humboldt state LUMBERJACKS 3-8-3 overall, 3-7-2 ccaa Friday, Oct. 22 • 3:00 pm HSU Soccer Field at Arcata, Calif.

Sunday, Oct. 24 • 2:00 pm Seawolf Soccer Field at Rohnert Park, Calif.

This weekend features a home-and-home series with travel partner Humboldt State. Both matches will be tabbed as Senior Day for the two squads, as the Lumberjacks will recognize their graduating seniors on Friday at Arcata and the Seawolves will recognize their graduating seniors on Sunday at Rohnert Park. Friday will also mark the opening of the brand new Humboldt State Soccer Field and Facility, which broke ground in the fall of 2008. Humboldt State comes into this weekend with just three wins, including a 1-0 triumph over Cal State L.A. on Sunday. The Lumberjacks have been outscored 20-10 this season. Half of HSU’s goals have come off the foot of Josh Suggs, who is second in the conference in attempted shots with 62. Goalkeeper Kyle Verle has logged the majority of minutes between the posts, making 55 saves and allowing just 17 goals. The Seawolves hold a 20-3-5 record over the Lumberjacks in the Ziemer era and haven’t lost to HSU since 1996 -- a string of 16 matches. The two teams tied both matches last season.

Seawolves Fall To Third in North Division After Tough Weekend Down 1-0 with under a minute to play at Cal State L.A. on Friday, junior Cam Vickers took matters into his own hands and banged a shot off the post and into the net with 17 seconds remaining, knotting the match at one apiece and forcing overtime. Neither the Seawolves of Golden Eagles W-L-T^ could convert in the extra periods, ending the match in a tie and a point for both teams. On Sun10-4-0 day, Cal State Dominguez Hills continued their eight-match unbeaten streak over Sonoma State, 7-4-3 8-5-1 holding the high-powered SSU offense to just six shots and winning 3-0. 7-6-1 3-8-3 1-10-2

W-L-T^ 10-2-2 10-3-1 6-4-4 7-5-1 7-6-1 2-12-2

With Four Matches To Play... ...the Seawolves (19 points -- 6-5-1) sit five points behind North Division leader Chico State (24 points -- 8-4-0) and just one point behind Cal State Stanislaus (20 points -- 6-4-2). The top four teams in the conference will earn a spot to compete in the CCAA Tournament on Nov. 5-7 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The winners of each division will earn an automatic bid into the tournament, leaving two at-large bids for the top two remaining conference teams. Senior Sunday Four student-athletes will be recognized on Sunday for the annual Senior Day game. Juan Sosa, Brandon Dela Cruz, Ryan Hall and David Holleran will be honored in a pre-game ceremony for their efforts on and off the field in their careers at Sonoma State and will be playing in their final collegiate home game. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers has a conference-leading eight assists on the season. Vickers assisted on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in the 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers has 27 career assists. The alltime record of 33 assists is held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon.

Lighting Up The Scoreboard In just the first six matches of the season, Sonoma State scored 18 goals. The Seawolves have cooled off a bit. SSU is second in the conference with 28 goals on the season, one goal behind Cal Cam Vickers scored with 17 seconds left in State Dominguez Hills. Fourteen of the Seawolves’ 28 goals have been scored by just two players regulation on Friday, giving the Seawolves -- junior Trevor Hurst with eight and freshman Taylor Varnadore with six. Eleven players have a huge point with a 1-1 tie at Cal State L.A. recorded at least one goal and the Seawolves are outscoring their opponents 28-23.

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

The Last Time... ...the Seawolves lost two consecutive regular season road matches was back on Aug. 24-26, 2006 at Simon Frasier (0-1) and at Seattle University (0-3). The last time the Seawolves lost two consecutive CCAA road matches dates back to Sept. 12-15, 2000 when Sonoma State lost at Chico State (1-2) and at Grand Canyon (0-1). Hurst is Second Seawolf to be named Player of the Week - Oct. 4-10 After scoring two game-winning goals to knock off North Division leader Chico State and second place Cal State Stanislaus two weekend’s ago, Sonoma State junior forward Trevor Hurst was named the Wilson/CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Hurst, a junior from nearby Santa Rosa and Piner High School, turned in a pair of solid performances, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Wildcats on Oct. 8. In the 4-3 shootout victory over the Warriors on Oct. 10, Hurst again netted the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. It capped off a sensational Sunday for Hurst, who collected two assists as well. Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005.

The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match in Belmont.
