ACADEMIC WORK
URBAN THRESHOLDS GRADUATING THESIS PROJECT
The development of the La Victoria community in Santiago de Chile is explored through the concept of urban thresholds. Considerations include the tectonic divide between adjacent neighbourhoods, the transition between public and private space, the conflict between autoconstruction and controlled development, and the negotiation between appropriated and designed space. A flexible social housing project, intended to be built within a framework of development over time, addresses the transition between each of these conditions.
SKVR CENTRAL MASTERS YEAR 1
A multi-purpose facility for the SKVR community arts organization in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The project’s formal response is driven by the surrounding context buildings; an extension of these rectilinear forms creates an open central space, enclosed as an atrium by the mass of the building. Art and dancing studios, gallery spaces, an auditorium and a cafe are organized around this multi-level open circulatory space, through which the activities within the building are displayed alongside artwork produced in the facility. Two-way concrete coffers used as a structural system create a tectonic rhythm against the acute angles of the building mass, and filter light entering the studios and galleries.
SPIRITUAL SPACE BACHELOR GRADUATION PROJECT
The project intent was to create an interfaith spiritual space for use by any group or community in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The tectonic response evokes an idea of transcendence and spirituality through thoughtful composition of building form, material selection, and use of light. The majority of the program, including a meeting hall, outdoor pond/skating rink, and community library, is located underground. Three towers: one empty, one circulatory and one filled with individual rooms for meditation, rise from the earth.
