WE HAVE WHITE and this is black now do the math For the biennial art & design conference Integrated all students in their 3d bachelor year — no matter what department you are in, we are all one soul, one mind, one creation — are asked to create a short film about a color. Our impression of the color and what we see in it. This short film, strictly defined by some serious rules, will be shown during the coffee break at the conference, held in de Singel. All the colors from the rainbow will be shown, brought into a film of a few minutes. the fluidity in between Integrated is a biennial art & design conference organized by St Lucas University College of Art & Design Antwerp in collaboration with deSingel International Arts Campus Antwerp. Integrated2013 will take place on Thursday 24 & Friday 25 October 2013 in deSingel, from 09:30 to 19:30.As an interdisciplinary conference, Integrated logically abstains from focusing on a single central theme. It behaves rather like an intangible colourful fluid that lodges itself between a range of visions and philosophies. It is a forum with high festival content at which speakers can compare their work, design processes, sources of inspiration and methodologies, leaving those present with a sense of ‘indigestion’ that can be interpreted as: ‘Well, I need to catch my breath, but at least I was there’. Integrated is now in its fourth edition and wishes to keep its finger on the pulse by tracking new developments and trends. That is why Integrated is organised every second year, and not annually. 8.156

White is the color of milk and fresh snow. It is the color produced by the reflection, transmission or emission of all wavelengths of visible light, without absorption. As a symbol, white is the opposite of black, and often represents light in contrast with darkness. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, white is the color most often associated with innocence, perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, lightness, and exactitude.

We tried to capture our emotion for the color white on tape. We feel that white IS the fluidity in between and that we are the most neutral color as the most bespoken color at the same time. We are PEACE in this amazing overload, we are everything, every other color is not. We wanted to be the breath through the lectures, we want to be a moment of ZEN. This we tried by blurring our film, without being tiring. I think we did a wonderful job, unfortunately we didn’t got chosen for the conference.

The purpose of this group assignment is to do research, to make a matrix of the subject and try to make as much associations as possible. These associations need to be discovered need to be searched, I mean... DELVE DEEPER. Go underground, try to find new stuff, cool stuff, hot stuff. Get the research done, throw it on wordpress and make a wonderful e-publication of your self chosen theme. Do this in group, for that means; all love, no hatred. this is absurd, guys An absurdity is a thing that is extremely unreasonable, so as to be foolish or not taken seriously, or the state of being so. “Absurd” is an adjective used to describe an absurdity, e.g., “this encyclopedia article is absurd.” It derives from the Latin absurdum meaning “out of tune”, hence irrational. The Latin surdus means “deaf”, implying stupidity. Absurdity is contrasted with seriousness in reasoning. In general usage, absurdity may be synonymous with ridiculousness and nonsense. In specialized usage, absurdity is related to extremes in bad reasoning or pointlessness in reasoning; ridiculousness is related to extremes of incongruous juxtaposition, laughter, and ridicule; and nonsense is related to a lack of meaningfulness.

A LIKES ME

Art historian Uwe Schneede considers this performance pivotal for the reception of German avantgarde art in the U.S.A., it paved the way for the recognition of Beuys’ own work, but also that of contemporaries such as Lüpertz, Baselitz, Kiefer and many others in the 1980s. In May 1974 Beuys flew to New York and was taken by ambulance to the site of the performance, a room in the René Block Gallery at 409 West Broadway. Beuys lay on the ambulance stretcher swathed in felt. He shared this room with a wild coyote, for eight hours over three days. At times he stood, wrapped in a thick, grey blanket of felt, leaning on a large shepherd’s staff. At times he lay on the straw, at times he watched the coyote as the coyote watched him and cautiously circled the man, or shredded the blanket to pieces, and at times he engaged in symbolic gestures, such as striking a large triangle or tossing his leather gloves to the animal; the performance continuously shifted between elements that were required by the realities of the situation, and elements that had purely symbolic character. At the end of the three days, Beuys hugged the coyote that had grown quite tolerant of him, and was taken to the airport. Again he rode in a veiled ambulance, leaving America without having set foot on its ground. As Beuys later explained: ‘I wanted to isolate myself, insulate myself, see nothing of America other than the coyote.’ All photos by walkerart.org

Hans Op de Beeck (1969) is a Belgian visual artist whose work includes sculpture, installation, video work and photography. He has been active in the international art scene since the late 90s, and in 2001 won the Young Belgian Painters Award. Op de Beeck’s work revolves around our relationship with time, space and one another. His work often hints at the tragicomic absurdity of our postmodern society, with key themes focusing on the impact of developments in media, automation and technology on the world around us.

TRAGICOMIC ABSURDITY OF OUR POSTMODERN EXI

‘Secret Garden’, Op de Beeck’s tragicomic representation of what the viewer will recognise as a city garden, will be on show during the exhibition Alter Nature: We Can (21.11.201013.03.2011). This artificial garden can be seen as at once poetic and absurd. “ ‘Secret Garden’ is an achrome, life-sized sculptural installation that derives from Op de Beeck’s artistic research in the period 2001–2003, where one of his subjects was the humanization and domestication of nature. These works, expressed in diverse media such as narrative film (‘My brother’s gardens’, 2003), animated film (‘Gardening’ 2001), and sculptures (such as ‘Pond’, 2003), all deal with the awkward way we try to tame and organize the clearing. Both indoors and outdoors, we like to stage our surroundings in order to evoke a safe, little paradise for ourselves.” – Hans op de Beeck

ECSTATIC SURFACE DESIGN pinar & viola Dutch-based independent design duo Pinar & Viola (aka Pinar Demirdag and Viola Renateare) are the creative minds behind Ecstatic Surface Design, a conceptual, hyper-detailed take on visual aesthetics that pushes contemporary imagery to glittering, overloaded extremes. In this exclusive interview, the pair talk political sex scandals, the concept of beauty and why Michael Jackson is the perfect Pinar & Viola pin-up. Pinar & Viola is a design duo based in Amsterdam. They create “hyper detailed surfaces by ‘scanning’ the contemporary visual culture, and ‘printing’ ecstatic surfaces in return. Decoration is a functional and autonomous facet in Pinar&Viola’s practice, existing as a stylistic element and as a subject matter at the same time.”

REIGION & BELIEF The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), informally known as the Klan or the “Hooded Order”, is the name of three distinct past and present far-right organizations in the United States, which have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism. Since the mid-20th century, the KKK has also been anti-communist. The current manifestation is splintered into several chapters with no connection to each other; it is classified as a hate group by the AntiDefamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. It is estimated to have between 5,000 and 8,000 members as of 2012. The first Klan flourished in the Southern United States in the late 1860s, then died out by the early 1870s. Members adopted white costumes: robes, masks, and conical hats, designed to be outlandish and terrifying, and to hide their identities. The second KKK flourished nationwide in the early and mid-1920s, and adopted the same costumes and code words as the first Klan, while introducing cross burnings. The third KKK emerged after World War II and was associated with opposing the Civil Rights Movement and progress among minorities. The second and third incarnations of the Ku Klux Klan made frequent reference to the USA’s “Anglo-Saxon” blood, harking back to 19thcentury nativism and claiming descent from the original 18th-century British colonial revolutionaries

The Church of Scientology is an organization devoted to the practice and the promotion of the Scientology belief system. The Church of Scientology International is the Church of Scientology’s parent organization, and is responsible for the overall management, dissemination and propagation of Scientology. Every Church of Scientology is separately incorporated and has its own local board of directors and executives responsible for its own activities and corporate well-being.The first Scientology church was incorporated in December 1953 in Camden, New Jersey by L. Ron Hubbard.Its international headquarters are located at the Gold Base, located in an unincorporated area of Riverside County, California, the location of which is kept secret from most Scientologists.

The highest authority in the Church of Scientology is in The Church of Scientology International (CSI) and the Religious Technology Center (RTC), whose headquarters are in Los Angeles. CSI “is the mother church and has the mission of propagating the Scientology creed around the world.” RTC’s main function is to “preserve, maintain, and protect the purity of the Scientology technology in accord with Hubbard’s original research and to insure its proper and ethical delivery.” The Scientology Missions International is under CSI and RTC and functions as “the central church to Scientology missions worldwide.” Although in some countries it has attained legal recognition as a religion, the church has been the subject of a number of controversies, and has been described by its critics as both a cult and a commercial enterprise.

— Stamped, color on the edge, reliefpowder, cottonboard. These cards are only research to the real stuff. But I had to try the stamp proces. My learnings; The font used, is too small, and the vector isn’t sharp enough. So a homemade stamp is a no go.

ARCHITECTURE OF TYPOGRAPHY stop talking— start building I wonder why i haven’t called my font Lucas. For typography we were asked to design 2 fonts. A classic font, that effectively can be used, by putting it in dropbox. And an experimental font, that combines audio and type. This is typography on a whole new dimension. Of course, I also tried to tie this assignment to my Bachelorwork, and thought it might be time for some architecture in typography, and no I am not talking about extruding Helvetica. takenobu, my inspiration of type In 1976, Igarashi began to experiment with the alphabet and was able created remarkable shapes and forms.He drew the letters of the alphabet on isometric grids which evolved into threedimensional alphabetic sculptures which Igarashi termed architectural alphabets.

stoptalking— startbuilding After my research and fruitless attempts in Vectorworks, Sketchup and Photoshop, I decided to go back to basics, to the fundamentals of form. Where I can create with my bare hands. I started with some basic forms, based on the fundamental 3D geometric shapes in polystyrene; a cone, a torus and 1/2 of a sphere. With only these forms, I tried to build each letter of the alphabet. — Which was not possible. I had to ad a form or 2. That’s when 2 other tori came in. With these five forms, I was able to create the entire alphabet, abstract versions though.

Trying to bring the architectural font back to its communicative function, by deducing every form to a more recognizable letter. Still, the font keeps its architectural character by creating it with — again — only 5 different flexible forms. We are still building, only we changed our forms back to 2D. Download DODG.

SERIAL MATERIAL silkscreen printing for beginners Bachelorclass, oh bachelorclass, how I fell in love with you! Very happy to expand my printing techniques with the silkscreen printing bachelorclass. Except an overdose of thinner in my blood, a killed liver and a standard arty black manicure, it was a party in the silkscreen atelier. I tried to combine both my studies, and went experimenting with materials and their textures. Immediately i thought of kitch furniture where more materials come together as an endresult. But first; Research. Cause that’s what is all about. — Big ups for Paul! (I bet his heart is even silkscreen printed.)

With all these different textures and patterns, i tried to create a new way of bringing graphic design into (interior)architecture. What if these different textures get combined and lead to a whole different perspective? Can we blur the boundaries between architecture and graphic dsign like this? BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES research in architecture x graphic design For this individual assignment, or maybe we should call it the endproduct of our Bachelorclass, we all chose a different subject, for some extracted from the groupsubject, for some completely new. You have to create an individual concept that you are fascinated about. So work around the clock, shake them brains, and design something somewhat somewho — the medium is free as you can see — that is completely your own thing, that means relevant for you and your target. CAMARADERIE This is going to be a talk about architecture and graphic design. As an interior architect and student in graphic design, I always have been interested in the relationship between these two fields. Frequently though, I was disappointed by the vast misunderstanding of graphic design among architects and the use of graphic design in architecture. Is this all there is when it comes down to the relationship between these two? Drawing from my professional experience and the knowledge of architects and designers around the world, I am trying to create a Research Book that examines the relationship between the two fields. Through case-studies, essays, interviews and site visits, I will try to join all these references about architecturally oriented graphic design together in this book. My goal isn’t to teach a lesson, nor to reflect my own opinion or conclusion. I only want to blur the boundaries between these two disciplines, on the basis of relevant references out of both fields. Although these boundaries have been blurred in the past (Bauhaus, De Stijl,…), I think it is remarkable how these two fields are so separated today. Students Architecture and students Graphic Design should rethink the relationship between those two, and more important should appreciate and interfere more. I encourage a more open discourse and a better relationship between graphic designers and architects nowadays. This research book isn’t a manifesto, nor a visualisation of a Utopia, where both fields come together. You are not about to read a history book, nor it will chronicle recent examples of architecturally-oriented graphic design. This book is a collection of references that are important nowadays, to understand the importance of the relationship between these two disciplines. As a young student, trying to find the common field between architecture and graphic design, I am not completely objective in my choices for these published references. In this book, I pulled out some references that

are important and useful to me, as an Interior Architect and a student Graphic Design. These articles are not thematically categorized in the book, because i think it is important to blur the boundaries, I leave the categorization to the reader. Most of the time it is even impossible to put the references in boxes, and that is what I love and I am trying to say with this book, there are no boundaries when it comes to combining these two fields. It is a two-way relationship, that we should bring to the surface more often. All these references are giving us a new perspective on blurring the traditional boundaries of graphic design and architecture. They give the reader/ viewer the opportunity to delve deeper. The references in this book aren’t the ones we refer to each day when we talk about the relationship between these two fields. This is more; a rich and varied collection of mostly visual references, that sets minds free, opens windows, blurs boundaries, enriches our perspective. — Have a good Read.
