Dig For A Cure Night! Throughout the month of October, each CCAA volleyball team will designate a special “Dig for a Cure” match to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each team will wear pink warm-up shirts and the match will be played with pink volleyballs to honor those who are battling, or who have battled, breast cancer. Join us on Saturday, Oct. 2 when the Seawolves host Cal State Monterey Bay to honor the people and their families who battle breast cancer! Sonoma State, the CCAA and Molten USA are proud to partner during the month of October, “Breast Cancer Awareness” month, to highlight the fight against breast cancer. Home Sweet Home The Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 29-6 record at home. Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 21-119 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. With No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino defeating the Seawolves on Saturday, Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-30).

Head Coach: Edward “Bear” Grassl (Sonoma State, 1991; ninth year) Assistant Coaches: Jesse Ortiz, Michaela Ebben

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad.

Tough Losses The four losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino -- three of the four teams that SSU has lost to so far this season -- is 30-4. UC San Diego, who was ranked 11th at the time, has fallen to 5-6.

In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons.

Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is fifth in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.47. She has 161 this season as she sits at third on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,223. She needs 482 to top former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton for the school record (1,704).

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

National Spotlight on Sonoma State For the first time in school history, the Sonoma State volleyball team began the season ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II poll, debuting at No. 21. However, the Seawolves have since dropped out of the Top 25 after a slow start to the 2010 season. SSU spent all but one week ranked in the Top 25 last season and got as high as No. 13 -- the highest ranking in school history.
