This Project proposes a visitors centre, built directly at the city wall , in the old city (Ano Poli) of Thessaloniki. The views of the city and the sea and the direct relation to the wall are the main themes of the designed building. Functions such as tourism and culture should stimulate and revitalize the area economically.

A long straight building, that looks as floating on the city wall and offers a direct uninterrupted view of the city wall and the city/sea, forms the Exhibition Room. This main room is accompanied by other secondary functions like archive room, employee offices and Café-Restaurant that are situated on the other side of the wall and lying underground. The connection between main exhibition hall and secondary functions is underground, through an opening in the Fundaments of the wall. This “aggressive” aperture thematizes also a war motive. The building does not use room of the park, it is either parallel- above the wall or under the wall. It has a steady relation with the old wall. When above the wall, it has clear lines and its length and clarity underlines the organic and uneven structure of the wall, its set a horizon on it. When underground, the part of the building is visually connected with its fundaments. The underground part is barely seen from the outside, only the front facade is over earth, the rest of this part is covered from the terrain.

The concept of the building requires that the exhibition hall room “floats” on the city wall and underlines the uneven and organic line of the wall. Therefore the construction must be reduced to its most minimal possible. The piles must be reduced to the least necessary. The weight of the building is based basically on the middle support point. A second one works more as a holding point for the balance of the building and takes only a small part of the building weight. The static concept and the reaction of the construction was tested in laboratory with a statical bend test and for this test there was a test structural model constructed with wood. For future possible changes of the Exhibition room, a system was developed so that the central walls of the exhibition can be rotated and moved. These can change easily and fast and create different sequences of rooms. visualization

Situation plan
An existing Old building floor plan (Wiener Gründerzeitshaus) transforms into a floor plan eligible for Flatshare communities. The middle wall (load bearing and with installations) is kept for static reasons. This situation inspired the structure of the floor plan logic to a linear structure, where the secondary uses and access-corridors are along this central wall. Old Building Floor Plan 2 Appartments

Following that logic, the third floor of the exhisting old building is being renovated to a “sleeping room-private area”: This Floor becomes the Level -1 in the renovation, the dorm-rooms are set in north or they are along the access zone and they have windows in the open patios-gardens. In this Level the flats general access zone becomes community zone, meeting point (homeworker, bar kitchen, laundry room, sport room, relaxing point..) Over this private level there is a new Level-storey raised, where living rooms and flat community rooms are. This is defined as the 0 Level because the main Entrance to the flats is there. In this level there are also gardens, open spaces with grill zones, rooms for events, libraries..

“Stift Altenburg - Kurherberge” deals with the topic building in continuance. A healt and spa resort hotel is to be built near Alteburg monastery. Focus: the building stays low and plain in the facade with one opening at a side, in order to stay modest and react as a “frame” to the monastery.

The focus is on the existing building: the monastery. The only opening in south and north facade shows opens to the centre of the old building. this view can be seen through the patios inside the building. The concept is inspired from the introversy of monastery structures, and the health resort follows this principal, as it requires itself privacy and noiseless environment. In that way the windows are placed from the inside , to the patios.
