Losers of their last four matches, Cal Poly Pomona comes into Thursday’s match winning just two sets during that span (2-12). However, the Broncos record more kills per set than their opponents (12.5 to 11.5). Leading the way is Lindsay Poulos, who ranks fifth in the CCAA in hitting percentage (.344). Freshman setter Katie Colin is fourth in the conference’s assist category with 9.94 per set and Taylr Kreutziger is third in blocks with 1.03 per set. SSU swept the season series between the two squads last season, but is 13-20 all-time against the Broncos.

Ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation already this season, last year’s national runner-up Cal State San Bernardino comes into Rohnert Park ranked at No. 5 in this week’s AVCA poll. The Coyotes’ only loss came at the hands of Alaska Anchorage at the Phoenix Inn GNAC-CCAA Challenge in Oregon -- a 3-0 sweep. It was the first time CSUSB had been swept since a 3-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 29, 2008. Jane Chafeh (4.36 k/s) and Samantha Middleborn (.598 hitting %) leads the prolific attack for the Coyotes. SSU has lost 25 straight matches to CSUSB, dating back to 1997.

Seawolves Even Conference Record With Weekend Wins at Stanislaus, Chico Down two sets to none on Friday, Cal State Stanislaus made a furious comeback and tied the match at two sets apiece, but Sonoma State regained composure and outlasted the Warriors, grabbing a 3-2 victory on Friday night -- the first five-set match of the season for the Seawolves. On Saturday at Chico State, Keala Peterson and Ally Sather combined for 20 of Sonoma State’s 41 kills and the team hit at a .283 clip, as the Seawolves handed Chico State its first three-set defeat of the season. It was the first time since 2003 that Sonoma State swept Chico State at Chico. Home Sweet Home The Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 28-5 record at home. Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 21-118 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. With No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino visiting Rohnert Park on Saturday, Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-29). Tough Losses The three losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego -- the three teams that SSU has lost to so far this season -- is 23-6. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is third in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.93. She has 138 this season, including 31 this past weekend, moving her into third on the all-time list for digs in a career with exactly 1,200. She needs 505 to top former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton for the school record (1,704).

2010 SONOMA STATE VOLLEYBALL Weekly Release • September 20, 2010

Head Coach Bear Grassl Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

2010 Sonoma State Volleyball Roster

# Name 1 Hayley Ross 2 Kelsey Dall 3 Sammi Bentovoja 4 Taylor Krenwinkel 5 Kaitlyn Dunaway 6 Amanda Vanover 7 Nicole Gragnola 8 Keala Peterson The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in 9 Annelise Dohrer program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their 10 Lindsay Lytle highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group 11 Devynne Johnson of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA 12 Alex DaRosa Tournament for the second consecutive year, where 13 Ally Sather they were upset by Cal State L.A.. 14 Brooke Moore 15 Kendahl Batiste The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season 17 Kelsey Hull went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished 20 Devin Shaver 21 Briana Hammonds tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 23 Ashley Robinson on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a firstround loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

The Last Time... ...the Seawolves opened up conference play with back-to-back losses was back on Sept. 7-8, 2007 at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. National Spotlight on Sonoma State For the first time in school history, the Sonoma State volleyball team began the season ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll, debuting at No. 21. However, the Seawolves have since dropped out of the Top 25 after a slow start to the 2010 season. SSU spent all but one week ranked in the Top 25 last season and got as high as No. 13 -- the highest ranking in school history. Follow The Action, LIVE! Can’t make it to The Wolves’ Den to catch the match? The Seawolf Sports Network is making its return to the internet again this season.
