Bobby’s Frozen Custard is fan favorite in the Metro East! This rich custard is different from the rest because it’s made hourly and served fresh from the machine and not hardened. We highly recommend the Turtle Sundae or Concrete, but all their specialty treats are amazing. They also have a plenty of outdoor seating, fun 50’s music and brand-new drive thru. Check out their website for upcoming outdoor concerts with bands and fun “kid’s nights.” 2525 N. Center St. (Rte. 159), Maryville. bobbysfrozencustard.com

What’s The Difference Between Ice Cream and Custard? Ice cream and custard are both made from cream or milk and sugar. They come in a wide array of flavors and can be served on cones, in cups, or as shakes. But according to the FDA, one key difference sets the two apart: It’s all about the yolks. Ice cream contains at least 10 percent milkfat and less than 1.4 percent egg yolk, while custard contains at least 10 percent milkfat but must have more than 1.4 percent egg yolk. Ice cream machines mix in more air for a fluffier result, and custard machines incorporate very little air for a creamier texture. Ice cream can have up to 100 percent overrun (meaning one gallon of ice-cream base makes two gallons of finished ice cream after the air is incorporated), while custard typically has around 20 percent.

Route 66 Creamery If you’re looking for looking for a nostalgic spot with good old fashion American food and treats, Route 66 Creamery in Hamel is the place to be. It’s worth the trip to this tiny town to sit back and relax in one of their outdoor porch swings, enjoy one of their creative concretes (or steak burgers!) and let the ice cream take you back to simpler times. They also have monthly car gatherings with live music on the 3rd Saturday of every month (May-Oct). 11 South Old Route 66, Hamel. facebook.com/rt66creamery White Cottage, located in Belleville, has been in business for 75 years. They are offer great burgers and sandwiches, but also have an awesome selection of homemade ice cream and specialty sundaes. Lebanon Ave, Belleville. whitecottageicecream.com Annie’s Frozen Custard in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, just celebrated their 26th anniversary. They are known for their amazing custard, cute atmosphere and plentiful seating (indoor and outdoor). Want to take it home? They have many flavors available by the quart to grab and go. Gator’s Fabulous Frozen Custard is another local favorite that has been around for over 25 years. Gator’s also gives a portion of their sales to Safe Families for Children and The Restore Network, two charities that work hard to help support families and children in crisis. 406 W.
