outdoor The trend is coming out: to the great out of doors, whether a city terrace or lush backyard. We snip herbs from the garden, entertain on a veranda, by the pool or fireside, and take in fresh, sweet air. Outdoor living and the ubiquitous Brazilian hammock are now de rigueur in the US. Casual is one of the fastest growing furniture categories in North America. Brazilians live for the beach, sky and sun. Even the smallest city balcony will boast a bench or folding chair layered with bright pillows next to a small table for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

contract The heart of true sossego is all about genuine and purposeful human connection.

As an engineer-cum-ar tist, Aristeu Pires designs each piece with great forethought to desired outcomes of human behavior. He envisions a chair to facilitate warm connections, forging and exchanging energy among collaborators. Some pieces are designed for small gatherings of ideators, a respite from a task chair. Others are purposed for working in solitude, naturally enabling a correct posture while engaged with a tablet or smartphone. The cur ve of a backrest, placement of an arm, and pitch of a seat are thoughtfully engineered to rejuvenate the body, whether negotiating an agreement or entertaining a client. Aristeu’s Aurora and Daniella armchairs will sustain long nights in the boardroom as well as an evening of fine dining. They are designed to refresh the body and provide warm hospitality, all while enabling relaxed conversation and the sharing of ideas, goals, and hopes.

Left brain meets right at Aristeu Pires’ design and manufacturing facility where he devised a rare blend of old world artisanal craftsmanship with new world technolog y. Modern engineering via CNC technolog y is the start of as many as 156 steps in the processes that include hand finishing by local craft workers from the Serra Gaúcha region. Each piece, crafted of sustainably har vested Brazilian hardwood, emerges with its individual personality.

accessories A lifestyle of unpretentious sossego cherishes the pure, the genuine, and the authentic.

That Domingos TĂłtora is a dreamer is reflective in his organic and sometimes compulsive work style. He may begin a design with no final stor y in mind. As a form evolves, it may tell him the narrative. For example, the Mesa Ă gua originated as three separate pieces, which he randomly positioned for a galler y show. A friend placed a glass top on the objects, and voila! It took on the form of a bubbling brook with sunlight reflecting off water, smooth stones nestled in the riverbed below. Sustainability is the characteristic enabling a system to be indefinitely productive. There may be no artist who demonstrates this concept as wholly as Domingos. His inspiration derives from the cur vaceous land of his birth. He sources commodities that many would perceive to have no value. His materials are soil and water plus discarded trash. His methodologies incorporate hand labor. The energy for the process is derived from direct sunlight. The result: cardboard repurposed into sensuous and inspirational objects for utility and visual delight at home, in hotels, eateries, and workplace settings around the globe.

The Portuguese word sossego means tranquility. Sossego brings the Brazilian lifestyle of warm, relaxed, and welcomed comfort Pão to deNorth queijo is America. a simple cheese roll, a ubiquitous Brazilian concoction of tapioca flour and Parmesan formed into small balls. In centuries past, cassava roots were peeled and soaked to make the bite-size bread rolls. Today they are still baked and served fresh from breakfast to dinner, sold by street vendors and fine restaurants alike. The unleavened tapioca flour is key to the resultant mixed textures: a crispy shell exterior and surprisingly soft interior. When visiting Domingos last summer in Maria da Fé, he ser ved this comfort food, exhibiting the warm hospitality found across all of Brazil, including in his own home.
