At The Metro East Messenger, we love to highlight small local businesses that we think you should know about. In this issue we are featuring The Command Post Bar and Grill in Troy, IL.
The Command Post Bar and Grill 104 N Main St, Troy, IL 62294 (618) 667-9892 The Troy American Legion implemented the Command Post Bar and Grill two short years ago. Since the opening of the full bar and grill they have really started to hit their stride. They are in downtown Troy at the main intersection which makes for easy access for Troy residents or people from out of town. Open to the public for lunch and dinner, the kitchen offers a great “bar style” menu with some surprising specials that you may not expect. “We keep updating our menu all the time to give our patrons the variety they want, “ says Tim Tolbert. Their next venture will be Sunday brunch with a Bloody Mary bar (with all the fixings!) Looking for entertainment? The Command Post has plenty to offer! With such a large venue they can offer entertainment that Troy typically does not have. Everything from comedians to indoor corn hole, the Command Post is all about mixing it up to keep things interesting and fun. Look for a beer pong tournament and wine and beer tastings as some upcoming things to take advantage of. Nightly they have gaming machines, pool tables, dart boards, and Chive TV to keep you entertained for hours. Even with all this fun and food, the legion and Command Post has not forgotten about their main purpose, to serve. Being a not for profit, the Legion gives back to many veteran organizations in the area and around the country. All Troy American Legion members are given a discount. To see if you qualify for membership, give them a call. Next year the Legion and Command Post will be starting a monthly benefit where a portion of proceeds will go to a charitable organization. “Since we are all volunteers that have served our country, we have a strong desire to give back. This bar and grill gives us that opportunity to do so. We are looking forward to working with causes such as the MS foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness, and other places that we can help make a difference.” Be sure to visit The Command Post soon and follow their Facebook page for updates on specials and upcoming events!

Bursting with all the fresh flavors of fall, it’s a perfect side dish. Or try some of the add ins below to transform it into a whole meal!
Fall Harvest Salad (Yields 6 Servings)
Salad Ingredients: 1 ½ lbs. of Brussel Sprouts 1 Large Sweet Potato, rinsed and small diced (leave skin on) 1 Pear, thinly sliced 1 Small Red Onion, thinly sliced 2 Tsp Olive Oil 1/2 Tsp Salt 1/8 Tsp Pepper ¼ Tsp Turmeric (optional) ½ cup of Pomegranate Seeds or Craisins ½ cup Feta Cheese 1 cup Candied Walnuts
Cranberry Vinaigrette Ingredients: 1/3 cup Cranberry Sauce (homemade or store bought) 1/3 cup of Olive Oil 2 Tbsp. Dijon Mustard 2 Tbsp. Orange Juice 2 Tbsp. Sherry or Red Wine Vinegar Salt and Pepper to taste
Directions Preheat oven to 425*. Layer diced sweet potatoes on a sheet pan, drizzle with 2 tsp of olive oil and a pinch of salt, pepper and turmeric. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes. Set off to the side to cool once finished. While the Sweet potatoes are cooking, prepare your Brussel sprouts. Trim off the tough ends and begin to thinly slice your sprouts. (If you have a food processor, you can easily shred your sprouts as well). In a Large bowl, add your Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes and remaining ingredients. Set Aside.
For the dressing, grab a mason jar or blender. Add cranberry sauce, oil, Dijon, vinegar, salt, pepper, and orange juice. Shake well or blend until dressing is fully emulsified. Pour dressing over Salad and Enjoy! Add in ideas (optional): Leftover turkey, Bacon, Goat Cheese, Quinoa/Farro/Lentils, Butternut or Acorn Squash. www.metroeastmessenger.com
