02 PEARSON TRANSIT HUB FAll 2017 | Architecture Studio

Location: 6080 Viscount Rd, Mississauga, Canada Typology: Pearson Airport Transit Centre Proposed Materials: Concrete & Glass This project is to propose 2027’s new transit hub connecting between Toronto Pearson Airport and the transportation services across southern Ontario. As part of professor Kendra Schank Smith’s fourth-year studio class, this design proposal was presented to the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) representatives. In order to increase the growth in an air passenger movement, the transit hub will accommodate rail, bus, and auto networks, while creating new areas for lounges, check-in and security screening, baggage claim services, shops, cafes, restaurants and offices. People from cities in the whole region come to this transit hub to use variety of amenities before they get into Pearson, or vice versa. The large-scale construction tries to achieve the interconnection of multi levels and the interaction between different modes of transportation.

Transverse & Longitudinal Section The design combines different transportation systems from low to high grade. Three zones are explored with the concept: low - subway, middle - buses, taxis, cars and pedestrians, and high- train. As a result, the transit programs are centralized in the middle of two separate buildings. A centralized atrium intertwines a wing-like structure as it achieves to combine two different purposes of the building: east wing is for departures and west wing is for arrivals.

Skytrain The skytrain line runs alongside the dedicated bridge that spans from the hub to the airport. The unique structure and the transitional program give phenomenal and visual experiences of spaces, as well as interactions with the surrounding context.

TRiANQUILITY

Winter 2018 | Architecture Competition

Location: Ozolini retreat, Roga, Latvia Typology: Silent Meditation Forest Cabin Proposed Materials: Plywood, Wood & Aluminum frames Team member: Mackenzie Chiarotto, Rachel Jeong & Jasper Leung The connection between oneself and the environment is made possible with this silent retreat as it allows for one to reconnect to themselves and to nature. This is made possible as it provides a small space away from the everyday, busy life, and allows for a time of silence and relaxation. The enclosed opaque bottom volume of the building creates a feeling of enclosure. The form of the building is inspired by the tepee tent. The building is split into meditation and a private living area to provide different needs for the user. The electric heater is used during the winter to circulate the air flow and keep the cabin warm. In summer, there is an operable window for creating a cross breeze to keep the room at a comfortable temperature.

04 CREATIVE HUB HOUSING Winter 2016 | Design Studio III

Location: 26 Power St, Toronto, ON M5A 3A6 Typology: Mid-rise Residential Compelx Proposed Materials: Steel Panel & Concrete Creative Hub is an artists' co-op housing located in the corner of King and Power St to provide affordable workspaces and residences for the local artists, designers and other practitioners who work at studios, interior and furniture retail stores in the neighbourhood. Influenced by the Corner Housing in Kochstrasse St, Berlin, the lower volume tends to follow the lot line, while the upper volume is tilted slightly towards the west of Power St. The tilted design allows creating a dynamic volume and penetrating natural light through glass elements at different angles. The painted steel panels are applied to the upper volume as it represents lightness and different value of colours, while brick is used for the lower volume that seems heavy and firmness in comparison to the top. Le Corbusier’s United Habitation was another inspiration to apply different colours onto the facades. In addition, three colours are inspired by Piet Mondrian's painting, "Composition II."

Co-op Housing with Retails 48 residential units with different types from bachelor to three beds are provided at the second level and from the fourth to seventh levels. The penthouses are designed with having the mezzanine. On the third level, a featured glass studio provides comfort and spacious working space, and a transparent view to the cityscape of downtown Toronto. The skybridge connects between the studio and the CAD lab so that people can easily shift working drawings to the computer software. A public art gallery encourages artists to exhibit their own artworks and provides a art shop and a cafeteria which are convenient to access from King St. An outdoor display venue alongside the entry of the lobby also generates a vibrant co-op housing.

TREE NEST

Summer 2016 | Architecture Competition

Location: 18 Gould St, Toronto, Canada Typology: TimberFever Design-Build Built Material: Timber & Fabric Team member: Avinash Budhwa, Tanya Gradyuk, Minakshi Suri et al Tree Nest aims to design and build an Urban Refuge that offers a private space disconnecting from the rush of urban life and finding restful in peace. The design takes people from the chaotic landscape of Toronto into the space underneath a forest of tree canopies. A seating is built on the core of the design in order to provide a meditation space for visitors who would like to experience the inside of the structure. Series of wood studs are connected to make the form being curved in a way. The coloured fabrics are used for giving a sense of greenary atmosphere. In order to ensure stability by using a limited number of tools and materials, there were many experiments and trials to build the wood structure with the teams of architects and engineers in four days.

06 URBAN TETRIS Summer 2017 | Professional Work Location: Bujeon-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan, Korea Typology: Glasses Retail Built Material: Aluminum panel + Black panel During the internship at JOHO Architecture, I was involved in several prospective projects specifically on the commercial use. My responsibility was to produce conceptual design, 3D modeling, detailed drawings and presentations. Jeong Hoon Lee, founder of JOHO, puts emphasis on his philosophy about architecture that is based on creating the phenomenological essence through the reinterpretation of a material’s meaning within the context of a site. The Urban Tetris was designed to symbolize the brand of eyeglasses store with having a unique architectural identity. The building tries to utilize the confined space of the urban street and develop the efficient building space for brand shops, offices, café and underground parking. The Façade consists of aluminum silver panels which are constructed for waterproof and LED lighting, while the back side of the store involves solid colours of panels to present the interesting figure of tetris.
