‘The Lifehouse’

1

BRIEF: REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR THE MENTALLY ILL SITE: UPHILL QUARRY, WESTON SUPER MARE Acting as a halfway house between hospitalisation and every day life, the centre will provide support to sufferers of depression in coping with every day life, through to recovery. It seeks to inspire a regained sense of purpose through an escape from the pressures of modern day life, the revival of basic human interaction, and connection to nature.

BRIEF: INSTITUTE OF CINEMA SITE: PARADE GARDENS, BATH To produce an integrated piece of architecture that in its organisation, materiality, structural form and environmental approach embodies and expresses the overall intent of the building, with a contemplative awareness of the meaningful composition of space’s resonance with atmosphere and narrative in relation to cinema and film. Investigate how a sense of ‘civitas’ can be restored and developed within the transitory (non) spaces of the modern city and in particular a part of Bath that whilst classically beautiful, arguably is underused.

12

‘ REMOVED FROM THE CITY ’ Parade Gardens forms an escape from the cityscape. This separation is exaggerated by the change in level. Despite being over looked by the city, it remains secluded by having its main out look over the park and limited views of the city.

13

‘ DISCONNECTED BANKS ’ The eastern bank of the River Avon is currently disconnected from the park which is further emphasised by the dense screen of trees on the west bank.

14

Parade Gardens is an important public space, but is under-utilised in its current form. We did not want to supress the character of the park, but add to it. The river is the most disconnected part of the space - we aim to inhabit the bank, a space which is betwixt and between the river and the park. This will bring it back into the public realm, enhancing a space within Bath which remains as an element of the historic natural level. Through this we aim to create a narrative between the city scape and nature.

Centre for British Culture BRIEF: COMMUNITY CENTRE SITE LOCATION: BASTYA UTCA, BUDAPEST To design a centre for British culture, art and studies in the energetic city of Budapest. To foster knowledge of British culture and teach English. The centre must include an English language centre, a multi media library, a flexible theatre/ performance space, an art exhibtion spaxe for the contemporary artists Lovas Ilona and Harry Sykes, an associated public realm, and one additional space for a particular use of your choice, connected to the culture of Budapest

Bicton Yoga Centre BRIEF: YOGA CENTRE AND RETREAT SITE LOCATION: BICTON, DEVON. A

27

The initial scheme focused on our concept of escaping reality and seperating the more functional spaces from the yoga centre, in order to create a feeling of ‘a different world.’ We created a long string of buildings along the north side of the site, leading to our yoga centre at the south east end of the site. To improve the functionality of the scheme we decided to rotate the axis at a right angle and position it towards the west of the site. This move left our entrance in the same area, but left less walking distance to the buildings from the car park, as well as making use of the beautifully enclosed corner to the west of the site, by the fork of the river. This was the ideal spot to position our yoga studios.
