project 1 Vertiport
Tempelhof Vertiport - THV
The studio & the project
year: 2023
course: Msc. 3/4
Complex projects
subject Airport project Vertiport location Tempelhof, Berlin, Germany
The complex studio, bodies & building Berlin focus is the building and to create a complex building design that is one of Berlin. The research of the vertiport project investigates what type of building could facilitate urban air mobility as a new sustainable mode of transportation. The research investigated.
Flows, security, efficiency, urban implementation, the relation of the vehicle to the building as well as the human scale and a passenger experience. This relationship between the building as a machine, the human scale and the relation with the urban area is the architectural design challenge. And also, the relation between the project, the studio and the master.
There is already a lot of research on urban air mobility regarding the technical aspects, social implementation, and business models. A few large architectural firms like MVRDV and Foster & Partners have already made design concepts for companies like Airbus for vertiport in Asia. However, a concept has remained. In the coming future it will be very possible that we will see the first large scale vertiport being built. However, the research into the architectural design and the requirements therefore have not yet been developed.
The Vertiport project and the research tries to give the first design brief and principles of the vertiport building typology that is located in the inner-city of a European capital. Giving an insight into the design considerations for similar projects within these urban areas.
The research question, “What new building typology will emerge as a result of the implementation of urban air mobility?”. A broad question that in another research has not yet been fully answered.
To create the design brief for the vertiport answers needed to be found regarding the client, site and program. The main research strategy was to gain a wide range of knowledge on all important aspects of the project to create a final integrated design. The research needed to explore contextual factors, user requirements, building requirements, aviation safety rules, technological advancements, and sustainable practices, processes, and flows.
The main sub question to be asked was how the process is different from the same as the process in airports. This first part of the research was done by a literature and case study, to find what processes should be added or eliminated from that of a vertiport. The question that followed was what do these changes in processes mean for the spatial layout of the building as well as the passenger experience.
6
introduction
The findings of the research concerning the client brought to light the most important client, the passengers and the staff, which are the daily users of the building, and the needs of these clients have the highest priority. For the needs of the city of berlin the vertiport represents a new gateway into berlin, a new Luftbahn. The designs express this new way of travel and activate people to use this mode of transportation as well as to represent the city of Berlin.
The research into urban air mobility and the implementation of a vertiport in the urban area emphasized the importance of social acceptance. This led to the importance of the building giving back to the urban area and the residents in the form of access, program, and exterior experience of the building.
The research showed that a vertiport is a combination of a heliport and an airport, the apron layout of a heliport and the program of an airport. By the literature research and the case studies it became clear the program of the vertiport can be compared
to that of an airport by eliminating processes. The process of passport check could be eliminated because an evtol could only travel distances to Schengen countries, thus not needing a passport control. Another process that spatially counted for a third of an airport's square meters was the baggage handling system. Due to the size of the evtol vehicles only hand luggage can be taken on board. By eliminating these processes, the program/sqm ratio of the vertiport was found. The main program consists of arrivals hall, departures hall, security, airside lounge area, gates, and the apron.
The size of the building was possible to establish by looking at the ratio of m2/passenger/hour at stations and airports. The findings of these data concluded that the building needs a total of 60.000sqm to provide for 10 million passengers. Regarding the user flows within the vertiport were identical to that of and airport in regarding the process steps (minus eliminated processes )It became evident that there needs to be a separated flow in arriving and departing passengers, and that in terms of wayfin-

ding the passengers need to be able to have sightling to the next step in the process. This means that spatially the building needs to be organized in such a way that for example the passenger can clearly see the route to security in the departure hall and for instance the exit in the arrivals.
Regarding the functionality of the project the research concluded the minimum capacity for a vertiport that can handle 10 million passengers a year the layout of apron had to be consistent of at least 6 takeoff and landing pads and 24 gates in total.
The site requirements were acquired by a combination of individual and group research. These requirements led to the site location of an old Rangierbahnhof next to Tempelhof station.
The vertiport consist of 3 modules that can work autominmoulsy and can be linked together via an airbridge and via the main south axes under the canopy along the south facade. By using this strategy the building can be upscaled based on the demand for urban air mobility.

For arriving and departing passengers going on their onward journey The program needs to have hospitality and human dimension, long lines of sight and spatial quality. Transparent, light and elegant and rhythmic. To create a meaningful passenger journey. And at to the intuitive way finding The layout of the program must be function in order to accommodate the different users and the urban air mobility process. The program needs to manage a large flow of the users arriving and departing from secure to un secure Travellers arriving in the late and early hours of the day should feel accommodated the available program. As well for the area not to be unpleasant, but to have a welcoming and safe appearance The new building will need to be integrated, not only on a infrastructural level but also socially. year: 2022 course: Msc. 2 Global Housing subject
Social Housing, Urban planning project Housing masterplan location
Jardim Gaivotas, São Paulo, Brasil
In Spring 2022, a new run of the collaborative project was organized by Prof. Medrano and Dr. Mota, working in collaboration with Dr. Vanessa Grossman from TU Delft, and the same team of instructors from FAU USP. The courses included were the TU Delft design studio “Global Housing: On the Margin” and the FAU USP course “Arquitetura, espaço e sociedade: teoria e crítica (Architecture, space and society: theory and criticism)”.
The mission was to create a design for the redevelopment of a neighborhood in the favelas in the São Paulo, named Jardim Gaivotas.
The challenges of this neighborhoud are the rabip urban expansion of São Paulo and the need for 500.00 homes. The mobility, citizens of the Grajaú region spend a large amount of time commuting and traveling in São Paulo, specifically to the metropolitan area. According to the ministry of labor, 54% of job opportunities are concentrated here. Complications for residents of Grajaú are also the lack of services such as health, leisure and utilities.
In addition it is an occupied territory, the process of redevelopment often now goes hand in hand with the repossession of land and a violent evictions, where families and communities when are stripped from their homes. So where does the community go?
Evicted citizen are in the lowest income group and are forced to start over. This means they have to live in poverty for longer and lack of support from the government results in further appropriation of territory. So these people find themselves in a downward spiral

introduction
The current situation
The neighbourhood
situation drawing of the redevelopment
Pollution of the reservoir could be an indirect result of redevelopment process in occupied areas. The attitude of distrust towards the state leads to people paying less attention to other aspects such as the environment which often leads to landslides during heavy rainfall where entire homes are swept away.
Could this process be reverted if we reduce the anonymity between residents and if we bring the state and people of Grajaú closer together?
Much of the unbuilt space on site is inaccessible and has been claimed by residents aiming to expand or settle. These open spaces are fenced off with recycled construction materials. the only public open spaces available to the residents of J.G. are currently the streets.
Public spaces could make it easier for residents to come together which promotes a sense of unity which has been the strategy in newly developed favelas.

Future vision for Jardim gaivotas
Taking into account the need to not only densify the area but also the current community that has appropriated this area and has made it their home for the last decade. How do we go about adapting and changing these neighborhoods while having respect for the social fabric as well as the environment and its challenges.
With this in mind the new masterplan for Jardim Qaivotas is set out to finding a new way of integrating a new community within the existing (new residents) community and the rehome the existing community in the new urban developments. With the integration of new infrastructure.
Type of housing
The area set to be redeveloped needed to consist of affordable housing of the lowest minimum wage, Social-interest housing and of popular market housing*. This in order to create a diverse community.

The gallery apartments
The gallery provides a walk way towards two apartments as well as a large outside space for the residents to use together and privately. at the backside of the apartment the building also has access to balconies. The main reason for the design of the apartments to have as many outside spaces as possible is due to the terrible covid outbreak that took place in the city. It has become of utmost importance to design a dwelling that improves the resilience of the residents and can provide decent outside spaces in times like an outbreak. Furthermore, in addition to resilience it is
as well important to make the outside space accessible for all the residents, that way everyone is Responsible and trust can be built and walls and gates torn down so the gap is not met by gates and divisions within the apartment blocks.

Extreme Architecture
subject Housing project Studenthousing location
Faculty of Architecture, Delft, The Netherlands
The course extreme architecture took place during the covid pandemic. During this time the location for the project was the faculty of bouwkunde in Delft. The main objective was to create student housing and to design a building with regards to the urban heat island effect. Further program in the building was decided on the basis of our own research and concept.
The temperature at the location is very high during the summer months, due to large surface of the parking lot area, the surrounding buildings, and the little use of green. The can and should be changed to make the area more liveable and resilient against the urban heat island effect.
Circulair building system combined with a new take on the use of green that also looks at the impact of the building on the soil, that gives people and nature the opportunity to rebuild and strengthen together to build resilience against the Urban Heat Island Effects
The demountable buildings and walking paths are designed in such a way that it has the least impact on the soil, so when the buildings are adapted or demounted, what will remain is relatively healthy soil.
By creating a demoutable and scalable timber structure the building can be easily used for different functions, such as exposition halls extra study spaces, lecture hall or even student bars. The demountability of the walls and floors can changed during the use, whitout the need to demolish of demount the building.
Not Just the use of green will contribute to the resilience of a building towards the UHIE but also the material used can add to the resilience of a building and to the circularity of the building. By designing a circular building you are not only adding a solution but also contributing to a sustainable world and thus tackle the UHIE at its roots.

Structure
Timber Glulam beams and columns made up out of Spruce and Larch wood. Which can be found inlands in the Netherlands
Facade
To assure the demountability of the facade, the elements are thus designed that there are two standard facade frames that are connected to the main structure. On the long side a triple frame and on the end side a single frame. Within this fixed frame there are various adaptations that can be made.
Floors
By using prefabricated Timber-Concrete-Composite floor slaps the structure will have increased stability and the fire resistance on each floor enhances.
The prefabricated Timber-Concrete-Com-
posite floor slabs Also provide flexibility within the floor plans making it possible to change staircases and take out entire floors to create a two story height. prefabricated Timber-Concrete-Composite floor slabs: 1250x6000mm
On Laminated veneer lumber ribbedfloor. Screwing prefabricated concrete elements to a timber support structure on site allows for a largely prefabricated, dry construction
Process
The materials can also be separated when the building is demounted, and then reused.

During my graduation year I worked on the interior design manual for a project of Sander Architecten and Studio Protoype.
The hospitals in Ghana were already designed and our job was to create and interior design from casco. The strategy was to create archetypes of the different functions in order to create an entire manual for the client to use. We were also in charge of creating the concept for the interior. This was a very interesting challenge due to the differences in culture, signing, social structures, climate and budget. A very educational project also in terms of functions, flow, hygiene, materials, etc. that are specific to hospitals.
In the next few pages there are a few pages and plans that I created as an example.

Work 2 Outside toiletbox
Menno’s doos
year: 2023
project private location Koten the netherlands
This project started right after my graduation. The description is to renovate a current exposition building, design a new outside bar where the integration of the garden plays an important role and in addition to design an outside toilet for events.
I am active in all the phases of the project. The current phase is to create the concepts and preliminary design. Eventually this will move to the technical phase and eventually the execution. It is very educational to have a role in a smaller size project like this to experience all the design phases.
Since the project is ongoing I have put some first impressions of the concept into this portfolio.
