SØ R EN SIB B ESEN Industrial Designer + Engineer
Portfolio 2017
Hello! My name is Søren, Coming from Denmark, my passion has always been Industrial Design. Interestingly enough I started off studying Engineering, which I believed at the time gave me the ability to explore my desire to design new user-focused experience’s through products. I transferred schools, switched into Industrial Design and found what keeps me up at night.
CONTACT
My attention to detail, research, ergonomics, user-centric design, and the need to improve upon currently existing solutions lie within my knowledge of Engineering and Design. I’m looking for future opportunities where I can continue producing exciting products and really have a hand in making every detail and aspect of a product useful.

Facts - Sub-Saharan Africa
In Africa
75% of poorest countries are in Africa, sub-Saharan Africa.
Water + Fuel
16% Have access to drinking water through a household connection, but still risk contamination.
Women’s Time
25% Of women’s time in rural Africa, or roughly 40 billion hours annually, is spent walking long distances to collect water.
BRIEF Design a utility to simultaneously heat food and purify water, and create extra fuel from used char, to minimize stresses of cooking to save women energy, money, and time.
“
Research 16% Have access to drinking water through a household connection. Even when water is available there are still risks of contamination. 33% Without access to any reliable drinking water sources.102 million still dependent on surface water in sub-Saharan Africa. 80% Rely on biomass products such as wood, charcoal and dung in order to cook due to lack of access to electricity. 37% Of those who lack access to clean water globally, are living in sub-Saharan Africa. 50% Suffering from a water-related illness like cholera which thrives where crowded housing and water facilities are suboptimal. 38% Of the world’s refugees are located in Africa. 11 million people, including stateless people and returnees, exist in Africa.
The need for clean, safe water and a cookstove go in hand-in-hand
The world’s most precious resource -Time.
It’s about opportunity. Without clean water, the world’s poorest people stay poor.

Hera Stove Design For Manufacturing
Dimensions Matter
Promote Through Color
The final design was intended to be simplified to allocate for local manufacturing processes.
The size of the product correlated to common stove sizes in the market to generalize that it is a stove after all.
The blue handles and spigot symbolized clean water and directed users for safe handling.
Created by locals by hand or through sheet metal manufacturing techniques like roll bending or stamping.
Sheet metal cut sheets were also looked at to simplify cuts to promote zero waste and save time by reusing many of the same parts.
Benefits of Charcoal
*Removable lid forms to base of stove to mold briquettes from residual burned char for later use as fuel.
Fuel
Purification
Income
Charcoal briquettes are made by mixing charcoal dust with water, a binding agent such as soil, or dung, then the resultant ‘dough’ is shaped, air-dried and later used for fuel.
Carbon filtering removes contaminants and impurities, using chemical adsorption which traps pollutant molecules inside the pore structure of the carbon substrate.
Charcoal use is high in African nations and people are making money as charcoal producers and resellers, while entrepreneurs are making products specifically designed to utilize it.

Usage
1. Disassemble Begin by separating lid, water vessel, and wood chamber.
2.Fill Vessel Using contaminated, unsafe water, fill the water vessel surrounding the chimney up to the pressure release hole.
3. Fill Chamber Using tinder and charcoal, wood, or a similar biomass, fill the chamber and ignite.
4.Reassemble Once the fuel has been lit, seamlessly stack the water vessel on top of the chamber and place the lid on top of the vessel, insulating the water and creating a surface for pots and pans.
5.Cook + Purify Hera Stove saves time spent cooking by heating food while simultaneously purifying up to five liters of dirty water in the water.
6.Clean Water In roughly 25 minutes, Hera Stove can bring five liters of water to a rolling boil. A hole on the back prevents pressure build up.
7.Dispense Once water has reached a rolling boil, turn the faucet to release the now safe water. The design of the faucet forces the hand to turn away from the hot water, increasing safety.
8. Mold Briquette Through a process of gasification, wood is converted into an activated carbon, or charcoal, offering a multitude of benefits.
How it Works
1. Primary Air Intake Air flows through an opening in the chamber and can be controlled by twisting the simmer band to allow more or less 2. Secondary Air Intake Holes on the exterior of the water vessel, around the bottom, allow air to flow up through the double walled chamber to be combined with gas’s from the fire 3. Gas In Holes around the interior of the chimney, around the bottom, allow gas’s from the fire to flow into the double walled chamber to be combined with air 4. Gas Out Holes around the interior of the chimney, around the top, allow a combination of gas’s and air to flow back into the fire to be burned off resulting in a clean and efficient flame. 5. Pressure Release A hole on the exterior of the water vessel allows prevents a build up of pressure from steam 6. Water Out When water has reached a roiling boil for two minutes, turn the spigot to dispense

Cheese Table Eating Experience
An Ostebord (cheese-table) is a traditional way of eating an array of cheese in Denmark.
Hard and soft cheeses with crackers and grapes are usually served.
A cheese set typically only suits cheese slicing and cutting needs.
Cheese-table has different cheese types.

Current Situation
In northern Scandinavian countries babies sleep outside. Which promotes longer sleep.
Indoor air quality tends to have more concentrated pollution and dust.
Newborns( 0-3 months) and infants (4-12 months) spent around 10-16 hours sleeping per day
In 2016, 3,700 babies died from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) in the US alone.
A fan helps circulate air, lowering the chance for baby to “re-breathe” his or her own carbon dioxide.
Fans can reduce SIDS by 70%. and without an open window leads to 85% reduction in chance of death.

WHO IS JAN? Jan is a 68 year old woman, who is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) she needs assistance in getting dressed while in bed and going to the bathroom.
Jan wants to be able to get dressed from her bed.
Be independent and decrease need for extra help.
Assistance is also needed to go the bathroom.
Research “A full dressing assist kit is simply too much for Jan” “A overall solution that I can use to get me through my ADLs” “Avoid the need to be helped by my husband and assistant” “I want my solution to be clean and look nice so I can bring with me to restaurants” “Something that can help me put on my leg braces, socks, and pants”

PERSONAL WORK MY OWN CONCEPTS AND COLLABORATIONS
Focus Band
Wearable designed to be discreet and ground user’s when they are feeling anxious. Collaboration with a Graphic Designer who developed the app and branding along side.
Iterative Sketching - Creating a sleek wearable that allows technology to fit into casing,
Prove Concept - Using 3D Printing and Arduino to show off concepts. User would feel vibration from device and focus on inhaling and exhaling while following lights around mentally.
A clear, keyshot rendering to demonstrate the final concept in a multitude of color combinations.
Packaging Design - Simple, minimal design language that translated into the app that was developed along side of the product by a graphic designer.
Pench
Pench a practical, ergonomic pen and stylus that allows for minor adjustments to different writing and drawing styles, while also making an efficient work flow between digital and analog use.
Demographic Research - Tested and researched with 25 industrial and graphic designers to see the process of using digital and analog pen and stylus tools.
Prototyping to Fix Painpoints “It’s much easier and useful to buy a ergonomic comfortable pen” “I want to use my pen and stylus the same way and not feel different between products” “ There should be an efficient, workflow process to switch between pen and stylus” “A single pen and stylus allows me to stray away from clutter on my desk”
Final Design Overall, users who tested the concept really enjoyed the high comfort level and appreciated how the product fit their writing style.
