Ranked eighth in this week’s AVCA Division II poll and first in last week’s first official NCAA DIvision II West Region poll, the Coyotes have only lost one conference game, a five-set loss at the hands of Cal State East Bay on Oct. 9. Earlier this season, Cal State San Bernardino won a school-record 29 consecutive sets. Last year’s national runner-up is led by the 4.05 kills per set of Jane Chafeh, 10.29 assists per set of Camille Smith and the 1.26 blocks per set of Samantha Middleborn. The Seawolves are 5-26 all-time against the Coyotes and Cal State San Bernardino has won 26 straight matches against Sonoma State, dating back to 1997.
Winners in three of their last four matches, the Broncos are ninth in the CCAA standings with a 7-8 record. Cal Poly Pomona is coming off a 3-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, and like Sonoma State, have played five sets in three of their last four matches. The Broncos are led by the 209 kills of Kristin McNeese and the hitting efficiency of Lindsey Poulos (.320), which is fourth in the conference. The Broncos and Seawolves battled into the fifth set on Sept. 23 in Rohnert Park, but SSU pulled out the nailbiting victory. Sonoma State is 14-20 all-time against Cal Poly Pomona, but SSU has won four straight.
Seawolves Beat Chico in Five, Sweep Stanislaus On Friday against Chico State, Sonoma State faced match point in the fifth set, down 14-12. But the Seawolves rallied for three straight points and eventually outscored the Wildcats 5-1 to steal the come-from-behind victory in five sets. On Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus, Keala Peterson hit a season-high .448 with 16 kills in 29 attacks and Ally Sather chipped in with 11 kills to lead Sonoma State to a three-set sweep. Ally Sather Named Molten/CCAA Volleyball Player of the Week Leading Sonoma State to two key victories over the weekend, including an exciting come-frombehind win over Chico State on Friday, Ally Sather was named the Molten/CCAA Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 18-24. She smashed a team-high 30 kills with a .268 hitting percentage, rejected a total of five attacks, four of which were solo, four digs, two service aces and two assists. Leading the team in kills this season, Sather has 683 career kills, including a teamhigh 241 this season. She is tied for fourth in the CCAA in kills per set with 3.44. The last to earn the award was former student-athlete and current assistant coach Lindsay Brown, who earned the honor on Sept. 14, 2009. Regionally Ranked at No. 4 The Seawolves have been ranked No. 4 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region poll released last week. Sonoma State is the second highest CCAA team in the regional poll as Cal State San Bernardino sits atop the rankings. Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) foes Seattle Pacific and Western Washington are second and third in the poll, respectively. Cal State Monterey Bay, San Francisco State and UC San Diego are below Sonoma State at fifth, sixth and seventh, while Alaska Anchorage and Hawaii Pacific are eighth and ninth. Cal State L.A. is tenth. The top eight teams in the final regional poll that will be released after the final week of the season will qualify for the NCAA tournament. Krenwinkel’s Diggin’ It Junior Taylor Krenwinkel is second in the CCAA in digs per set with 4.84. She has 339 this season as she sits at third on the all-time list for digs in a career with 1,401. Head Coach Bear Grassl Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his ninth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2010. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to two of the best seasons in school history in ‘08 and ‘09, putting forward a 46-15 record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Led by a core group 11 Devynne Johnson of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA 13 Ally Sather Tournament for the second consecutive year, where 14 Brooke Moore they were upset by Cal State L.A.. 15 Kendahl Batiste 17 Kelsey Hull The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season 18 Alex DaRosa went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished 20 Devin Shaver 21 Briana Hammonds tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 23 Ashley Robinson on the hardwood of the Seawolf Gym. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993 but a firstround loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention.
Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (1514) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In eight seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached three All-Americans and countless All-Conference All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

Seawolves Against Nationally Ranked Opponents Sonoma State hasn’t had much success against nationally ranked opponents in their history. Since volleyball records began to be kept in 1991, the Seawolves (known as the Cossacks upuntil the 2002 season) are 22-120 against teams ranked in the Top 25 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. Sonoma State has never beaten a Top Five team in its history (0-30). The Seawolves were 2-4 against ranked teams in 2009 and are 1-3 this season. Tough Losses The seven losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been at the hands of teams that have appeared in the national poll at some point this season. The combined record of Seattle Pacific, Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Bernardino -- three of the five teams that SSU has lost to this season and are currently ranked -- is 54-7. UC San Diego and Cal State L.A., who have been ranked this season, are 12-7 and 11-8, respectively. Home Sweet Home The Seawolves enjoyed the friendly confines of The Wolves’ Den on their home floor in recent years. During the last three seasons, Sonoma State owns a 34-8 record at home, including a 9-4 record this season.
