HYBRID SKYSCRAPER in CHICAGO IL, USA Graduate studio project in Fall 2013, Professor Paul Armstrong Team project : Sooho Park, Chang Gu Location : Chicago Dowtown, IL USA Program : office, residential, hybrid program (office+residence), book cafe, food court
Chicago’s skyline is among the world’s tallest and most dense. Tall buildings are often important landmarks of the city and, when designed appropriately, contribute to urban quality and livability. “Hybrid Skyscraper” is a mixed-use super-tall building intended to make itself a new landmark of the area as well as make positive contribution to Chicago’s Loop. The site is located in Chicago’s Streeterville District, Chicago, bounded by E. North Water Street, N Columbus Drive and the Chicago River. This area has some of the tallest building of Chicago, many upscale

stores, hotels and restaurant, and one of the most popular tourist attraction, Navy Pier. “Hybrid Skyscraper” is a sculptural presence in the skyline. Unlike traditional buildings using vertical supports, the structure of this one consists of a central core with columns at lower levels, mega bracing members connected in triangular shape, and secondary diagonal bracing structure to bear both lateral and gravity load. The mega structure will allow the building being sculpted with many faces responding to the city, nature and the people. As a result, the building will be a unique existence reflecting the area.

PEOPLE AND BUILDING
RESIDENTIAL
The major function inside the structure are residential, office and hybrid live-work space. With mass adoption of smart phones and advanced network technologies, people are able to work at home and connect to their office like never before. Between 2005 and 2011, the number of workers telecommuting in the U.S. grew by 73 percent. Providing option of work from home increases employee satisfaction, and reduces absenteeism and time for commute but there are also concerns about work at home, such as productivity and creativity. Thus, how to live and work together and how to get the balance between live and work is very important. “Hybrid Skyscraper” is a “flexible work and live model” helping Chicago-area business to adapt to the new lifestyle. The two new hybrid program this building has are SOHO and LOFT. SOHO unit is more close to one bedroom apartment besides it has clearly defined work area. It is more appropriate for people who has start-up companies and who work full-time at home. LOFT is more close to 20-people-sized office but having living space inside. For normal residential units, the building will facilitate with a daycare center for the family; for normal office, the building will facilitate with telecommuting technology and removable floor plate to allow work space expandable.

The Center of Architecture is to provide a transparent space for the public to visit, explore, and learn about current and historic architecture precedents. The building provides space for exhibitions as well as studios for students to work. The center also houses a small hotel, pool, spa, retail and coffee shops on the first and second stories. The lobby of the building opens to a book store and fast food restaurant below that accommodate the Omotesando station subway. The fourth floor is a place for the public to gather for lectures, seminars, and

the sharing of knowledge and culture. An initial idea of weaving light sight and program relating to the fashion district has led us to route earthquake resistant structural columns through the floors. The columns also serve as main program space and vertical circulation. Our intention is to make a delicate free owing plan that communicates with an active street corner. The buildings transparency reveals itself to the public and welcomes them to participate.

Weaving is a method of fabric production in which two distinct sets of yarns are interlaced at certain angles to form a fabric or cloth. Tokyo is one of the significantly busy and dense city among the world. Tokyo has been tightly interlaced with huge number of factors such as history, culture, topography and human relationship. They are interacting each other and forming Tokyo as Tokyo seems like. Omotesando is famous for fashion which uses fabric as its main resource.

Design Process Threading The 2m wide and 2.4m height tube flies around the building creating interesting waved indoor space. The tube is for temporary exhibition of Japanese architecture.

All gravity load act to the building spread to each diagrid column by its tributary area. The 5 diagrid columns consist various programs that contain its own loads, which are transferred through the sandwich floor system to the diagrid structure. The illustration above shows thin and light steel members (working as beam) supporting loads form floor and transferring to the column, and finally released to the ground.

Diagrid structural system can carry gravity loads as well as lateral forces owing to their triangulated The diagonal members in diagrid structural systems can carry gravity loads as well as lateral forces owing to their triangulated configuration, whereas the diagonals in conventional braced frame carry only lateral loads. 36
Bamboo is well known for stiffness against wind load. The reason why bamboo may rises high without breaking is that it has joint every certain distance, and our structure has similar structure with bamboo. According to paper titled “Diagrid structural systems for tall buildings� , column angle between 53 degree and 76 degree is optimum angles for both gravity and lateral loads. Our building has various angles due to the irregular shape, but mostly designed from 60 degree to 75 degree , which means quite reasonable choice.

Bio skin Porous ceramic pipes are made with soil. The rainwater collected from the surface of the rooftop and stored in the underground storage tank is pumped up and circulated throughout the pipes. The rainwater penetrates the porous ceramic and the evaporates from pipe surface, thereby cooling the surrounding air. This system actually work as decreasing temperature by 5 degree Rain F in the summer.

Generally most of buildings have refrigerant machine called chiller which generates significant amount of heat everyday and through away that heat to the air through cooling tower. We propose to reuse the wasted heat for radiant floor heating system, which will save a lot of energy. Chiller generates chilled water as well as hot water, and the hot water are going to every floor for radiant floor heating, not going to cooling tower. to Even though, in winter, there might be less wasted heat, because people may not use air-conditioner, there should be certain amount heat generated from refrigerator in kitchen at third floor. 37

At the most westerly point of the Australian continent, Shark Bay, with its islands and the land surrounding it, has three exceptional natural features: its vast sea-grass beds, which are the largest (4,800 km) and richest in the world; its duong (sea cow) population; and its stromatolites. Shark Bay is also home to five species of endangered mammals.
This park, formerly called Uluru (Ayers Rock—Mount Olga) National Park, features spectacular geological formations that dominate the vast red sandy plain of central Australia. Uluru, an immense monolith, and Kata Tjuta, the rock domes located west of Uluru, form part of the traditional belief system of the oldest human societies in the world.
The 239,723 ha Purnululu National Park is located in the State of Western Australia. These outstanding examples of cone karst owe their existence and uniqueness to several interacting geological, biological, erosional and climatic phenomena.

The basement rock in the area is Late Cretaceous limestone and chalk. The most extensive younger rocks are Peron sandstones and limestones. Gypsim has been formed as a result of evaporation of saline groundwaters within the sediments of broad tidal flats adjacent to areas such as Hamelin Pool. Tides wary with a spring range of 1.7m and a neap range of 0.6m.
Uluru major Amadeus sedimentary basin, the park comprises extensive sand plains, dunes and alluvial desert, punctuated by the Uluru monolith Kata Tjuta, some 32 km to the west. Altitude Uluru : 340 meters above the desert 862m above sea level Summit of Mount Olga at Kata Tjuta 546m above the desert 1,069m above sea level.
Purnululu National Park comprises four major ecosystems: the Bungle Bungle Mountain Range, wide sand plains surrounding the Bungle Bungles; the Ord River valley to the east and south of the Park; and limestone ridges.

COMMUNICATION WITH SEA ANIMALS
Australia is well known for extremely various kind of animals and plants. The site, Shark bay, also has many rear and valuable sea animals such as dugongs called sea cow, whale sharks, and sea lions. Travelers will have a great chance to commune with these sea animals via snorkeling or swimming. The inn of this site offers guests 3 different views to the sea. First, since living room and dining room is lower than sea level, people can view marine animals and plants right at the living room or dining room having meal with family. Second, each unit has its own infinite pool which has same level with sea. Lastly, above water view is provided at the bedroom on the second floor so that travelers can enjoy beautiful sunrise and sunset above the ocean. Tidal energy is considered for sustainability.

Uluru monolith has significant meaning to aborigines in Australia. Religious rituals are still often held today in the cave around the base of monolith. There are 2 reasons to place building underground. Firstly, aboriginal ancestors lived in the cave at Uluru monolith, so that guest can experience similar environment of their living. Secondly, the site is located in the desert area, which has large temperature differences between day and night. More consistent temperature at the underground will offer guest comfort temperature zone without excessive heating or cooling. Although it is underground house, natural ventilation and light is available thanks to the depressed path between A’ buildings. Becoming aborigine will be interesting experience through wearing their cloth, eating their food, and using their tool.

PURNULULU NATIONAL PARK WALKING IN THE SKY
The inn of this site is located in Bungle Bungle range which is the landform of Purnululu national park. The building is placed right between the steep rocks, connecting them physically. Since it requires long span like bridge, steel structure is selected with Vierendeel truss that has no diagonal members to maximize spatial efficiency and unobstructed great view. As floor material of bedroom is structural glass, guests might feel as they are walking in the sky. For those who may feel uncomfortable with glass floor, room size carpet will be provided. Wind energy is considered for the sustainability, so three wind turbines are suspended at the bottom of lower slab.

Concept The ability to flex the fingers consists of a flexor muscles in the forearm and their tendons are inserted into the bones of the fingers. The bones on human’s fingers works as compression members such as steel or concrete, and tendons will be tension members like cables. When brain commends arm muscle to pull tendon (cable) to move forefinger, the muscle pulls tendon (cable) and then forefinger bone (steel) move toward the direction the tendon pulls. The site is well known for the Battle of Hansando between Korean navy and Japanese navy in the Joseon Dynasty. Sun Sin Lee was a Korean naval commander, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war, and is well-respected for his exemplary conduct on and off the battlefield not only by Koreans, but by Japanese Admirals as well. The Korean navy controlled by commander Sun sin Lee was settled at this site as military camp. However, Gangu harbor, the site of this project, has recently lost an old Tongyoung’s historical reputation as a hub for military and, is pushed out from rapid urbanization. Therefore it is getting people to turn away. I propose historical museum that may help citizen remind the importance of their own history and culture, and also precipitate tourists to have more interests to the site, Gangu harbor in Tongyoung.

It is undeniable that the on-line game is one of the main cause of generation gap between young and old people, therefore I suggest to reform the negative characteristics of on-line game to positive one via architectural approach.

The main structural system is a diagrid, so that the four piers ensure global stability and lateral stiffness, which is derived from the image below. The four fingers (towers) support the book (platform) with sufficient stability and balance. There are four main spaces in the building: 1) the podium for recreational activities; 2) the open plaza for open space galleries; 3) the towers for teaching facilities; and 4) the ‘floating platform’ for collaborative works. For the four towers, they employed a composite structure: vertical steel trellis structure called “diagrid” with reinforced concrete beam-slab floor systems that ensure overall stability and lateral stiffness. It also supports both the floating platform, which spans an area of 100 m x 100 m (328 ft X 328 ft), and a 60m (197 ft) long escalator. The upper frameworks are pre-stressed and post-stressed, which adds to the rigidity of the reinforced concrete slabs thus reducing sagging that might result in applied loads over time. This is the pioneering first project in Hong Kong to adopt a steel diagrid structural system.

For phase 2 construction, because most of construction materials was transferred via this plaza, the structure of the plaza had to be stiff enough.

There are two separate structures: steel and concrete. The tower, including the basement levels, is a steel structure with a concrete core. The basement level underneath the plaza is a reinforced concrete structure. The two are Wind different because of the lateral load difference. The plaza also was a construction platform for the extension, so it needed to take more gravity loads in the future, which makes sense to have a rigid concrete structure. The architect wanted an open and uniform aesthetic, so adding a huge concrete wall was not ideal, and for the floor plate allowed, the core couldn’t get any larger. The total building height is 464 ft. According to the slenderness ratio, h/13, the core (38 ft deep) alone is too shallow to handle the lateral load. Adding the shear walls gain lateral support, which can satisfy the feasible lateral stiffness. The following diagram illustrates how this makes a big difference.

Mechanical Water system
Water and refrigeration flow diagram The refrigerant machine (called chiller) has two main part, evaporator and condenser. The refrigerant such as CFCs or HCFCs takes heat when they change the phrase from liquid to the gas at low pressure in evaporator so that they can provide chilled water to AHUs. And the refrigerant releases heat when they change from gas to liquid at high pressure in condenser. The released heat is transferred to the condenser water and thrown away via cooling tower. The circulation of this water flow continues and keeps providing chilled water to AHU to make comfort indoor environment. The building does not have Refrigerant machine (chiller) on their own. But the ice company called “Unicom� has huge RM and provide chilled water to the Blue cross tower, and that is the reason why the building provide chilled water even to the tenants. (Usually condenser water is served for the tenants)
