Cal State East Bay finished off an undefeated weekend and brought home the Nanook Classic title this past weekend at Fairbanks, Alaska. Freshman outside hitter Katie Allen had an impressive debut for the Pioneers on opening weekend, totaling 58 kills, including 19 in a 3-1 victory over host Alaska on Saturday. CSUEB finished eighth in the CCAA last season at 8-14 (10-21 overall) and were picked by the coaches in the preseason poll to finish eighth again this season.

Led by the Molten/CCAA Player of the Week Roxanne Brunsting, UC San Diego heads into competition this week at 3-1 after taking part in the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge at Monmouth, Ore. The only loss came at the hands of Western Washington, a 3-1 defeat on Saturday. Brunsting, an All-American last season, had a team-high 49 kills last weekend and three double-doubles. The No. 11 ranked Tritons are picked to finish second in the CCAA standings this season.

Seawolves Fall In Seawolf Spike Finale, Finish Opening Weekend 3-1 It was the battle of the undefeated teams Saturday evening at The Wolves’ Den, but Seattle Pacific pulled a stunning 3-0 upset over No. 21 ranked Sonoma State to close out the two-day Seawolf Spike this past weekend. The Seawolves went into the match with three wins to start the season -- 3-0 victories over Dominican and Grand Canyon and a 3-1 win over BYU-Hawaii. Coaches Pick Sonoma State To Finish Fourth in CCAA The Sonoma State women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2010 after a preseason vote of the head coaches in the 12-team conference. The Seawolves finished fourth in the CCAA standings a year ago with a 15-7 record. National Spotlight on Sonoma State For the first time in school history, the Sonoma State volleyball team began the season ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll, debuting at No. 21. However, the Seawolves have since dropped out of the Top 25 after going 3-1 last weekend, but are still receiving votes. SSU spent all but one week ranked in the Top 25 last season and got as high as No. 13 -- the highest ranking in school history. All-American Watch Juniors Keala Peterson and Taylor Krenwinkel topped off a fantastic 2009 season by being named to the All-American team, only the second and third volleyball studentathlete to do so in program history. Peterson had an outstanding 2010 debut this weekend, recording a team-high 45 kills, including a 20-kill effort in a 3-1 win over BYUHawaii. Krenwinkel was the CCAA’s best defender last season and begins this season with 73 digs, 30 of which came against BYU-Hawaii. Krenwinkel was also named to the Seawolf Spike All-Tournament team.

Head Coach Bear Grassl Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

2010 Sonoma State Volleyball Roster

# Name 1 Hayley Ross 2 Kelsey Dall 3 Sammi Bentovoja 4 Taylor Krenwinkel 5 Kaitlyn Dunaway 6 Amanda Vanover 7 Nicole Gragnola 8 Keala Peterson The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in 9 Annelise Dohrer program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their 10 Lindsay Lytle highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group 11 Devynne Johnson of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA 12 Alex DaRosa Tournament for the second consecutive year, where 13 Ally Sather they were upset by Cal State L.A.. 14 Brooke Moore 15 Kendahl Batiste The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season 17 Kelsey Hull went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished 20 Devin Shaver 21 Briana Hammonds tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 23 Ashley Robinson on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a firstround loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.
