Following a 23-9 record last season (14-8 in conference play), the Wildcats suffered several key injuries this season and have fell to 10th in the standings. Chico State opened up the 2010 campaign at 7-2, but have lost eight of its last 11 matches. The Wildcats snapped a season-long six match losing streak with a pair of 3-1 victories last weekend against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. Jessica Leek, Alex Shurtz and Makenzie Fahnestock have combined for 630 of the team’s 957 kills and setter Sable Vissaescusa is third in the CCAA with 9.79 assists per game. SSU is 25-16 all-time against Chico, including a 3-0 win earlier this season.

After a season-long five-match winning streak that put them at 9-4, their best start in school history, the Warriors have since lost five of their last six, including a five-set heartbreaker to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Three of those losses have come against teams that are ranked, or have been ranked, in the AVCA poll this season. Cal State Stanislaus is third in the CCAA in blocks, with 2.05 per set. Leading the way are Kaycee Gow and Melissa Bishop, the conference’s fourth- and fifth-best blockers. Lianne Vicchio is seventh in the CCAA with 3.32 kills per set. SSU defeated the Warriors in five-sets on Sept. 11 and lead the all-time series, 33-8.

Seawolves Lose Pair of Five-Set Thrillers Despite losing the first two sets on Friday night against UC San Diego, the Seawolves fought back and won the next two, forcing the deciding fifth set. However, the Tritons regained their momentum and cruised to the set (15-8) and match (3-2) victory. A night later, the match went back and forth, but Sonoma State took a 2-1 match lead into the fourth frame. Cal State East Bay, ranked 23rd in the nation, came right back to win the next two sets, convincingly, en route to a 3-2 win -- the Seawolves’ second straight five-set loss. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is second in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.95. Recording 61 digs this past weekend, she has 307 this season as she sits at third on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,369.

Tough Losses The seven losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll at some point this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino -- three of the five teams that SSU has lost to this season and are currently ranked -- is 47-5. UC San Diego and Cal State L.A., who have been ranked this season, are both 10-7.

Head Coach: Edward “Bear” Grassl (Sonoma State, 1991; ninth year) Assistant Coaches: Jesse Ortiz, Michaela Ebben

Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad.

Bring Out The Brooms The Seawolves won a school-record twelve consecutive sets in CCAA play, en route to four straight three-set victories between Sept. 29 and Oct. 8 of this season. Prior to membership in the CCAA, Sonoma State won 16 straight sets back in 1993-94 when the Cossacks (as they were known as until 2002) were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC).

In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons.

Home Sweet Home The Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 32-8 record at home, including a 7-4 record this season.

A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 22-120 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-30). The Seawolves were 2-4 against ranked teams in 2009 and are 1-3 this season.
