White Mustangs and red Cadillacs that cruise down the highway and land on the surface of the moon. Bambi eyes, baby doll hair and the delicacy of a blue velvet gown. Tinges of raspberry, sweet dripping peaches and a burst of cherry in the evening glow. Silver starlets and golden gods in the Chateau Marmont turning diamonds into snow. Marilyn Monroe and Elvis are beacons of the good life. Norman Rockwell is the lifeblood of the American dream. The American flag ripples as it flies, set upon the fading sunset that paints the heavens red and orange, the stars escape the flag and fill the night sky. The tendrils of warm cigarette smoke that dance in the air of a derelict motel. Sticky ice cream, cold cola, the wild screams at Coney Island and a gunshot in the fading radiance of summer. Velvety Arizona rain, Jasmine perfume mixed with the scent of cognac fumes. Red carpets, a camera flash and the unbridled opulence of Hollywood Addiction, betrayal, violence and Americas most destructive minds Lizzy sat on the sand, watching the hypnotic and restless waves and heard the name Lana Del Rey echo on the breeze. In 2019 no musical artist welcomes this intoxicating but flawed fantasy more acutely than Lana Del Rey.

The Life Story

Lizzy Grant She was born in Lake Placid, in upstate New York, 1985. Grant says growing up in a resort town inspired the sisters’ mutual appreciation for visual representations of the American Dream. While the decadent camps on Lake Placid didn’t belong to them, they took comfort in their cinematic grandeur.

At 14, Grant was sent to Kent boarding school in Connecticut to deal with her drinking problem. In her feature as GQ magazine’s 2012 Woman of the Year, she said, “I was a big drinker at the time. I would drink every day. I would drink alone. I thought the whole concept was so fucking cool.”

Lizzy started studying philosophy when, aged 18, her uncle taught her "six basic chords" on the guitar."I realised I could probably write a million songs with those six chords so I moved to New York and I took a couple of years to just write whatever I wanted."

She enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx to study philosophy and began volunteering at homeless and drug-and alcohol-rehabilitation programs. Around this time, she also began singing at Williamsburg and Lower East Side venues like Laila Lounge, Galapagos, The Living Room, and The Bitter End.

In 2008, while still in college, she signed a $10,000 record Her first record ‘Lana Del Rey A.K.A lizzy Grant was redeal with an indie label called 5 Points, teaming up with corded in 2008 and released in 2010. record producer David kahne.

In a twist of irony, the DIY video, thick with nostalgia, was refreshing compared to the playful pop New Jersey. She began working with producer David Kahne on an EP, called ‘Kill Kill’ which she released of 2012. Lana Del Rey sat in her cinematic sadness, looking longingly at the camera for someone to give her later that year as Lizzy Grant. The record flopped and was pulled from Itunes three months later. of managers and lawyers who wanted a name that they thought better fitted the sound of the music” However when asked about her construct in a 2012 interview with Pitchfork, she diverted the subject by talking about her appreciation for Elvis “Elvis had good management and that’s why he looks well-crafted but actually-- other than his custom-made jump suits-- he was always a gentleman, always a star, had a face like a god, and a voice like a dark angel”. An artist reinventing themselves is nothing new, from the long haired Davie Bowie in Hunky Dory, into the melting pot of space, makeup and narcissism that would become Ziggy Stardust and Madonna’s switching personas, they have cultivated an image that is of their own imagination. Throughout her career Lana del Rey has managed to remain somewhat of an enigma, there’s no denying her cinematic grandeur appeal, but in true Lynch fashion, her tales of Ill-fated relationships that plague her exhausted heart, have sustained and become a key part of her image, regardless if she’s acting or not. Fast forward to 2019, Lana Del Rey is an award-winning multiplatinum singer, model and poet, who has successfully released five albums under her new persona. From 2011 to 2019 the aesthetic references surrounding her haven’t changed- Hollywood Vintage, tragic figures, the flickering buzz of the Chateau Marmont sign at night, and the last echoes of laughter at Coney Island during the day. These references are so pungent and graphic that matched with her imagined stories, she barely has to move as the image is working so hard. To orchestrate such a performance of this magnitude, Del Rey has paired her gloomy pop with layers of real and imagined characters – a silk jacket dress paired with an A-line skirt when playing Jaqueline Kennedy, a full length evening sheath dress encrusted with rhinestones when impersonating Marilyn Monroe, a good witch of the west coast and a blossoming hippy dressed in white lace and daisies, are all a part of her hazy fantasy. Lana Del Rey has become so fictionalised, her real persona is opaque and she has now become more associated with the mosaic of characters that complete her image. She has used the idea malleability, shapeshifting into new personas that are all derived from the same wholly dark, elegant lyric Factory, but still manage to remain utterly compelling. These constant references could soon become cliché, but for now, Del Rey continues to allure, and the debate to whether Lana Del Rey is authentic, may soon die, just like Lizzy.

However, in the novel, Humbert Humbert ruthlessly rapes Lolita as he listens to ‘her sobs in the night – every night, every night – the moment I feigned sleep’. For her music Video for ‘Ride’, Del Rey becomes her own mythologised Lolita, using the novels descriptions of “her auburn ringlets fell all over her skinned knee” “her lips as red as licked red candy” “generously full skirts and swimming suits” “She was barefooted; her toenails showed remnants of cherry-red polish” as a way to style herself as Lolita.
