Sitting atop the North Division standings, just one point ahead of Cal State Stanislaus, the Gators were ranked fifth in last week’s NCAA Division II West Region poll. San Francisco State is ranked eighth in the nation in shutout percentage and 10th in saves percentage, thanks to the work of Annicia Jones. She leads the CCAA in those categories as she has only given up 10 goals this season. Myriah Johnson leads the offensive attack for the Gators with six of the team’s 22 goals. SFSU defeated SSU 1-0 back on Oct. 3 in Rohnert Park.

With just one win in conference play this season, the Otters have lost their last seven matches. Cal State Monterey Bay’s last win came against Cal State East Bay on Sept 26, a 2-1 victory. The Otters have been outscored 43-11 this season. Three of the 11 goals have come from Marlina Massagli and two from Natalie Argueta. When the Seawolves and Otters played each other on Oct. 1, SSU defeated CSUMB 3-0. The Otters have never defeated Sonoma State in 13 tries, dating back to 2004.

Freshman McFarlin Scores Victory for Seawolves on Senior Day Freshman JJ McFarlin scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in regulation, giving Sonoma State the 1-0 Senior Day victory over Humboldt State on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. Junior Allie Maduell beat the Lumberjack defender to the endline and crossed the ball to McFarlin, who punched it into the net for her first collegiate goal, setting off a frenzied celebration.

Sophomore Alexis Sciacqua has been making a statement for the Seawolves recently, starting four of the last five matches and appearing in the last seven between the posts. Sciacqua, who made a career-high 12 saves on Oct. 17 at Cal State Dominguez Hills and another nine on Oct. 15 at Cal State L.A., has moved into second place in the CCAA in save percentage (.861) and fourth in goals against average (0.87). Named as the starting goalkeeper midway through last season, Sciacqua didn’t allow a goal by an opponent for the first 391 minutes of her collegiate career. She has given up just 17 goals in 1585 minutes, 58 seconds in her career as a goalkeeper at Sonoma State.

Seawolves Snap Scoreless Streak, Beat Otters On Oct. 1 against Cal State Monterey Bay, Sara Studer scored two goals and Allison Kern put the match out of question with a score late in the game, ending a six-match scoreless streak for Sonoma State en route to a 3-0 victory. Studer put the Seawolves on the board early with a header past the Otter goalkeeper, just seven and a half minutes into the match. The score remained 1-0 until Studer added her second goal of the day in the 72nd minute and just over two minutes later, Kern gave the Seawolves a comfortable 3-0 lead. It ended a streak of 587 minutes and 58 seconds that Sonoma State was held scoreless. The Seawolves remain unbeaten by the Otters, improving to 10-0-3 over CSUMB. Seawolves Earn Point Off Tritons, First In History Going into the Sept. 19th match against then-25th-ranked UC San Diego, the Sonoma State women’s Freshman J.J. McFarlin gets dogpiled after soccer team had never earned a point against the Tritons in its history. Battling through a scoreless scoring the game winning goal with 11 seconds match that included two overtimes, the Seawolves forced a tie, earning their first point in 15 matches left in the regulation to beat Humboldt State against UCSD. Sonoma State is now 0-14-1 against UC San Diego. 1-0 on Sunday.

2010 SONOMA STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • October 26, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Women’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Luke Oberkirch Luke Oberkirch begins his 16th season as head coach of the women’s soccer team at Sonoma State University. Since 1995, when he took over as head coach, Luke Oberkirch has complied a 185-88-29 overall record and a 123-54-25 mark in conference play. In his 15 complete seasons, Oberkirch has guided his team to seven first place finishes, including five in the CCAA’s North Division and two in the Northern California Athletic Conference. The 2009 season was one of frustration and missed opportunities for a talented Sonoma State squad. Stricken by numerous injuries, especially on the attack, the Seawolves stumbed to an 8-9-3 overall record, though they did still finish in a second place tie in the CCAA North. Eight of their nine losses came by a single goal. Despite it all, defender Lindsay Catton was named an All-American for the second straight year, becoming the first SSU player to accomplish the back-to-back feat since 1998. Coach Oberkirch joined the Sonoma State staff in 1990, the year the women’s soccer team brought home the school’s first-ever NCAA National Championship. As SSU’s top assistant coach from 1990-94 under Peter Reynaud, Oberkirch was an important part of the team’s incredible success. The teams won five consecutive NCAC titles and made the NCAA playoffs five years in a row. In 1995, Oberkirch was named the third head coach in the program’s history. Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Oberkirch was head coach of the boys soccer team at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from 1987-89. In 1988, his team won the North Bay League Championship and in each of his three seasons, his team made the CIF North Coach Section playoffs. A San Diego State graduate, Oberkirch received his B.A. in Physical Education in 1987 and earned his teaching credential from Sonoma State in 1989. Luke and his wife Michele reside in Cloverdale with their son Jayk.

Sonoma State Athletics on Facebook and Twitter Do you have Facebook or Twitter? Follow the Seawolves on both social networking sites by searching for the official Facebook site @Sonoma State Seawolves and the official Twitter page @sonomaseawolves. The athletic department has also launched a new blog with new posts from women’s soccer student-athlete Katie Parucha. Be sure to check it out! 2009 Year in Review Coming off a 15-win season in 2008 and a first place finish in the CCAA North Division, the Seawolves got off to a great start in 2009 with two straight convincing wins to start the year – two non-conference victories against Hawaii-Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur. Then, a weekend trip to Washington State slowed the Seawolves’ momentum with two one-goal losses against Saint Martin’s and Western Washington before conference play started a week later. Sonoma State would go on to win its first CCAA matches, but then played extra time in four of its next five matches, which could account for the injuries suffered early on. With 10 conference matches to play, the Seawolves found themselves at 2-2-2, including four double overtime nail-biters, causing some physical and emotional fatigue. The rest of the schedule showed some up and down moments, but the Seawolves ended on a high note, winning two of their last three matches. They found themselves in unchartered territory, though, as Sonoma State fell under the .500 mark for the first time since 1986 with an 8-9-3 record.
