The art and technique of creating footwear with a unique M-Katchi twist.
01 DISCOVERY
This Shoe Had Prada Beat by 5,500 Years
The perfectly preserved 5,500-year-old shoe that was discovered in a cave in Armenia.
P erfectly preserved
under layers of sheep dung (who needs cedar closets?), the shoe, made of cowhide and tanned with oil from a plant or vegetable, is about 5,500 years old, older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, scientists say.
Leather laces crisscross through numerous leather eyelets, and it was worn on the right foot; there is no word on the left shoe.
While the shoe more closely resembles an L. L.Bean-type soft-soled walking shoe than anything by Jimmy Choo, “these were probably quite expensive shoes, made of leather, very high quality, said one of the lead scientists, Gregory Areshian, of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

‘Twist’ THE FAMILIAR
THE SHOE DESIGNS ARE HARD-EDGED BUT VERY SOFT AT THE SAME TIME — I LIKE TO TWIST THE FAMILIAR.

RECOGNIZED weave Overshot weave coverlets were made with a plain woven undyed cotton warp and weft and repeating geometric patterns made with a supplementary dyed woolen weft. Made on a simple four-harness loom.

“I THINK WE HAVE AN AMBIVALENT
RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS ELEMENT IN FASHION. ON THE ONE HAND, THERE’S SOMETHING REALLY HORRIBLE ABOUT THIS TENSION OF HAVING TO DO SOMETHING, BUT ON THE OTHER
HAND THERE’S SOMETHING VERY STIMULATING ABOUT IT,
KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE TO GO ON, YOU HAVE TO CREATE. THERE WAS THIS AMBITION AND CONVICTION THAT WE WANTED TO WORK AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE.”
14 UNIQUE
Did someone say THE PERFECT FIT? Or try this at-home test: Wet your foot, then step on a paper bag. What shape do you see?
“HOLES FOR VENTILATION AND WATER DRAINAGE, AND VERY LITTLE BULK (A STUDY FOUND THAT RUNNERS IN LIGHTER KICKS DIDN’T TIRE AS QUICKLY).”
You may underpronate (land on the outside of your feet), which can cause too much shock to travel up your legs. Look for a neutral or cushioned shoe.
You probably have few foot or pronation problems. A neutral shoe is your best bet.
You likely overpronate (your feet turn inward too much). Try neutral or stability shoes.
