From the Editor-in-Chief
Four years ago this month, my friend Katharine and I held, in wonder and amazement, the first issue of Sophisticated Living Columbus. Launching that first issue was not unlike, I would learn, every issue since: the “deadline” approached and passed, while articles were tweaked; ads placed, jockeyed and placed again; and Jason (our graphics pro-extraordinaire) calmly encouraged us to keep filling the dropbox. Miraculously at times, I open my mailbox and am happily surprised to see the finished product. For 24 issues, the end product has been more than worth all of the planning and anxiety, all of the chasing down of artwork, all of the fact-checking. With each issue, our team has made new connections (and strengthened old) to people who are doing amazing things in Columbus. Across 48 months, we have covered iconic central Ohio classics as well as fresh startups, some of whom sadly didn’t make it. And we said goodbye to several friends whose enthusiasm for the magazine and encouragement still keeps me going. In this, the 25th issue of Sophisticated Living Columbus, we hope you ride out the dog days of summer with a relaxing read that includes travel through Rome and Hawaii; timely fashion to carry you through fall; and an assortment of book and home decor recommendations. Locally, the coverage seems a bit woman-centric, though purely by chance. Since we launched, our team has been in talks with the folks at Lindey’s about an article...always seeking just the right time to feature the Columbus classic. After the tragic loss of the beloved matriarch, Sue Doody, earlier this year, and considering that a meal on the Lindey’s patio should be a part of everyone’s summer, this issue seemed like the perfect fit. Calling on ice cream maven Jeni Britton Bauer for our popular 10 Things feature was a natural summer-fit, as was our home story - taking you behind-the-scenes at the family compound of a legendary Columbus socialite, Nancy Casto Benson. Anniversaries can be happy or sad, depending upon what the date marks - and I, like you, have my fair share of both. I am grateful to every reader, advertiser, contributor, and cheerleader who has helped to make July the happiest of anniversary months for me. Warmly,
Amelia Editor in Chief ajeffers@slmag.net

DON’T MISS
17TH ANNUAL A&F CHALLENGE Written by Amelia Jeffers On September 7, more than 4,000 people will descend upon the picturesque New Albany campus of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (A&F Co.) for The A&F Challenge, an annual camp-inspired festival that benefits SeriousFun Children’s Network. Founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, SeriousFun is a global community of brick-and-mortar camps and pop-up programs that allow children with serious illnesses the opportunity to experience the magic of camp—always free of charge. The network includes Flying Horse Farms in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, located approximately 30 miles from the A&F Co. home office. The proximity has fostered a close relationship between the two, with more than 15,000 hours of volunteer work logged by A&F Co. associates with Flying Horse Farms since its inception; and a groundswell of associate support that led to an incredible $15 million, five-year commitment to the SeriousFun Network. “The A&F Challenge is an amazing event that raises funding and awareness for the important work done by SeriousFun Children’s Network. The camp-inspired event truly is for everybody and is a great night filled with wonderful music, food and fun,” said Fran Horowitz, CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch Co. “Paul Newman founded this network of camps because he believed that children with serious illnesses should get the chance to just be kids. We wholeheartedly agree. And we hope to see even more people on our campus this September so 12 slmag.net
that together, we can give thousands of kids the magical, lifechanging experience of summer camp.” Since 2001, The A&F Challenge has raised more than $16 million dollars for nonprofit organizations, with 2017 numbers topping $3 million alone. This year’s event features international musical artists Fitz and the Tantrums, Judah & the Lion, Betty Who and Van William headlining on the main stage with several regional and Central Ohio musicians on an acoustic stage. The 5K race is expected to draw 800 runners, and attendees can look forward to plenty of camp-inspired activities for kids including archery, ziplining, tie-dying, and a bounce house; while adults may sample signature cocktails and Kindred beers on tap. An array of food trucks and dining options are available. The A&F Challenge is 5 to 11 p.m. on September 7 at the A&F Co. home office, 6301 Fitch Path, New Albany. While general admission tickets include the 5K, music, food, drinks and activities and cost only $75 for adults and $25 for children, participants are invited to fundraise beyond their ticket price to raise additional money for SeriousFun. VIP packages are also available; starting at $250, VIP tickets include exclusive access to a pre-party (complete with live music, food, drinks and swag) at A&F's home office on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6-8 p.m. , as well as an upgraded experience at The Challenge, including open bar, VIP parking and premium stage viewing. ART IN BLOOM 2018
The Beaux Arts Auxiliary of the Columbus Museum of Art presented Art in Bloom, a beautiful and fragrant weekend at CMA, from April 26 through April 29, 2018. Art in Bloom showcases galleries brought to life through imaginative floral designs paired with works from the CMA collection. The weekend included five floral- and art-related events: Fashion in Bloom, an evening of floral-inspired couture; Secret Garden Preview, an opportunity to meet the floral designers; Symphony with Monet, an afternoon inspired by Monet’s garden, including a curator talk and performance from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra; The Family Potting Shed, with flower pot-decorating fun for all ages; and Chihuly Community Bloom & Build, a collaborative workshop in which participants created a large-scale group installation inspired by the art of Dale Chihuly. Proceeds from Art in Bloom and related events support creative programs and learning experiences for children at CMA.

The New Albany Community Foundation hosted the final lecture of the fifth season of its Jefferson Series with Elizabeth Vargas, co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20 with David Muir and author of Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction. Vargas was interviewed by WSYX anchor, Stacia Naquin. Vargas discussed her professional journey as well as her personal struggles with anxiety from a very young age to her addiction to alcohol as an adult. Earlier in the day, Vargas addressed students from several different high schools across central Ohio. To date, nearly 12,000 area students have had the unique opportunity to interact with some of the country’s most influential thought leaders, including Condoleezza Rice, David McCullough, Doris Kearns Goodwin, dr. Paul Farmer, Peggy Noonan, General David Patraeus, Chris Matthews and many more. Her appearance was made with the support from the Donna & Nick Akins Fund, Karen & Irving Dennis Family Fund, Christine & Jeffrey Rodek Fund, Lynne & Steve Smith Family Fund, Leslie H. Wexner Jefferson Series Fund, Abercrombie & Fitch, Conway Charitable Lead Annuity Trust, Beatrice Wolper, Trustee, anonymous, Turner Construction, AT&T, Mount Carmel Health System, Bob-Boyd Lincoln of Columbus, and Lynne and Martyn Redgrave. The Jefferson Series, now widely recognized as one of the premier lecture series in America, will announce its 2018-19 season in June. The series is in keeping with The New Albany Community Foundation’s mission to promote lifelong learning, to provide a platform for the open exchange of ideas and community dialogue.

Hotel Hassler occupies a prime piece of Roman real estate at the top of the Spanish Steps and next to the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti.
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE ROME Hotel Hassler is an old friend in the Eternal City Written by Bridget Williams Look deeper. See beyond the handsomely attired doorman, the marble floors polished to a mirror-shine, the antique tapestries, the fine silk drapery, the monogrammed china, and the other accoutrements of a five-star hotel, to find what really makes Hotel Hassler sparkle: Roberto E. Wirth, a fifth-generation hotelier and owner/General Manager of this iconic property, which is enviably located at the terminus of Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps. Wirth’s quiet, welcoming, and gracious presence is palpable throughout every inch of the property, which opened in 1893 and is
a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. “Rome has my heart,” said Wirth, who championed having the area around the Spanish Steps designated as a pedestrian-only zone. Born deaf, Wirth has never used his disability as a crutch, rather he has exhibited extreme resilience in the face of adversity, which has enabled him to become one of Europe’s top hoteliers, as well as a preeminent advocate for improving the lives of deaf and deaf-blind children throughout Italy. night, each of the 79 rooms and 13 suites in Hotel Hassler are unique in their design, but share a common usage of original art, antiques, treasures such as French crystal, and the most up-to-date in-room technology. Stepping inside the vestibule of my room (no. 723), I was greeted by my reflection presented in a six-foot-tall Venetian mirror surmounting a marquetry console with ormolu trim. A pair of velvet bergères with nailhead trim were positioned at the rise to a sitting room with access to a small balcony overlooking Rome’s rooftops, a Jenga-like configuration of architecture spanning several centuries. A pair of crimson crystal bedside lamps provided a dramatic pop of color in the otherwise black-and-white scheme. Beautifully perfumed “Amorvero” toiletries, created by Wirth specifically for the property, adorned the vanity in the American-sized bathroom. A trio of recently refurbished Executive Suites are quite lavish. The Villa Medici Suite boasts a terrace large enough to suit an emperor, while the dining room of the Hassler Penthouse Suite is outfitted with bone china designed specifically for this suite. Also recently renovated is the Hassler’s Michelin-starred restaurant Imàgo, which marked its 10th anniversary in 2017. The plethora of windows in the 6th floor space puts all of Rome’s 34 slmag.net
splendors at your feet, while exotic spices culled from near and far puts the world on your plate. A native of Naples, Executive Chef Francesco Apreda offers diners two distinct culinary experiences under the Imàgo umbrella: one focused on traditional Italian specialties, and the other more globally influenced, with an emphasis on Japanese and Indian cuisines. Imàgo’s polenta bread is award-winning, and equally laudable is their take on the classic cacio e pepe. Made with risotto and white sesame, the wonderful richness of the creamy risotto is a perfect foil to the bite of the pepper. While it seems easy on paper, Wirth remarked that not many chefs can perfect the dish. “With so few ingredients, proper preparation is supreme,” he explained. Thoughtfully preserved in all its 1940s glam is the cozy, wood paneled Hassler Bar, reserved for guests and locals in-the-know. Famous imbibers have included Audrey Hepburn, George Clooney, and Princess Diana. Mr. Wirth recounted that the People’s Princess told him the Hassler Bellini was the best she’d ever tasted. During my stay, I developed a particular penchant for the unique flavor of Blavod black vodka in the Black Hassler martini as well as their Summer in Palm Court cocktail, a beguiling and refreshing blend of gin, limoncello, St. Germain, lime and soda.

Reflecting Wirth’s unwavering commitment to excellence in all areas of the guest experience, there is a calculated thoughtfulness to the service. One afternoon I left my sunglasses on the entry table in my room, and when I returned they were polished to a shine with a signature Hassler cleaning cloth neatly folded alongside. A cold water and a fresh towel always magically appeared within reach at the apropos moment when I visited the 3rd floor fitness studio within the Amorvero SPA. A lovely terrace can be accessed through the fitness room, and the view will take your breath away if your workout hasn’t already. The Hassler’s location makes it the ideal spot for both strategic sightseeing and agenda-less ambling. On one morning, just after the dawn of a new day had broken above the ancient rooftops, I stood on the hotel’s seventh floor terrace, which is reserved exclusively for guests, and observed the puffs of steam curling up from the surrounding chimney tops, signaling that while the calendar pointed to spring, Mother Nature was still 36 slmag.net
rendezvousing with Old Man Winter. Within minutes, I was standing at the top of the Spanish Steps, the travertine still wet with dew and wonderfully void of the crowds that would soon be arriving en masse. My companions on that early morning included a lonely laborer, tasked with cleaning up the previous day’s mess, and a pair of young Eastern European girls, giggling as they shared a split of champagne and a sandwich for their unconventional breakfast. It is a wonderful thing to feel like you have the Eternal City all to yourself, even if just for a fleeting moment. Taking full advantage of this window of opportunity, I quickly moved on to a lap of the exquisite nearby Borghese Gardens, already bustling with fellow early rising walkers and joggers, followed by quick stops at both the Trevi Fountain and the amazing Pantheon, making it back to the Hotel Hassler in time for breakfast service in the elegant Hassler Bistro at Palm Court. sl For more information and reservations visit hotelhasslerroma.com.
The Roman Forum
We asked Mr. Wirth to recommend some of his favorite spots in Rome, and added a few of our own that we uncovered while exploring the area around Hotel Hassler: Antico Café Greco (Via dei Condotti; anticocaffegreco.eu) – Opened in 1760, it is Rome’s oldest coffee bar. Mr. Wirth said his grandfather brought Buffalo Bill to this iconic spot, whose wonderful atmosphere and outstanding espresso endure. The Gardens of Palazzo Colonna (galleriacolonna.it/en) – Located in the heart of Rome, the gardens, first planted in the early 1700s, are open to the public on Saturday mornings. Campo de’ Fiori (fornocampodefiori.com) – Since 1869, a daily market has been held at this square, which was once the site of public executions. At its center is a statue of philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burnt alive for heresy related to his cosmological theories. The bianco pizza at Forno Campo de’ Fiori is considered among the best in Rome. Cul-De-Sac (Piazza di Pasquino, 73) – Located near Piazza Navona, this wine bar is one of the city’s oldest. Come early (or late) to snag one of the coveted outdoor tables.
Babette (babetteristorante.it) – Run by a pair of sisters who used to work in fashion, Mr. Wirth is a regular at this chic French/Italian hybrid that is located on a quiet street just a short stroll from the Hotel Hassler. Il Palazzetto (ilpalazzettoroma.com) – Built in the 16th century alongside the Spanish Steps, Mr. Wirth purchased the five-story building in 1999 and spent three years renovating it into a fourroom boutique hotel and event space with a hugely popular rooftop wine and cocktail bar. Keats-Shelley Memorial House and Babington’s Tea Room (keats-shelley-house.org; babingtons.com) – Located opposite one another at the foot of the Spanish Steps. The former is a museum dedicated to English Romantic poets, while inside the latter, which opened in 1893, there is a worn but endearing feeling of quirky English eclecticism. Pipero Roma (piperoroma.it/en/) – After ogling the architecture of Santa Maria in Vallicella, constructed in the late 1500s, head across the Piazza della Chiesa Nuova to this Michelin-starred restaurant, operated by sommelier Alessandro Pipero.
Da Felice (feliceatestaccio.it/en) – Located in Testaccio, it’s regarded as the old-school favorite for cacio e pepe, tossed up tableside.
Ruscioli (salumeriaroscioli.com) – A deli, restaurant and wine bar in one. Not for the indecisive, with 300 types of cheese and 2,800 wine labels available.
Emma (emmapizzaria.com) – A popular pizzeria in the Campo de Fiori area, the recipe for the crust was developed in collaboration with acclaimed baker Pierluigi Roscioli. The crisp, thin base serves as the perfect backdrop for a host of simple and fresh toppings.
Sora Lella Restaurant (trattoriasoralella.it) – This homey family-operated spot is the only restaurant on Tiber Island that is open year-round. Mr. Wirth is particularly fond of their tagliolini pasta and meatloaf. slmag.net

Curating a Lifestyle: Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It
Written by Amelia Jeffers
Clockwise from top left: This dainty agateware creamer dates to early 1800s England and boasts remarkably detailed paw feet with lions' heads. It commanded an impressive $3,100 at auction. Photo courtesy Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers. Despite a chip to the rim, this Limoge plate from Mary Todd Lincoln's White House dinner service sold for $3,900 at auction more than her entire set cost in 1861. Photo courtesy Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers. Dating to the 18th century, this Famille Rose plate has a bright ruby back and is a fine example of Chinese porcelain. It sold for $3,000 at auction. Photo courtesy Selkirk Auctioneers & Appraisers.
In my work as an antiques and art adviser, appraiser, and auctioneer for over twenty years, I have reviewed individual items and entire collections for thousands of people. Though tastes, economy, and technology have changed during that time, I have consistently seen a trend that does not seem to be shifting anytime soon: no one wants Grandma’s china. While “no one” might be an overstatement, in the race to place your post-its, I’ve seen some pretty interesting things take a higher priority than a beautiful set of vintage china. Le Creuset, a Vitamix, even barware can instigate a heated discussion over who has the fondest memory of Nana whipping up something magical; but, her Haviland Vieux Paris Green service for 12? No one wants to reject it, but no one is running to pack it, either. They look to alleviate feelings of guilt by hauling a place setting or two into a walk-in appraisal event, hoping that we will tell them that it is, in fact, priceless - and that buyers today are clamoring for this precise pattern. Sadly, no one
48 slmag.net
else wants Grandma’s china either, so prices for vintage sets of dishes are woefully low. There is so little demand, that unless the set is super special (read: 19th Century and a high style European maker or Mid-Century Mod), I generally recommend donating to a local charity or selling in a yard sale. I once overheard one of my more cynical colleagues actually suggest using it as shooting targets. Often, in collectors’ minds, this declining interest in china is seen as a global commentary on the desirability of ceramics in general - but, nothing could be further from the truth. As with any other category of art and antiques, sophisticated buyers remain enthusiastic about items that exhibit the magical combination of rarity, aesthetic, and condition. Add an interesting provenance into the mix, and prices can be astronomical. When the extensive pottery and porcelain collection of a late decorator was consigned with me at Garth’s, our team spent days listing and numbering, packing and sorting rows of individual
Clockwise from top left: Majolica is best known for figural porcelains, but these jewel-toned oyster plates offer a pop of summer color and sold for just $531. plates from various patterns by known makers, dessert services, and more. At times, I questioned just how much interest the items would garner. When auction was over, the pottery and porcelain alone topped $200,000. Among his collection was lovely Limoges dinner plate with a deep royal purple and gilt border, a center eagle with shield, and “E Pluribus Unum" waving below. It is tough to admit that in my haste, I overlooked the plate as something significant, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of objects we were handling. Fortunately, a ceramics specialist recognized it as having come from an extensive service ordered by Mary Todd Lincoln for the White House in the spring of 1861, at a total cost of nearly $3,200 (thank goodness for random knowledge of what some might consider useless information!). With proper research, the single plate (with a chipped rim no less!) fetched an impressive $3,900 largely, of course, due to the important historical connection.
Conversely, the collection also included hand painted porcelains whose history and even painter will never be known, but whose value is found in incredible detail and artistry. Though functionally obsolete, these works of art can sell for thousands of dollars when in pristine condition. Other notable ceramics that command impressive prices today include folksy designs like mochaware, early Chinese porcelains, and preppy forms of Majolica. Our Columbus issue includes, in fact, a relaxed lake home filled with luxurious pink, green, and white fabrics a la Lilly Pulitzer, accented by some amazing figural majolica. The head of house these days? Someone who not only placed her post-it on Grandma’s china, but has embraced the spirit of hospitality and grace that is so epitomized by a beautiful piece of yesterday. sl Amelia Jeffers is an nationally-known auctioneer and appraiser who has worked in the fine art, antiques and bespoke collectibles market for over 20 years.

ITALIAN JOB
For the fifth year in a row, a vehicle made in Italy takes top honors at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Written by Andre James “Hollywood on the Lake” was the theme of the 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, held from the 25th to the 27th of May on the grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, and the nearby gardens belonging to the Villa Erba on Italy’s Lake Como. BMW Group Classic has hosted the world’s most exclusive beauty competition for historic motor vehicles in partnership with the storied hotel since 2005. Divided among eight classes, the vehicles chosen for competition were selected based on their enduring impression on the road and also as performers in feature films. “Movie Cars and Bikes,” a special exhibition presented by BMW Group Classic in the Padiglione Centrale of Villa Erba, showcased vehicles that played a leading role in famous screen successes, including the classic Mini driven by Mister Bean and original vehicles from James Bond films and the Mission Impossible series. The event encompassed a closed exhibition and parade at the Villa d’Este on Saturday for participants, media and invited guests, and a second parade open to the public at Villa Erba on Sunday. A jury of experts, led by President Lorenzo Ramaciotti—an Italian car designer who worked for Pininfarina for more than three decades and is now head of design for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles—awarded Best of Show to a 1958 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti, owned by Austrian pharmaceuticals magnate Andreas Mohringer. Besting 50 distinguished automobiles, the front-engined sportscar is the youngest of only four cars of this type ever built. Known as the “wandering Ferrari,” in 1963 the car was bailed out of a U.S. Customs warehouse in New York by a Maryland car dealer for a measly $1,000; after a succession of international owners, Mohringer purchased it 2013 for $21.5 million in a private sale. The car’s 4.0-liter V-12, which delivers close to 400 horsepower, was quite a powerhouse in its time, and it enabled the 335S to become the first car to set an average speed in excess of 124mph in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1957. Albert Spiess of Switzerland picked up two Best of Show awards as voted by the public, for his 1968 Alfa Romeo 33/2 Stradale Coupé Scaglietti. Just 18 examples of the mid-engined sports car were built between 1967-1969, and not all made it into private ownership. The “Stradale” designation is often used by Italian manufacturers to indicate the vehicle is a street-legal version of a racing car; in this case it is based on the Tipo 33 sports prototype. sl For a complete list of winners, visit concorsodeleganzavilladeste.com.

Left to right: To commemorate their appointment as the Official Partner, Official Watch Partner and Official Connected Watch Partner of Aston Martin and Aston Martin Racing, TAG Heuer presented two special editions honoring the British luxury brand at the International Geneva Motor Show this past March. Shown is the 43mm Formula 1 Aston Martin Racing Quartz Chronograph with notched steel bezel and an aluminum ring with a tachymeter scale. The indexes, seconds hand and Aston Martin's winged logo all sport Aston Martin Racing's specific shade of lime. The movement is accurate to a tenth of a second and is displayed on the small counter at 6 o'clock. ($1,550; tagheuer.com). Inspired by a classic Minerva Rally Timer stopwatch from the 1930s, MontBlanc's limited-edition TimeWalker can be used as a wristwatch, pocket watch or dashboard clock. The chronograph’s 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock is vertically aligned with the small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. PARADISE FOUND Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i Written by Caylee Matthews It might be as near as the neighbor’s house, or far away on a remote beach, but in either case, nearly everyone among us has spied a property they covet and thought someday. In the case of Larry Ellison, co-founder and former CEO of Oracle Corporation, that someday moment came while flying over the island of Lāna‘i, and in 2012 he made headlines by purchasing 98% of the 140-square mile island, Hawaii’s sixth-largest by acreage. The reported $300-million sales price was a far cry from the paltry $1.1-million James Drummond Dole paid in 1922 for the same chunk of dirt to create a pineapple plantation, now defunct, that has resulted in Lāna‘i still being known as The Pineapple Island. Enviable as one may be of Ellison’s acquisition, there is an upside: we can all partake in the amenities of the paradisiacal playground he has created on the sloping hillsides that tumble to the shores of Hulopo‘e Bay by checking into the Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i, a luxurious retreat of unparalleled beauty with a dizzying array of amenities.

I’d been awake for more than 24 hours by the time I made it to the resort under the cover of darkness; a blur of bright colors and perfumed blooms my only fuzzy recollections of being escorted to my room. Waking just before sunrise, I finally had the chance to survey my surroundings, outfitted in a style I can best describe as tech-meets-tradition, with an abundance of teak, zebra and mahogany woods, and a muted, monochromatic color scheme that felt both contemporary and calming. Using the control panel to open the drapery— high-tech bells and whistles such as a 75” platinum bezel LED television, an in-room iPad Air, and fully integrated and intuitive lighting, temperature, service and privacy controls are a given considering the ownership—I was greeted with a plethora of fragrant gardenia and hibiscus framing my view of an emerald green fairway on the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed Manele Golf Course, which ambles along lava outcroppings on a ridge above the ocean. A few swigs of KonaRed Energy from the complementary refreshment
center, followed by a shower using the resort’s exclusive Āina bath amenities, which incorporate kukui nut oil grown on nearby Alberta’s Farm, and I was ready to seize the day. The AAA Five Diamond Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i is comprised of 213 guest rooms and suites, each averaging an impressive 700-square-feet. Found in both public and private spaces is original art culled from Polynesia, Micronesia and Hawaii. The open corridors on each of the floors meander through lush vegetation with seating areas and composed vignettes at the stairwells and elevator banks. At the ground level are water features, koi ponds and tropical birds; don’t be alarmed if one of the latter says “hello there” as you amble by. If you’re lucky, you’ll encounter Bruno Amby, a Lāna‘i elder and local legend who serves as the resort’s avian expert, caring for the rescued tropical birds as part of a partnership with the Peninsula Humane Society. Each day the resort offers a full schedule of activities, both on property and off, allowing vacationers to assemble an
itinerary as packed or lax as they choose. On my first morning, a band of pink was just becoming discernible on the horizon as I made my way to the lobby, where I spied a group headed off for what I thought was morning yoga on the beach, but to my great delight it was a hike to “Sweetheart Rock,” one of Lāna‘i’s most recognizable landmarks. Breaking off from the pack, I made my way to the top of a lava rock outcropping in time to watch one of the most jawdropping sunrises I’ve ever been privy to. I was so enraptured by the spectacle that I didn’t realize that in my haste to claim a prime position on the rock, my legs were dangling nearly 100feet above the shore break, something my fear of heights would never let me do under normal circumstances. Once the sun was up and the spell broken, I carefully scooted back from the edge, still awestruck from what I’d just witnessed. Taking the short hike is an experience I can’t recommend highly enough at least once during your stay.

dining is NOBU LĀNA‘I, which showcases the new-style Japanese cuisine made famous by Chef Matsuhisa, and infuses it with local creations under the direction of Executive Chef Christopher "Tex" Texeira, who worked in the kitchen at Nobu Waikiki before heading to Lāna‘i to help open the resort’s restaurant in 2012. Named to reflect the island’s 140-square-mile radius (and the ideal temperature of a medium steak), ONE FORTY is the resort’s main dining room, serving breakfast and dinner in its ocean-view space. A highlight of my meal was a perfectly cooked bone-in ribeye accentuated with maple-braised chestnuts, applesmoked bacon, bone marrow, caramelized Maui onions and roasted mushrooms. It was paired with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon produced and bottled exclusively for the resort by Buccella in Napa Valley. ONE FORTY’s breakfast buffet is extensive. Just 3,200 people live on Lāna‘i, most of them clustered in the vicinity of quaint Lāna‘i City, not even a one stoplight town. On-site Jeep rentals through the resort’s Adventure Desk makes it easy to go exploring, with Garden of the Gods being a top destination, as it is only accessible by 4WD. Not a garden in the typical sense, but rather a vast expanse of red lava formations on the northern side of the island, Hawaiian legend says that the curious arrangements were created by the gods who dropped them to earth while tending to their own celestial plots. 64 slmag.net

ELM ISLAND MUSE Written by Amelia Jeffers / Photography by James Henthorn
Hearing the news of the family lake house going up for sale after the death of the grandmother she adored, Lisa Benson Meuse approached her husband, Peter about buying it. Reminiscing about their own childhoods spent at the private island on Buckeye Lake, and considering the possibility of their children missing the experience, the pair took the plunge. Beyond the sheer magnitude of maintaining and restoring a 100+ year old property, Lisa and Peter have undertaken the seemingly impossible challenge of carrying on the legacy of a larger than life character. To those who knew her well, Nancy Casto Benson was a walking dichotomy. She had a house full of recipe books, but couldn’t boil water. Her spirit of adventure ran deep, but she never left her room in the morning without being fully “made up.” She insisted on maintaining a proper decorum, but confessed to her grandchildren that it was “fun to cuss sometimes.” When 66 slmag.net
Nancy’s doctors recommended that she needed to get regular exercise, she argued that tennis shoes were uncomfortable. Relenting, she developed a routine that involved walking laps in the pool - in her high heels. An early portrait of “Miss Nancy,” painted in 1929 by renowned impressionist Alice Schille depicts the sweet and beautiful daughter of accomplished real estate developer, Don Casto, Sr. A smart and sassy debutante, Nancy attended Columbus School for Girls and The Ohio State University where she dated the love of her life, Frank Benson, Jr. The high profile pair raised their children and entertained friends and family between houses in Bexley, Florida, Michigan, and her beloved family compound at Buckeye Lake jokingly referred to as “Cast-o-Way Island” (formally recorded as “Elm Island”) until Frank’s tragic death at the young age of 68 from a rare genetic disorder known as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)*.

Spare window treatments and an open spiral staircase keep the space bright and open.
To the uninitiated, Buckeye Lake may seem an unlikely getaway for a sophisticated and worldly socialite, but for old-school Columbus, a private island on Buckeye Lake was the perfect escape from hectic work and personal commitments. At the height of its popularity, the famed amusement park at the lake was rumored to have caught the interest of Walt Disney - though most people believe that to be the ambitious and wishful thinking of a longtime resident who hoped the news would increase interest and property values. Over the years, the lake has seen its fair share of popularity and indifference, while influential families like the Wolfes and Schottensteins maintained their compounds and interests in the area. Widely-publicized issues related to the structural integrity of the dam have had a silver lining, leading to the development of a 68 slmag.net
private-public alliance and development of Buckeye Lake 2030, an organization committed to charting and fulfilling a vision to recreate and surpass the glory days once known to longtime residents. Taking over management of the family retreat, Nancy hired her close friend who had helped with the Bensons’ other homes, New York designer and “Prince of Chintz, Mario Buatta. Buatta was tasked with creating a welcoming, relaxed, but sophisticated interior, reminiscent of New England coastal communities. The interiors of the home remain largely unchanged today, speaking to the effortless style created by the dynamic duo. The vibe is definitely chic and relaxed, with nine comfortable bedrooms and ample kitchen prep for the large parties the Casto-Benson-Meuse clans have come to love. Outside, cedar shake siding takes a backseat to cheery window boxes, a plethora of plantings, and a focus on recreation. A shuffleboard court overlooks Buckeye Lake winery across the water, while neat little recliners line up alongside the dock leading to Cranberry Bog. The boathouse sits quietly at one end of the home, with the lively pool and outside bar anchoring the other. In all, the property begs for lingering after a long weekend with friends, and is well-suited to the younger Meuses’
enthuasiasms, including father-daughter camping weekends with the Indian Princesses. Visiting with Lisa and Peter on Elm Island one breezy summer morning, we pored over old family albums as Lisa regaled us with fabulous stories of Nancy riding a camel in heels and pushing aside the barrier at the Parthenon to have a seat on the steps. With their muse in front of us, surrounded by several lifetimes of memories, I asked them to describe their hopes and dreams for the property. Lisa looked wistfully at a nearby photo of her grandmother and responded, “I just want it to be a place where people put their feet up and relax. Though I never met her, I have the sense that somewhere Nancy sits, looking over her family legacy with signature red lips curved into a most satisfied smile. slmag.net

*Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive and lethal lung disorder afflicting an estimated 5 million people worldwide. Nearly 25 years after the death of her grandfather, Lisa’s father, Frank Benson, III is now battling the debilitating illness. IPF primarily affects people over 60, and as such, research into it has historically lagged that of other diseases such as cancer and HIV, which affect younger patients. But now there is reason for optimism. The first effective treatments to slow the disease’s progression were approved by the FDA about four years ago, and recent developments 72 slmag.net

SUMMER SOPHISTICATION AT LINDEY’S Written by Amelia Jeffers / Photography by James Henthorn Stepping onto the patio at Lindey’s in June, I was not only embarrassed to admit that after living in Columbus for 22 years, it was my first visit, but surprised that while I expected near-total seclusion on a Thursday midafternoon, it was hopping. Amidst a stunning landscape of living walls, lush hanging baskets, fountains, umbrellas, and historic bricks sits a scene straight from old New York; and as if reading my mind, Sinatra’s sultry vocals streaming from the speakers completed the swanky ambiance. I was not surprised, just a week or so later, to read that OpenTable has named the patio to the list of the Top 100 Outdoor Restaurants in America. Seating is first-come, first-served, and for Saturday and Sunday brunch, the line can extend well down the street. With a season that stretches from April to October, it is an experience not to be missed. When Sophisticated Living Columbus launched four years ago, the decision to feature another German Village mainstay, Pistacia Vera, over Lindey’s was made based on the timeliness of the cafe’s anniversary. Talks with the team at Lindey’s and their beloved matriarch, Sue Doody continued on and off, as we knew the Columbus landmark simply had to be covered and covered well. Timing considerations included a bar renovation and Sue’s travel; and then, sadly, things got a bit quiet as the venerated head of one of the most popular white table restaurants in the history of the city fought and lost a valiant battle with cancer earlier this year.

The Bruschetta at Lindey's tastes like summer
While paying homage to the legacy of Sue Doody seems daunting in print, her seasoned team at Lindey’s makes their job of tending it in the flesh seem effortless. The experienced lineup defies an industry where longevity is counted in years not decades and a city where Executive Chef opportunities keep Sous Chefs from gaining much tenure at all. But at Lindey’s? From Sous Chefs to Chef de Cuisine, all have worn the Executive Chef hat at respected locations in Central Ohio. Years of service is a point of pride throughout the staff at Lindey’s, led by 16-year veteran Managing Partner, Todd Cumbow. With no professional training, Sue Doody was as unlikely a restaurant owner as anyone. Depicted as a “den mother” by early reporters who may have been scratching their heads at the ambitions of a divorced mother of four whose experience included four years as a Columbus public school teacher. Having operated a small catering business and conducted cooking classes in her home, Sue often joked with son, Rick, about opening a restaurant. When the perfect building in German Village was offered for sale, the Doodys took the chance and opened Lindey’s in 1981, and the rest, as they say, is history. Under Sue’s watchful eye and with her passion for people and genuine hospitality, Lindey’s has become an unmatched food experience in Columbus with regulars numbering in the thousands.

Service at Lindey’s is legendary, and the menu is rock solid. While cocktails and a few dishes are changed up seasonally, the timeless sophistication and class of the historic building correlates directly to a confidence created when one rests on a well-built foundation. Several recipes harken back to the earliest days and are Sue’s original creations, a testament to her focus on excellence in everything she did. Our patio lunch was guided by Executive Events Manager Grant Cassidy and Executive Chef Brett Fife. The pair woke up our palate with a Bruschetta that simply tastes like summer: toasted ciabatta with walnut-basil pesto, the freshest tomatoes, and a delicate but rich straciatella (lightly enhanced with a bit of evoo, parmesan, and fresh herbs). This could be my official 2018 summer diet, paired with the Chopped Salad, a satisfying plate of arugula, baby kale, and cabbage dressed with a light and subtly sweet pear thyme vinaigrette, apples, grilled red onion, bacon, housemade candied pecans, and goat cheese. While an allergy kept me from enjoying it, Editorial Assistant Betsy Ross raved about the melt-in-your-mouth fried Calamari & Shrimp appetizer with finely sliced lemon and julienned peppadew peppers, all crispy golden brown with remoulade and cocktail sauce; while I focused on the Carpaccio, a stunning and colorful plate full of texture and flavor with marinated portobello and a light salad of arugula, fennel, parmesan reggiano, and chipotle aioli. One of my favorite dishes is always a good Tuna Nicoise, and Lindey’s delivers with a classic option. It was tempting to stick to lighter, warm-weather fare, but Betsy endeavored to sample a heartier dish, so we went with the Filet encrusted with gorgonzola, which was nothing short of amazing. A lighter 4 ounce version is available (sans crust) and is served with buttermilk chive mashed potatoes, asparagus, and bernaise, topped with crispy onion straws.

Lindey's menu doesn't vary much seasonally, for good reason
Among the summer cocktail options, the Frosé is refreshing blend of frozen wine, citrus vodka, and fresh fruit puree. An interesting and pleasant aftertaste marks the unusual Smoky Strawberry Mezcarita; and the spicy, aromatic Three Dots and a Dash brings an island vibe. Tasting cocktails for a story can be dangerous, so bartenders are warned that we are likely to have just a sip of each - but, drinks like the Watermelon Mule (Watershed Vodka, fruit puree, lime juice, and ginger beer) definitely have a way of testing that policy. Seasonal and classic cocktails notwithstanding, the overarching goal of the beverage and wine program is consistent with Lindey’s guiding principle of bringing high value and a memorable experience with wines that way over-deliver for the price. The wine list is somewhat eclectic, but not off the wall from a wine nerd perspective. Happy Hour specials (4:30p - 6:30p daily) are worth noting: half off beer, wine, and specialty cocktails as well as a discounted bar menu. While summer is definitely a season worth noting, Lindey’s makes good use of the patio in fall and winter months with annual events like Village Lights in December when 13,000 white lights adorn the space and hot cocktails and cookies are served up with live music. Of course, interior Lindey’s is one of the finest white tablecloth options in the state, so don’t mind my latest obsession with the outdoors. THE SCOTTS MIRACLE-GRO FOUNDATION CHILDREN’S GARDEN AT FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY Written by Amelia Jeffers / Photos courtesy Franklin Park Conservatory
For my birthday this year, two dear friends asked how I would like to spend the day. Having heard rave reviews, I asked if they would join me in visiting the much-anticipated and newly opened Children’s Garden at Franklin Park Conservatory. Though the early June Saturday was sweltering, they were game. Actually, Katharine had already experienced the creative installation with her sweet preschooler, Phillip, whose wonder and delight over the unique, interactive exhibits is exactly the response for which the numerous donors and sponsors must have hoped. The two-acre immersive experience, the largest horticulture project ever undertaken by the Conservatory, was designed to connect children of all ages with nature. Given that the average American spends 93 percent their life indoors, making spaces that connect people with nature seems more important than ever. Studies show a healthy dose of the outdoors reduces stress, increases physical activity and has long-term benefits to a person’s wellbeing, especially children. In addition to health benefits, time spent outdoors also improves social relationships and builds self-confidence. Just a handful of the unique experiences offered in the Children’s Garden: • Getting a Bird’s Eye View: Atop a canopy walk 13 feet in the air, children can locate Ohio’s state amphibian, the spotted salamander, in the garden below; pretend to be a cardinal in (one of my favorite displays) the human-sized bird nest; or take in the sights and sounds of nature from the hammock perched high up in the treetops. 82 slmag.net
• Sparking Creativity Through Art: Nine different art installations, created by local and regional artists, including the Sunrise Celebration Arch, which welcomes guests as they enter the garden. It is comprised of 56 individual stained glass pieces that depict sunrise to sunset. Embedded in each piece of stained glass are Swarovski crystals that, on sunny days, cast rainbows on the ground. In the Nature Art Studio children are encouraged to become artists by creating their own art using sticks, rocks, leaves and other natural materials. • Hands-On Gardening: In addition to visually experiencing nature’s beauty, children can actually plant a garden in raised flower beds and learn how to tend to it. At harvest time, kids can pick the produce and even learn how to prepare the food to eat. • Exploring Nature: Kids and parents can take off their shoes and walk through the 150- foot Sandstone Creek while locating different animal tracks and fossils embedded in the walls of the Sandstone Bluff - a particularly popular feature on a hot summer day. Also not-to-be-missed for the young (or young at heart) is the Whisper Garden (an assemblage of precious fairy houses) and the Playhouse Garden, with mud hut and puppet theater. Check the Conservatory website for information about a wide array of educational offerings, from storytime to The Turtle Lady and weekly themed drop-in and self-guided nature activities. Why a Second Opinion... ...Choosing an orthodontist is an important decision. It results in a well-informed parent or adult patient capable of making a better educated choice. Many patients seeking significant medical or dental care are advised and aware of the importance of obtaining a second opinion. The basis for a second opinion is primarily to advise in the proposed treatment plan and establish the confidence, qualifications, and experience of the orthodontist. Our goal is to help provide accurate and reliable communication about the value of seeing a “Board Certified” Orthodontist, understanding alternative orthodontic treatment options, a review of appropriate timing of treatment and an evidence based explanation of benefits/risks of various braces and appliances to satisfy all of your child and family’s orthodontic needs. Second opinions can be signifcantly benefcial.

My Volkswagen GTI. When I need to think, I’ll drive west on Broad Street, get on the country roads, soar around as fast as I can through London (very few stop signs out there); grab coffee at a little shop; and then head to work with a clear head. 2. My phone. My community lives through it, and I love being able to speak to people around the world, hear their stories, and gather inspiration no matter where I am. 3. Sleep. I need my brain to work efficiently everyday ,or my 10 hour days can easily turn into 14. So, I sleep 8 hours a night and read for one or two before. In summer, I am often in bed while it’s still light out. 4. Art: old, new, all. History is the perspective that someone decided to remember after the fact, and the moment we live in 84 slmag.net
is depicted in the media in a sanitized and unreal way. But art is the window into the other side of that - the real side of the world. From activism to true beauty, art opens my eyes to the world and helps me keep my scrappy, don’t-take-anything-forface-value perspective. 5. Team Jeni’s. Someone said if you want to do epic things, surround yourself with epic people. That’s my team. 6. Block heel pumps. Walk fast, look good. Pound the pavement. 7. New experiences. Tell me when/where. I’ll be there. 8. Old experiences. I’m a tourist of history, reading between the lines to bring it to life in my imagination. It’s not about studying history to become an expert, it’s about going into history for fun, which takes a different type of study and focus. 9. Vision. This is important in every part of my life. I don’t even go to the grocery store without a vision, knowing what I want and how to accomplish it. The world I want to build, the community I want to live in, the company I want to build, the person I want to become. 10. My heart. Sometimes I want to turn it off and then I remind myself that it’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t, then we’d take all the lovely things for granted. Plus feeling history is how I time travel; how I meditate. How I get outside of myself. How I try not just to treat others the way I want to be treated, but the way THEY want to be treated. It takes practice to get outside of yourself and your feelings. But the more you do it, the better and stronger you get. sl
