THE FRANSCHHOEK VALLEY

I decided to facilitate acclimation to my new time zone in the tranquil Franschhoek Valley, surrounded by wine country. Awakening to an early pink and orange sunrise with a fine breakfast in the cool morning air, I enjoyed my five-star resort before a day of hiking and relaxing by the pool. The Franschhoek Valley is known for its expertise in gastronomy and viniculture, so indulging my inner foodie was . The plethora of wineries tastings and tours to experience South Africa’s noble cultivars and winemaking methods.

I recommend trying a wide selection of the local varietals, from MADIKWE HILLS PRIVATE GAME LODGE bright whites like Sauvignon Blanc to fuller bodied reds like I then moved into the middle of the safari park to enjoy the Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz. You may find a new addition for Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge. It’s ingeniously situated amongst boulders and age-old Tomboti trees, perfect for viewing your personal cellar. over 66 mammal species, including the Big Five of Africa -- Lion, , Elephant, Rhino, and Leopard. Wooden walkways lit by hurricane lamps criss-cross the grounds and connect the secluded suites (each with a private plunge pool) to the central open-plan lounge, bar, wine cellar, library and dining area up the slope. The twenty-four guests accommodated at this property have a huge advantage for viewing the animals over those staying on the borders of the reserve.

I inspected many lovely hotel properties in the city of Cape Town, but I stayed just outside at the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, taking a car into the city, as often as desired. This amazing property is located above the Atlantic Ocean, flanked by the majestic Twelve Apostles and Table Mountain. My main focus for this visit is to take in the wildlife, so a quick trip to see African penguins up close at Boulders Beach was a mandatory stop and then I enjoyed a day trip west to Cape Point to view ostrich, baboons, buck, and numerous bird species.

My lodge and expert guides ensured my desired animal encounters did not disappoint. I was breathless as I witnessed lions, cheetah, rhinos, elephants, the rare African Wild Dog, and all lounging in their natural habitats. It’s a spiritual and humbling experience to be so close to the origins of life on Earth. There is nothing quite like an African safari, which is why I continue to return to the continent every few years. This is not a once-in-alifetime experience. It truly is transformational in a way to describe, but you’ll want to return for more. The next day I traveled up to South Africa’s most iconic landmark, Table Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes. This ecosystem s a diverse assemblage of plants and flowers as well as a wide variety of birds and mammals including zebras, penguins, and more; all atop a gorgeous mountain overlooking the expansive turquoise ocean.

It was finally time for my “Big Five” adventure. Traveling to South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg, I excitedly moved into my new temporary residence at the privately-owned, Sanctuary Makanyane Luxury Safari Lodge. A follow up from No Pain, No Pills, No Surgery Written by Jeff Baker 3 Chord Medical CEO, Jeff Baker, sat down with Dr. Kevin Rudder to interview the latest in regenerative medicine. Regenerative Medicine uses stem cells as an ancillary therapy using human tissue allograft derived from placental tissue, amniotic membrane and amniotic fluid. This is most powerful, as amniotic fluid and tissue are rich in components for tissue regeneration, including: Growth Factor proteins, Cytokines, Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, miRNA, Associated Exosomes, and Secretomes. Clinical Application to Repair, Reconstruct, and Replace for: • Orthopedics – augment tendon, fasciae, ligament and capsule repair • Neurosurgery – chronic neuritis and pain • Spinal Surgery – facet inflammation • General Surgery – augment tissue repair

A 100-year history has been documented with no reported recipient rejections,since the amniotic tissue does not express HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigens) type antigens. There is a significant body of peer-reviewed literature documenting anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic

What is the most common treatment that you do with Pluripotent MSC’s? Orthopedic modalities because that is my specialty, but we know that we can use these cells for treatment from CVA’s that is a stroke, multiple sclerosis, heart attack, lung disease, almost any thing that a human stem cell can treat that is well documented,

When is Pluripotent MSC’s not a treatment option for the patient? Dr. Rudder: At this time active cancer in the body is considered a potential contraindication at this time. Although, there are studies at this time that show this could actually assist the treatment of certain kinds of cancer in the future.

pluripotent MSC’s can treat effectively. Our focus is primarily orthopedic surgeries, arthritis, inflammatory maladies of the joints, spine, and shoulders. We try to prevent surgical needs by using the reparative properties of pluripotent MSC’s.

What are the post procedure considerations? Nothing, there are not time limits. You do not have to change your activity. In some instances we want you to increase your activity to get a better response in the cellular mechanisms that we are trying to get.

How long before the patient will feel the benefit of pluripotent MSC’s? It varies in each patient. Some feel a benefit right away. It appears to be bimodal in action which means it starts off good immediately after therapy and then drops off and then picks back up 2 to 3 months post treatment with the patient stating their symptoms have dramatically improved.

Is there a market for this treatment? Yes, once the patient understands the treatment and how the cells assist in healing with no down time and very little risk it is surprising to see how many are willing to pay out of pocket for the benefits of this therapy.

Is this a one-time treatment or is this a series of treatments? This is a great question. With pluripotent MSC’s I have not had to treat anyone twice nor have I had to treat anyone twice with stem cells. Nor have I had to operate on anyone I have treated with pluripotent MSC’s or stem cells. How long does this procedure take? 15 to 30 minutes, no anesthesia is required.

Do you ever see this therapy being offered by mainstream medicine and paid for by insurance? Yes, it is my opinion eventually patients will demand these therapies and the insurance will supply the coverage of alternative treatment modalities such as biologics. Modern medicine will become more proactive regarding treatment modalities, instead of reactive, which is where we are today. I will be able to assist healing people more and more with a needle earlier in the disease processes instead of using a scalpel at the end.

From the Editor-In-Chief Unicorns do exist....or at least they do to me and my daughter. Whether you’re seven or 70, alone or in the company of those that might bring out the best of yours, imagination can be a thrilling tour to take, a radical ride along the ridges of what does and what can exist. In a modern time in which judgment prevails more than kindness, acceptance and grace- one of the few things left that never discriminates to whoever carries, wears, listens or uses it is, yes, you guessed it- imagination! Imagine taking a walk in a forest down the street, only to come across a massive collection of bones & wholeheartedly believing they were left by a dinosaur that caught the flu; but in reality, it is in fact the final resting place of a deer that unfortunately had a unhappy ending with a car. Imagine finding 102 four-leaf clovers in the span of three hours, believing that they are the front doors to the homes of trolls & leprechauns; meaning you have the luckiest yard in town! Imagine believing your Daddy is magic because he can always make your blankie miraculously appear after an exhaustive search; but in reality, it was Mom’s exhaustive search, turning the house upside down so he’d be able to tell baby girl to close her eyes & poof! It suddenly appeared from behind his back after yours truly stealthy put it there. Imagine that every time you came across a feather, it was because God sneezed and even though you know he has impeccable manners, he intentionally left those on your path as his little secret message to you that you are always on his mind and that he loves you. Imagine checking in on the fairies that reside in the fairy garden built outside your bedroom, not only discovering which types of candy they prefer, but shockingly, discovering they need an etiquette lesson due to always leaving the candy wrappers everywhere. That’s a typical weekend for us over here. This note could be filled with countless examples from the rest of the week but, by now, you get my point. I never get tired of seeing my daughter’s eyes light up with awe, at times perplexed, but always pleased, never questioning if any of it is real because, as mentioned above, it always is to us. Watching her find a way to elaborate on whatever’s in front of us at the time brings me such joy. Don’t get me wrong, we are not raising our daughter in some utopic fantasy world in which truth and reality are surrounded by blurry lines. But, imagination is certainly a survival tactic, when needed, to transcend the mundane, an intentional tool in her growing arsenal to serve as a hatchet for the things taken too seriously. And, most importantly, as a reminder to find beauty (and humor) in everything as it’s always there for whoever chooses to see it or catch it. 30 slmag.net

And that being said, I didn’t realize how much my childhood would influence my role as a mother. My childhood home was nestled in the middle of a bountiful nature preserve, Owl’s Hill, a gift to the city by the incredibly generous Cheek family, and the founders of Cheekwood. As a little girl, I thought it was torture. Back then, you could only ask the Magic 8 Ball so many questions before you memorized the answers. My Little Pony felt really elementary, really fast. I could have cared less about Care Bears. The only amusement in YoYo’s was actually untangling their quicklyknotted strings. There were only so many ways you could rearrange Mr. Potato Head’s pieces and only so many haircuts Barbie could withstand before they ended up at Goodwill. I could never figure out how to solve a Rubiks Cube. I still can’t to this day. The first iPads arrived in stores 10 years after I graduated high school and not only did L.O.L Dolls not exist, but to my knowledge, neither did the acronym in general. Realizing my means of entertainment was solely dependent on my creation, I had to quickly figure out how to animate my surroundings. Instigating a collaboration between fascination and imagination became my daily routine. When the nature preserve closed for the day, my sister and I would go take mud baths in their pond (pictured below). And when my hardearned allowance from yard work went to candy, as a little girl with a big heart, I was forced to get creative. Therefore, my Christmas presents were made out of moss, sticks, rocks and a glue gun. Some of my family members still have a few of these prized presents to this day- if I don’t say so myself, that’s how well they were made. I was so proud of the final results as each time I felt as if I’d just presented them with the Rolls Royce of those rolling hills. The concept for this editor’s letter was brilliantly born by my 7-year-old partner in crime, after telling her I was having severe writers-block. When asking her what she thought I should write about, I took her answer of “tell them we believe in unicorns” literally and ran with it. The reason I’m sharing the above is simple. Just when we think something doesn’t exist or you can’t find what your soul is looking for- LOOK AGAIN! You might have been looking in the right place, but just looking at it in the wrong way. Cheers to a summer filled with imagination and joy- and happy reading!

No more than 150 will be handbuilt in Italy, with first deliveries scheduled for 2020, to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the legendary Pininfarina SpA design house, founded by Battista “Pinin” Farina. “ This is genuinely a dream come true,” said Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman, Pininfarina SpA. “My grandfather always had the vision that one day there would be a stand-alone range of Pininfarina-branded cars. Both the monocoque chassis and body are comprised of carbon fiber. The T-shaped 120 kWh battery pack is configured with four motors that independently distribute torque and power to each wheel, thereby delivering all the benefits of modern torque vectoring. Cooling circuits and systems are based around five radiators.

Conjoining extreme performance with zero emissions, the roadlegal Battista will be faster than a current Formula 1 race car; its 1,900hp engine enables a 0-60mph sprint in under two seconds. With an estimated range of more than 200 miles per charge, the all-wheel drive Battista will offer five different drive modes for a range of scenarios. An on-board sound program will allow the driver to tailor the noise the Battista makes, focusing on vehicle hardware, rather than artificial sounds, to generate acoustic entertainment. Beefy carbon-ceramic 6-piston brakes provide fade-free deceleration and battery regeneration. “The Battista represents purity, beauty and rarity, and a vision for sustainability that appeals to the heart as much as the head,” said Michael Perschke, CEO, Automobili Pininfarina. “Electrification unlocks the door to a new level of performance

and a zero-emissions future, whilst a passion and respect for automotive history will define how this landmark car looks and feels. We aim for the Battista to be a future classic and automotive icon, writing its own page in automotive history books.” While Pininfarina presented a trio of specifications in bespoke colors, there will be a high level of customization, with lucky buyers working closing with designers at the factory in Cambiano. The company plans to split sales equally among Europe, North America and the rest of the world. Joining the elite club of Battista owners comes with a $2 million+ price tag (official pricing wasn’t available as of press time), a figure that hasn’t deterred the cognoscenti of cars in the United States, who have already reserved more than half of the continent’s allocation. sl

IN PERFECT HARMONY A well-orchestrated experience awaits at Helena Bay Lodge Written by Bridget Williams If we’re lucky, our lives are sprinkled with “pinch me” moments, those blissful instances when life almost seems too good to be true. During my five divine days at Helena Bay Lodge in New Zealand, these enchanted occasions occurred in symphonic succession; the cadence of each day an undulating arc of crescendos interluded with moments of quiet contemplation. Arriving via the resort’s own Westland AW109S Grand helicopter was an overture to our adventure; the 40-minute flight from Auckland allowed us to ogle the North Island’s spindly spines of verdant peaks that settle into rolling farmland before dissolving into white-sand beaches. We were greeted at the landing pad by a bevy of staff members, among them affable general manager and Scotsman Neil McFarlane. Prior to assuming the top spot at Helena Bay, McFarlane spent more than a decade working as a yacht captain for 42 slmag.net

Helena Bay’s owner. Other staff members were also plucked from the world of luxury yachting, so service is always shipshape. Boasting two miles of pristine coastline as part of its 800 acres, Helena Bay opened in November 2016, following six years of construction. Devised to host no more than five couples (or a private group) in spacious villa suites, the property is operated like a private residence. The architecture doesn’t try to fit within a prescribed theme, although inspiration was culled locally from early 19th century buildings, such as Pompallier House in Russell and The Treaty House in Waitangi. From the moment of arrival, you are aware that this is a highly personal endeavor, and nothing is a result of happenstance. For instance, a walkway leading to the pier appears to be carved into the craggy coastline; it wasn’t until someone pointed out that it is molded and colored concrete made to the owner’s specifications, that I was able to discern the doppelgänger.

The property around the resort is a mix of forest and farmland.

Public spaces in the main house highlight Blue Chip artworks from the owner’s personal collection. Some are instantly recognizable, like a pair of monumental works by Joan Miró bookending the fireplace in the gathering room, while others that weren’t created by household names are equally beguiling. Per the owner’s directive, you won’t find identifiers near any of the artworks to prevent a sterile gallery aura from permeating the haute-homey environs. Counted among the communal areas for guests within the main house is a single massage room, and a compact and very well-equipped gym overlooking the heated pool. An exquisite mosaic-tiled sauna and steam room with a cold plunge pool is quite an elaborate amenity for a property of this size. It took one year to painstakingly place the 1.2-million mosaic tiles. A library, formal and informal dining areas and covered terraces in the main house provide plenty of room for guests to lounge in privacy. Taking a moment to study the level of detail inherent in each space underscores both sumptuous and subtle details, such as the replication of the property’s logo in the hefty ceiling molding. While the overarching aesthetic is eclectic, discernable touches of sparkle are sprinkled throughout, from the silver metallic threads in the plush Feiler chenille bath towels in 44 slmag.net

guest villas, to crystal sconces and chandeliers in the main house. Mother Nature is even in on the act, as the calm waters of the bay shimmer in the sunlight. In spite of the upscale accoutrements, this is not a place that takes itself too seriously. Waiting to be discovered throughout the grounds are a pair of larger-than-life-sized sculptures of bulldogs donning sweaters, a 15-foot-tall bronze King Kong tucked into the trees, oversized anthropomorphic vases, and a splatter-painted cow sculpture placed alongside a hiking trail, among other whimsical creations. Guest villas with oceanfront terraces are clustered to follow the gently curving contours of the Helena Bay beach. In-room backpacks stored in the walk-in closet are pre-filled with essentials for a day on the trails, including a water bottle, a property map with a guide to local flora and fauna, and a pair of Leica binoculars. Waiting outside the entrance of each villa are pairs of wellies sized for each guest, so that inclement weather won’t scuttle any planned exploring. Each villa’s super-sized bathroom incorporates mid-century-inspired accent tiles, and a complete suite of Alton Brown products, including room fragrance and a jasmine face wash. A well-stocked minibar features a complimentary selection of New Zealand colas, juices and snacks.

Miles of well-marked and groomed hiking and mountain biking trails fan out from the resort. I spent several hours each day exploring the varied landscape. There are steep windswept hillsides that boast a “ruffled” appearance from afar, thanks to the repetitive plod of Angus cattle who seem to defy gravity as they graze on the slopes; the mingling of guttural moos with seabird sirens creates a unique soundtrack. The naked hills transition into dense forest so enchanting you fully expect a unicorn to peek out from its hiding place behind a giant fern. Four private beaches, some easier to reach than others, are dotted with Seussical-like Pohutakawa trees. There are five PA sites (former fortifications made by the native Maori people) on the estate. If you aren’t feeling fleet of foot, there are several electric 4wd Polaris Rangers at the ready for exploring. Other on-property amenities include a sporting clay range; performance-oriented mountain and electric bikes; a lighted turf tennis court; kayaks and paddleboards; fishing from the dock; and farm tours, where you can visit with laughable llamas, adorable miniature pigs, chickens, goats, donkeys, and Blue and Patch, the property’s energetic and friendly farm dogs. Venture into the reef waters of Helena Bay on the property’s own pontoon boat to fish for snapper, hāpuka, and kingfish. For

those wanting to voyage further offshore, the resort can arrange deep-sea charters to fish for marlin, tuna and swordfish. You can bring “keepers” back to the resort for dinner, or follow our lead and enjoy your catch sashimi-style while still on the boat. At press time, the finishing touches were being put on the resort’s new private yacht—a Dickey Boats Semifly 45—which guests will be able to charter for everything from a romantic cruise to deep sea diving. As wonderful as all of these accoutrements are, the real star of the show, in my opinion, is the farm and culinary program. Dining at Helena Bay Lodge is a 5-star experience that only guests are privy to. Executive Chef Michele Martino, a native of Puglia, hails from Italy’s celebrated Michelin-starred Ristorante Don Alfonso 1890. Chef Martino goes to the garden each morning to inform the menu, which follows principles of the Mediterranean diet; in season, 80 percent of what appears on the menu is sourced on property. “As a chef, our passion starts in the soil. It is the beautiful part of my job, and a dream to be able to decide the menu based on what’s ready,” he said. He added that even a simple salad can be special when it’s made with the right ingredients. Foodie-focused guests are invited to join the chef on his morning garden expeditions. slmag.net

Ingredients that aren’t grown onsite are regularly flown in from Italy, making them unique to both New Zealand and Australia. Chef also collaborates with farm staff to grow Italian varieties of certain vegetables, which often requires mitigating soil and climate differences between the continents. “You get a true taste of Italy because of the ingredients,” Martino explained. After taking part in a garden expedition, we returned back to the resort’s living room, where Chef Martino demonstrated how he prepared Spaghetti alla Nerano, a classic Italian pasta dish with fried zucchini. Bite after bite had me pondering how a dish with so few ingredients could be so beautiful and tasty. A master of simplicity who approaches his craft with friendly ease, Chef Martino pointed out that cooking with fewer ingredients is more difficult because you can’t hide bad technique beneath overwrought sauces or seasonings.

For an extra-special treat outside of dinner, request a picnic lunch at the private Mohei Pavilion on Mohei Bay. The brave of heart can reach the secluded beach by kayaking, which challenges you to avoid ocean swells by maneuvering around jagged rock outcroppings. Unique excursions that can be arranged include winery hopping via helicopter, and a Middle Earth, Fly + Dine Experience, a day-long tour that includes finding thousands of luminescent glow worms in caves at Waitomo, followed by a private tour and lunch at Hobbiton to see the remnants of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie sets. RIGHTING THE SHIP

A quest for physical and mental wellbeing at Miraval Arizona Written by Caylee Matthews The notion that even the strongest coat of armor can occasionally benefit from some reinforcement was what brought me to Miraval Resort near the Santa Catalina Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. Although I was initially skeptical about what I would get out of the experience, the timing of my stay coincided with a number of major life changes, and in short order I was crying, laughing and high-fiving perfect strangers, all of whom came here, to this safe and beautiful place, seeking clarity, comfort and self-care. Over the course of three days, I discovered that the ability to open myself to share raw emotional experiences with others is both humbling and empowering. A wellness retreat trailblazer, the 400-acre resort marked its 20th anniversary in 2016 with a multi-million-dollar renovation of its 118 casually elegant casitastyle guest accommodations, a new state-of-the-art fitness center, redesigned retail space, a new juice bar, a re-imagined welcome experience, and revamped Brave Bill lounge. The expansive Life in Balance Spa debuted in 2012. Miraval Arizona was founded under the premise that life is more meaningful and enjoyable when physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual components are in balance. Whereas other wellness retreats with similar intents may require guests to adhere to a prescribed agenda, at Miraval, guests are free to choose their own path to wellbeing. I fully embraced this concept by choosing fitness-related activities that fell well within my comfort zone, along with a host of classes that fell far outside of it, such as Forgiveness Meditation, Dance of Gratitude, and Native American drumming. I literally didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough hours in each day to participate in all of the activities that appealed to me. Arriving late in the afternoon, I had a hot second to appreciate both the lushly landscaped grounds, and the amenities of my 800-square-foot Miraval Suite (gas fireplace, mountain-view terrace, cloudlike bed, and soaking tub in the bathroom), before my first scheduled activity, a two-hour evening challenge course experience led by guest instructor Matt Walker, a life coach who utilizes adventure experiences to facilitate self-improvement.

Our group of ten women paired off and took turns climbing a wobbly 35-foot pole. Standing together on a small platform at the top in a shared moment of terror, we tossed off pieces of paper inscribed with something we wanted to “let go”, before literally letting go and stepping into thin air, before our freefall was safely interrupted by a cable attached to the back of our harnesses. It’s amazing how fast friends can be made from a shared experience and most of our group met up later that evening for pre-dinner cocktails to celebrate our accomplishment. Rates at Miraval include three meals daily and non-alcoholic beverages. Meals are definitely health-conscious, but don’t suffer for lack of flavor or variety. Inspired by the cuisine of the Southwest, fresh seasonal ingredients are paramount. The buffet-style lunch was my favorite meal of the day; loading up on a healthy selection of salads and soups only felt indulgent. The property recently unveiled a new Life in Balance Culinary Kitchen in partnership with Williams Sonoma. Outfitted with top-of-the-line products from the renowned kitchen retailer, the expansive space will be host to a number of new healthy cooking classes and workshops. The remainder of my trip was focused on striking a balance between my physical and mental wellbeing. While the back-and-forth transition from a “relax and let go” mindset during a meditation exercise to shouts of “push harder” from the instructor during spin class was extreme at times, the dichotomy mirrored real-life, and served as a reminder to take time out of each day to do things that make me feel good both mentally and physically.

I interspersed intense bursts of activity with downtime at the spa, the highlight of which was a Vasudhara massage, a new Miraval exclusive treatment. I was given an eye mask and flotation device to wear for the Thai-style massage, which was carried out in a heated pool. The feeling of weightlessness in the darkness was such an alien sensation at first, but once I gave myself over to the experience, it was absolutely amazing; the buoyancy allowed for a greater range-of-motion to benefit from the Thai stretching techniques. His “It’s Not About the Horse” session left me in awe of his miraculous ability to read someone’s mind through their body language. With the 1000 Miles of Sebring, the FIA World Endurance Championship returns to where it started. Written by Andre James Introduced to the world in 2012 as a replacement for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) allows manufacturers and private teams to compete against one another in nine endurance races around the world, including the revered 24 Hours of Le Mans. A point system, similar to FIA’s other world championships, is employed to award four World Championship titles and five FIA Endurance trophies at the end of each season. Each WEC race features four categories: Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1 for manufacturers, and LMP2 for teams independent of manufacturers and/or engine suppliers) and Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance (LMGTE Pro for teams with professional drivers, and LMGTE AM for teams comprised of amateur 58 slmag.net

Generally produced specifically for competition in the FIA WEC, Le Mans Prototypes are closed cockpit cars with no production minimums, while the Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance cars are two-door, street-legal cars that are available for sale through the manufacturer’s dealer network. The 2018/2019 WEC ‘Super Season’ of eight races kicked off last May at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Ardennes. This past March, the WEC returned to where it started—Florida’s historic Sebring racetrack—the oldest road racing track in America, and the site of the very first FIA WEC race in March 2012. For racing fans, the return of the series provided an opportunity to ogle the stunning and superspeedy LMP1 prototypes vying to reach the checkered flag first. Battling challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain during the closing stages, the No. 8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid team, comprised of drivers Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Olivier Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, led every lap from start-to-finish (253 in total) to take the LeMans Prototype 1 category and their third victory of the season. After the race Nakajimi commented, “I think from the outside it is easy to say it looked quite stable, but actually it was very tricky in the car. In my first stint, I had a lot of traffic so it was tough, but then I jumped in the car at the end, and I knew what I had to do. I

was quite happy in the dry conditions, but I was not happy at all in the end with the rainy conditions. It was amazingly low grip, and it was like sliding on ice...to be honest, I am just thankful we could finish, so the victory is a bonus.” Porsche took the top spot among competitors in the GTE Pro category with drivers Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz. The amateur GTE class was won by a team comprised of Julian Andlauer, Matt Campbell and Christian Ried, driving for the Dempsey-Proton Racing team. Recalling the silhouette of a Porsche 911, the Cayenne Coupe has a steep roofline that falls away to the rear and creates a dynamic and robust exterior. This aesthetic is further substantiated by redesigned rear doors and quarter panels, and a license plate bracket incorporated into the bumper. The current Cayenne Turbo was the first SUV to feature an adaptive roof spoiler, and the Cayenne Coupe features both a roof spoiler and an adaptive rear spoiler as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics. At speeds above 56mph, the adaptive rear spoiler extends by 5.3-inches to increase downforce to the rear axle to improve cornering and grip.

A large panoramic fixed glass roof with an integrated sunshade creates an enhanced feeling of spaciousness. An optional carbon fiber roof is available as part of a trio of lightweight sports packages that also include weight-reduced 22-inch GT Design wheels, performance exhaust, and Alcantara trim. Coining the unique concept, “bed & beverage,” this property features intimate, bespoke accommodations with eight stylish suites, a ground floor bar and outdoor patio, as well as a private rooftop terrace, accessible to guests only. Since opening their doors in early spring 2019 in the heart of East Nashville’s vibrant Five Points neighborhood, this innovative concept has undoubtedly brought a flare unlike any other to the area. Upon arrival into the main restaurant and bar space, guests and locals alike can instantly feel the blushing, southern garden inspiration with soft emerald greens, brushed gold accents and pops of pastels. Inspired by the spirits served at the downstairs bar, each of the eight rooms and suites at Vandyke Bed & Beverage are designed to give homage to eight themes: Rum, Tequila, Gin, Vodka, Wine, Beer, Champagne and Whiskey. The rooms range from a chic suite with touches of gold and rose (the Champagne Room) to a vibrant tropical oasis (the Rum Room) to the loft-like, “top-shelf ” retreat with a punch of retro and two sets of bunk beds (the Whiskey Room). The epic design concept of the space was spearheaded by local interior designer, Brooke Prince.

The forefront of Prince’s design approach was to create a local, natural feel in which the space seamlessly integrated into the surrounding neighborhood. While the structure was in fact built from the ground up, Brooke and husband Justin Prince, who led the build out, worked hard to ensure the space exuded an ode to “old East Nashville glory,” while also giving guests that sense of luxe and newness. While they wanted to give guests a luxury, elevated experience, it was important to the team that the façade of the building married beautifully with their historic surroundings and that the inside was a reflection of just that. To carry this theme throughout, Prince incorporated at least one vintage piece in each room to mix the old and the new, while still honoring whimsical touches. One of Prince’s first purchases,

which resides in the main bar area as well as in the “Rum Room,” is the Vandyke man himself; a lamp standing 2 feet tall with a bold red shade embodies the whimsy of the project. Property Manager, Tinsley Dempsey, was an essential part of the design process as she curated an exquisite art collection throughout the property. The art program highlights unique purchases and commissioned pieces from photographers, fine artists, illustrators and installations artists, nearly all of whom are locals residing in East Nashville. An anchoring piece in the collection is the large installation by Dustin Hedrick that tells the story of the musical heritage of Music City through the faces of some of Nashville’s greatest performers, including Todd Snider, Dave Rawlings, Loretta Lynn, the Fisk Jubilee singers, Gillian Welch and Jack White. slmag.net

General Manager and Beverage Director, Freddy Schwenk, designed the concise, seasonal menu of inspired craft cocktails, which are complemented by eight rotating beers on draught and wine-by-the-glass options. A favorite on the spirit list is the ‘Trashmopolian,’ featuring St George citrus vodka, pisco and recycled fruit. A food menu is available during bar hours, and brunch will be served Friday through Sunday in the bar and on the outdoor patio. What is a favorite you ask? The team unanimously agreed upon the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich, a southern delicacy that was beautifully mastered by Executive Chef Seamus Rozycki.

Bringing the outdoors in and the indoors out was a strategic and well-planned element that can be see throughout the space. Recognizing that an outdoor approach to the bar was key, so the courtyard will be available for al fresco drinking and dining on pleasant days. The intimate space features a turf lawn, outdoor seating, string lights and a vintage Piaggio Ape that was converted by UK-based company, Tukxi, and shipped to Vandyke Bed & Beverage where it will serve as a full-service outdoor bar. With a booming city, excitingly, comes a booming culinary scene. Härth is under the fantastic leadership of Italian-born, Chef Christian Rossit, who carefully created a menu that honors his roots, but with an added flare. Born in Torino Italy, Chef Rossit studied at Bartolomeo Scappi Culinary Institute of Bologna in Italy and has cumulated over 20 years of culinary experience. Rossit seized this opportunity to translate his international culinary talents into an American-style menu while also placing importance on sourcing ingredients locally. 2019 Elegant Frist Gala Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, artist of the French 19th-and early 20th-century art is the current exhibit at the Frist Art Museum. Showcasing this extraordinary collection was the theme of the 2019 Frist Gala. A truly magnificent evening under tent. Sheared fabric lined the interior tent walls in hues of French blue. Crystal, silver, gold leafing created an atmosphere of the grand past. Sparkling crystal chandeliers lined the tent ceiling, framed gold gilded mirrors surrounded by glorious formal drapery panels crowned with shaped upholstered cornices adorned the soft elegant wall treatments. Gala Co-Chairs Kathleen Estes and Suzanne Cato with the keen eye of Hugh Howser, of H Three Events, created a masterpiece gala, as fine as the magnificent French Art on exhibit. A lovely cocktail hour in the Main Lobby of the Frist followed by the four course dinner by Kristen Winston. This collection of Impressionist paintings, as well as the British Sporting Art, are included in the gift by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, an outstanding and comprehensive collection of art.

2019 Swan Ball Reveal Party What do you call a house full of swans, not a swan house, but a bit of heaven. Kathy and Bobby Rolfe hosted the 2019 Swan Ball Reveal at their stately home. Swan Ball Co-Chairs Ellen Martin and Jana Davis shared with their committee details of design, theme, entertainment, etc. In my opinion the greatest of news was that the 2019 Swan Award shall be presented to Nashvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own, the magnificent Clare Armistead. Entertainment to be the Grammy-Award Winning Lady Antebellum, the Swan Ball Jeweler, John de Jong. Yes indeed a lovely piece of Heaven with a home filled with graceful swans.

2019 T.J. Martell Honors Gala

Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Kings Of Leon, Michael McDonald, Garth Brooks, Old Crow Medicine Show, Chip Esten, Band Alabama, Charlie Daniels and Brad Paisley were all part of this star-studded evening, the 2019 Nashville Honors Gala held in February at the Omni Hotel. The Nashville Honors Gala benefits the T.J. Martell Foundation in the mission of funding promising cancer research. The evening honored Dr. Kathryn Edwards, Kings of Leon, Sally Williams, Sylvia and Al Ganier, the Band Alabama. As always, it was an awesome and memorable evening supporting the T.J. Martell Foundation.

Call of the WILD Luncheon Established in 1990, one of the youngest zoos in the country, the Nashville Zoo is recognized nationally, as well as, internationally. The Call of the WILD Luncheon was held on a great spring zoo day, chaired by Jamie Granbery and Lisa Manning. Guest speaker was Joel Sartore, photographer for National Geographic, author, teacher, and conservationist. Sartore expressed how he had photographed over 4,000 zoos in America and abroad, and the Nashville Zoo falls in the top 10! Sartore gives credit to Rick Schwartz, CEO of the Nashville Zoo and Board Chair Julie Walker. A wonderful day spent at the Nashville Zoo!

How About Dinner & A Movie? Forget the popcorn and soda, tenderloin and wine served auditorium style, as in ones lap. A fabulous dinner by Dani Kates, not a bad idea having dinner while watching a movie on the big silver screen. An annual favorite and Nashville tradition for 22 years under the direction of the magnificent Barbara Daane- this event is a benefit for Park Center. For over 35 years Park Center has been serving Nashville providing a place for hope and recovery for people with chronic mental illness, homelessness and addiction. The evening honored one of Nashville’s finest, Edie Bass. In the event program were printed notes to Edie from many of her closest and dearest. This one quote sums up the Honoree, “Without Edie, Nashville would be just another town.” Co-Chairs of this 22nd annual event were Mary Bettis and Joanna Hall, of course serving as Honorary Chair, Barbara Daane. 3

Nashville HRC Patron Gathering

The Human Rights Campaign is Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for all. The annual HRC Nashville Dinner took place in early March at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel. The previous evening a Patron gathering took place at Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams Studio, Green Hills Location. The 2019 Community Equality Award was presented to The Belcourt Theatre for their mission to engage, enrich, and educate through innovative film programming in our community.

Cumberland Heights Spring Luncheon Reaching New Heights Luncheon was held recently at Hillwood Country Club. A luncheon benefiting the Womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Programs at Cumberland Heights. A lovely gathering of some 450 attendees on a lovely spring day. Guest luncheon speaker was crowned Miss USA in 2006, Tara Conner. Conner entered treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, and encourages other women in need to seek treatment. Louise Mandrell was the recipient of the Shelia Keeble Award, presented to women who have made a significant difference in the recovery community. The luncheon was Co-Chaired by Rebecca Owen and Paige Roddey, both looking swell in hot, hot pink!

Nashville Children’s Theatre Presents “A Grand Night” What a grand night it was, this lovely entertaining annual gala benefitting the Nashville Children’s Theatre, under the direction of event Chair Jamie Eskind. The Nashville Children’s Theatre is Tennessee’s only professional, non-profit theatre dedicated exclusively to children and families. Throughout its history, the Nashville Children’s Theatre has introduced young people, as myself as a young boy, to the magic of live theatre through a full line-up of state productions. Did you know the Nashville Children’s Theatre is the oldest continually operating professional children’s theatre company in America? A live and silent auction, stage seating for dinner, and the performance by Gavin Creel was brilliant. Creel received a Tony for his role as “Cornelius Hackl” in Hello, Dolly starring Bette Midler. Creel brought the house down with his love of showmanship and the theatre. I can only hear the voice of Cornelius Hackl, “one, two, three...one, two, three...look I’m dancing!”

Super stars of the silver screen, Holly and Amos have Co-Chaired the Red Carpet Evening for years, benefitting The Belcourt Theatre. The Belcourt believes in building a film culture, which is what the theatre actively does every day. A culture and a community that celebrates film, exhibits it carefully and beautifully, and shares the stories that matter-not simply because they win awards, but because they deserve to be seen. The 30th Anniversary Ballet Ball The best quote of the evening, “real men don’t lift weights, they lift women!” The Nashville Ballet is a type of dance troupe that performs classical, neoclassical and contemporary ballet in the European/Nashville tradition. The celebration, the 30th Anniversary Ball benefitting the Nashville Ballet Company. A grand affair Co-Chaired by Amy Atkinson and Amos Gott, with the beautiful and gifted Dallas Wilt serving as Honorary Chair. Of course, when one has Nashville’s finest of event planners also serving as Co-Chair, one knows to expect the rarity and beauty of an evening. The Laura Turner Hall was completely carpeted in a soft white floor covering, fabulous florals, tall acrylic candelabras. The evening continued into the late hours, dancing to the live entertainment by Louis York and the Shindellas. A highlight back to the past, sequined mask were given out remembering the first Masked Ball chaired by Clare Armistead and Elizabeth Nichols. With mask on face and your departing gift of a goodie bag from Christie Cookies, a delightful memorable evening enjoyed by all.
