Starting the season ranked as the No. 8 team in the AVCA poll, the Tritons have since dropped out of the top 25 and sit in eighth place in the CCAA standings. After defeating Sonoma State, 3-0, back on Sept. 11, UC San Diego lost five straight matches, but have now won three of their last four. Katie Condon is one of three Tritons to play in all 15 of the team’s matches this season, hammering 164 kills in 58 sets. Thalia McCann sets the offense and is fourth in the CCAA in assists per set (9.57) and Janessa Werhane is also fourth in the conference in digs (4.82). The Tritons led the all-time series, 18-4.

Having one of their best seasons in history so far, the Pioneers are coming off a huge upset victory over then-4th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday in a five-set thriller -- it was the Coyotes first conference loss of the season. Ranked No. 23 in this week’s AVCA poll, Cal State East Bay is led by the 187 kills of Katie Allen and the conference’s fourth-most proficient hitter in Brianna Bryant (.329 hitting %). Lauren Massa is the CCAA’s leading defender, recording 5.21 digs per set this season. The Pioneers defeated the Seawolves earlier this season, 3-1, for just the fourth time in 20 matches.

Seawolves See Four-Match Win Streak Snapped at L.A. After a 3-0 loss to volleyball powerhouse Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 25, the Seawolves bounced back to win four straight matches, all by virtue of a three-set sweep, including a 3-0 win on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The streak ended, however, as Cal State L.A. held off a pesky Sonoma State team to claim a hard-fought victory in four sets. 11 Down, 11 To Go... With a 7-4 record in conference play this season, the Seawolves have hit the midway point of the 2010 CCAA campaign. After dropping the first two conference matches, Sonoma State has won seven of their last nine, including a convincing 3-0 victory over then-21st-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct 2. Sonoma State is 16-5 in the second half of the CCAA season during the past two seasons, including an 8-3 mark last year. Bring Out The Brooms The Seawolves won a school-record twelve consecutive sets in CCAA play, en route to four straight three-set victories between Sept. 29 and Oct. 8 of this season. Prior to membership in the CCAA, Sonoma State won 16 straight sets back in 1993-94 when the Cossacks (as they were known as until 2002) were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC). Home Sweet Home The Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 32-6 record at home, including a 7-2 record this season. Tough Losses The five losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll at some point this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino -- three of the five teams that SSU has lost to this season -- is 41-7. UC San Diego, who was ranked 11th at the time and since fallen out, is at 8-7 and Cal State L.A., who was ranked all the way up until last week, is 9-6.

2010 SONOMA STATE VOLLEYBALL Weekly Release • October 11, 2010

Head Coach Bear Grassl Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

# Name 1 Hayley Ross 2 Kelsey Dall 3 Sammi Bentovoja 4 Taylor Krenwinkel 5 Kaitlyn Dunaway 6 Amanda Vanover 7 Nicole Gragnola 8 Keala Peterson The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in 9 Annelise Dohrer program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their 10 Lindsay Lytle highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group 11 Devynne Johnson of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA 13 Ally Sather Tournament for the second consecutive year, where 14 Brooke Moore they were upset by Cal State L.A.. 15 Kendahl Batiste 17 Kelsey Hull The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season 18 Alex DaRosa went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished 20 Devin Shaver 21 Briana Hammonds tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 23 Ashley Robinson on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a firstround loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. However, the Seawolves upset then-21st-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay in three straight sets on Oct. 2, the first win over a ranked team since SSU did so last season against then-25th-ranked Chico State (Nov. 6). Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 22-119 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-30). The Seawolves were 2-4 against ranked teams in 2009 and are 1-2 this season. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is fifth in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.73. She has 246 this season as she sits at third on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,308. She needs 397 to top former SSU student-athlete Taylor Manton for the school record (1,704). Follow The Action, LIVE! Can’t make it to The Wolves’ Den to catch the match? The Seawolf Sports Network is making its return to the internet again this season.
