Starting a Grow Room in 6 Easy Steps This entry was posted on October 8, 2014 by grokart. An indoor grow room is the perfect choice for gardeners who don’t have access to outdoor space, live in a region not suited to growing outdoors, or want a more controlled environment in which to raise plants, flowers, vegetables or herbs. Once you know what type of plants and how many you want to grow, getting started is fairly easy - use these tips. 1. Find a space. You will want a space that can be completely dark when necessary, as most plants require 12 hours of light and 12 hours of complete darkness as part of their growth. Depending on how many plants you want to grow, you can choose a closet, an interior room, or an area whose windows can completely block out sunlight. 2. Prepare your growing bed. Consult with a local garden center on what type of container, soil alternative, and nutrients will best suit you and your plants’ needs. 3. Choose your indoor grow lights. Whether you choose metal halide, high-pressure sodium, dual arc or LED indoor grow lights will depend on your budget, space constraints and what you are growing. 4. Make sure you have proper ventilation. Plants deplete carbon dioxide, and fresh air is necessary to replace what they use up. 5. Have a cooling system in place. Whether you use cooled reflectors, a fan or some other method, your plants will need the correct temperature (usually between 65 degrees and 80 degrees Fahrenheit) to insure they don’t overheat. A thermometer is helpful for measuring temperature, and a fan does double duty by helping to keep the air moving, discouraging fungus and mold. 6. Make sure the room is humid enough. The type of plants you are growing and where you live will determine if you need a humidifier to keep your indoor garden’s atmosphere moist. You will also want to have a magnifying glass – it can help you spot bugs and fungus more quickly – as well as a chair (if space allows) so you can sit down and be at root level when looking at and tending to your plants.
