Among the top teams in the highly-contested south division race (only five points separate the top five teams), the Golden Eagles are just two points behind leader Cal State Dominguez Hills and a point behind eighth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino. Cal State L.A. won its first five matches to open the season, but have dropped four of its last six. If it isn’t the Golden Eagles shutting someone out, their opponents are shutting them out. All eleven CSULA matches have been shutouts this season. Julian Ringhof and Taylor Rivas lead the attack with three goals this season. The Seawolves defeated the Golden Eagles twice last season, once when CSULA was ranked No. 1 in the nation and once to knock CSULA out of the conference tournament last November.

It might be one of the most anticipated matches of the season. Sitting atop the south division standings with 20 points, the Toros will look to extend its winning streak against the Seawolves on Sunday. Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated SSU three times last season -- once in the regular season, once in the conference championship match and the final time a week later in the first round of the NCAA tournament. CSUDH has outscored its opponents 24-12 this season with the help of goalkeeper Markus Dickerson, who is fourth in the CCAA in goals against average (0.86). The Toros, though, lost the two-time NSCAA National Player of the Year in defender Kevin Gallaugher, who helped the team win the national championship in 2008.

Seawolves Earn Two Huge Victories, Take Sole Possession of Second Place Needing two wins to remain strong contenders in the CCAA North Division, the Seawolves did just that last weekend, earning two victories against strong west region competition and the top two teams of the north. Nico Spann gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead against 14th-ranked Chico State on Friday before the Wildcats evened things up at 1-1. Trevor Hurst then began what would be a huge weekend, scoring the eventual game-winner in the second half to help defeat Chico State 2-1. Sunday would be nothing less than spectacular, as two teams -- Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus -- went to war for sole possession of second place in the division. After a back and forth battle that saw the Warriors take an early 2-0 lead, the Seawolves fought back to win the match 4-3 on a score by Hurst in the final 15 minutes. He collected two assists in the victory as well. Hurst is Second Seawolf to be named Player of the Week After scoring two game-winning goals to knock off North Division leader Chico State and second place Cal State Stanislaus last weekend, Sonoma State junior forward Trevor Hurst was named the Wilson/ CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Hurst, a junior from nearby Santa Rosa and Piner High School, turned in a pair of solid performances last weekend, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Wildcats on Friday. In Sunday’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Warriors, Hurst again netted the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. It capped off a sensational Sunday for Hurst, who collected two assists as well. Lighting Up The Scoreboard In just the first six matches of the season, Sonoma State scored 18 goals. After that, the Seawolves cooled off a bit, scoring just three in four matches, but fast forward to last weekend. SSU netted six scores against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus, giving them a conference-leading 27 goals on the season. Fourteen of the Seawolves’ 27 goals have been scored by just two players -- junior Trevor Hurst with eight and freshman Taylor Varnadore with six. Eleven players have recorded at least one goal and the Seawolves are outscoring their opponents 27-19.

Both games of the doubleheader will be nationally televised live via Internet TV on the Toro Sports Trevor Hurst netted two game-winners last weekend and earned himself the CCAA Network. 2010 SONOMA STATE MEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • October 12, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out two assists this past weekend, including one on the gamewinner by Hurst on Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus, giving him a conference-leading eight on the season. Vickers also assisted on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in the 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers has 27 career assists. The all-time record of 33 assists is held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon. The Last Time... ...the Seawolves lost two consecutive regular season road matches was back on Aug. 24-26, 2006 at Simon Frasier (0-1) and at Seattle University (0-3). The last time the Seawolves lost two consecutive CCAA road matches dates back to Sept. 12-15, 2000 when Sonoma State lost at Chico State (1-2) and at Grand Canyon (0-1). Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005.
