he temperature was 107 degrees Fahrenheit when my husband Barney and I jumped on a plane headed for Taos, N.M. We were ready to escape the heat and were definitely looking forward to a little rest, relaxation and good times with friends. Amazing is the only word I can think of that precisely describes our home away from home and our vacation in Taos. Designed and built by Malcomb Brown, the home was constructed in pieces over 30 years and was completed by Malcomb’s son, Kinlock, upon Malcomb’s death at age 78. Was Malcomb a wizard, like Harry Potter? Maybe so. Upon arrival, panic set in after hearing this architectural phenomenon had no air conditioning. No television either…OK…I was cool with that. One bathroom and a community bath house…now that was interesting. Two bedrooms on the first floor, one on the second floor, a meditation room on the third floor and a look-out room on the fourth floor with the only means of ascent being a ladder. That said, the ladder quickly became the most respected object in the house for the couple that drew the second floor bedroom. Soon, I felt like a kid back at summer camp, carefully planning my trips up and down that ladder to keep the number of trips at a minimum. For the cool temperatures in the evening…my jeans and sweater were right there waiting on the bottom rung of the ladder. The panoramic view from our “tree house” perch or from any window in the home was absolutely breathtaking. Most of our time

6

was spent outside appreciating the gorgeous scenery and talking. Rest, relaxation and good times were easily accomplished. But you certainly don’t have to leave town to relax. This issue provides inspiration and a list (pages 63) of craftsmen and design professionals to assist you in bringing a little more R & R into your life. Award-winning baths (page 26), invigorating saunas (page 58) and soothing flower baths (page 48) are great starting points. Robert Idol, a transplanted interior designer from Atlanta, Ga. shares his beautiful CWE home (page 32) showcasing his esteemed design skills and a passion for art. With the vision of creating a home with a 1940s vibe, Robert achieves the look by incorporating on the main level of his townhome, a tufted Baker Paris sofa in bronze velvet, various saber leg chairs, an Eastlake Biedermeier chest inlaid with ivory and a zebra rug. Both Robert Idol and Becky Kridel, the proud owner of our featured Kirkwood garden (page 40), love relaxing in their gardens. Becky loves shrubs, and if given a choice between flowers and foliage, she’ll take the foliage! Be sure to stay cool in this record-breaking heat!

slhl STYLE MAKER

Tile Style edited BY MELISSA MAUZY PhotographY by Colin MILLER/strauss peyton

With 30 years in the industry, it is sufficed to say that Pat Good, tile designer at Midwest Tile and Granite, has tile style.

SLHL: What types of tile work best in bathrooms? Pat: All tiles are acceptable in bathrooms; however, we need to be very careful in using dry stack materials, which is a stone that is set but not grouted, and metal elements. These tiles are not recommended in shower/wet areas and are best for accent areas, such as your vanity splash or bath walls outside of the shower. SLHL: How does the design process work? Pat: Each job is different. For some clients, they come in with a vanity cabinet or another fixture they have already selected, and we start from there. For others, it is a completely blank slate, and we discuss their desires and style to explore what the client has envisioned. Once we have that vision, we will show our clients products and let them ease into what they are thinking. Space can be a big driving factor. Certain sizes of tile just won’t work with certain spaces, so we create solutions to avoid design issues. Working with the homeowner, builder or designer, we can create fun and unique looks using various elements, such as mixing stone, glass and metals.

18

SLHL: How do you determine colors or patterns for tile designs? Pat: The designs and pattern layouts are infinite! Because of the variety of materials and sizes available, determining color and pattern depends on where we start our selection process. We may start with marble or granite slab selection, allowing the color and beauty of the slab to direct us to the style, texture or color of natural stone for the walls and floors. We also may start with a tile a client loves. We have to consider all of the elements together. They should complement one another, not compete. SLHL: What current trends are you seeing in tile? Pat: A new introduction this season is the “texture fabric-look” finish, which creates a linen and fabric appearance with a slight embossed texture. Also introduced this year are beautiful patterns and designs in the tile creating a wallpaper effect. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

By Sylvia Forbes Photography by Erin Cress-Weiss

Concrete engineering and art combine for stylish, yet functional home decor If concrete makes you think of chipped sidewalks, cracked driveways and crumbling corner curbs, think again. Concrete has come a long way, baby! St. Louis-area artist Eric Dennis has raised concrete to a whole new art form. He uses fine concrete as his preferred medium to make high-end countertops, sinks, fire features and even furniture with a modern flair, for both residential and commercial applications. “Materials and techniques have evolved so much compared to the past,” says Eric. “Even in just the last eight years, the processes have changed tremendously.” Eric uses GFRC, or glass fiber reinforced concrete, which differs in many ways from the old concrete. By mixing glass fibers into it, concrete becomes stronger, yet lighter. It doesn’t need steel reinforcement and doesn’t chip or crack as easily. GFRC can be made flowable so that it will self-level, and it can even be cast vertically. GFRC is so durable that it can outlast traditional concrete. Concrete sealing technology has also improved dramatically in recent years. Some materials can create a smooth crystalline surface similar to porcelain, while others result in a primitive, earthy finish. Certain casting techniques can create a look similar to marble yet distinctively concrete and colors can be incorporated to match existing home décor. A mechanical engineer, Eric became interested in concrete when he accidentally picked up a book on decorative concrete, and saw a stove hood and supporting pillars made of concrete. “It surprised me that concrete could be so ornate, and could be used in so many different ways,” he says. He started experimenting by using a modern technique called fabric

22

forming, where the fabric is stretched into flowing curves and shapes, and is used as the form to cast the concrete. What started out as a hobby soon became an obsession and passion. He saw an opportunity for turning it into a business, quit his engineering job and has never looked back. Eric notes that he has invested as much time in learning about concrete as he did earning his engineering degree. Working with concrete gives him satisfaction because it not only includes the science aspect of working out design, logistics and material properties, but also the artistic fulfillment, the satisfaction of creating a beautiful, yet functional piece that’s uniquely his. One unusual piece is his arable fire table. “I created a new molding technique to make the table base,” Eric explains. “It has 18 distinct layers that are randomly patterned. I wanted it to be raw and unapologetic—I didn’t want it glossy. The top has recessed coasters which are connected by channels in a way that reminds me of crop circles.” A fire burns over crystals in the central recessed area. Eric enjoys the challenge of new commissions. “I like custom design—I like to do things that are different than I’ve ever done before,” he says. “My favorite piece is always the next one. If I can imagine it, I can create it.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

serene symmetry Formal and balanced, this newly constructed master bathroom is a private, tranquil space. The combination of his and her cherry stained furniture-base vanity cabinets, creamy marble vanity tops, beveled-framed mirrors and polished chrome faucets lend a timeless and classic beauty to this luxurious space by Bruning Homes, Inc. Intricately designed marble floors complement the vanity cabinets, flanked by an English bronze and crystal chandelier and vanity sconces adding a touch of glamour. The white lacquered-paneled vanity wall further balances the bathroom, while preserving the elegance. A spacious shower and bubble massage tub offers a soothing experience fitting for the beginning or end of the day. Judges’ Comments:

One can certainly appreciate the symmetry in this bathroom. They did a great job accentuating the height of the ceiling with the tall mirrors over the vanities. The freestanding furniture vanity is elegantly paired against the detailed millwork.

elegant escape Take one step into this plush master bath, and the charming

details are abundant. From the antique cabinet handles and stained-glass door inserts to the grand fleur de lis wallpaper and carved two-sided vanity mirrors, a touch of whimsy is added to the formality of the room. With a serene, freestanding pedestal tub as its focal point, Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry set out to create an elegant and inviting suite. Rich cherry wood cabinetry complements the Cosmos natural stone vanity tops, both perfectly contrasting to the pale limestone finished porcelain tile flooring and shower. The clear frameless glass shower enclosure spills natural light into the room adding to the open, spacious feel.

Judges’ Comments:

This bathroom effectively utilizes the large space while the warmth of the wood tones keeps it a cozy escape. The grand, walk-in shower is perfectly placed in the bay allowing natural light to fill the shower and bathroom. Placing the vanities back to back in the middle of the room breaks up the open floor space.

Horizontal elements, such as the dark beamed ceiling, wood-patterned ceramic tile floor panelling and a floating vanity, extend the visual floor area and perception of space. A side entry door-less shower featuring a “drying off area,” keeps the bathroom clean and airy. Functional Embassy green painted cabinets positioned at the ends of each vanity double the storage in the bathroom, making room for any supplies that otherwise may have had to be left out.

Judges’ Comments:

This small bathroom appears larger with the inclusion of the floating vanity. The glass-walled shower keeps the room open. Triple mirrors along the vanity wall break up the space nicely. The maximized storage is an added benefit, and the tall cabinets blend well with the wall space causing them to nearly disappear.

room with a view After completing an addition on their 1939 Dutch colonial, the homeowners were interested in creating an outdoor shower, but the Midwest climate and their urban neighborhood made it unrealistic. Instead of abandoning their plan, they brought the outdoors in with a beautiful master bath retreat. Although long and narrow, Lisa LeMasters, Architect, was able to add additional width to the space by creating a cantilevered bay, which houses a custom African mahogany tub deck. The rich, wood deck was built to windowsill height to provide the perfect horizontal sightline into the lush trees. A fully tiled walk-in shower offers another clear view of the outdoors. In order to accommodate a double vanity, the homeowners designed and custom built the tub deck and vanity with gently curving shapes to provide ample space for circulation. The master retreat seamlessly complements the style of the home with the finishes carefully selected to blend with the home’s historical architecture. Judges’ Comments:

This bathroom has a nice flow to it, aided by the curves of the vanity and tub. An easy to enter tub placed in the bay creatively integrates the outdoors into the space. The placement of the toilet in a separate water closet is smart. It allows for privacy and does not take away from the design.

ollowing a 19-year executive career in commercial design and creative strategy with some of the nation’s best-known furniture manufacturers, Robert Idol decided to relocate from Atlanta two years ago. Now established in St. Louis as Idol Design, he has a residential and commercial clientele that ranges from coast to coast and all the way to China. “I’m a big city boy, and St. Louis has a big city feel,” says Robert, explaining his move to the Midwest. He was ultimately lured to the Central West End by its dynamic character and gracious residences. His home buying “must-haves” were minimal, but specific – plenty of wall space for his artwork and a south garden. Although dated, a four-story townhome caught his eye and met the basic qualifications. “It hadn’t been updated since 1978, but I liked the spatial flow, and the ‘bones’ were there,” he remembers, adding, “My forte has always been space planning and retrofitting.” Now totally renovated, the home has been transformed into a sophisticated showplace for Robert’s vast art collection and his unique approach to interior design. Respecting the fact that clients have a budget, Robert counsels them to take their time when making design selections. A rather startling suggestion he often makes when working with new residential clients is to open their closets. “My first task is to help you define your ‘DNA,’” he maintains. “And what says more about who you are than your closet?” He readily admits that his own “design DNA” is characterized by his passion for original art – not only the work of well-known artists and artisans, but any piece he finds unusually beautiful or intriguing and evokes an emotional response. True to form, his entire home has been totally designed around his treasured collection. From the entry foyer, the first thing most guests notice is the striking, large, mixed-medium photography piece that dominates a full wall of the formal dining room. “Bench,” by artist Todd Murphy, is definitely a conversation piece. “For visual impact, I opened the foyer wall, creating an 8-foot doorway to the dining room, and added crown molding and trim,” Robert notes. Focusing on shape and form, he positioned a hand-blown Venetian glass chandelier above the circular dining table, made of polished bone from South America. Regency-style rosewood chairs, purchased at an estate sale and recovered in leather, and a reproduction of a 2nd-century Roman sculpture reinforce the room’s neo-classical ambience. Completely gutted and rearranged, the townhome's kitchen exemplifies one of Robert's signature techniques – synthesizing the old with the new. “It’s a small space, and I wanted it to be simple, but dramatic,” Robert says. Gleaming stainless countertops blend seamlessly with a Bertazzoni range, stainless Best hood and glass-door Sub-Zero refrigerator. The existing oak floor was refinished with an ebony/coffee stain, then rubbed back to show the grain. Coffee-toned cabinetry and stainless stirrup pulls repeat the theme, and an unobtrusive backsplash pattern adds interest while maintaining spatial balance.

In the gathering room, vintage ram’s-head klismos chairs and a Robjohns-Gibbons saber leg chair, with its original leather webbing, complement “The Morning Toilette” by German artist Stephanus Heidacker. At the left is a chest designed by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair and refinished to add the gold octagons.

Left: Based on a photograph, Todd Murphy’s “Bench” is starkly rendered on both sides of a a 6-foot by 7-foot sheet of acrylic, giving the piece extraordinary depth. Bronze lion heads tip the arms of Regency chairs surrounding the polished bone dining table, and a Moorish tile-patterned rug unifies the elements. Above: Functional and light-reflective, stainless countertops and appliances maximize the sense of space in the kitchen, and a simple backsplash pattern adds visual interest.

The adjacent butler’s pantry continues the motif with the same dark cabinets and backsplash pattern behind the wet bar, but substitutes a marble countertop and moves the stainless steel to overhead shelving. “It’s all about understanding your materials,” Robert observes. Also on the main level, the gathering room displays a wondrous array of tastefully arranged artwork, including a large, tactile figurative canvas by German artist Stephanus Heidacker. Originally mirrored, the existing marble fireplace surround was retained, then framed with pencil molding for what Robert calls “a contemporary version of a raised-panel treatment.” Over the fireplace hangs an oil painting by Charles Keiger. “I wanted a 1940s vibe in this space,” says Robert, an effect he achieved with a tufted Baker Paris sofa in bronze velvet, various saber leg chairs, armchairs designed by a friend and colleague for Thomasville, a Donghia Paris table, an Eastlake Biedermeier chest inlaid with ivory and a zebra rug. Other noteworthy items in the gathering room include a tripod floor lamp with goatskin shade, designed by Robert himself; a small African stool; and his first “good” art purchase, an abstract painting by Jeff Long. New 8-foot doors, in a bronze tone and fitted with oil-rubbed bronze

hardware, lead to the garden, which was originally landscaped by Moynihan & Associates. A work in progress, refurbishing the garden is Robert’s “next big project.” On the second-story privacy level, striated carpeting with a handcrafted, loomed look blankets the floors. Another of Robert’s designs – a cherry sideboard inspired by a French floor screen and featuring antique mirrors and chrome rings – is the focal point of the gallery. Artfully arranged on the sideboard are a collection of heart fossils and a 105-year-old egg basket, made by a freed slave and purchased for Robert’s grandmother when she was a child. More precious memories are preserved in the sitting room, which displays a collage of 12 framed leaves (the owner’s 9th-grade science project) above the linen sofa and a mirrored cabinet designed by Robert for a Lane collection. In fact, virtually every piece in this room is artistically singular, from the hemp-weave table to the Donghia zebra-hide chair, granite-topped American Empire table, Guatemalan carnival mask, ceramic drum side table and an etching by Bruce Botts. The spacious master bedroom further illustrates Robert’s affinity for texture and his desire to keep his artwork “within reach.” Surrounding the iron canopy bed are a Venetian crystal lamp, Biedermeier chest, STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM AUGUST 2012

ceramic garden stools, two sensitive portraits of Oriental women, photos by Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts and a classical pastel by Larry Jens Anderson. The basic structure of the master bath remained intact, including the travertine marble and step-up tub, but Robert added cove lighting, rich wood cabinetry, marble countertops, horizontal striae on the walls, mosaic tile flooring and “a piece of whimsy” over the tub – a colorful framed silk scarf by Paloma Picasso. The townhome’s top floor has a dramatic view of the Cathedral Basilica and is an inspirational setting for Robert’s studio, which displays his design awards and still more of his artwork. The lower level provides a second bedroom suite, where he shares his art-filled lifestyle with houseguests. The bed, designed by Thomas O’Brien for an early Hickory Chair collection, is flanked by rosewood side tables in a sunburst pattern and topped by leather and chrome lamps. Two paintings, “Reclining Nude” by Atlanta artist Felice Sharp and “Study in Red,” add vibrant color to the space. A testament to artful living, Robert’s newly transformed townhome offers tremendous insight into his personality, creativity and professional talent. With a mischievous smile, he quips, “Art is an addiction but, fortunately, one that’s legal.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Top: Collage of 12-framed leaves, from Robert's 9th grade science project, are displayed in the sitting room. Foliage Foundation Growing a gorgeous garden of interesting shrubs and multi-hued foliage, the homeowner has achieved a lush landscape By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim dillon

ecky Kridel loves shrubs. When it comes to a choice between flowers and foliage, she’ll take the foliage, thank you. Becky has so expertly woven together a combination of interesting shrubs and lush, multi-hued foliage that the Missouri Botanical Garden took notice a year ago and placed her Kirkwood garden on its once-every-three-year garden tour. Calling it a garden of “textures and forms, shrubs and greenery,” Becky has made the choice for what she calls a more “sustainable and economical” landscape that “always looks great. Shrubs frame a house,” she notes. The emphasis on shrubs and perennials with interesting foliage also allows Becky to care for the garden herself with an occasional assist from her husband, Don. A case on point is her use of boxwood, which she calls her favorite shrub. There are triangular boxwoods in the containers that flank the front door of her 100-year-old, stone home. Planted in the ground, rounded boxwoods march in staggered, double lines to the north and south until they join the tall hollies that soften the corners of the residence. A squared-off boxwood hedge runs along the back of the home, and rounded mounds of boxwood mark the pathway from the wood deck to the flagstone-faced swimming pool and hot tub. Boxwood-filled planters frame each side of the stone garage. They are “green and clean,” Becky says of the easily pruned, shade-tolerant, evergreen shrubs. “I’d have more of them if I had the space.” With her sturdy boxwoods as a backdrop, Becky also enjoys experimenting with new-to-the-market shrubs and foliage-forward perennials that might fly under the radar of less experienced gardeners. She is currently in the perfect place to make such finds. Since retiring as a teacher five years ago, Becky has worked at Kirkwood’s Sugar Creek Gardens, known for its supply of basic plants, new introductions and hard-to-find perennials and annuals. The job came as a result of her long-time friendship with Sugar Creek owner Ann Lapides that began when their children were young and became friends. “I have gardening in my genes,” Becky says laughing. “My grandfathers

were Scottish and English, and they were real gardeners. One was a bulb expert and the other had a true English garden. I always remember him asking me to look at his clematis. My sister is a wonderful gardener and all my friends are gardeners. But when Ann asked me to come work for her, I didn’t think I knew enough.” What she discovered when she began working on a trial basis, Becky relates, was that her co-workers all had different areas of expertise and, as well as sharing her knowledge, she learned from her colleagues and even from customers. “I love going to work,” she says with a smile. In addition to relying on boxwood, Becky has added a number of recently introduced hydrangeas to her garden. All should be planted in partial shade.

Becky's favorite Hydrangeas “Bombshell”: a dwarf, 2-3 foot plant that explodes with a “bombshell” of white flowers from mid-summer to fall. “Midnight Duchess”: purplish black stems highlight the 4-6 foot tall plant with mauve-pink, lace-cap blossoms; sets blossoms in fall on current season’s wood; plant in a protected area, and don’t prune in fall “Twist-n-Shout”: a lace-cap hydrangea that is part of the Endless Summer series; repeat bloomer on both old and new wood; pink or blue blossoms depending upon soil; deep red fall color; 3-5 feet tall and wide. “Lady in Red”: red stems and red veining on leaves; pink lacecap flowers mature to burgundy; leaves turn deep red in fall; 3-5 feet tall and wide. “Incrediball”: massive white blossoms top sturdy stems on a 4-5 foot plant; blooms on new wood so can be cut back in fall. “Paris”: part of the new Cityline series of dwarf hydrangeas; large fuchsia blossoms on sturdy stems; 1-3 feet tall and wide.

Plants that add texture and color to Becky's garden Gardenia ‘Crown Jewel’: First hardy gardenia for this area; glossy green foliage; richly scented white blossoms that could be made into a prom corsage. Lamb’s ear: Fuzzy, low-growing gray foliage used for texture and as an edging for beds; particularly pretty backed by purpleflowering lavender. Heuchera: Grown for fan-shaped foliage that comes in bright colors that include orange, gold, hot pink and purple (who needs flowers?); likes partial shade. St. John’s wort: botanical name for this yellow-flowering, usually shrubby plant is Hypericum. Becky favors the semi-evergreen, ground cover variety Hypericum calycinum with oval leaves that can turn almost gold in the sun. Hellebores: more commonly known as Lenten rose; shadeloving, evergreen plants with umbrella-like foliage and softly colored, rose-like flowers that start blooming in late winter and last until June. Snow-on-the-mountain/bishop’s weed / goutweed: Known by many names; vigorous (sometimes invasive) ground cover has soft green leaves edged in white. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Flower Power One thing is certain...a flower bath is fun and refreshing. By Catherine Thoele, AIFD, CFD PhotographY by Colin MILLER/Strauss peyton

Over the years, different variations of the flower bath have surfaced and transcended various cultures. Today, the wonderful experience of a flower bath can be enjoyed without having to think about tradition or ritual. And you don’t have to travel to an elite Asian spa resort to find one. To create your own bath, use only fresh cut flowers. There is little to no healing energy in dried or dying flowers. Use the fresh flowers growing in your yard – if they are clean and free of insects and pesticides – or order some loose stems of colorful flowers from your local florist and have them delivered to your door. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners advise that you place the whole flower into your bath, or pull off all the petals and place them into the water. Some flower bath proponents recommend floating your flowers in a vessel of water outside in the sun for a few hours until they just barely begin to wilt and then transfer them to your bath water. Others simply place the flowers and/or petals directly into the warm bath without soaking them in the sun at all. As the warm temperature of the bath water expands the pores, the medicinal properties of the flowers gradually infiltrate the body and help regulate blood circulation. The bath also helps promote healthy energy flow inside the body. Simultaneously, the olfactory cells introduce the fragrances into the body's systems, influencing the limbic area of the brain, which controls our emotions. Stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and chronic insomnia are reported to diminish, resulting in a calmer state of being. No one can say for certain how powerful fresh flowers truly are, but it is safe to say that man has likely been using flowers medicinally for as long as we have existed. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Shot on location at Premier Plumbing Studio

Crafts, Chores and Cheer An activity center makes even the mundane of everyday life organized and efficient.

By Katie O’Connor PhotographY by anne matheis Styling by Dottie Eaton

A place for everything, and everything in its place, or so the saying goes. But somewhere along the line, someone decided that the place for such utilitarian things as laundry and wrapping gifts was not to be pretty. Washers and dryers were relegated to closets or basements, while craft projects had to carve out space on countertops or tables. But developers Fred and Mary Bruning of Bruning Homes disagree. The couple’s latest inventory home in Town & Country features a bright, multipurpose room—dubbed the activity center—specifically designed for tackling chores and projects. Located near the kitchen and connected to a rear hallway lined with footlockers and cubby holes, it is part of a suite of space that makes even the mundane of everyday life organized, efficient—and cheerful. Together with Cindie Queener of RSI Kitchen & Bath, Mary designed the white laminate cabinets to offer plenty of storage for laundry supplies, vases and crafts, including drawers wide enough to hold rolls of wrapping paper. A sink allows for flower arranging or watercolor mixing, while a built-in desk under the window provides a cheerful spot for homework. The center island’s wide countertop lends itself to projects that require room to spread out.

50

“You can just leave a project and close the door—you don’t have to clean off the dining room table or kitchen counter at the end of the day,” says Mary, who first heard of such a space at an International Home Builders Association seminar a few years ago. “It really appealed to me because, with kids and as someone who has always done lots of projects, I never had such a space.” But the room goes beyond functional, its white cabinets, pale creamy walls and large window create a bright and sunny atmosphere. (On rainy days, plenty of recessed lighting and a contemporary pendant lamp over the center island stand in for sunlight and ensure proper task lighting.) Pale Corian countertops and porcelain tile floors add to the room’s lightness—and make for easy cleanup of art scraps. Wainscoting and beadboard add a whimisical touch to the island and the walls. The couple has included such a room in every spec house they’ve done since Mary first discovered the concept, and it’s proved to be a popular feature. “Families, families that don’t have children, even single men—everyone says, ‘Wow, I could really use this space,’” says Mary. Where Inches Count Taking their master bath from past to present, the homeowners create a sophisticated space exclusively for them. BY MELISSA MAUZY PhotographY by anne matheis

Entering their master bathroom each morning, the owners of this charming home came face to face with the past. From the peach and gray tile to the flamingo shower door, their 1950s bathroom was in need of a facelift, not only cosmetically but foundationally as well. With the help of Amy Herman, Gateway Interior Design, Inc., this 47-square-foot master bath was stripped to the studs and rebuilt into a sophisticated and modern space just for them. After finalizing the plans Amy had drawn up, demolition began. All of the drywall was removed from the bathroom as well as the soffit above the shower. The cast iron stack was replaced with a new plumbing stack, and proper ventilation was put in to eliminate mold problems. Although the layout of the bathroom stayed the same, Amy was able to maximize storage, update lighting and open up the cave-like shower giving the room a larger appearance. A pocket door and carefully placed accessories such as a towel bar and toilet paper holder also helped to keep the bathroom from feeling crowded. “By removing the old plaster walls and soffit, we added inches to the bathroom,” Amy says. “While it doesn’t seem like much, a few inches makes a big difference in a bathroom.” Cosmetically, the updated bath now features an eye-catching vanity tile backsplash that draws you into the room. The focal point is the inset mirror, trimmed by tantrum tile on vihara glass tile by Sonoma. Inspired by a similar concept Amy saw in a magazine, she chose materials and colors that complemented the rest of the house. Blue tones and natural stone found in the homeowners’ kitchen carry into the master bath for a consistent look. The homeowners worked closely with Amy to play an integral role in the

52

design and material selection. After finding the perfect hexagon-shaped floor tiles that were too expensive, Amy was receptive to finding something more reasonably priced. In the end they chose a herringbone tile in the same color that ended up being an even better choice. “We chose to work with Amy because we knew we needed someone to help us make decorator choices,” the homeowner says. “She not only helped us with choices, but she also managed our contractors, which can be quite a challenge. It was nice to call Amy and let her handle any issue that might arise.” One major design decision was the blending of the ivory coast Silestone countertop into the windowsill. By continuing the countertop into the sill in a seamless transition, the homeowners gained extended counter space while preserving the look of the bathroom. You don’t have to completely change the layout of your bathroom to transform it into the space of your dreams. By removing old elements and selecting modern colors and materials, the homeowners were able to take their master bath from the past to the present, creating a space exclusively for them. SUMMERING ON “THE FARM” – IN CHIANTI The Nistri family pairs perfectly grilled steaks with their Tenutadi Vignole wines. BY Lorraine Raguseo PhotographY COURTESY OF Quintessential Wines

Right in the heart of Tuscany’s famed Chianti region, known as the “Concad’Oro” or “golden center," just a few minutes outside the well-known town of Panzano, are the vineyards and winery of Tenutadi Vignole. Owned by the Nistri family, who have been making fine Italian wines since 1865, it is the site of a group of traditional Tuscan farm houses and buildings that date back to 1500. They have been lovingly updated in the past few years to continue to honor the wine-making family’s heritage while keeping up with modern-day comforts. Brothers Massimo and Fabrizio have been instrumental in renovating the bucolic property. The 14th century stone barn has been turned into the Estate’s modest, but modern, winery. A matching small stone house on the property is now the winery’s “cellar door” tasting room with space for small parties and meetings. And, the house that their mother lived in is now the family’s summer house, where they enjoy living in traditional Tuscan Country style among the vineyards. Like summer house-dwellers in much of the world, grilling is a highlight of their time on “the farm” as they call it. But the Nistri brothers are not making “just any old barbecue.” As anyone who has ever visited Florence or anyone who has been to an authentic Florentine restaurant can tell you, one of the culinary highlights in this Italian cultural capital is digging into a perfectly grilled Florentine steak with fresh vegetables and a glass of elegant Chianti. That sentiment extends to Fabrizio’s cooking. Employing the same care and attention that his brother does in making their award-winning

56

Chianti Classico and Riserva wines, Fabrizio uses simple, time-honored seasonings to prepare thick, center-cut rib-eye steaks…garlic cloves rubbed over the meat and bones, then a sprinkling of sea salt and fresh, ground pepper. After an hour or so of refrigeration, the seasoned steaks are brought up to room temperature, which takes about 20 minutes, and then placed over the embers of a hot fire. A special feature of old Tuscan farmhouses is the presence of an open, wood-burning fireplace, still quite suitable for cooking. It is into this picturesque fireplace in the large, airy kitchen/ dining area filled with antique Florentine dark-wood furniture, matching mirrors and family photos, that the steaks are cooked to the desired temperature (about 7 minutes per side for medium-rare), flipped once and then removed from the grill. About ten minutes later, Fabrizio is slicing the steaks, drizzling them with lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil produced from the olives of a neighbor’s grove and serving them to his brother, who has chosen the Tenuta di Vignole Chianti Classico 2008 as the perfect accompaniment. Crusty, just-baked Italian bread, to soak up the steak’s juice, and a medley of freshly picked bell peppers, zucchini, cremini mushrooms and yellow squash, brushed with the aforementioned olive oil and grilled until cooked-through…it’s the perfect way to while away the evening as the summer Tuscan sun sinks slowly below the vine-covered hill of Tenuta di Vignole. slhl SPOT LIGHT A sauna or steam shower can make a great addition to your home By christine Soucy Photography Courtesy of Saunatec, Inc.

Feel the steam surround your body, pulling out the tension of the day. Let the calming and revitalizing experience of a sauna draw you into the lap of luxury. Along with a sauna’s close relationship with relaxation and indulgence, it has a plethora of health benefits. The steam releases tension in the muscles, improves the circulatory system and pulls toxins out of the body. Freed from the day’s pressures and obligations, you will leave the sauna feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The sauna is an intriguing feature in many gyms, but the fear of who came before may make all of the sauna’s benefits seem a little less appealing. Home saunas and steam showers are becoming more and more common. They allow for relaxation and detoxification in the comfort and privacy of home, without the strangers and drive to the gym. The addition of aromatherapy is said to bring that little something extra to the sauna. Different oils and scents have a variety of functions and appeals. Eucalyptus is good for colds and helps clear the sinuses, while jasmine helps with headaches, anxiety and tension. The scented oils will help set the relaxation mood and bring you to your happy place. Saunas have been an integral part of daily life for centuries in Finland and elsewhere. For its population of 5.3 million, there are an estimated two million saunas in Finland. The Fins and their 2,000 -year-old tradition just might have it right. Adding a sauna or steam shower into your own home is easier than you might think. Many saunas come ready to assemble and can be fully functional in one weekend. A steam shower can upgrade your current shower, as it can also be used for a typical shower. The relaxing qualities of the sauna and steam will lull you into absolute content with your decision. So go ahead, get steamy! See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Haute Hats

The World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park was brimming with style on June 7 when more than 1,100 guests in chic, imaginative hats attended the Forest Park Forever’s Leffingwell Awards “Hat” Luncheon. The only thing more stunning than the hats was St. Louis’ cherished gem, Forest Park. The 22nd annual luncheon raised more than $340,000 for the historic park. Funds will be used for maintenance and educational programs. Sue McCollum and the late Todd Epsten were honored for their commitment to preserving the park. Prizes were given for the best whimsical, romantic, vintage, couture and group hats.
