CHANTILLY ARTS & ELEGANCE RICHARD MILLE A distinctly French celebration of l’ automobile Written by Andre James When he founded the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille in 2014, Patrick Peter of Peter Auto set out to revive the great French tradition of the Concours d’Elegance. Instead, he created a new style of Concours by combining art, motoring and fashion at a lavish party in the gardens of Le Nôtre surrounding the historic Chantilly Château, whose art gallery, the Musée Condé, houses one of the finest collections of paintings in France outside of the Louvre. In its first two years, the event nabbed Motoring Event of the Year honors at the International Historic Motoring Awards. The 2016 rendition, held on the first weekend in September, commenced with a Saturday morning rally, one for concours entrants and a separate event for Supercars, allowing the public a rare glimpse of some of the fastest and most exclusive cars in the world.

On Sunday, 100 of the most distinguished cars in the world lined up on the Le Nôtre lawn to vie for a victory in one of 21 classes that would put them in the running for the “Queen of the Day” (Best of Show) award as part of the Concours d’Etat. Five classes were devoted to racing cars of the last century, including Bugatti grand prix cars, front-engined Formula 1 cars and the cars of the Tour de France Automobile (1951-1964 and 19691986). A trio of classes was dedicated to famous Italian coachbuilder Zagato. There were also distinct categories that focused less on performance and more on coachwork and a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Miura P400. The jury awarded the Best of Show to the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Berlinetta with coachwork by Touring belonging to American collector John Shirley, entered in the class Pre-war beginnings of aerodynamics – Closed road-going cars. There were eight concept cars in the running for the Concours d’Elégance entered by Aston Martin, BMW, Bugatti, DS Automobiles, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce. Each was paired with a creation by one of six French fashion houses: Balmain, Eymeric François, Giorgio Armani, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jorgen Simonsen and Timothy Everest. The Best of Show award went to DS E-TENSE combined with a creation by Eymeric François. A Mercedes-Maybach 6 Vision associated with a dress created by Jean-Paul Gaultier was named “Prix Public.” The prize for the motorcar and fashion combination deemed the most beautiful ensemble went to the 570GT by McLaren Special Operations with a model also dressed by JeanPaul Gaultier. A special prize was awarded to the new “atelier” motorbike by Zagato, which made its world premiere at Chantilly.

Enhancing the event’s elegant aura each year are the picturesque tailgating tableau created by participating automobile clubs who bring their finest cars and vivid imaginations in an attempt to win the coveted Grand Prix des Clubs Prize with spreads ranging from a simple picnic in the grass to a silver candelabra-laden tablescape. Forty clubs made the trip to Chantilly bringing 800 cars that were on show in the domain. Ensuring that guests will be appropriately attired for such an elegant fete, awards are handed out to the person deemed “most elegant,” as well as the woman with the most beautiful hat. After the event, founder Patrick Peter remarked, “Our concours is now acknowledged as one of the best and most beautiful in the world. This is an important factor in the eyes of the manufacturers. We also have to attract a bigger crowd to reach a figure of 20,000 or 25,000 spectators in the next few years. It took several Le Mans Classics to achieve this number. Thus, I feel confident about the future of Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille.” sl

LOCALIZED LUXURIATING A Sicilian sojourn via villa is an ideal way to become intimately immersed in the Italian island’s many charms Written by Bridget Williams
Brave souls at Mazzaro beach take the plunge into the Ionian Sea. Photo by Bridget Williams.
To varying degrees, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, French, Germans, Spanish, Italians and even the Brits have lost their heads over the control of Sicily, which for thousands of years served as an important strategic crossroad of the Western world. In spite of the rich archaeological and cultural remnants they left behind, it is a single Moorish Casanova of Sicilian legend that arguably left the most indelible mark. There are alternate versions of the story, but around the year 1000 (around the time Viking raider Leif Eriksson discovered North America), a Moor knight or merchant spied a beautiful girl on a balcony in the Kalsa district of Palermo and the pair eventually engaged in a passionate love affair. From here you can choose the outcome of your lore: in the first scenario, unbeknownst to her, the knight is actually married with children, so the scorned woman cuts off his head to use as a flower pot so that her lover can never leave her; in an alternate ending, the lovers’ indiscretion is discovered by the man’s brother who decapitates his sinning kin and discards the body in a nearby forest. The woman locates the head, places it on her balcony and from her tears springs basil, a symbol of passion and love. Her 40 slmag.net
neighbors, noticing how well the plants flourish in the macabre container, made clay copies that are now ubiquitous throughout the country (with the best examples hailing from Caltagirone). Enraptured by the stylized heads even before I knew their grim back-story, for me they sum up a central characteristic of the Sicilian experience: passion. Experiencing the myriad marvels of Sicily required far less effort than mustering up a conquering army or having my head turned into a flowerpot; I booked a stay in a villa through The Thinking Traveler. Not just any villa mind you, one that was built around the time of the French Revolution and is now lovingly cared for as the family heirloom it is. The property is representative of the uniqueness and quality of accommodations in The Thinking Traveler’s portfolio of properties in Sicily, Puglia, and the Ionian and Sporades Islands. Lending credence to my kudos are the readers of Condé Nast Traveller, who awarded the company “Favorite Villa Rental Company” for its 2016 Readers’ Awards. Headquartered in London, The Thinking Traveler maintains a large team “on the ground” that is at guests’ disposal for as much or as little interaction as desired.

The pool and gardens of the Ortensia villa offer views of the Ionian Sea and the slopes of Mount Etna.
Several weeks prior to my visit, I received a lovely care package from the company that included a thoughtfully compiled guide to Sicily prepared in-house by the affable Max Lane, a British expat who now resides in Sicily full-time. At nearly 200pages, it was a light and entertaining read interspersed with photographs, that served as an ideal roadmap for planning where and what to visit based on my interests: archaeology, architecture and eating (not necessarily in that order). Situated south of Taormina on the east coast of Sicily, my chosen villa, Don Arcangelo all’Olmo, boasts enviable views across a lemon orchard to the Ionian Sea at the rear of the property and Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano at the front. Etna’s daily grumblings, accompanied by an occasional release of a luminous ash cloud, proved to be simultaneously unsettling and symphonic, and a source of constant wonderment as I gazed upon it from the comfort of a chaise in the villa’s lush garden. A bit of a sleeper from the outside, once the ancient front door creaks open you are welcomed into the rarefied air of a space that truly feels like a home and displays the worldly point-of-view of a globetrotting aristocrat. Fine antique casegoods nestle up to plush sofas dressed with breezy linen slipcovers; stone and wood floors peak out from beneath an assortment of vibrant kilim rugs; objects of interest and curiosity adorn tabletops and bookcases; breezy drapery billows in the oceanic and jasmine-infused breeze emitted from a plethora of French doors purposely left ajar; oversized arched doorways, groin vault ceilings and soot-stained fireplace mantels add additional architectural. With 12 unique
en suite bedrooms, the fully staffed property can comfortably accommodate up to 24 guests. Wandering and wondering, as I explored each nook and cranny in the grand estate, what these walls, which have held sturdy for more than a millennium through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, would utter about the varied lives of those who have crossed its threshold. Outside, the scene intoxicates the senses, with stone paths meandering through terraced gardens and squares of lush grass, all dotted with varied seating arrangements should you need to steady yourself after having your breath taken away one too many times. “Achingly beautiful” is how I described it in my travel journal. It’s the kind of place where sickeningly sweet love sonnets should be written and recited – ideally to someone gazing wistfully off at the sea from a Juliette balcony on the second floor. A large pool, heated just enough to take the edge off but still feel refreshing, abuts the lemon orchard and is lined with chic iron daybeds and several carefully placed umbrellas for seeking respite from the sun. Each morning I pleasantly awoke to the smell of chocolate croissants baking in the kitchen in preparation for the daily hearty breakfast spread of fresh fruit, bread, meats and cheeses waiting for us in a garden alcove whose structure was composed of tangles of wisteria vines wedded to an iron frame. We chose to have two dinners at the villa and each was a glorious multi-course affair celebrating the region’s local cuisine, expertly served by gloved wait staff and paired with wines from Planeta, a family-owned winery and one of Sicily’s foremost producers, who offers in-villa delivery of their 14 wines in a special partnership with The Thinking Traveller. slmag.net

A bedroom in the Don Venerando villa.
While a good hotelier will recognize the importance of conveying a sense of place, there are often constraints dictated by the property’s size, budget and location. Villas in The Thinking Traveler Portfolio – from ancient farmhouses to modernist masterpieces – encompass myriad viewpoints of the ideal Sicilian experience. A recently refurbished lavastone farmhouse in Pozzillo, La Limoncella, boasts sea and Mt. Etna views and plenty of manicured outdoor spaces, including a divine lap pool and ample covered terraces to soak in the scene. Set amidst a working nursery with sweeping sea views (the owners are the world’s largest exporter of Mediterranean plants), the Don Venerando villa was purpose built as a rental property, but no expense was spared in its construction or elegant interior design, which features top-drawer Biedermeier and Chinese antiques and original artwork. Built around the remnants of an old winery, the original wine press is ingeniously integrated into a half wall in the foyer. Portions of the tile floor were purposefully broken as they were hammered into place to emulate years of use. The owner/architect of the mountainside Ortensia villa in Giarre has filled his eclectic and modern home with a range of contemporary artwork that reflects his Sicilian and aristocratic roots as well as spoils from his far-flung travels. estate crafted out of concrete, caught the attention of Elle Décor Italia, which produced a feature story on the property. Perched on a rocky outcrop on the ocean in Santa Maria La Scala, the five bedroom Crossing the Rock is supremely elegant in its austerity, with white walls, upholstery and drapery interspersed with antiqued mirrors, crystal chandeliers and fine wood antiques, many with gilt accents. Although it is steps from the center of town and its restaurants, bars and shops, one look at the oceanfront pool engineered to sit atop the boulders that reinforces the shoreline, as well as the optional services of chef-for-hire Rosa Maria (whose gnocchi and meatballs are to die for), I imagine one could find it hard to leave. A dearth of activities will certainly never be an issue during a Sicilian holiday. Our first day was spent exploring Taormina. Following lunch on the terrace of Trattoria Il Barcaiolo, which sits in an alcove of the Ionian Sea where brave souls plunge into the azure waters from towering sea stacks, we took a cable car from Mazzaro beach to the historic town center, perched on a rocky promontory. Popular since its inclusion as a stop on the Grand Tour, its demure size belies its importance as a conquest at one time to the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, French and Spanish, each leaving its mark on the “Pearl of the Mediterranean.” The town’s pièce de résistance is its GreekRoman theatre, which was started in the third century BC and whose views would certainly force performers to be at their best.

Since I’d been admiring Mt. Etna from afar since my arrival, her subtle rumbling a reminder of the tremendous latent power within, I devoted a half-day to exploring all around the active volcano, both on and off the beaten path with a driver/guide arranged by The Thinking Traveller. Hiking the moonscape-like lava fields, I was struck by the visual contrast of iridescent silver birch trees that have sprung up intermittently from the crumbly and rocky black-as-night soil created by older deposits of cooled magma. Even from a safe distance, it’s still quite fascinating to watch the clouds that swiftly swirl around the nearly 11,000-foot apex comingle with plumes of steam released from within the crater. An important Greek stronghold, Syracuse, and its island heart, Ortigia, retain a fair share of Greek and Roman architectural remains, along with Medieval Norman and Baroque structures.

After admiring the Piazzo del Duomo with its cathedral built on atop a Temple of Athena, epicures must make a point to visit “I Sapori dei Gusti Smarriti,” located at one end of the market in Piazza Battisti Cesare. I carted out my fair share of Sicilian delicacies, some available exclusively at this exemplary deli. As much as I delighted in devouring each upon my return, a trinket of more permanence–a Maiolica pottery head–as you likely guessed, is my most prized souvenir. Staring back at me from its spot on my kitchen counter, it serves as a colorful reminder of my visit and fittingly, a line from The Princess Bride: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!” For more information about villa rentals and trip planning services in Sicily, Puglia, and the Ionian and Sporades Islands through The Thinking Traveller, visit TheThinkingTraveller.com. sl slmag.net

TO MARKET, TO MARKET Our editor's and publishers share items from their most wanted list
Painting by artist Francine Turk By Bridget McDermott, Publisher, Sophisticated Living Chicago In the last issue of Sophisticated Living, we featured an amazing story on Chicago artist Francine Turk and her latest collection of work, Next Level BadAss: Miles Davis & Francine Turk. I was fortunate to attend the back-to-back events that celebrated the collaboration of the late jazz musician and this incredibly talented woman. The moment I stepped into the gallery I saw this painting, lit up perfectly from every angle, and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I have had a crush on Turk and her art for a long time, but this particular canvas really speaks to me. The explosion of color, the in-your-face messages and the pure rawness of it all…perfection. I Start a Painting and I Finish It, oil on canvas (84”x84”), $68,000 by artist Francine Turk, $68,000 (grace@francineturk.com). Landscape painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir By Jeff Jeffers, Publisher, Sophisticated Living Columbus Who wouldn't want to own a painting by an Impressionist giant like Renoir? This landscape is perfectly understated and a stunning palette - really a wonderful example of his skillful eye for color. Too bad I'm not allowed to bid at our auctions! Selling on November 25 at Garth's Fine Art Auction, this painting is estimated at $140,000 - $160,000 (garths.com). Artisan 22k gold and opal ring by Carolyn Tyler By Amelia Jeffers, Editor-In-Chief, Sophisticated Living Columbus This lavender opal is a striking shade of blue, and I love the luster of the high karat gold. The design gives this ring the feel of an ancient archaeological find. Selling in Garth's December 1, 2017 jewelry auction, this ring is estimated at $2,500 - $4,500 (garths.com). 50 slmag.net

Caracus 16-Light Chandelier from Jonathan Adler By Bridget Williams, President, Sophisticated Living Media An unglazed Peace Hand executed in white porcelain that sits atop a square Lucite base served as my gateway into the wonderful world of Jonathan Adler, and I have since become enamored with everything in his collection, which sports a definite 1970s vibe. Partially through the process of renovating a nearly 150-year-old house, it’s been fun injecting an eclectic mix into the historic framework. I am absolutely pining over this generously proportioned chandelier that would be an ideal companion for the tall ceilings in my kitchen. It’s priced at $2,250 (jonathanadler.com). Dolce & Gabbana Embellished Crown Tiara By Claire Williams, Editorial Assistant, Sophisticated Living Louisville & Lexington Everything about Dolce & Gabbana is perfection. Even if I am in my pajamas watching Netflix, I could put on this tiara and instantly imagine myself as one of the glamorous models in their ads. Price upon request (dolcegabbana.com). The True 48 By Carrie Edelstein, Editor-In-Chief, Sophisticated Living St. Louis I cook a minimum of five nights a week, pack lunches and serve breakfast seven days a week. The True 48 is True's brand new side-by-side refrigerator that has more than 29.4 cubic feet of space. And with little hands that constantly are opening the doors and staring at what's inside our refrigerator, the 120-degree stay-open feature might just put this baby on the kids' wish list! The price tag: $17,000. Anyone wishing to fulfill my kitchen fantasy should contact AUTCO Home, autcohome.com.

Hotel Confidential: One&Only Le Saint Géran Written by Bridget Williams
The mention of Mauritius typically conjures quizzical looks from those whose exotic inklings are likely inspired by a vague knowledge of where in the world the island is located. A small speck in the Indian Ocean some 1,200 miles off the southeast coast of the African continent, if you are arriving via South Africa, your flight path will likely take you over Madagascar, which for me made the destination seem that much more remote, foreign, and therefore exciting. Uninhabited at the time of its first recorded visit by Arab sailors in the Middle Ages and later by the Portuguese, the island was first colonized by the Dutch in 1638. Prior to the opening of the Suez Canal, Mauritius served as an important base for trade routes between Europe and the East, with the French and British involved in a long power struggle for its control. After France surrendered in 1810, the British remained in charge until 1968, when the country became an independent state. Today the 1.2 million residents of the island represent a multiethnic society, with most identifying their ancestry with Indian, African, French and Chinese origins. Hinduism is the dominant religion.

Set within this rich cultural tapestry on its own remote white sand peninsula on the northeastern coast of Mauritius, is One&Only Le Saint Géran. A distinct sense of place is evident as soon as you set foot in the soaring open-air lobby. Water is everywhere, both seen and heard, instantly initiating a mood of tranquility. Each of the resort's 162 suites and signature Villa feature a private terrace or balcony that face either the ocean or the calm waters of a sheltered lagoon that is ideal for an array of complimentary water sports, including water-skiing, windsurfing, stand up paddle boarding, sailing and kayaking. Land-based activities include a nine-hole Gary Player golf course, tennis, mountain bikes, Speedminton, a very well equipped fitness center, yoga, Pilates and volleyball, among others. The brand’s signature KidsOnly program is available for children from ages three to 11. Notable onsite dining options include PRIME Contemporary Grill, which serves Australian Angus Wagyu beef, fresh seafood and organic produce in bold, contemporary environs. La Terrasse, the resort’s main restaurant, is situated adjacent to the sprawling pool with stunning views of the Indian Ocean. At breakfast there is a bountiful buffet; lunch encompasses light meals, salads,

vegetarian and organic dishes; and at dinner the menu includes table d’hôte or specialist buffet options, accompanied once a week by traditional Mauritian Séga dancers. My favorite was the waterside Indian Pavilion, which immerses guests in a North Indian experience, complete with the intoxicating and mouthwatering aroma of roasting Indian herbs and spices wafting from the theatre-style kitchen. The resort’s signature private dining experience is staged in a waterfront, bohemian chic tipi conceived by noted British fashion designer Alice Temperley, complete with a Parisian glass chandelier suspended from the canopy, a custommade wooden floor and dreamy golden-dotted fabric floating all around the interior. In similar fashion to the entirety of the property, the Spa at One&Only Le Saint Géran offers an exclusive sanctuary of quiet pampering nestled amongst a lush tropical landscape. The interior design has discernible Mauritian influence, with subtle tones of amber and gold calling to mind sky and sand at sunset. The relaxation room overlooks a reflecting pool with views of the Indian Ocean, with a sauna and steam rooms rounding out the relaxation spaces. Treatments and signature
wellness “journeys” are carried out in partnership with the award-winning ESPA brand. A hair salon and the celebrated Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure studio round out the array of amenities. Celebrities and others “in the know” have long sung the praises of his unique buffing technique, which leaves nails pink and shiny – no varnish needed! Comfortably reclined on a plush chaise throughout my entire 60-minute “dry” pedicure, my piggies were pampered to perfection. Hard as it may be to pry yourself from the indulgent environs, the resort offers several off-site excursions, including Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius and the Botanical Palmplemousses Garden. I dusted off my haggling skills and opted for an afternoon at the bustling Flacq Market, the largest outdoor market on the island. Maneuvering through throngs of locals jabbering in Mauritian Creole, I surveyed rows and rows of purveyors hawking goods, running the gamut from pleasing to pungent, who were keen on making certain I didn’t leave empty handed. sl Rooms at One&Only Le Saint Géran begin at $354/night. Sip, Savor & Celebrate
Written by Scott Harper, Master Sommelier
Holidays are a time for celebrating life, family and friends. There is arguably no better way to celebrate than by gifting wine and food, or even better yet, enjoying wine and food with said people. Sparkling Wine Every get-together should start with sparkling wine. An excellent alternative to Champagne is high quality Prosecco. The difference between the two is in the second fermentation, the process that creates the bubbles. For Prosecco, fermentation is quicker, taking place in large tanks, hence the term “Tank Method.” The fermentation of Champagne takes place in individual bottles, a process known as the “Traditional Method” or Méthode Champenoise. The less time-consuming fermentation process for Prosecco does not lead to a complex sparkling wine, but it is not intended to. Rather, it produces a sparkling wine that is fresher, flavorful and less expensive. Prosecco Tommasi Filodora (Veneto, Italy) Pale yellow color with copious tiny bubbles forming a light but vivacious mousse. Fresh, vibrant and floral with citrus blossom and white peach in the nose. Dry and refreshingly crisp with a medium body, nice citrus and yellow apple flavors. This is an excellently flavored sparkling wine and a departure from inexpensive Prosecco. Made from 100 percent Glera grape. Winter Reds and Decanting Lots of white wine can be enjoyed year-round, but as we move into winter, I want to introduce a couple of red wines for our celebrations and recommend decanting for both. Decanting red wine is typically done for two reasons. The first is to remove sediment from an aged wine in order to keep the sediment from being poured into the glass. The second is to allow a young wine to aerate or breathe. By aerating a red wine, you are helping to expand the flavors or bring out the aromas and complexities that may only come out in the glass as the wine is poured over the evening. Decanters come in many shapes and sizes, but Riedel has long been considered the benchmark for wine glasses and decanters. They have an immense selection of decanters and glasses for every wine and wine style you can fathom. Ayam Decanter Riedel (Kufstein, Austria) Newly available in July of this year, Riedel’s Ayam Decanter is handcrafted and mouth-blown in Kufstein, Austria. This is a decanter for serious aficionados and is something you must try a couple of times to feel comfortable using, but once you do, you will feel like quite the decanting specialist. It has a beautiful design

that seems to defy gravity, as it can safely hang from the side of many tables. Why you would want to hang this striking piece out of sight, besides being a quick conversation subject, is beyond me. I decanted the two wines below with the Ayam, and it was an excellent vehicle to aerate the wines as well as an elegant and enjoyable decanter to work with. The Northern Rhone of France is home to the finest Syrahbased wines in the world. One of the very best sub-regions is Côte-Rôtie or “roasted slopes.” The continental climate and terraced vineyards on its southeasterly facing slopes help make these wines the benchmark for Syrah. While there are many fine producers, E. Guigal is one of the very best. Côte-Rôtie E. Guigal Château d’Ampuis 2012 (Rhone Valley, France) A medium purple color leading to a garnet red. Ethereal nose of red and black fruits of black and red cherry, raspberry, blackberry and plum. Generous baking spice, pepper, vanilla, anise, violets and cured meats. Dry, full bodied and full flavored with a tannic structure that benefited from decanting in the Ayam Riedel decanter. This wine will age and should be consumed in five to 10 years but is seductive now! It is made from 93 percent Syrah and seven percent Viognier and aged for 36 months in new French oak. 2012 is the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition, available in magnums as well as 750 ml bottles. In south central Tuscany lies the great hilltop town and wine region of Montalcino, famed for one of the very best wines in Italy, Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello di Montalcino is made from the grape Brunello, a synonym for Sangiovese. The dry, maritime climate encourages viticulture on the slopes of the Montalcino hills. Brunello di Montalcino Casisano 2011 (Tuscany, Italy) A ruby red wine leaning to garnet. The nose possesses red fruits such as raspberry and cherry mixed with a touch of plum, blackberry, purple flowers, anise and a touch of herbs, all of which combine to make this a rich wine in a full-body that is complex and appetizing. Crisp and dry with tannins that benefitted from decanting in the Ayam Riedel decanter. Full-bodied yet fresh, this wine is lively and not too big and rich. Made from 100 percent Sangiovese and aged three years in a Slavonian oak cask. Feel free to let this one age three to five years or decant and drink posthaste. This wine is from the Veneto producer Tommasi, which has expanded into Tuscany, as well as other Italian regions. sl A Certified Wine Educator, Harper is one of 147 professionals in North America and 230 worldwide who have earned the title Master Sommelier.

WORTH WINING ABOUT The Destin Charity Wine Auction Written by Madeline Michaels Although it holds the distinction of being the most popular tourist destination along Florida’s Emerald Coast (4.5 million visitors annually), Destin is golden when it comes to philanthropy, as evidenced by its hugely successful annual charity wine auction, which has raised in excess of $10 million for charitable causes in Northwest Florida. The 2016 Destin Charity Wine Auction on April 30th, raised a record $2.65 million; a staggering $350,000 increase over 2015. “Our ability to continually increase the funds raised year over year is a testament to both the strength of our organization and the power of our mission of the charities we support," said John Russell, president of DCWAF. “All of us associated with the foundation are amazed that we continue to garner this kind of support to help children in need in our community." Together with the South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival, which is a separate but related event also held on the fourth weekend in April to complement the Destin Charity Wine Auction, the pair create an indulgent few days for oenophiles, craft beer and spirits aficionados, and gourmands alike. Not just for locals, guests hailing from all corners of the US are given a welcome as warm as Florida sunshine at all events, including private patron dinners held in notable restaurants and private homes in the area on the eve of the auction where guests savor exclusive wine and food pairings and get a closer look at one of the 14 charities the mission-driven event benefits. In 2016 alone, 14 Patron Dinners raised $530,000. Prior to the sold-out 11th Annual Destin Charity Wine Auction this past April, guests milled about in a large tent adjacent to the auction tent sampling gourmet bites and wines poured by notable vintners while perusing 120 lots up for grabs as part of the silent auction. Once the doors to the auction tent were open, guests eagerly took their seats in anticipation for the 55 unique lots up for grab. The opening Magnum Force lot (50 autographed magnums from DCWAF vintners past and present) caused quite a ruckus and raised the bar for the rest of the afternoon by garnering a record-winning bid of $55,000. Finding ideal accommodation near all of the auction action as well as the pristine beaches in Destin and South Walton is as easy as booking a vacation home or condominium from Newman-Dailey Properties diverse portfolio (destinvacation.com). Jeanne Dailey, founder and CEO of Newman-Dailey Resort Properties, is a bastion of philanthropy in Destin and a board member/ marketing chair for the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. A true dynamo, her passion for her profession is evidenced in the many accolades and awards for exemplary customer service, business integrity and overall excellence that have been bestowed upon Newman-Dailey since it was founded in 1985.

THE CLIENT AND THE DESIGNER A view from the 17th floor Written by Jonathan Pierce Photographed by Kathleen Coffeen
How does one begin to design for someone who has arguably seen and experienced it all, but at the same time has brought new ideas to make life fresh and inviting? How does a designer make a home a sanctuary for one who has had such great impact on not only his peers but his admirers and his community? With words I thought I would never hear, moreover from someone whom I have always held in great regard, it all started with “Let’s do it!” How was I to get into the head of and create for this man who is such a humanitarian - a man who has seen so much and touched the world? How was I to take everything he has become over the years - a surgeon, a senator, before all that a father – and encapsulate that a place that will become his personal haven? For me it started with listening and developing a relationship. Listening to what this client wanted to have in his home, internalizing what made him tick and understanding what made him content. This allowed me to bring meaning to the space through old and new items that somehow gave him the edginess he wanted. It represents the classic man he is while introducing the transitional human he wanted to become. I remember my first meeting with Sen. Bill Frist like it was yesterday. Bill was very thorough and clear. He sent me 70 slmag.net
information in order for me to really understand who he was and what he was looking for. In many ways, he made my job very easy. He shared with me in person and in several paragraphs via email where he had come from, his successes, his failures, his family, who he was as a person and what he planned to do with the space. With this information I had the tools needed to make this home his sanctuary. The project took 120 days and was completed with the brilliant support of one of my favorite builders Christ Veal of Whitestone Enterprises. I hope you are captivated by this magazine spread that portrays not only his innovative mind but his interests in global, education and health initiatives. In this home, you’ll see a landscape of beautiful collections representing many of Bill’s life experiences. For instance, Bill’s passion for global health initiatives and his love for Cuban artists are evident in many striking paintings such as the one by Cuban native Hector Frank that welcomes guests in the entrance. This entrance leads into a glorious penthouse on the top of the 16th floor of The Adelicia. The first floor holds a beautiful great room, a dining room that adjoins a kitchen, a bar, powder room and a den. The second floor leads to a study and a master bedroom, with a master retreat and a master bath.

During the design phase of the project, Bill not only talked about his days as a senator, a pilot and a father; he also talked about light and how the light really changed this housing unit. For that reason, we got started with an incredible hanging mobile masterpiece by David Weeks. The massive structure hanging in center of the great room was something the senator found on one of his many trips. The hanging mobile is a balance figure and was custom crafted to his specifications. The hanging mobile extends both horizontally and vertically with each tier comprised of three segments balancing on a central axis allowing for natural movement. Large bottle shades rotate 320 degrees to direct and move continuously, allowing, as he put it, “the room to flow out, and the out to flow in.” For the living room, culture and artifacts represent Bill’s world travels. An Asian-inspired custom built bookcase paired with invitingly-arranged furniture facilitates conversation for the many friends and family of the senator who come there to share a drink, innovative ideas and good stories. Because Bill said he learns and heals through touch, comfort and texture were important to him. The sofa in the great room is cozy and warm and has a pleasing texture inviting all to rest a while. Africa, its mystery and history of mankind, influenced Bill’s preference for more primal earth colors. In listening to this, I chose a palate of cream with a bit of chocolate accent to give boldness while maintaining flow and comfort. In an email to me, he mentioned he wanted the place to be edgy and to have some surprise; a “far cry from typical Nashville Belle Meade.” He seemed 72 slmag.net
to want something more consistent with urban living and style, with more warmth than a contemporary space. Therefore, I chose elegant lamps with lustrous coffee tables and accessories created by Julian Chichester in the great room. These fit impeccably to give the comfort of not quite modern, not quite contemporary, but just that right amount of transitional yet classy edge. The dining room needed great substance because this is where Bill hosts and entertains not only friends and family, but distinguished executives, business associates, delegates and entrepreneurs. I used 5315 dining chairs, created by Swaim, with a horizontal channeling design to give a streamlined new-age quality to the room. Their arched back leg is a visual surprise and thick padding to provide exceptional comfort. The gray dining table by J Alexander expands from eight to 12 place settings to create the perfect space for guests to intimately share each other’s company and enjoy a fine meal together. Above the Danish four-door vellum cabinet by Julian Chichester hangs a piece by one of the city’s favorite artists, Ed Nash. The senator grew up near a lake and has a house in Nantucket where he developed his love for water and nature. These elements are incorporated into the bar via a sculpted plaster wall by Modular Arts that marries walnut with acrylic, giving the temperament of nature and how it is supported by water, achieving a stunning display of his impeccable wine collection. Liddle Creative Custom Cabinetry, Nashville’s best kept secret, brought Bill’s visions of waves and a sense of water that he so often enthusiastically talks about to life.

Off the great room is the den, home to an inviting American leather sofa which transforms into a bed with a very comfortable Temperapedic mattress for the occasional guest. While guests can stay the night in this room, it is a personal room and holds a gentle reminder of Bill’s past including awards, special photographs, honors and books he has both written and read. It also provides an intimate space where he could pull someone aside for “a quiet, trusted, intimate conversation.” A floating steel staircase with wood provides a stunning view of the whole living room while guests retreat upstairs to the study and master bedroom. Shoji screens line the study in order to create privacy for work the perfect ambiance to watch a captivating movie. Inside the study, a handcrafted desk designed by Pierce and Co. made of walnut sits in the corner and provides cubbies that display special items Bill has collected over the years from in the medical field. A chocolate, velvet sectional provides the opportunity to lounge on a comfortable sofa under a compelling painting by Craig Allen called “Populace form the Fragment Series.” The painting is about individual humans and their uniqueness. Allen piece depicts characters with arm movements and embellished clothing to give them life and color. A long tribal runner leads into the bird’s-eye view master suite from the study. There, a custom king-sized bed with baffles is covered in crisp cream simple linens. To the right of the bed, a writing desk by Thomas Obrien with a swiveling chair by City Collection sits near the window giving its user the opportunity to reflect over the great city of Nashville. To the left of the bed sits a Ptolemy chest in faux shagreen with contemporary handles. It is adjacent to a black and white modern oil painting by Ed Nash. The chest’s beautiful inward barrel gives it distinction and edge. A
custom modern fireplace with steel fittings rests gracefully in the wall opposite the master bed providing warmth on winter nights while low maintenance plants show Bill’s love for nature yet accommodate his busy travel schedule. In the master bath, to add texture to the room, a free-standing tub sits on modern gray oak floors under a ceiling of the same gray wooden oak. The counter tops’ custom rounded edges give a midcentury look to the room, while the walnut tower with a metal tambour door breaks up the space in the middle and provides storage for personal items. Each corner of this penthouse has elements representing the essence of who Sen. Bill Frist has become and how he spends his time based on his preferences and experiences. The client-designer relationship is one of communication, listening, learning and trusting. In my opinion, it’s not always the most expensive or most popular name brand that brings it all together, it’s organizing the right pieces in the right way to showcase the details of the client’s life in the home. It’s about making the home a sanctuary. While some may see the word sanctuary as having religious overtones, to me, it refers to a haven - a judge-free place to go to find refuge. It’s a place of peace. Our homes are our sanctuaries. And this is one beautiful home. The client/designer relationship is special; we work as a team. We take something empty and giving it the right touches to make it feel complete. To say the senator and I did this alone would be a false sentiment. There are many players who contribute to completing a client’s home - contractors, vendors and talented subs - who work together to somehow bring a dream to life. To my team at Pierce and Co., I’m speechless on your patience and talent. You give your very best to birth my vision and to give the client the sanctuary he so deserves. sl slmag.net

TO DIE FOR Dia de los Muertos is Alive and Well at MStreet’s Saint Anejo Cantina Written by Leigh Hendry and Gloria Houghland Photography by Allen Clark
On a recent Saturday night, a private party for 40 was held in the upstairs Tequila Library of MStreet Entertainment Group’s Saint Anejo Cantina. Hosted by new transplants to Nashville, the ebullient and generous couple wanted to thank their new friends, who in the way that only Nashvillians can, had welcomed them to the city with open arms. After touring several venues around town, the couple selected this cozy, intimate space, located on a private mezzanine overlooking the first level of the premiere Mexican restaurant. They say that they fell head over heels with the Gulch’s “fun factor,” in particular the epicurean diversity of McGavock Street, Music City’s abridged version of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street combined with the international culture of Orlando’s Epcot’s World Showcase. “It was the perfect choice,” said the host. “We wanted a festive, casual party, but also one that was very nice with upscale food and libations. We loved the Tequila Library’s 86 slmag.net
loft atmosphere with its comfortable leather sofas and chairs, the long, open bar with its wonderfully attentive bartenders, the large screen televisions for the college football aficionados, and, above all else, we felt relieved that our guests wouldn’t have the headache of driving in downtown traffic.” With MStreet’s valet parking thrown into the mix, their guests also avoided the frustrating search for parking. The party menu for that evening included assorted tacos with rice and refried charro beans, as well as house-made queso, guacamole, pico de gallo and chips. Jaime Sutton, guest relations manager, was the point person who seamlessly directed the evening from start to finish. “We would absolutely host another event there and would recommend it for any age group,” the couple gushed. With that glowing endorsement, along with the fact that this was the only M Street eatery we had not visited, we decided now was the time to visit Saint Anejo Cantina.

The first thing we encountered as we approached Saint Anejo -located within the M Street triumvirate of The Rosewall event space and Virago, across the street from Moto and Whiskey Kitchen- is its inviting, outdoor dining area. A series of enormous convertible windows open onto the street in a way that instantly conveys an aura of informal celebration. The elevated large patio shares an indoor/outdoor bar with the interior and comfortably seats a crowd of 55 thirsty and hungry patrons. On a sunny fall afternoon, this place was happening. The rectangular-shaped, concrete topped bar is the domain of bar manager Sarah Jendon. “Everyone at this restaurant feels like family,” she explains. Her creative wheels were turning and she shared with us, along with general manager John White, that she was working on a new Bushwacker tequila cocktail. The two brainstormed about the addition of crème de cocoa and chocolate mousse whipped cream to the classis drink. “This is how things happen here,” White said, with paternal pride. “It may appear to be organized chaos, but it’s truly a well-oiled machine.” Saint Anejo is justifiably proud of its Latin mixology classics constructed with premium spirits, fresh exotic produce and botanicals and unique combinations of nectars and spices. The restaurant’s cocktail list features a plethora of craft margaritas made from any number of their more than 138 - no, that’s not a typo! - tequilas and mezcals. For those wondering exactly what mezcal is, we asked: it’s produced from a type of agave plant. The pina, or pineapple-looking heart of the agave, is smoked for three days in earthen pits, a process which 88 slmag.net
creates a char-smoky flavor. “We really study our craft so that every day at work has a classroom atmosphere. If you are the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room. We learn something here daily,” said director of operations Gregg McDermot, summing up the restaurant’s philosophy. For those who call the restaurant home, like general manager White, the kitchen has always been a classroom. While was raised in New York where his mother owned a high-end Korean restaurant in Flushing, Queens. From the time he was a boy, he remembers working to master the restaurant’s every function after school every day. As an adult, he moved to the corporate world and worked with Carrabas for 10 years before making a career move to Nashville at the age of 34, where he started as Saint Anejo’s sous chef. Not long after that, he was elevated to his current position. Simiarly, Chef Jason Slimak, 38, also started cooking as a young boy at home in Chicago with his mother and father. “My story is more one of cooking out of necessity because my mom couldn’t cook,” he said with a laugh. “So my dad and I just pitched in. I have fond family memories of learning by trial and error. It was then that I started experimenting with fresh ingredients.” Almost five years ago, he moved to Nashville “because it was blowing up with new restaurants.” He became the sous chef at Whiskey Kitchen, later transitioning to the chef’s job at Saint Anejo. While Slimak had previously worked at several Chi-Town Mexican restaurants, it’s his Nashville kitchen staff whom he credits with keeping the restaurant authentic. Slimak’s said his
staff will often pull him aside and say, “‘Chef, here’s how we do this at home.’ It just makes my job that much easier. As a chef you are only as good as those you surround yourself with, so we pay particular attention to their input regarding how to prepare our dishes correctly.” Added White: “This is a culturally diverse city and people tend to gravitate to what they know. Chef Slimak’s staff, all of whom hail from Mexico or Latin America, do a great job of staying true to their roots.” The key to Latino cuisine and a driving force behind the food at Saint Anejo is the melding of top quality and fresh ingredients. The produce comes from Creation Gardens and the delicious chicken from Springer Mountain Farms. Everything is freshly made. They make their own chorizo seasoning and allow the ground pork to marinate in it for hours. Since Saint Anejo serves lunch starting at 11 a.m., Bernardo, the head prepper, comes in at 6 every morning to initiate the process. It’s important to them that everything is authentic and house-made. With that in mind, we started our meal with the Casa Perfecta Margarita crafted from a fresh sweet and sour mix, agave nectar and squeezed lime juice. It was abundantly clear from the first salty sip why this is the most popular item on the menu. However, we quickly became enamored -we had tres!- of the ginger-rosemary margarita, featuring Lunazul Blanco tequila, ginger beer, the house sour mix and rosemary, of course. We would highly recommend a margarita tasting as there are 20 other variations to try. Guests can also order many of these
concoctions by the pitcher, perhaps a more economical way to imbibe. The tequila choices, all 100 percent Blue Agave, cover an extraordinarily wide spectrum including barrel-aged for a year like the Don Julio 70, barrel-aged for three years like the Herradura Selection Supreme, to the standard barrel-aged for at least 60 days like Roca Patron. They also carry the lesser aged tequilas like El Jimador, Tres Agaves, Bluehead, Sauza 901, Jose Cuervo Platino and the Milagro Select Barrel Reserve. The mezcal selections are also stellar ranging from Nuestra Soledad Santiago Matatlan to Del Maguey Minero to Pierder Almas Espadin to Los Nahuales. So, for those who consider themselves connoisseurs, or not, this is the only place to go. Our waiter, Eric Hill and managers Chaley Butler and Dustin Boggs, were all knowledgeable and congenial and explained the menu to us. Saint Anejo employs more than 50 wait staff who go through a rigorous two-week training period. At their suggestion, we tried the assorted street tacos - the hot chicken was our pick of show - where guests select three to five assorted tacos to mix and match. We sampled the Korean short ribs taco as White had already divulged that those were his personal favorite. The beef was tender and succulent while the soft taco absorbed all the juices so efficiently that we wondered why we didn’t eat short ribs this way all the time. The smoked chicken nachos were also mouth-wateringly good. The chef takes thighs and breasts and slowly smokes them for an hour-and-a-half over hickory chips for a result that is smoky and scrumptious.

While enjoying our margarita and tacos in the Pancho Room with its seats for 110, we had a chance to absorb the ambiance of the establishment. It was obvious that Chris Hyndman, M Street founder and president, had blessed this restaurant, as well as his others tucked in on McGavock Street, with his entrepreneurial vision of laid-back-casual meets sexy-sophistication. While the wooden beams, leather banquettes and exposed brick and concrete ooze a sleek, steam punk vibe the red hexagonal lights, colorful tile and painted wall portrait of Mexican Revolutionary General Pancho Villa, roar rock-and-roll cantina chic. Taking a closer look at the textured velvet wallpaper in the 40-seat adjoining Skull Room, we quickly realized the raison d’etre of the name. Barely noticeable, and yet, like a Rorschach test, the gray squiggles, once noticed, emerged to show a multitude of sugar skulls imprinted on the wallpaper. Saint Anejo pays homage with the skulls to the ancient multi-day Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which focuses on family gatherings from Oct. 31
through Nov. 2. As part of the holiday, colorful parties are thrown and revelers enjoy mezcal and edible sugar art. Sugar skull are painted on altars and tombs as a sweet, sugary delight for visiting spirits. That same festive environment is replicated throughout the cantina. Feeling comfortable with the menu, we bravely ordered the Lone Star Chicken Burrito, which we would describe as a mini football for one. Hill teasingly remarked, “Good luck with that burrito,” and walked away with a sly smile on his face. It was so appetizing that we are almost embarrassed to admit, we finished the entire delectable dish and still had room for the hot seller, Saint Anejo’s original guacamole with fresh cilantro, lime juice, Serrano pepper, red onion and “a lot of love,” chef Slimak said. “We keep it simple and fresh, and that’s the way our clientele likes it.” We also thoroughly enjoyed both the chicken fajitas with grilled peppers and onions and habanero cream, as well as the Saint Anejo queso sauce, which was so yummy that we could have devoured several more bowls. slmag.net

We loved the Chicken Verde Enchiladas with refried charro beans, signature cotija cheese, pickled jalapeños and the famous spicy chorizo. Equally as tasty was the Chicken Tinga Quesadilla served with chipotle and Barabacoa crema. The richness of the creamy topping with the sweet and savory barbecue sauce was delightful. For those who relish a margarita but want a lighter fare meal, there are several healthy options from Cobb or kale salads to seared tuna to grilled salmon to roasted chicken. Before our final margarita, which we choose as our “dessert,” barely beating out the Tres Leche Cake, we toured the Tequila Library upstairs and visited the new Mezzanine Room, which just opened in October. It added 55 seats to the private event space along with another bar. It is actually located above the Rosewall event space but extended the Tequila Library to accommodate 95 guests. There are two televisions, festive string lights, a reclaimed wood wall filled with vintage books and tufted leather sofas 94 slmag.net
and chairs along with high top cocktail tables. The eye-catching focal point of the room is the hand-painted mural, again done by Derrick Castle. The framed block prints of his well-known Artesania Sugar Skulls, La Rosa Catrina Guitars and his ode to Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” merges classic outlaw country music with cultural icons of Dia de los Muertos. Saint Anejo is, for all intents and purposes, a terrific place for relaxing, refueling, reveling and shopping. Yep, we couldn’t leave without purchasing Straw Castle skull motif T-shirts for ourselves. The cantina is conveniently open for lunch, dinner and late night snacks, seven days a week. On Saturdays and Sundays, brunch is served with two-for-one brunch libations. Whether you are celebrating Dia de Los Muertos, the Navidad season or just meeting friends after work, Saint Anejo always feels like an absolutely-to-die-for Mexican festival for foodies of every kind. And, obviously, there’s no shortage of tequila. Ever. sl

GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE... BUYING ART AT AUCTION Written by Gary A. Webb and Sarah Sperling With all the media hype surrounding the multi-million dollar sales of art at the auction, there is no wonder some people find auctions intimidating. While it’s true that the excitement, quick pace and need to make split second decisions can be stressful, in actuality, auctions are simple, straightforward affairs. And with a little knowledge and understanding of the process they can be more fun than you might assume! HOW IT WORKS: Preview - Prior to an auction, a preview is typically held. This is where the items are put on display for inspection and specialists are on hand to answer questions. These previews are open to the public and free to attend. Previewing an auction is a wonderful way to learn more about art, and often the only opportunity you will have to see the exquisite and rare pieces before they are purchased and taken back into private collections. Prior to the sale, an auction catalogue is made available online and/or in print. The catalogue includes a photograph alongside a detailed description of each item, provenance and historical significance. In addition, each entry will include a lot number (the order in which the item will be sold) and a presale estimate based on what the auction house believes the work of art will sell for. However, these prices are no guarantee. The works can sell for much more or much less. For example, Brunk Auctions, with offices in Ashville and Nashville, recently offered at auction a Charleston, South Carolina street scene painted by Alfred Hutty (1877-1954). The estimate was between $30,000 and $50,000, but in July 2016 it brought $90,000 at auction. Register - If you are interested in bidding, you need to register for a paddle or bidder number. The process is free, easy and usually involves providing some financial information. If you do not have a bidder number, you will not be allowed to bid. 102 slmag.net
Bidding - There are a number of ways to bid at auction. Typically, clients attend the live auction and bid using their paddles. However, some clients prefer to place absentee bids, while others prefer to bid by phone. These days, auction houses rely heavily on the Internet to reach a broad international clientele. More and more, clients are choosing to bid via the Internet where they can follow the auction and bid in real time. The opening bid is generally set below the lowest presale estimate and reserve price, to attract bidders with the prospect of getting bargains. The auctioneer will take bids from the people in the room, the phone bidders, the absentee bids and the online bidders. Despite urban myths, if you scratch your face or raise an eyebrow, you will not find yourself with an expensive but unwanted piece of art. Auctioneers are professionals. They will not take a bid from you without your confirmation. It is suggested, however, to keep from waving wildly during an auction. After the Auction - At the conclusion of the sale, the auctioneer will announce the winning number and amount. If you are the highest bidder, keep in mind that you will be responsible not only for the hammer price, but also for the buyer’s premium (a charge added by the auction house). This will vary per auction house but typically it is between 20 - 25% of the hammer price, so be prepared to pay more on top of your winning bid, plus applicable tax. Live auctions are often very exciting and the room is filled with energy, especially if there is a lot of active bidding. Don’t be intimidated. Auctions are a terrific way to find unique and interesting pieces that will enhance your life, often at bargain prices. Happy Bidding! sl

LIP AUGMENTATION The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Written by Dr. Brian Biesman Injection of soft tissue fillers into the lips is one of the most popular trends in facial aesthetics today. The dramatic growth of patients interested in lip fillers can be related to pop culture celebrities and social media influences. Interestingly, lip augmentation is perhaps the most highly polarizing procedure we perform. Our patients either love the idea, can’t wait to try it, and sometimes travel to our office from other cities to have lip injections…or they are terrified to give it a try as they are concerned about having unnatural, over-injected results. How is this possible? Why are some people so enthusiastic about lip enhancement whereas others are equally reluctant to even consider it? The answer to these questions is somewhat complex. Lips are extremely delicate structures with beautiful and subtle nuances such as areas of natural fullness and contour as well as an ideal proportionality between the upper and lower lips. Similar to fingerprints, lips are so highly unique that no two people have identically appearing lips. The keys to successful outcomes following lip injection lie in recognition of these subtle details and effective communication between the injector and the patient. Patients seeking lip injections can generally be divided into two groups: young women who wish to further enhance their lip volume and patients (both male and female) who have noticed changes in the appearance of their lips with the passage of time. When treating young women, the goal of lip augmentation is frequently to preserve the lips’ natural beauty by simply enhancing the overall volume while preserving contour and balance. In some cases, volume enhancement may be combined with very subtle adjustments to lip structure that will improve the overall aesthetic appearance. Some filling agents are optimal for gentle volume enhancement whereas others are better suited for making structural changes.
106 slmag.net
Treatment of lips that have changed over time requires a completely different approach, and is more of a reconstructive procedure than of an enhancement. Underlying factors such as age-related volume loss, changes in teeth, and even changes in our facial bones can all contribute to changes in the appearance of our lips. It is important for the injector to understand what the lips looked like when the patient was more youthful as well as the limitations imposed by inherent lip structure. That is to say, while lip volume can be carefully enhanced, there are limits as to the amount of structural change that can be produced with injections. Using a different analogy, adding more air to a thin and delicate racing bike tire will not convert it to a fat and sturdy mountain bike tire. Altogether, multiple unique anatomic factors must be considered when injecting lips that have lost their youthful appearance. Finally, the products used in lip enhancement play an extremely important role in outcomes. In my opinion, only hyaluronic acid products (such as Belotero®, Restylane®, and Juvederm® product families) should be used in lips. A new product in the Juvederm® family, Volbella®, will be released later this year and is specifically designed for treatment of lips and the fine lines which can develop in the surrounding skin. Our practice is one of a few offices nationwide to obtain immediate, exclusive access to this product. Hyaluronic acid products may be dissolved if, for whatever reason, an unsatisfactory outcome is achieved. Lip augmentation is a technically complex procedure that requires intricate knowledge of lip structure and aesthetics. When performed properly, outcomes are spectacular and undetectable; when performed poorly, everyone will know you had something done and that it didn’t work so well. Choose your injector carefully! sl

FRANCOIS & CO Glamour, Heritage & Integrity Written by Carolyn Bryant Photography by Kathleen Coffeen What were you doing as a young kid? Playing ball, riding bikes, or some other appropriately childlike pastime? Thierry Francois, charming and earnest founder of Francois & Co was too. But Thierry was born and raised at the fusion of Italian and French culture, Corsica. He also spent his days roaming the streets of his village Calenzana with a sketchpad in hand, capturing the beauty of architectural simplicity on paper and embedding it in his soul. Childhood travel to Paris, Avignon, Rome, Venice, and Florence provided eye candy to the young lover of architecture and intricacy. “There were so many different statements in terms of design as I walked the streets of historic cities,” Thierry said. Shapes and colors of roof tiles, elaborate ironwork, pavers of stone and terracotta, wooden doors…nothing went unnoticed or unsketched by young Thierry. He imprinted himself with the feel of nature’s irregularities and time codes, and the pleasant odor of materials 110 slmag.net
aging. His imagination filled-in the narrative, sounds, and tastes to match the time periods of the architecture. How? became paramount to Thierry as did where. “How are pavers made? How can they be perfectly positioned without mortar to withstand centuries of wear? Where was the stone quarried?” Where were the artisans from that carved, chiseled, chopped, planed, and buffed to perfection? Thierry’s love of design features, master techniques, and classic building materials such as stone, wood, and metal led to the establishment of his company: a meticulously created and curated collection of surfaces and elements. Seldom do questions asked in youth lead so directly to one’s life work. It is our good fortune that for Thierry Francois they did. Good fortune can be defined as an unknown and unpredictable phenomenon that leads to a favorable outcome. I define good fortune as the moment I stepped into the Francois & Co showroom
in Nashville. It is a multi-sensory experience in glamor, heritage, romance, & integrity. I couldn’t help running my hands over the gorgeous mosaic tiles, reclaimed terracotta, substantive archways, and gleaming metal countertops. My eyes were dancing between the french limestone pavers, rich french oak flooring, tasty marble choices, and bathroom solutions by partner company Devon & Devon. I’ve never wanted to start a home renovation project so badly. It occurred to me that all of Nashville is fortunate to have Francois & Co firmly established here. It says we, oui! as a city, have taste and style and it gives us, our designers and architects, a source for sophisticated and elegant materials. Thierry said that “as a French guy, starting out small, coming here from France” he “wanted to be recognized as a purveyor of impeccable French limestone and French oak flooring” because he truly believes “a room starts with the floor”. Since the company’s
inception in 1997, Francois & Co’s selection of flooring has grown. Fundamental to the company’s flooring is it’s stone. “Every piece of stone carries with it the history of a particular place on our planet” Thierry shared. “Today’s limestone was once a mass of tiny sea creatures, then ancient seabed, and after millions of years, petrified into a mountainside where the limestone is quarried today.” Francois & Co offers ancient reclaimed limestone paving stones including the rare and difficult to obtain Dalle de Bourgogne. Highly prized, unique in hue, and beautifully uneven due to centuries of wear, Dalle de Bourgogne limestone dates back to 13th century farm and manor houses in Burgandy. Francois & Co offers a wonderful alternative to difficult-to-find reclaimed stone in a collection of stunning newlyquarried French limestones. But perhaps most interesting is the line of reproduction Dalle de Bourgogne as it is created using a timehonored technique called Scagliola. slmag.net 111
As a businessman, architect, and entrepreneur, Thierry had always “dreamed of doing something that no one else was doing.” “When I was a child, I came across a technique called Scagliola that Italian craftsmen were doing in their backyard. It was a process so pure and so Old World that I knew it would be challenging to introduce to the United States which can sometimes have different timetables and expectations.” But he had a heart for preserving the past and for exquisite craftsmanship. So he found artisans that were skilled in the old ways of Scagliola which dates back to ancient Rome. Thierry’s team of craftsmen emulate and improve on the age-old technique of layering pigment with a proprietary mix of limestone and marble dust and chips, allowing it to dry, and then hand polishing over the course of many days. Francois & Co’s artisans create architectural pieces that the Medicis and other prominent families of Europe would have coveted. “Reproduction can have a negative connotation” Thierry said. “But I view our reproducing of the past as a tribute to long gone artists.” “Preserving the original artist, cloning him, as well as the household secrets and romance of the time is my passion” Thierry mused. Through his extensive travel in France, he found that 112 slmag.net
the focal point of every french room, even the kitchen, was the mantelpiece. His artisans also replicate museum quality stone mantelpieces, tool marks, chipped corners, missing pieces and all, with Scagliola. Today his collection of mantelpieces represent many centuries of French, Italian, and British beauty, art, and history. Not all of the stone collection, surfaces and design elements, are heirloom in style. Consider Monsieur Francois’ modern take on the range hood. He had me at…Capri, or was it Canelli, no wait, it was Constantine. There are so many fabulous hoods, in contemporary (and historical forms) to choose from, in stone and in metal. Virtruvius, 1st century Roman architect and engineer said “beauty is produced by the pleasing appearance and good taste of the whole, and by the dimensions of all the parts being duly proportioned to each other.” I’m sure Vitruvius would have agreed, the scale of Francois & Co’s range hoods is sheer perfection. The heart and soul of Francois & Co is the beloved French oak flooring. Thierry found that whether it was “sumptuous floors in the private quarters of Louis XIV in Versailles, bleached and oiled flooring from 18th century Parisian townhouses, or warm, naturally distressed oak from ancient farmhouses in the Loire Valley” he needed to know the secrets of the oak. He was “compelled to
study the wood, each piece being a living thing.” He loves the lustre, texture, patina, age, and especially imperfections of French oak and has created an comprehensive selection of fine flooring highlighting all these features. Francois & Co’s captivating collection, classic or engineered, is forested with the industry’s best practices for sustainability. The collection provides a multitude of choices to align with traditional or contemporary design for homes of those with discerning taste. When asked what was next for Francois & Co, Thierry responded that the designer/architect/entrepreneur in him could easily get ahead of himself. His approach is instead to be “disciplined” and to always make sure that they are the “best” at what they are doing. So it is not unusual to find Thierry in one of the company’s workshops, on his hands and knees engaged in the Scagliola process. “At least once a month I am in workshops overseeing quality or joining in the process and production” he stated. “It’s all about going back to basics. I love working with my hands, being in harmony with the materials, and working alongside my artists.” He is extremely excited about additions to the collection that are coming out in 2017. Many of the additions will be to the metal countertop line and accents for the kitchen. Pewter, brass,
copper in the tradition of De Corbusier hot molded or in the cold cast applied method, both offer “authentic and durable surfaces” with “mature texture and patina” which harken back to 1930’s Parisian Bistros. Were it not for Monsieur Francois’ most endearing quality, humility, the company would simply be called Francois. Thierry Francois has built his company knowing that the designing, creating, marketing, and selling of his distinguished products would be a team effort. Thierry is unusually humble and grateful for the team he has curated as carefully as he has his materials. After meeting his team; Jill Fedie, Stephanie Ellis, and Lindsey Leathers, I completely understand his strategy of developing a crack team first. They are amazing, completely devoted to him and the company’s vision. Most importantly they are devoted to their clients. “More than anything else, I am proud of my team. They know that clients are relying on them personally to deliver. They are adept at translating the client’s way of expressing a dream into design reality.” “My team knows I want them to slow down, devote a lot of time to each client, and to treat each person as they want to be treated.” Slow, sweet, and living by the golden rule? For a French guy, he sounds distinctly Nashvillian. sl slmag.net 113

AN ART DECO EVENING
It was the largest social turn out ever for the fourth annual Art Deco Affair held at the Frist Center. The evening was to celebrate this historic Art Deco building that houses the Frist Center and raising funds for its maintenance and preservation. Delphine and Ken Roberts welcomed patrons as Honorary Chairs to an evening of cocktails, incredible Italian dinner, and of course the opportunity to view the many outstanding exhibits on display at the Frist. The jewel of show was the Bellissima! the Italian Automobile Renaissance, 19451975. The dinner menu was an elegant, Italian auto inspired menu with Lancia, Ferrari, Fiat and the Maserati serving as food stations. And all that jazz, Hiptet, a five piece ensemble that has been entertaining Jazz lovers in Nashville for years continued in tradition with sounds of Duke Ellington and Art Blakey, and all that great jazz! Nashville socials love a great attire themed party, black and white attire of the period was encouraged. Ladies in Art Deco style vintage gowns, men in summer white linen suits, white dinner jackets and black tie, tuxedo style. All attendees looked smashing in the Deco fashion for this epic 2016 Art Deco Affair.

THE EMERALD ANNIVERSAY, CHUKKERS FOR CHARITY
Somewhere under the rainbow on the polo field, where dreams of raising funds for the Rochelle Center and Saddle Up!, where dreams were not a dream, but a reality. Nissan Chukkers for Charity, Tennessee’s premier polo event and classic car show took place at Riverview Farm, home of Lee Anne and Orrin Ingram. Celebrating 20 years of magic, the Oz inspired tent decor was most fitting. This event must receive the best in special effects. As the skies opened up with immense down pouring of rain, thunder, lighting, Dorothy we are not in Kansas anymore. The Scarecrow was dripping in wet straw, the Tin man was beginning to rust and the Lion, well he was under the tables with many of the female patrons of the day. Despite the storm, the Emerald Anniversary was a success, a great polo match between home team Nissan Autoweek and the Kentucky Mt. Brilliant Polo Team. A great, some what wet event, but enjoyed by all. This year alone $200,000 was raised for the Rochelle Center and Saddle Up!, and I think to myself, what a wonderful world, as all is well that ends well in the Emerald City.

GRAND AVENUE Carl Haley Creates the Unmatched Experience of Being Driven Written by Paige Atwell Photography by Kathleen Coffeen Transportation. Getting from one destination to another is hardly ever easy, let alone enjoyable. However, more often than not, it’s a necessity. So why not enjoy the ride? Smooth. Clean. Efficient. Luxurious. These are the values that Grand Avenue holds highest. It’s safe to say they are upholding them successfully considering they arrange anywhere from 106 to 110+ trips in 42 vehicles every single day. “It’s all about the memory of the ride. It could be date night or a wedding and we still take care of every detail,” said Grand Avenue president and CEO Carl Haley. On a trip to Atlanta, Haley and his own driver discussed a vision of creating a transportation service to accommodate the growth happening in Nashville. That dream became the reality of Grand Avenue. Alongside sister company Gray Line, a few key helpers in the venture include partners Bob McCreary, General Manager/ Vice President Terrie Lane, Vice President of Affiliate Operations Chase Harper and Vice President of Sales and Client Services Deb 126 slmag.net
Kosmicki. Each partner possesses unique skill set that gives Grand Ave the ability to be the well-oiled machine that it is. Haley emphasized from the start in the business plan that this would not just be another limousine company, but rather a transportation business providing the quality service that professional corporations and individuals alike have come to expect. Since inception, Grand Avenue has prioritized customer service. It’s not a ride; it’s an experience. From champagne and chocolates to music selection and to stopping to walk a pet, there isn’t much they can’t and won’t accommodate for their clients. And that included the cars. Growing from a four-car rotation to an outstanding 46, Grand Avenue specializes in meeting each customer’s requests. Ranging from motor coaches to a vintage Rolls Royce, their selection of vehicles is fitting for every occasion and every need. Aside from their incredible amenities, what makes Grand Avenue’s rides so memorable? Perhaps it’s the convenience. Grand Avenue is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology allowing
customers to arrange pick up times or set notifications 10 minutes before their car arrives. Or perhaps it’s the behind-the-scenes technology. While at their headquarters, at any given moment, Grand Avenue employees are able to see the status of each ride, the vehicle’s exact location and even how fast it is traveling in regards to the area’s specified speed limit. These technology capabilities not only provide convenience but safety. Safety is of utmost importance as not only does Grand Avenue monitor the speed of each vehicle, but also how quickly each driver approaches each stop and how the driver accommodates weather and traffic conditions. But what truly sets Grand Avenue apart is the personal touch of each chauffeur. For each driver, the ride is so much more than a job it is a privilege. Upon being hired with an F class endorsement driver’s license, Grand Avenue chauffeurs are put through extensive training to ensure optimum quality of service. This includes an orientation on philosophies, Nashville knowledge and of course, customer service.
“It’s not just greeting them and taking care of their luggage. I’m going to thank him for choosing us. I’m going to communicate. I’m going to completely interact with them so that they know what’s going on and that they are in goods hands,” said Haley. And those good hands aren’t just limited to Nashville. In fact, Grand Avenue partners with transportation businesses across the world as a way of ensuring that their customers are relaxed, comfortable and taken care of, regardless of their locale. Whether you are in Rome, Turkey or London, Grand Avenue will give you that at-home experience on a global scale. “We can take you anywhere in the world,” said Haley. Haley prides him self in being able to provide what he calls a “one-stop shop” service to his clients. “The most rewarding thing for me is hearing from my clients that they didn’t have to worry for one minute about transportation,” said Haley. So go ahead, be driven. After all, luxury transportation never goes out of style. sl slmag.net 127

DUELING COCKTAILS
The most famous duel in American history is unquestionably that which occurred between Vice President Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. Burr and Hamilton had long been political enemies by the time the gents met on the field of honor. No weapons or gunpowder, just great excitement and splendid fun enjoyed by all at this years annual Dueling Cocktails. A benefit for Belmont Mansion, for sure if Adelicia Acklen were alive today she would have welcomed a festive duel on her magnificent Belmont grounds. The weapons of choice for this duel was a cocktail shaker filled with incredible beverages. The last man standing at Dueling Cocktails was Jason Bradshaw with his winning cocktail, Acklen Slammer. This event was held at the lovely dueling residence of Viviana Lavin and Luis Fernandez, assisting Viviana also as chairs were Jason Bradshaw, Bob Deal and Sharon Sandahl. Yes, Adelicia, the fascinating and spirited woman that she was would have been most impressed with Dueling Cocktails 2016.

A UNIQUE DINING EXPERIENCE
Benefiting Greenways for Nashville, the 10th annual Dinner On The Bridge event was held on a picture perfect fall evening in late September. Needless to say, with the growth and vibrancy of our cities downtown core, dining on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge was truly a unique experience. Under the direction of a great green committee, chairs Brooks and Bert Mathews, Cayce McAlister and Mary Ellen Lovell saw to every detail including aerialists performing suspended from the bridge overhead. With great supporters of The Greenways of Nashville, the organization has helped bring the Greenway total to 80 miles of off-street, multi-use trails and continues to support the conservation of environmentally sensitive lands along our greenway river and creek corridors. Bringing all Nashville neighborhoods within a one-mile walking distance of a greenway is the current goal of Greenways of Nashville and Dinner On The Bridge.

In 2001, the Nashville Wildlife Park at Grassmere officially became the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, if you have not visited our zoo it is a must. The new visitor center, gift shop and restaurant all designed in safari style buildings with thatch roofs contained in the Visitor’s Village is charming, yes right out of Africa. An incredible evening at the zoo, patrons swinging like the Gibbons, prowling around tiger-style, and running like the Zebras, welcoming the Rhinos, Nashville Zoo Style!

COMEDY FOR A CAUSE
Debbie and Michael W. Smith were the Honorary Chairs for Rocketown, Comedy For A Cause. The only thing I knew of Rocketown was that it housed a colossal skateboard park, yes, believe me, they do and what a thrill! Rocketown is a based youth outreach facility in the heart of Downtown Nashville. Their approach to working with youth is holistic, with programs and services nurturing the mind, body and spirit. Once youth are engaged and have become part of the Rocketown Community, there are Ministry-centered programs such as the weekly Skate Church and family gatherings. Founded in 1994 by Contemporary Christian Music Artist Michael W. Smith, Rocketown has continued as a faith-based youth outreach facility and safe haven. The evening, a fundraiser for Rocketown was most spectacular with a seated candle lit dinner with comedy entertainment by Chonda Pierce. With skateboard in hand, I give a high five to Rocketown!

SERIOUSLY SEERSUCKER
A Nashville evening of gargantuan down pouring and thunder storms. One only had to travel 14 miles south to Franklin, not a drop of rain, blue skies and a sea of seersucker. Blue on white, green on white, white on white, red on white, all the colors of seersucker encompassed on the O’More College campus. This event was the second annual Seriously Seersucker Gala, under the direction of Robert Hicks. A quote from Hicks, a New York Times best selling author, “Like New Orleans, where seersucker suits, cocktails, and seersucker parties were all first invented. It’s the occasion to have fun, swank around in your seersucker and enjoy the food, music, cocktails and life.” Drinks, dinner and dancing to the Jimmy Church Band, an absolutely delightful evening, yes seersucker and smiles galore.

WORLD CLASS PROFESSIONAL THEATRE
One Night Only, Studio Tenn’s annual fund raising gala was held in midAugust at Liberty Hall at The Factory at Franklin. This was one of the most highly anticipated social events of the summer season, a knock-yoursocks-off kind of evening. Over 300 guests experienced an unbelievable night of live entertainment, food, cocktails and a generous silent auction, while supporting the 7th season of Middle Tennessee’s own world-class professional theatre company. Liberty Hall was decorated in shades of the evening color, red, as the invitation stated, “Dress To Be Seen, Red Encouraged.” This Franklin-based theatre company produced “Evita” this fall for TPAC. Welcoming guest from surrounding counties were Honorary Chairs, Clare Armistead and Melinda Doolittle along with Matt Logan and Jake Speck. Logan and Speck founded Studio Tenn and are also Broadway professionals. Entering its seventh season, Studio Tenn is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated theatre companies in the southeast region.
