. Friday’s match kicks off a season-long four game road trip. Ferid Celosmanovic is second in the CCAA in goals scored with eight, including two against the Seawolves just two weeks ago in a 2-0 win over SSU.

Holding steady in second place of the CCAA North Division standings, just four points ahead of Sonoma State, the Warriors saw a three-match win streak snapped on Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State Stanislaus hits the road for the first time in six matches, playing in just its third and fourth away games of the season. The Warriors have outscored their opponents 23-10 this season with seven players having at least two goals. The Warriors defeated the Seawolves two weeks ago in Turlock, a 2-1

decision.

Seawolves Split Weekend Series With Otters, Gators They aren’t the team’s leading scorers for nothing. And, on Friday afternoon, they delivered again. Taylor Varnadore and Trevor Hurst each scored a goal, their sixth of the season, to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-0, on Friday afternoon. The Seawolves dominated every aspect of the match while outshooting the Otters, 26-3. On Homecoming Sunday, Sonoma State surrendered the game-winning goal to San Francisco State with six minutes remaining in regulation to drop its third match in the last four tries. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out an assist to Taylor Varnadore’s goal on Friday, giving him a conferenceleading six on the season. It was the fourth time this season that Vickers and Varnadore combined to put the ball into the net. Vickers also assisted on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in the 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers has 25 career assists. The all-time record of 33 assists is held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon. Lighting Up The Scoreboard In just the first six matches of the season, Sonoma State scored 18 goals. However, since then, the Seawolves have scored just three in their last four matches, but SSU is still outscoring its opponents 21-15. Twelve of the Seawolves’ 21 goals have been scored by just two players -- junior Trevor Hurst and freshman Taylor Varnadore, both with six apiece. Friday’s match against CSUMB marked the third time this season that Hurst and Varnadore have scored in the same match. The Last Time... ...the Seawolves lost two consecutive regular season road matches was back on Aug. 24-26, 2006 at Simon Frasier (0-1) and at Seattle University (0-3). The last time the Seawolves lost two consecutive CCAA road matches dates back to Sept. 12-15, 2000 when Sonoma State lost at Chico State (1-2) and at Grand Canyon (0-1).

Taylor Varnadore scored his sixth goal of the season on Friday in a 2-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.

Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005.

2010 SONOMA STATE MEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • October 5, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Head Coach: Marcus Ziemer (Sonoma State, 1988; 20th season) Assistant Coaches: Shawn Percell, Benjamin Ziemer, Tim Maycock, Ben Langwith, Andrew Jones, Neil Turnbull National Spotlight On Sonoma State After splitting last weekend, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team remains out of the national rankings. The Seawolves disappeared from the NSCAA poll last week after being ranked 22nd two weeks ago, 23nd in the preseason poll and 25th in week one. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against non-conference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match in Belmont. The last time the Seawolves lost a non-conference match at home was back on Aug. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle University. Seawolves Look to Defend North Division Title Winners of the North Division for the past six seasons, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team will look to defend its title again in 2010. Armed with seven returning starters, countless other key returners and a talented group of newcomers, the Seawolves are primed and ready for a run at the North Division and the CCAA title in November.
