One of my favorite sayings is “focus on the positive.” Push out those negative thoughts and stay present. Each time I write these letters, I find myself starting with why the coming months are my favorite time of year, regardless of whether the temperatures are in the single or triple digits. If I ever moved away, I’d have to come back for spring to see the trees budding, greenery returning and three of the year’s biggest fundraisers in action: Marygrove’s Bloom, Variety Week and COCAcabana. The other best part of right now? March Madness! I “bled” orange for years at Syracuse University, but my family always stayed loyal to the Duke Blue Devils. Our trips to my sister’s undergraduate choice led to exceptionally “crazy” times at the Cameron Indoor Stadium as the fans say. Despite my claim to fame that Lawrence Moten once stepped on my foot at a party, the Fab Five of the 90’s Duke team won my teenage heart. And years later when #0 took the court, I had such pride for St. Louis and a rising young star. Seeing Jayson Tatum blossom from his days at Chaminade to the NCAA and now the NBA with the Boston Celtics is inspiring as a parent. I’ll never forget years ago, his dad told me he could tell Jayson was going to be a basketball star when he was just four-years-old. One can hope for the best for a child, but to see dreams actually come true is what life is all about. I am honored to be able to introduce you to Jayson’s son, “Deuce,” in this installation of “Sophisticated Littles” (pg. 28). You’ll see he too might have the skills in the Tatum genes! Speaking of sports, flip to the back of the magazine for an inside look at the woman who is part of what could become the first female-led ownership group to have an MLS team. Find out what Carolyn Kindle Betz can’t live without, besides her pledge to bring us a soccer team (pg. 88)! The home in this issue is stunning as we would typically expect from Ken Stückenschneider. He never disappoints. Take a close look at the exquisite mural in the dining room section (pg. 14), hand-painted by the talented Peter Engelsmann. It’s just one of the many treasures added to the estate that includes hand-painted wallpaper and a bespoke rug from Agra, India. As you can tell, I get excited very easily about positive things happening around us! We tried to fit as much as we could in this issue– so much that we are pleased to announce we are working on a double issue for May/June! As a national publication with operations in nine other cities, we all only publish six times a year which is why we are increasing our online storytelling. We want to be able to share more of what we cover. It’s not breaking news, doom and gloom, political pieces or stories that make you feel like you are missing out in life. We focus on lifestyle pieces, inspiring stories, cute kids and pets, philanthropy, cultural arts and homes that are dreamed to life. First on the to-do list? Pull down the ivy! After they purchased this classic Georgian, the new homeowners knew they wanted to transform the 60-year-old house, which had great bones, but dark and dated interior spaces. It would take a dream team of talent to bring their vision to life, but when their builder recommended removing the ivy that enveloped the structure, the husband and wife team truly took matters into their own hands. She remembers, “We cut it down ourselves, and it’s like pulling off glue!” About one year later, the slate-roofed Georgian beauty was ready for her close-up, with just enough neatly trimmed ivy surrounding the perfectly centered front door. Set at the same level as the paved forecourt in the traditional style of an English country house, and accented with a classic lion door knocker,
it’s a welcoming approach to the beautifully redesigned spaces across the threshold. The homeowners chose architect Paul Fendler, of Fendler + Associates, to remake the house for more room, more light, and to better accommodate their lifestyle. They had worked with him on two previous homes, and the wife describes him as their “favorite” architect, saying “He’s just so pleasant, and so friendly, and he works well with everybody. And that’s the kind of architect you want.” Fendler began with a redesign of the west wing, combining a small galley kitchen and eating area to create a stunning new kitchen with garden and front courtyard views. A new breezeway with a separate copper-topped entry connects the kitchen to the garage, a practical convenience seamlessly incorporated into the home’s balanced exterior.

The centerpiece of the all-white kitchen, designed by Keith Gegg, of Gegg Design and Cabinetry, is a fabulous center island that is party-ready, with seating for five, and “hanging-out” room for quite a few more. In addition to garage and garden access, the new kitchen is connected to the entrance with a spacious walkthrough butler’s pantry, configured to include a new powder room. Tucked behind a pocket door, the new powder room features hand-blocked wallpaper by Farrow and Ball. The butler’s pantry is customized with an abundance of glass-front cabinetry, as well as a coffee bar, and also opens to the formal dining room. Ken Stückenschneider, of Stückenschneider Decoration & Design, was chosen to bring the new interiors to life, and he developed a scheme from the Chinese Gracie wallpaper in the entry hall, hand painted with birds, butterflies and flowering vines. “The wallpaper design recalls 18th century chinoiserie— 16 slmag.net
the European and American Colonial interpretation of Asian decorative objects,” he explains. “The elegant naturalism is echoed in the plaster Rococo-style mirror that we freshened up with white flat paint, and then paired with an Art Deco console that relates back to the twisted tree trunks in the wallpaper.” The console table is flanked by two shield-back 18th century English hall chairs from Jules Pass Antiques. In the living room, twin sofas upholstered in “Pandaranda,” a hand-blocked printed linen from Bennison, create an inviting seating area centered around the fireplace. Two sets of French doors lead to a newly enlarged terrace, where removing an encroaching magnolia allowed abundant sunlight to fill the room. Stückenschneider dressed the newly brightened windows with sheer draperies, edged with wool and grosgrain tapes, granting full access to the light.
Well lit by a window, the new powder room is also illuminated by light sconces from New York’s Remains Lighting.
A stunning mural by St. Louis artist Peter Engelsmann takes the formal dining room from beautiful to spectacular. Contemplative herons look poised for flight from the chair rail that is a trompe l’oeil masterstroke, and large pots echo the owner’s front porch pots and lion’s head door knocker. Planning the mural involved considerable research and lengthy discussions between the artist, the client and the designer. “We brought some of the color palette from the living room, but the homeowner did not want the colors to be too tropical,” Stückenschneider says. “The work of 18th-century Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, famous throughout Europe for magnificent palazzo frescoes, inspired the final choices,” he adds. Describing Engelsmann’s artistry, the homeowner says she was fascinated by the process and thrilled with the results. “I really love his work. It was a real collaboration, and the most fun for me
was watching it happen. It took Peter about six weeks, working eight hours a day.” The artist is so meticulous, she explains, that he might spend an entire day painting one tree, only to return the following day and do it over until he’s satisfied. “The mural changes colors depending on the light and the time of day,” she adds. When the sun goes down, dinner parties are illuminated by a cut-glass Waterford chandelier, selected by the homeowner during a trip to Ireland with her dad. The home’s classic architecture incorporates an “enfilade,” where a series of rooms and doorways are formally aligned along a single axis, offering a glimpse into each one. The design was often used in European palaces, Stückenschneider explains, where access through the rooms determined the rank of the visitor. In this house, each room’s color palette complements the next, drawing on the theme and colors of the Gracie wallpaper. slmag.net

Tucked away and private, the master bedroom sitting room is a sanctuary decorated in the soft color palette found throughout the home.
At one end of the enfilade, through two sets of double doors, a serene master suite suggests that it really is possible to sleep on a cloud. Here, the homeowner did not want any patterned fabrics or wall coverings, explaining that she has an all-white bedroom in another home and wanted that same serenity. A richly padded headboard and bespoke loveseat are finished with details inspired by the Ferragamo family’s Hotel Lungarno in Florence. Roomdarkening draperies in a gentle blue open to enjoy a view of the terrace and gardens beyond. Fendler recreated the master suite’s adjoining rooms to give the couple “his and hers” bathrooms, a laundry room, and a private sitting room with a fireplace. While the bathrooms share the same flooring and wallcovering, thoughtful details clearly distinguish “his” from “hers.” This was something of a challenge, the lady of the house admits. “It was interesting trying to find a wallpaper that worked in a masculine and feminine space— something that didn’t have flowers.” Soft grey willow branches work smoothly in both spaces, as does the grey and white tile floor from Waterworks. “And of course, he got the bigger vanity,” she
says with a smile. “But I wanted a place to sit when I put makeup on, and I also wanted to have more windows.” The homeowners, along with Fendler and contractor Dan Compton, of P.J. Prifti, were at first puzzled by the windowless bathroom, because the corresponding exterior wall had two. After determining they had been boarded up in a previous remodel, the windows were restored inside, giving the homeowner the lightwashed bathroom she wanted. For a sublime way to begin or end the day, Fendler created a private sitting room from the existing exercise room, completing the master suite. Stückenschneider chose plush seating pieces upholstered in “China on Oyster,” an 18th century chinoiserie pattern relating once more to the avian theme and muted colors of the entry hall wallpaper. (The homeowner’s love of birds is woven into several rooms of the house, so she is especially delighted when the neighborhood rafter of turkeys—13 total— pay a visit to the garden.) That abundance of ivy? It’s compost. The massive magnolia? Firewood. And every boarded-up window is now opened to the sun— proving there was, indeed, light at the end of the enfilade. sl

Prepare to welcome spring on a perfectly delivered high note in March, when St. Louis welcomes an internationally acclaimed soprano, as well as the brilliant young vocalist who brought Jennifer Hudson to her feet on NBC’s “The Voice.” The excitement continues the second week of April, beginning with a fashion show straight from a New York design house, and concluding with a black-tie gala at the Stifel Theatre. It all begins March 29, when multi-Grammy winner soprano Christine Brewer is the special guest host at the 10th annual Sing for Siteman concert at John Burroughs School. Proceeds from the concert, chaired by Pat Burkhart and Kim Eberlein, benefit the Siteman Cancer Center’s Discovery Fund in support of cancer research projects. Brewer will be joined on stage by four artists from Opera Theatre of Saint Louis: Teresa Castillo, Rehanna Thelwell, Edward Graves, and Robert Mellon, accompanied by pianist Timothy Cheung. Soprano Susannah Biller will also be part of the concert’s 10th anniversary celebration. The Burroughs Performing Arts Center will also welcome back one of its own, Kennedy Holmes, described by singer Blake Shelton as “the greatest artist of all time” after her spectacular performance on “The Voice.” Her special guest appearance will be a first for Sing for Siteman, but the stage is familiar territory to the current Burroughs eighth grader. Presented by Centene Charitable Foundation and hosted by Edward Jones, the evening begins with a cocktail reception, followed by the concert and then an opportunity to meet the artists. “We are forever grateful for the artists who offer their time and talents to make this event possible, the volunteers who help make it happen each year, and of course all of the supporters who come out to enjoy a great concert for an important cause,” says Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, director of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at BarnesJewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. If you need further proof that winter is well and truly banished, look no further than the second week of April, when Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis launches Variety Week, their pillar fundraising campaign to benefit children with physical and developmental disabilities. The highly anticipated events begin with a glamorous fashion show, wrapping up with a can’t-miss-it evening described as “St. Louis’ premier black-tie gala.” The curtain opens with the Runway Lights Fashion Show at Union Station on April 6. The perennial favorite, which includes 24 slmag.net
an elegant gourmet luncheon, has showcased Ralph Lauren, St. John, Carmen Marc Valvo, and other notable names through the years. This year’s runway models will be dressed in the Spring 2019 collection by Lafayette 148, the New York-based fashion house known for sophisticated, clean-lined designs and luxury fabrics. No matter which pieces you decide you must have, you’ll be in stellar company — fans of the groundbreaking brand include Helen Mirren, Glenn Close, Michelle Obama, Drew Barrymore and Oprah Winfrey. Runway Lights will once again be chaired by Thelma Steward, the vice president of Variety’s Board of Directors and a much-loved supporter of the Variety kids. “Thelma is just a beautiful soul,” says Jean Larson Steck, Variety’s director of communications. “She’s so genuine, she really relates to the kids and knows how to reach them.” Although Steward has been an integral part of Variety’s mission for many years, Steck says she sometimes hesitates to speak at events because she’s prone to emotional tears. “That really speaks to her genuineness.” If the Runway Lights Fashion Show whets your appetite for a wardrobe re-do, why not start with a new evening gown for Dinner With the Stars? The glamorous night of dining and entertainment closes out Variety Week on April 13, in the Art Deco splendor of the Stifel Theatre (formerly the Peabody Opera House). Dinner With the Stars will also celebrate Variety’s 2019 Man and Woman of the Year, chosen for their contributions to the St. Louis community. Past years have honored some of the city’s most prominent citizens, including Thelma Steward in 2012, and her husband David Steward, in 2006. This year the charity has chosen media executive Spencer Koch and civic leader Carol Staenberg to be Variety’s 2019 Man and Woman of the Year. For 23 years, Variety Week has all come together under the guidance of chair Marilyn Fox. When her husband Sam (Variety’s 2002 Man of the Year) was US Ambassador to Belgium, the St. Louis native returned to her hometown to continue her leadership role. “She is just a delightful person and they both do so much for the community,” Steck says. And thanks to the generous support of the Centene Charitable Foundation, the Steward Family Foundation, and World Wide Technology, all proceeds from the fundraising events directly benefit Variety. Community development or service trips, both domestic and international, are standard ways to support an organization, further a mission and, as a byproduct, create lasting friendships. Another popular way of supporting an organization while traveling is to bid on a charity auction trip. One local charity is changing the nonprofit-travel paradigm by connecting supporters with executive leadership and the organization’s mission in a different way. These are not trips spent swinging a hammer or providing the helping hands so many organizations require. Nor are

these trips where one writes a check and disconnects from home and the organization. Instead, these are exclusive experiences specifically tailored to connect strategic partners with the work and leadership of an organization. Such trips require many hours of planning and there are risks for an organization to open the kimono, but the value of relationships created through these immersive, experiencerich and relationship-focused trips can not be overstated. COCA recently returned with 32 supporters from a behindthe-scenes trip to New York City. Co-Artistic Directors Antonio and Kirven Douthit-Boyd, Executive Director Kelly Pollock and Director of Advancement Pam Mandelker created an itinerary that started at The Juilliard School. Former COCA teaching artist Alicia Graf Mack, who last year became Juilliard’s first African-American female Director of Dance, hosted a tour of the esteemed Upper West Side school. The group then headed to Broadway for a private event with COCA-alum Joe Grandy before enjoying his newly-produced show “The Prom.”

The group also enjoyed an exclusive experience at the Baryshnikov Arts Center with Mikhail himself, a man considered one of the greatest male ballet performers of all time. “We met over an hour with Baryshnikov,” says Shereen Fischer, Co-VP of Development who cohosted this trip with her husband Michael, Linda and Jesse Hunter and Kim Kuehner. “He spoke with us, talked about what he does and talked about how it coalesces with what COCA does. I had a life-size poster of Baryshnikov on my bedroom door as a child, so that was a very exciting moment for me personally!” From an artist alumni brunch to a private event at The Modern Restaurant at MoMA with St. Louis’ own Danny Meyer, the trip featured one COCA-connected behind-the-scenes experience after another. It would be nearly impossible for the individual traveler to create this sort of itinerary, but the trip wasn’t just about opening must-know-somebody-doors. Each experience paid tribute to the ways COCA impacts artists and how the organization helps artists reach new levels in their professions.

LITTLE INFO Meet Jayson Christopher Tatum, Jr. AKA “Deuce!” While his dad is the NBA superstar from St. Louis who plays for the Boston Celtics, this little guy is quite well known too. The top shot one-year-old is described as smart, adventurous, independent and funny with great social skills. “He walks around the Garden post- game like he owns the place,” says Grandma. “He waves or high fives everyone from security and media to the cheerleaders and ushers.” LITTLE LOOK Deuce is wearing Nike Tech Fleece for this photo. His normal outfit of the day is some sort of Nike jogging suit and either Jordan’s or those adorable Penny Hardaway Foams. With Dad’s debut of Nike’s self-lacing shoe, we’re voting for a “L’il Deuce” version to come out next! Deuce likes to accessorize day and evening wear with a baby golf club. LITTLE LOVES Deuce loves anything basketball. Grandma says, “Like his dad when he was young Deuce has a hoop in every room of the house (bathtub included) in various heights. When he is shooting hoops he wants to clap after every attempt.” When he misses, Dad says, “No no no. No clapping. You missed.” And of course Deuce thinks that’s funny! He attends all of Daddy’s home games and went to the playoff games at home and away last year. “When Jayson is on the road, he enjoys watching and clapping and pointing at the television.” In between practicing baby 3-pointers, Deuce likes to swim and hit the Little Gym. LITTLE LIT Reading is a passion, and Deuce often is enthralled with a few books at a time. His literary recommendations include anything by Dr. Seuss, “God Bless You and Good Night,” “BedTime Prayers” and a custom personalized book called “Jesus Loves Jayson Jr.” LITTLE EXTRA Two full-sized flashy fawn Boxers live with Deuce, you know the kind most humans are afraid of! TORREY PINES Where Chivalry is Alive and Well Written by Cortney Vaughn / Photography provided by The Lodge at Torrey Pines It’s a popular destination from St. Louis: sunny Southern California. And with resorts aplenty running from Orange County down to the Gaslamp District of San Diego, there is one that warrants at least a day trip from wherever you stay. A winding road with a meticulously groomed landscape transfers you from the city lights of San Diego onto the grounds of a secluded, yet grand resort, replete with clinker-brick masonry, straight from the Show Me State. From the moment we arrived at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, our eyes fixated on the radiant stained glass windows, the famous Pinus Torreyana trees, and the type of hospitality that seems to have almost dissolved over time. Happy faces gleamed in the lobby around every turn with both families and couples, cuddled up around fireplaces as if they were in the comfort of their own home. Down a cozy hallway, we were shown our exquisite first floor room, designed with a fireplace at the foot of the bed, perfect to cozy up to when the cool ocean breeze comes at night. With a bathroom fit for a queen and lavender permeating the air, the best part came when the balcony doors were pulled open, revealing a gorgeous sunset. The view across the 18th green of the world-famous Torrey Pines golf course
was complete with a spectacular glimpse of the ocean just on the other side. Imagine the view in 2008 when Tiger Woods won his last major at the same course. From that moment, I knew it was going to be a trip to remember. Upon arriving, we did a quick turnaround for dinner. The Lodge’s signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, highlights regional San Diego cuisine served in an elegant, timbered indoor-outdoor dining room overlooking the property as well as the chic green and white cabana striped umbrellas at the pool. The restaurant takes its name from a talented early 20th-century California artist whose works are exhibited throughout the restaurant. For a more casual or lunch option, The Grill offers amazing cuisine with cozy fire pit seating and spectacular views of the putting green. I’m certain the seats have been donned by some pretty famous golfers for a round of conversation and cocktails after completing the 18th hole. Our 5:30am wake-up call gave us a much-needed head start on the day. As we strolled up the 18th fairway from our balcony with clubs in tow, the sun was peeking out above the Pacific. The locals teed off at dawn which let us know that Torrey Pines is a true golf-lover’s paradise. slmag.net

We chose to play the difficult but fair South Course at Torrey Pines, and boy were we in for a treat! The first hole is a welcoming Par 4 that leads up to a beautiful view of the ocean. Luckily, we were playing with two San Diego natives who entertained us with a wealth of local course knowledge throughout the day. The third hole is the signature Par 3 on the South Course, overlooking the ocean and beautiful La Jolla. The front nine was filled with picturesque views as the holes run back and forth along the coastline. The back nine provides a challenging test of golf for even the best of amateur players. My boyfriend recently achieved the honor of “hole in one” status at a St. Louis country club. And he did not disappoint our foursome; he was fortunate to have a two-putt par on the difficult 475-yard Par 4 12th hole. Much like the mid-day sun beaming down on us throughout the round, our game was heating up after a string of pars lead us to the famous Par 5 18th hole. After his best drive of the day, he had no choice but to go for it over the small pond that covers the left side of the 18th green. After some short game miscues, he tapped in for bogey and we thanked our playing partners for such a wonderful day of golf. After the round, we headed into the pro-shop which was filled 32 slmag.net
with all the latest gear for the 2021 U.S. Open venue. We decided on a relaxing post-round lunch with drinks at The Grill where he regaled me with stories of all of his great shots from the round (most of which I missed due to the distracting but breathtaking ocean views). This truly was the best day ever! I’ll be honest- I had my sights set on the spa since the moment we arrived at the hotel. The locker rooms were immaculate, the steam room and sauna prior to my service allowed me to truly decompress before my appointment. I chose the Signature 80-minute massage and I’m so happy that I did. I left utterly relaxed and ready to start our drive up the coast to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for the second half of our trip. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family trip or a golf/spa trip with friends, I highly recommend at least an overnight stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines, just 20 minutes south toward the ocean from the beautiful Rancho Valencia also visited by our Sophisticated Living members. The breathtaking views and worldclass golf are all just bonuses to the hospitality you’ll find around every corner. I’m still in awe of the staff and the chivalry we found. MI CASITA ES SU CASITA Experiencing sunny SoCal hospitality at Rancho Valencia Written by Caylee Matthews “Welcome to our home,” said the lovely attendant who greeted me by name as he offered me a blood orange iced tea in the courtyard of Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa, the only Relais & Châteaux property in Southern California. I could hardly imagine a better setting to call home for a few days: 45-acres that were once part of a 1,000-acre orange grove in the midst of a high-end residential neighborhood just 25 miles north of downtown San Diego. Originally opened in 1989 and owned by an adroit and wellness-oriented San Diego-based investment group since 2010, the resort closed for 10 months as part of a $30 million property-wide refresh completed in October of 2012. Even with the opulent upgrades, the new owners worked with the original architect to ensure that the buildings and grounds remained quintessential Southern California, from the Spanish Colonial architecture to the abundant bright pink bougainvillea. Meshing well with the surrounding residential area, the 49 allsuite casitas average a generous 1,000 square feet, and have either a private garden patio or outdoor spa patio with a jacuzzi. The interiors of the guest rooms boast bespoke rustic-style furnishings, vaulted beamed ceilings, brightly hued commissioned artwork from Mexico City that pops against the warm vanilla-colored walls and wood tones, sumptuous bed linens, walk-in closets, and enormous bathrooms with deep soaking tubs.
My favorite design feature, which I came to appreciate on my very first morning, was a console table outside the front door of my casita, which facilitated daily delivery of sunshine in a glass—aka freshly squeezed orange juice— along with my newspaper of choice. Call me old fashioned, but I relished in what I saw as an invitation to ease into each day. Activities and amenities at Rancho Valencia embody the “work hard, play hard” ethos. For instance, I had no qualms about indulging in a Baja chorizo and egg burrito at breakfast, a signature Rancho burger at lunch (they had me at black truffle aioli), or a bite or two of dessert at dinner, knowing that I’d need plenty of fuel to power me through each day’s packed itinerary. With 95 complimentary fitness classes each week, ranging from hard-core cardio to yoga for beginners, fitness junkies will think they have found heaven-on-earth. An offering of an aprèsclass cold-pressed juice or protein shake is a nice reward and serves as a little extra motivation for those who aren’t as keen on exercising. For a more freestyle calorie burn on property, guests can partake in biking (the resort has a partnership with Italian bike manufacturer Pinarello), hiking, croquet, and bocce ball. A tee time at one of five nearby country clubs can be arranged by the concierge. slmag.net

The Pony Room
Reflecting the passion of its original owner, the property debuted in 1989 with 18 tennis courts, a huge number for a resort with just 50 rooms. The resort has retained its draw as a haven for tennis enthusiasts as reflected in its rating by Tennis Magazine as Southern California’s No. 1 tennis resort each year since 2008. The new owners added two European clay courts and refurbished the 16 plexi-pave championship courts, tennis clubhouse and pro shop. Court time and use of a ball machine are included amenities that fall under the $35 daily resort fee. Robin White, a two-time U.S. Open Women’s Doubles Champion who played professionally for twelve years, used to train at Rancho Valencia in the 1990s. Today, “Rockin” Robin is back at the resort as its Tennis Director, leading an esteemed team of tennis professionals. Her passion is as palpable as her patience while instructing newbies, and in short order she had me feeling relatively comfortable on the court.
I was ready for a reprieve after working up a sweat on the tennis court, and the spa at Rancho Valencia offers up ample opportunities for relaxation. Finding a quiet nook and soaking up the sun in the spa gardens or seeking shade and solace inside a cabana next to the lap pool is a restorative exercise in and of itself. Spa treatments incorporate Natura Bissé and ISUN skin and body care products. During my blissful 90-minute facial, which included the trifecta of a scalp, foot and hand massage as part of the service, the products that were applied to my face smelled good enough to eat! Dining is a delight, whether you are inside one of the exquisitely outfitted dining rooms, or al fresco, where you can frequently spot hot air balloons dotting the sherbet-colored sky at sunset. While each on-site dining destination has its own distinct personality, they share a conscientious commitment to utilizing the best of what’s freshest according to the season, as well as sourcing as locally as possible, including the resort’s own gardens. slmag.net

With servers attired in riding-inspired uniforms, The Pony Room pays homage to the area’s rich equestrian heritage (Del Mar racetrack is only 10 minutes away). While the vaulted ceiling calls to mind the airiness of a barn, the reclaimed wood floors are more literal: barn wood from a Tennessee farm. Serving lunch and dinner, there are 150 varieties of tequila behind the bar (I preferred to enjoy mine in a spicy margarita). Across the courtyard is Veladora, which has similar ceiling architecture as its neighbor, but in a darker hue that adds gravitas apropos for this finer dining destination. A largely monochromatic color palette enables the room’s two focal points—a large artwork by Damien Hirst comprised of thousands of butterflies, and a fireplace surround executed in Venetian plaster tinted a vibrant royal blue—to take center stage. The Mediterranean-inspired dishes are tantalizingly plated, allowing you to discern the freshness of the ingredients even before the first bite crosses your lips. A private dinner in the Wine Cave is a delight for both foodies and oenophiles. Substantial wood doors open to reveal
a long, barrel-vaulted room clad in brick from floor-to-ceiling. Displayed behind a wall of glass is a collection of 250 of the resort’s most prized vintages (from micro-producers in California all the way to Tasmania), along with five full-sized oak barrels filled with the resort’s own private blends. Dan Chapman, an advanced sommelier and champion of boutique producers, said that Rancho Valencia goes to great lengths to get their hands on outstanding and hard-to-find wines, some of which are offered by the glass. If you happen to be on property during the weekend, join Chapman for sabrage demonstration and chat about all things bubbly. While there is certainly enough to keep one sufficiently busy on property, complimentary use of a Porsche Cayenne or Boxster convertible makes it easy to hit local highlights, including Torrey Pines State Reserve, the Flower Fields of Carlsbad and LEGOLAND California. Transportation highlights from the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show Written by Andre James Serving as the first major car show of the calendar year, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas also provides a barometer for both the progress of electric vehicles and how close we are to fully autonomous vehicles. Automotive companies are increasingly utilizing the CES to showcase concept cars of the future along with more ready-for-market leading-edge technology. We rounded up a few notable launches and lurches toward a future where a driver (and in some cases the road itself) are optional. AUDI Audi’s booth at the CES was designed around the motto "from driving experience to digital driving adventure,” and placed the spotlight of two technologies for the in-car entertainment of the future. In the “Audi Experience Ride,” backseat passengers can experience movies, video games, and interactive content even more realistically using virtual reality glasses. The “Audi Immersive In-Car Entertainment” project takes up the action in movie scenes

and translates it into real vehicle movements. In order to establish this new form of entertainment on the market as quickly and comprehensively as possible, a subsidiary of Audi, Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, has co-founded a startup named holoride GmbH, in which it holds a minority interest. Also available for ogling was Audi’s four-door Aicon, a sleek autonomous vehicle designed for fully electric operation, and engineered to cover distances up to 500 miles on a single battery charge. BELL Resembling a drone with seating for four, the full-scale Bell Nexus air taxi concept unveiled at CES aims to begin test flights in early 2023. The vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) vehicle will be powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system, with six 8-foot tilting ducted fans that enable Nexus to go from vertical liftoff to horizontal flight.

BMW The focal point of the BMW’s CES stand was Vision iNEXT, and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which constitutes the central element for interaction between the driver, their vehicle, and their digital world. The BMW Vision iNEXT formed the optical highlight of the exhibition stand, which also showcased the interior design principle “My Favorite Space” with harmonious, natural surfaces and technology that is kept discreetly out of sight and only becomes visible and operable when required by the driver or passengers. Stealing headlines outside the show floor was BMW Motorrad’s self-riding BMW R 1200 GS motorbike, which wowed onlookers as it steered itself around the convention center’s parking lot without falling over. Development of this test vehicle, with its comprehensive understanding of ideal lines and perfect cornering, correct braking point, and traction-optimized acceleration, can help the driver constantly improve their skills. BYTON The Chinese electric car startup previewed the digital cockpit of the production version of its M-Byte SUV. BYTON’s 48-inch, curved Shared Experience Display (SED) remains the world’s largest in-car display for a production automobile. The user can interact with the SED via a seven-inch Driver Tablet positioned at the center of the steering wheel or an eight-inch Touch Pad between the driver and front passenger seats. The production version of the BYTON M-Byte is slated to debut in mid-2019, with massproduction starting at the end of the year.

Switchable bodies on the autonomous driving platform can accommodate up to 12 passengers; in cargo configuration it is able to transport items on ten 40-by-48-inch pallets. NISSAN The all-new Nissan LEAF NISMO RC, an electric race car with more than double the maximum power and torque output of its predecessor, made its North American debut at Nissan's CES display. Two electric motors at opposite ends of the chassis, a new all-wheel-drive system, and a full carbon-fiber racing monocoque structure creates an optimal power-to-weight ratio with an impressive performance of zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. TOYOTA The Toyota Research Institute introduced the TRI-P4 automated driving test vehicle, which is based on the fifth-generation Lexus LS flagship sedan. In a press release, Toyota stated that the P4 is a much smarter research vehicle than its predecessor, thanks to greater computing power, allowing its systems to operate more machine learning algorithms in parallel for faster learning. MAISON + MODE Home and Haute Couture Trends from Paris Written by Bridget Williams Designing eyes were turned to the ‘City of Lights’ during the latter part of January as interior aficionados assembled at the Parc des Expositions for the Maison+Objet tradeshow, and fashionistas flocked to runways staged around the city for Haute Couture Fashion Week. We consulted experts at Maison + Objet for insight on what’s new and next in the realm of home decor, and found that complementary themes could be culled from the runways. Veteran interior design and trend hunter Elizabeth Leriche curated 500 pieces for “What’s New” in the Décor Zone at Maison+Objet. She grouped her selections around three different themes: Minimal Brutalist referred to almost monastic minimalism, offering variations on pared-back pieces and raw materials and

lines; Luxury Graphic was inspired by the decorative arts of the 1930s to the 1970s, and featured luxurious pieces executed in marble, brass and velvet; and, Ethnic Arty, which celebrated the fusion of cultures and the blending of traditional savoir faire revisited by contemporary designers. “These diverse and, at times, opposing themes bear witness to the fact that we live in a society full of paradox where absolutely anything goes,” said Leriche. She noted a rise in the application of concrete, both the actual material and imitation versions in wallpaper, paint, lights and even seating. François Bernard, director of Paris-based trend consultancy agency Croisements, used tastes—savory, sweet, bitter, acidic, and spicy—for the starting point of his top trends in the Share Zone, which focused on tableware. Sweet celebrated pastel tones. Savory embraced whites, greys, blacks and sometimes bluish blacks like volcanic salt. “It is all about rough materials, creating a warm and contemporary rustic feel,” he explained. Bitter turned the spotlight on the green color palate, offering a fresh take on traditions. Acidic showcased yellows and yellowy-greens in all their glory, perpetuating the vintage trends of the 1950s and 1960s. Spicy brought about a riot of red and terracotta. “It’s all about embracing the outdoors, street food, global cultures.” Bernard singled out the commingling of contemporary design with 18th century aesthetics; a rise in popularity of the color red; an increasing use of burnt wood; marbled effects on crockery and platters; and, the “molten” trend, with mirrors and lights flaunting oozing, drip-like silhouettes. In the Leisure Zone, which showcased travel and fashion accessories, stationery, games, connected objects and souvenir gifts, stylist François Delclaux focused on the concept of travel, and the notion of whisking visitors off to three fictitious
countries. Wood Land celebrated wood and all things hipster and natural; Ice Land turned the spotlight on shiny and metallic pieces; and, in Sun Land, all the items exuded a summery vibe and a colorful punch. “These themes also allowed me to make the whole space revolve around nature, which is an extremely vibrant subject,” explained Delclaux. Delclaux pointed out that wood has started popping up in the most unexpected places, including iPhone covers, perfumed candle holders, spectacles, and even technological devices. He noted that nautical motifs can be found in abundance, adorning trays, jewelry, coasters, embroidered patches and even snowballs. “A very 1950s Miami-esque vibe puts coral pink center stage – Living Coral has even been elected color of the year by Pantone,” he added. For each session of Maison+Objet, Paris-based forecasting agency NellyRodi analyses the latest consumer trends and sociological phenomena, and groups them into a theme. The topic chosen for 2019 was Excuse My French!. “There’s a renewed curiosity about the French abroad, a sort of fascination at the moment,” said Vincent Grégoire of NellyRodi. GOOD VIBES ONLY Feeling the Love in Sedona Written by Bridget Williams Sedona, Arizona is a curious creature. I cannot think of another place where you can be standing in the parking lot of a CVS at sunrise and be absolutely gobsmacked by the view, as I was during a visit last summer. As part of a pre-dawn run, I’d made my way from the verdant valley oasis of L’Auberge de Sedona, an 11-acre resort nestled beneath a canopy of trees on the banks of Oak Creek, and up into the high desert to reach Airport Mesa, the site of one of Sedona’s four main natural vortices. For the uninitiated, a vortex is a place where concentrated energy radiates from the earth’s surface, and is purported to facilitate balance, prayer, healing, and intuitiveness. This cosmic presence also helps to explain the surplus of soothsayers, alternative healers, and “magic” crystal shops in Uptown Sedona. After stopping to catch my breath in the aforementioned parking lot, I joined a hoard of people speaking a multitude of languages who’d assembled to patiently wait as the sun’s rays slowly animated the panorama of anthropomorphic and kaleidoscopic red-rock peaks. I can’t say whether I benefitted from the “masculine” energy said to be present there, but based on 50 slmag.net
the expressions of awe plastered on the faces of those around me, there was definitely something powerful about the majestic sight. Situated at an elevation of 4,326 feet, Sedona is a town of 10,000 residents surrounded by more than 1.8-million acres of stunning scenery. A 90-minute drive north of Phoenix, 30 miles south of Flagstaff and just two hours from the Grand Canyon, the area is a four-season playground, complete with seven golf courses; hundreds of hiking and biking trails in the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness Area, the Munds Mountain Wilderness Area and the Coconino National Forest; 80 art galleries with 200 local artists represented in local shops and galleries; the Verde Valley Wine Trail; and a host of tour operators offering everything from off-road jeep excursions to hot air balloon rides. It was easy to forget that we were still in the desert as we turned off of bustling Highway 89A and into the valley where L’Auberge de Sedona, A Destination Resort, is located. The grounds are lush, green, and dotted with mostly single-story cottage-style structures. If it weren’t for the famed red rock buttes crowning the treetops, it would be easy to envision this as an upscale camp in the Northeast.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE The story of Cramoisi Vineyard

A one-year contract turned into three, and during that time I met Ryan McKay, a native of Eugene, Oregon and a wine enthusiast who worked three cubicles from me. We married after two years of dating. Ryan’s passion for pinot noir began while working as a wine buyer in his early 20s. When we started dating, he shared with me his passion for wine and cooking (he is a great cook!). I met pinot through Ryan and fell in love with both, leading me to learn more about wines from Oregon and the different AVA’s there. We started traveling together to wine country, and he expressed his desire to one day grow grapes and make wine as a little home family experiment. At the time I thought it was a nice idea to own our own vineyard, but we did not know anything about wine growing, and we did not have money to invest in one, so we left it as a lofty dream. After our first son Mateo was born in 2005, I took a break from my career, while Ryan accepted a promotion that took us from San Francisco to Toronto, Canada. I was excited for the two of us to share in the experience of being immigrants. After the birth of our second son Jonathan, we relocated to Vancouver, BC. In Vancouver, I resumed working for my previous employer, and discussions during family dinner time increasingly focused on buying a vineyard. Ryan wanted to go back to his roots in Oregon, an idea

that appealed to me as I wanted our boys to grow up surrounded by family. In 2010 we started formally looking for a small place where we could develop our dream and passion for wine growing. After several trips to Oregon, we spied a “For Sale” sign on a 10-acre farm on Worden Hill Road in the Dundee Hills overlooking the Willamette Valley. The Dundee Hills are special because they offer optimal cold air drainage during the colder fringes of the growing season in spring and fall. We closed on the property in 2011, and in 2012 we began planting at an elevation of 500-to-600 feet. Since we did not have the money to plant our land all at once, we started little by little, which gave us the opportunity to research what clones and rootstock have the best potential to grow phenomenal wines. Today, five acres are planted to pinot noir, all of which are unique soil and clone/rootstock combinations. Our clones are a mix of the best clones from Oregon’s first pinot plantings (Pommard), Dijon clones imported from Burgundy (667, 777) and rare clones such as 122 from Vosne-Romanée, a ‘Grand Cru’ vineyard in Burgundy. Our one-acre of chardonnay had its first harvest in 2018. To honor the heritage of our grapes, we decided to name our place Cramoisi, which translates to “crimson” in French. Ryan continues working his day job and helps at the vineyard as his schedule permits. In 2017, I left the IT world to devote all
of my efforts to our family venture and raising our two sons. I am proud to say than I am one of the few Hispanic women vineyard owners in the Willamette Valley. Cramoisi Vineyard is farmed biodynamically; we believe than if you take from Mother Nature you need to give back to her. We are not yet certified but looking to do so in the next two years. Our wine maker is Drew Voit, who has produced some of the most esteemed and highly rated wines in the Willamette Valley. Drew asks lots of questions about the style of wines we want to make, so it is about our own style and not his style. In 2014, our vineyard produced enough to make one barrel (25 cases) of wine. The following year, the first formal vintage, we produced 200 cases. Production increased to 300 cases in 2016 and 600 in 2017. Our goal is to top out at 1,000 cases by 2022. We are focused on quality versus quantity, so that we can grow one of the best wines in the Dundee Hills AVA. Since the business is very small, I perform numerous roles in the vineyard, including vineyard management, marketing and sales, event planning, relationship building and management, and administration, among others. Being a Latina woman in this business is not always easy, and potential clients often ask me about my origins. Some verbalize their surprise that I am Mexican woman who owns
a vineyard rather than simply working in one. While these remarks are exasperating and frustrating, eventually I learned to embrace my unique perspective, life experiences and heritage, which includes the color of my skin and my accent, and I now feel happy that people continue to be interested in my unique story. Because there are not many people like me in my position, being able to turn the tables and use my background as a positive virtue allows me to view myself as a channel to help others and work together as a community. This work includes being active with ยกAHI VOY! and ยกSalud!, two non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting the education and ambitions of winery and vineyard laborers, with a wide range of programs from English-language classes to cellar training. When I came to this business and committed myself 100% to my family venture, I was looking not only to grow grapes and sell wine, but also to tell the story about what is behind the bottle and the years of work that come before the first bottle is even filled. Cramoisi wines have a body, a soul, and a different energy that tells you a story. That story is not only about the owners and the wine maker, it is also about the vineyard stewards who spend the time in the vineyards, rain or shine, hot or cold, up or down, early or late, to complete the story. sl

Alfa Romeo packages pulchritude and performance using Italian panache. Written by Andre James / Photos courtesy of FCA While the flashier fronds on the family tree of Italian automobile manufacturers often garner the lion’s share of attention, brands with deeper roots—Fiat, Maserati and Alfa Romeo—have been turning heads and amassing accolades for more than a century. The first Italian car, essentially a petrol-powered tricycle, was built in 1884. A little more than a decade later, Fiat was founded and produced its first model, a FIAT 4HP, which had a a top speed of 22 mph. Alfa Romeo wasn’t far behind, tracing its roots to the Società Anonima Italiana Darracq, established in 1906 by Frenchman Alexandre Darrracq with backing from Italian investors. Three years later, after a slow start to sales and economic hardships, managing director and Italian aristocrat Ugo Stella acquired the company and relaunched the plant under a new name: Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (ALFA). Designed by Giuseppe Merosi, the 1910 24 HP was the first car to come off of the production line at Portello in Milan under the Alfa name; the 4.1-liter engine could reach speeds up to 62 mph. supplier in Grand Prix motor racing, Formula One, sportscar racing, touring car racing and rallies. Enzo Ferrari drove Alfas in the 1920s before striking out on his own. ALFA faced financial challenges during WWI and was acquired by Nicola Romeo, a successful electrical engineer from Naples, Italy. While automotive production ceased during the war, the company continued to prosper by making airplane engines and portable compressors. Investors took the company public in 1918 under the new official name of Alfa Romeo, and resumed building and designing automobiles at the end of WWI. The marque’s four-leaf clover “Quadrifoglio” logo first appeared in 1923 on an RL Targa Florio. It was painted on the front by legendary driver Ugo Sivocci, who was looking to break a string of runner-up finishes. While he went on to win the Targo Florio race in Sicily, Sivocci later perished in a crash while testing a new race car that did not bear his lucky clover. From that point on, all Alfa Romeo race cars featured the four-leaf clover on a white triangle, with a missing corner symbolizing the loss of Sivocci.

As pet owners, we all tend to think we have the smartest, most handsome or most beautiful creatures on the planet with a variety of tricks up their paws. Tanner can “get the mail,” pull in the trash bins on cue, stretch on demand into yoga poses and identify his human sisters by name, often heading the mad dash for carpool once the backpacks have been loaded. Rory can pull wads of cash out of Mom and Dad’s clothes in the dirty laundry basket, jump into the bathtub, full or empty, whenever thirsty and will stand on hind legs for what seems like an hour, waiting for a treat. Whether these are tricks or neuroses are all in the beholder’s eyes. So the pair of “repawters” scoured the internet, this time Instagram, for a fourlegged someone who could maybe teach them a trick or two. They found “Radical Ruger,” an Australian Shepherd with a certified list of 100 tricks – and an agent. It’s only fair to say Ruger had a head-start from the time he was a puppy. His mom, Kaitlin Bockman, has a degree in agricultural business and animal science, and runs Mind Your Manners dog training. At just 25, she’s been training all kinds of pets, including service and assistance dogs, since she was a teenager, and then she went to college to learn more about the animal industry. Bockman’s first trick dog came as a service dog for her own seizure disorder. As that dog helped her, she taught him 40 tricks. His shorter legs didn’t allow for the strength required for some more advanced moves. “I got Ruger knowing I wanted to do fun and active sports,” says Bockman. “You can’t really start training for agility or disc until they’re two or older so you don’t cause a lot of stress to their joints so we started with obedience and tricks. And by the time he was four months old, he knew about 30-40 tricks. We just kept expanding on that and now he’s at over 100 tricks.” With that talent, Ruger has landed commercials for Purina, and he performs in shows from their Gray Summit location to 66 slmag.net
Wentzville, and up to Quincy, IL. Some of his personal favorite stunts and crowd pleasers include his “rebound,” that’s jumping from trees or buildings or a person on and off, like bouncing. Bockman says he also loves the “back-sault,” when he jumps onto her back and sits. And of course, there’s “play dead.” “It’s not your typical ‘play dead.’ He will get down on the ground and put his paws up and literally play dead,” says Bockman. Ruger lives just north of St. Louis and travels quite often for STL Dog Moms meet-up groups, pet events like Arch Bark and hikes in Castlewood State Park, In his down time, Ruger plays with any big stuffed toy, which he also takes to bed and then falls asleep with it in his mouth. He has three pet siblings. His next obstacle? Learning how to do a handstand and skipping with his front feet. “If you have a dog that’s great at ‘shaking,’ it’s just then getting him to move with the foot in the air and rotate paws,” says Bockman. “A handstand is a lot of body strength. We do a lot of disc work and agility and he already has some, but it’s a lot of just taking it slow and letting him build up the muscles for it.” In case you’re wondering how your dog ranks, Bockman says learning “sit, shake and down” are the average tricks a dog knows. As for her “tricks” for training your pet to do more? “Make it fun. The trick training is not normal for dogs to do. You’re asking them to do something really unfamiliar and in a lot of cases it can be uncomfortable for them to move their body that way because it’s not natural. So just take it slow and be extremely positive with lots of treats and happy baby talk. Don’t ever scold them if they get it wrong just reward them for getting it right,” says Bockman. It seems every year, thanks to Pinterest and Instagram, the requests and demand for originality keeps growing. What are some unique displays, interactive stations and dishes you offer? There is no better feeling than when a client brings an inspiration photo from Instagram or Pinterest and it’s from one of our
events. We pride ourselves on customizing celebrations to create experiences that are memorable and social media worthy. This summer, we like the natural light and fresh feeling of the season. We’re planning some interactive dishes like the Veggie Garden - vegetables that “grow” out of pumpernickel soil with a green goddess base. You simply pick your own veggie, gather a scoop of breadcrumbs and finish with the green goddess dip. It is fun and absolutely delicious! Or, how does a ceviche station, mixed to order, sound? Guests can select a choice of fresh fish cured in citrus and customized with fruits, veggies, herbs and spices. When making recommendations for clients, what kinds of events work best for buffet style as opposed to table stations? It really depends on the event. We’ve catered private dinners for two and festivals for thousands. Stations tend to allow for more creativity and a diverse selection. They are also ideal for larger events with a higher guest count. When entertaining in a client’s home, preventing congestion is a must and stations then serve as a great option. When it comes to buffets, they can be simple or elaborate, depending on the client’s needs. If keeping it simple, start with choosing a salad, vegetable, starch, protein and dessert. The false mindset of fixing it later Individuals facing a divorce or family law matter are often faced with difficult decisions. Their spouse (or the other party to the family law case) may have an attorney. They indicate that their attorney is simply going to draw up the paperwork to conclude the case quick. When faced with this, many decide not to get a lawyer. Their mindset is that although the settlement paperwork is flawed in many respects, they can simply go back and fix it later. In other words, the view of some is that they should simply agree to the settlement that is being proposed. That will make the divorce or family matter end. After the case is done, many think they will just come back later and fix what was wrong with the original agreement. For example, if there are children, and a prior child custody or support order, they figure that they will just modify it later. This strategy is based on an incremental view that you can simply bite off certain parts of the case (like getting divorced) and then later deal with the other issues in the future. Often, this approach is based on saving attorney fees or keeping things civil with their soon-to-be ex-spouse (or the other party). The problem is that modifying a prior court order is not simple or easy. It can be harder to fix something that was not right to begin with than to simply make sure it was fair and just from the start. This is because to modify a prior court order as to custody or support, a party typically has to show a change of circumstances of a substantial and continuing basis. In other words, one cannot come back to court with the incremental argument that they agreed to what they originally agreed to just to get the case done, but that it was not really right from the start. In most courts, this argument will not work. A party has to show that some-
thing is now different. They have to show that the difference is something significant and continuing. For many parties, this can be a tough standard to meet in court. This means that many parties who simply agree to a bad deal to get it done may end up facing a few problematic situations: • One, it might be that they end up being stuck with it and are never able to fix the bad parts of the original judgment or order. • Two, even if a party is successful in obtaining a modification, many spend a lot more money in the long run on attorney’s fees trying to obtain a modification than if they simply had it done right from the start. • Three, in terms of property and debt division in a divorce, this is almost always non-modifiable (meaning the you cannot come back to court later to change the original settlement). This is why parties who have a mindset that they are going to fix the bad parts of their divorce or family law settlement later are often missing the mark. Carolyn Kindle Betz is the President of Enterprise Holdings Foundation, the charitable arm of Enterprise Holdings Inc. The Foundation has contributed more than $354 million to thousands of nonprofit efforts since its inception. And while that keeps her plenty busy, MLS4THELOU, the ownership group bidding for the expansion team, is one of her current passions, along with a scarf she can’t live without. Kindle Betz says, “By far, the best accessory I own. And, you might be surprised that it’s a fleet of… shoes that makes the top ten! 1. “My family: All of it! I might be biased but my nieces are the cutest ever. My husband is pretty great too!” 2. Shoes and purses. “There is no better way to dress up an outfit and show your ‘flair’ than a great pair of shoes. Sensible should not factor into the perfect outfit. Like shoes, purses can be statement pieces. Not to mention, you can carry anything you could possibly need with you at all times. I can have snacks, band-aids, makeup and gum at any given time.” 3. Goldfish. “These little pieces of magic have been known to be my breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not to mention, anyone with children usually has some handy so you don’t have to go far to find them. I ‘share’ with my nieces – one for them, five for me.” 4. Beach Sunsets. 5. Old and new friends. “Good, true friends make you a better person.” 6. Mom’s Christmas cookies. “These are truly a wonderful, sinful indulgence around the holidays. She has been making them my entire life so when the mixer comes out, the holidays have started.”

7. Amazon. “Not only does Amazon allow me to maintain a great relationship with my delivery drivers, it allows me to order anything I want or need at any time of day. Sometimes, I think I have to ‘parental control’ myself.” 8. Challenging work environment. “I enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. Being able to complete a project from start to finish is very rewarding for me. I am also blessed to have an amazing team to support me and the projects. They make me proud every single day.” 9. MLS4theLou scarf. “ It is a great reminder of the new friends, co-workers and supporters I have been lucky to have become a part of my daily life.” 10. Pink. “This is by FAR my most favorite color. It brings me confidence, happiness and a little bit of swagger. If my family sees something pink, they get it for me right then and there because they know I will love it.” sl
