I began this project with a reflection on Nordic culture. As much as it is a heritage museum in Seattle, it has to represent the Nordic people and their immigration journey to America. I kept coming back to the same premise: that their culture began by coping with the elements they were given: stone, ice, fire, wood, and light. I further thought about the formation of both the nordic countries and Seattle, by glacial carving. This building is a manifestation of the four elements in a form shaped by wind erosion and glacial carving of the strata that compose the earth.

The buliding is conceived of as strata of earth, pierced by three glaciers that serve as the circulation and transition space between the elements of the program. The three masses move across the site from the Public (community) to Private (Storage). The west side of the site is the park allowing for both a pedestrian connection through the site to the water, and a greenspace with living machine wetlands serving as a demonstration of water management for the community.

The central glacier is the entry lobby, with the main ciruclation branching from it towards the auditorium and the galleries. The Dream of America Gallery is on the first floor, ideally placed for the 10,000+ school children who visit it every year. The main structure is heavy timber, and the ceilings are tongue and groove, adding warmth to the white gallery walls. The roof is covered with solar panels, providing 349,000kWh of power, and the ability to support an EUI of 18.6 kBtu/sf/yr.

Education Building as an intersection between two landscapes, original meadows and futuristic aquaponics
Site Narrative: A Journey through Historical Landscapes
The Education Building lies at an intersection between landscapes. It strives to explore a new typology of building integration in the landscape in which the modern Aquaponic Landscape and the Original Meadow Landscape of Detroit come together.
The program is from the NOMA competition, to create a new Urban Agriculture hub on this brownfield site. There is currently a lot of urban agriculture in Detroit, but there are not many resources for the larger community for techniques, sharing of equipment, and new technologies in farming. I began this project by thinking about the context of the site and the site narrative. With the mix of agriculture and industry in Detroit, I decided the narrative would be a journey through the history of agriculture. Counter clockwise around the site, beginning on the Southeast main entry corner, (1) there are open fields, which progress into (2) strip farming inspired by farming along the Detroit river, then into (3) landscape restoration and outdoor urban agriculture, and finally into (4) indoor farming and the aquaponic greenhouse.
The greenhouses are pyramidal, reminiscent of the pyramids of Egypt. They are designed as temples to the modern agriculture process. In Detroit the winters are brutal, making outdoor farming nearly impossible year round. However, with indoor farming and aquaponics, year-round food production is possible. The education building is at the intersection of the new and old landscapes, and is where the community programs and research are based. This building is embedded in the landscape, intersecting it in different ways then the other buildings on the site.

The education building has three landscape courtyards, two as fingers intersection the building, and one as a vertical garden in the center. The black panels on the East, West, and South facade of the education building are water walls integrated with the window system, which in this climate work perfectly to absorb the heat on cold winter days and re-radiate it back into the classroom and research spaces behind.

Yakima Urban Winery with Professor Dan Stettler
Site: decommissioned sawmill site in an under utilized part of Yakima Programs: Sketch-up, V-Ray, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, hand-built and laser cut models
The project was about thinking about a multitude of scales, from the urban site program to the wall section of the building. Over the course of the term we spent 1 week on site and precedents, 2 weeks on the urban design, 4 weeks on the building design, and 1 week on the wall section development before bringing everything together for the final presentation. The site is about creating a connection through the site, connection the residential neighborhood to the new commercial development area. The scale of the streets off of the plaza are small, modeled after pedestrian streets in Italian hillside towns, with low-rise mixed use developments to infuse residents into the new commercial area.
The winery building is organize around a central exterior courtyard at which point the solid, rammed earth production areas intersect the light wood frame and glass public spaces. From the courtyard, visitors can look down into the barrel storage area, as well as into in the fermentation and grape pressing areas. The private tasting room hovers above the barrels as a glass room inside the solid volume. The simple plan allows the spaces to be adaptable to changes and future needs of the winery. The production areas are composed of insulated rammed earth walls, from on-site ground that was removed for the spaces to be below grade.

This is one of the first projects I did while working for Fergus Garber Young in Palo Alto, California. It was a remodel of the living room, dining room, kitchen and master suite. For this project, I made most of the permit and construction documents sets, including the images shown above from the sets. I worked on everything from the floor plans and required notes, to the kitchen elevations and window details. I developed the detail for the light shelf and exterior overhang on my own. The building was modeled in ArchiCAD, where the drawings were also produced. The images are of the final interior space after opening many of the interior walls.

Since this was a group studio, we each had a role. I led one of the two groups during small group development. Once one design was seleced, I led the plan development team and assisted with elevation development. I managed class task groups and communication between groups, trying to keep track of changes to make sure the necessary people were updated. Another student and I created all the permit documents in ArchiCAD. Ths studio required a lot of coordiantion, which was a great learning experience for me. Also as a gradaute student, I spend a great deal of time teaching my undergraduate studiomates about permit sets and creating drawings beyond those for typical final reviews.

Site: In-fill lot in the Capital Hill neighborhood of Seattle with alley access Programs: Revit, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, hand-built models
To the left and right are sun diagrams showing the shadows cast onto the town home complex by its neighbors to the South as well as shadows the complex casts on its neighbors to the North. To the left is a cool Spring afternoon in March, during which the Northern town homes have warm Southern light pouring into their windows, due to the two story Southern units. To the right, during winter, the shadows that are cast onto the town homes by its neighbor to the South are minimal. However, the single family home to the North is cast into partial shade.

Using the proposed changes to the Seattle building code and the new green point system, I designed a multi-family housing complex addressing community needs on an urban in-fill site with alley access. After exploring multiple massing options on the site with an FAR of 1.4, the option I chose, based on the solar analysis and number of units, was an L-shape of town homes, with additional smaller units on the south side, to not block the sunlight on the complex. The concept is a central courtyard parti which fosters resident interactions achieved by moving the parking to the exterior, leaving the interior, normally reserved for parking, to the residents as community space. The entrances of the eight-home development all reside on the central court, which has space for a barbecue area and a community garden.

Ribbon Chair with Professor NIls-Ole Zib Copenhagen, Denmark

Given 10m2 of veneer, I designed a chair inspired from Scandinavian designs. Given the flexible ribbon-like quality of veneer, this design stands to mimic a ribbon, something that cannot be constructed of solid wood. I have worked with solid wood many times, and wanted to create something that was inconceivable in anything but veneer, a highly flexible material. Although the design appears simple, the construction method was rather complicated, requiring approximately 240 hours of time in the wood shop, because a mold made of steel was first created over which the veneer could be vacuum formed.
Given the ribbon concept, the entire chair excluding the seat piece is made from one long piece of veneer. The difficulty in construction came once the veneer was vacuum formed, the mold had to be extracted from the veneer, rather then the veneer removed from the mold as is typically done.

This table was created as an intersection between an organic, live edge slab of maple, and 1/4� steel plate. Every piece of the table, including the connectors between the steel and wood were fabricated by myself utilizing the range of tools in our workshop. The live edge in the middle creates a small slit with which to see the metal below, then the two pieces join together to cascade over the miter joint. I welded plate steel to create the chevron below, designed to angle in at the base to prevent toe-stubbing. The metal connectors were created on the metal lathe and milling machines to my table’s specifications.

Compared to typical North American residential construction, the Passive House standard provides homes that reduce energy use by 90%, create consistent thermally comfortable homes and provides healthy air quality. In the U.S., twenty-five houses have received Passive House certification since 2003. Verification of performance aspects of the Passive House standard will inform the community of designers about post occupancy success of such construction. Our study compares the actual performance of Passive Houses to their modeled criteria by evaluating energy bills, surveying occupants about their thermal comfort and perceived indoor air quality, and measuring on site physical conditions.
Lillis Business Complex classrooms provide 100% outside air via mechanical and mixed-mode ventilation. Recently, CO2 sensors were installed in the exhaust ducts to tie ventilation rates to room occupancy for additional energy savings. This study describes and illustrates the hybrid ventilation system and compares ventilation rates before and after the CO2 demand controlled ventilation (DCV) regime was implemented. We hypothesized that the preDCV classrooms were overventilated during occupied periods and that the DCV system provides the designed ventilation rate of 15cfm/person. In 2007, the University of Oregon signed the Presidents Climate Commitment to take steps toward becoming a carbon neutral campus. For our case study, we selected Pacific Hall, a double-loaded corridor building, which relies solely on mechanical cooling, because of its orientation and potential for passive cooling.. Due to its north-south orientation, occupants on the east and west sides often complain of thermal discomfort in the morning and the afternoon. Our approach to determining the passive cooling potential includes: 1) climate analysis, 2) building analysis, 3) measure of base case conditions, and 4) development of appropriate climate-responsive renovation strategies. We evaluated the effectiveness of these strategies through 5) prediction of comfort using the ASHRAE Standard 55-2010, 6) manual calculations using passive cooling guidelines and computer simulations to examine energy use comparisons. Based on our research, Pacific Hall has the potential to rely on passive cooling for at least 5 months of the year with minor interior renovations.

A number of solar tools assist designers in evaluating a site for shading, solar access, daylighting design, photovoltaic placement, and passive solar heating potential. In the last ten years, handheld equipment and their software capabilities have evolved; coupled with the existing manual tools, we now have a wide range of tools available for solar analysis. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of solar site analysis tools from the perspective design inputs needed for Passive House certification. Two locations (Eugene, Oregon and Palo Alto, California) are used as base cases for evaluation. We present the results from onsite measurements, software predictions, output accuracy, ease of use, and other criteria to discuss the capabilities of the tools in education and in architectural design practice.
