Meet our esteemed panel of Baths of the Year judges

This year’s award-winning baths prove that design doesn’t have to compromise functionally to let personal style shine.

Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton On location at Immerse.

Michael Cyr, Associate Principal at FORNEY + architecture

"The ultimate luxury is being able to relax and enjoy your home." — Jeff Lincoln Resort living at home has become a super hot priority for many homeowners these days. Most of us think we have to go out of town to find the serenity we seek. But, if we truly evaluate the many indulgences we admire at our favorite hotels, we discover we can create that same feeling of luxury at home. Garrison Salinas, designer and principal of Garrison LTD worked with a team of professionals, including Lori Fumagalli, principal of Fumagalli & Lamp Inc, builder Peter Hennessey, president of Hennessey Development and Keith Gegg of Gegg Design & Cabinetry, to produce a home that reflected style, luxury and peace. Not only did the homeowners want to live in their new home forever, but they yearned for the feeling that they were on vacation every day! Every selection the team made required low-maintenance materials and smart technology to simplify the homeowners' lives (pages 30-37). A newly designed and built 12,000-plus-square-foot French country chateau in one of St. Louis's most elegant neighborhoods is the perfect place for friends and family to drop by. The home couldn't be more ideal for entertaining, and the warmth it exudes is enthralling. Robert Srote, architect of Srote & Co, along with team Tegethoff of Tegethoff Homes, just raised the bar for resort living at home! (pages 38-47). Pools, spas, outdoor showers and Award-Winning Baths (pages 19-29) are spilling over the pages in this issue; they all bring about a feeling of peace in this otherwise crazy world we live in. Enjoy!

slhl ARTIST

Drawing from Flora and Fauna An artist finds success while discovering nature. By Gina Parsons Photography by Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton

While growing up, Manchester artist Laura Lebeda hiked for miles in the woods behind her house. “The exploration and freedom of that gave me a respect and love of the outdoors. I remember in our yard watching in awe at the large lilac bush covered with Monarch butterflies,” she says. Now, Laura hopes that seeing her award-winning artwork will encourage people to explore and think about the strength, fragility and beauty of the natural world. Laura has been an artist all her life, using a plethora of different art mediums through the years. She especially enjoyed drawing, but struggled with her own perceptions. “I kept thinking that drawing wasn’t a valid art form. It was like the prototype before you paint or create a sculpture,” she says. “It took me a while to realize drawing was very valid.”

14

AUGUST 2022 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

That realization arose in a series of figure drawing classes taken during her final semester for her Master of Fine Arts degree. She used charcoal to create a large detailed drawing of a hosta bloom with a bumble bee getting nectar—drawn from a photo of her beloved late grandmother’s hosta. That led to the “Pollinator Series”—large-scale charcoal drawings of monarch butterflies, and next, she drew the “Migration Series,” focusing on hummingbirds. She followed with other series focusing on wildlife. Laura began submitting her drawings to some of the large St. Louis-area art fairs. “I was surprised and happy when I was accepted into them, and doing well with them, and it was drawing,” she says. “My first love ended up being what I could focus on.” She researches the animals she draws, and integrates educational text and journal writing into many of the drawings. For each drawing, she completes the animal’s eyes last—adding the iris, the pupil and the highlight. She wants to capture the impression of the eyes. On the rest of the drawing, she works to let go, “so it stays really loose and the mark making is very spontaneous,” she says. “I don’t want to get them too realistic. I like to show the motion, or the feeling of what the motion is—the energy of the little animal.” Through her artwork, Laura invites viewers to look closer and see the sacred in their everyday lives. She loves the idea of “giving back” and how nature is cyclical, and we are all parts of the “whole.” “I hope seeing my artwork alleviates any stress and gives viewers a moment of peace,” she says. “I do notice that when people walk in at a fair or at the gallery, they kind of take a breath and pause and sigh.” In addition to her drawings, Laura also has created 3D pieces inspired by nature. You may view and purchase Laura’s artwork at art fairs and galleries, mostly in the region, plus on her website. Personal Favorite Honestly, what I love most about my job is meeting people. I love being part of their life for a moment, learning about their families and designing spaces that reflect who they are and how they live. And there is nothing more rewarding than the honor of a referral. Elevating Design One way to elevate a vanity design is through selection of a higher-end wood species and making thoughtful cabinet construction choices. Homeowners often love the look of walnut but the grain on a walnut veneer lacks the dramatic character available in the solid walnut slab door style. Additionally, we can use a frameless cabinet for smaller reveals (openings between drawers) and within each drawer we can specify a U-shaped cut-out to accommodate plumbing and a tiered drawer system within. Keeping Current I’m currently doing more contemporary cabinet designs than ever in my career. Many of my clients are looking to simplify and are drawn to cleaner lines. I’m seeing a trend toward more floating vanities as well as a preference for drawers rather than doors—much as we see in kitchens.

White Everywhere While white undoubtedly is the most predominant bathroom color, and will likely remain so, it’s worth noting that our clients often opt to specify custom paint colors for their cabinets rather than the whites offered by our cabinet lines. Among the most popular are Chantilly Lace, Alabaster, Greek Villa and Bright White. Choosing Updates Bathrooms originally designed over 10 to 15 years ago may still have a 30-inch-tall vanity. A move to a higher 34.5 inch vanity, which some consider a comfortable height, will make a dramatic difference. Homeowners might also consider a change to a furniture-style vanity over a standard vanity. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

PLATINUM WINNER WINNER

Under 100 square feet

Castle Design & Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry Why the judges love it: The tile work in this bathroom is spectacular! We like the built-in mirrors and the way the designers laid the trim and backsplash into the vanity. The textured wallpaper really stands out.

Castle Design and Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry worked together to take a 91-square-foot primary bathroom down to the studs. The goal was to create a fresh, open and restful space in the 80-year-old home. The intricate white marble mosaic floor serves as the foundation for the peaceful, classic retreat. Detailed custom white cabinetry, large wall mirrors and enhanced lighting make the space appear visually larger. A corner cabinet with classic mirrored mullions is a pretty place to store bathroom necessities. The original bathtub was removed and replaced with a large walk-in shower with aging in place considerations. Floral grasscloth wallpaper adds texture to the bath resulting in an overall soothing, spa-like ambiance. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

PLATINUM WINNER 100-150 square feet

Castle Design & Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry

Why the judges love it: The contrast and delicate colors used really work in the space. The trim helps make everything feel more integrated. We love the different textures and the window treatment.

This newly renovated bath was designed to celebrate the classic architectural details of the home. Arched soffits in the original layout segmented the bath into three areas. Further challenging the design team, a hall door divided the vanity space and led to an adjoining bedroom, which made the primary bath feel less private. Castle Design and Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry reimagined the bath as one large open room highlighting the tall ceilings and making the space feel grand again. The team expanded the vanity area and created a larger adjoining closet space by moving the door location and closing off the hall entrance. A bulky built-in tub was removed and replaced with a freestanding tub placed on an angle. Traditional details such as the raised-panel doors and detailed

moldings blend with modern amenities like the oversized medicine cabinets and full-height glass shower surround. The tile, which is a mix of white marble with intricate polished blue stone mosaics, set the color palette for the bath. A calming color story is expertly incorporated throughout the project in the soft gray-blue vanity and window treatments. Polished nickel finishes give a time-honored appeal. The plumbing fixtures are a nod to the elegance and glamour of an earlier era. Finally, sconces from Waterworks feature crystal detailing, which is repeated in the cabinetry hardware. AUGUST 2022 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Why the judges love it: The shower bench is spectacular. We love the towel holder and window treatments the designer chose for the space.

Acting as designers and contractors, Temple and Hentz remodeled this dated primary bathroom to make a more user-friendly layout. The old space included a large built-in Jacuzzi tub and shower enclosed with a glass block surround. The homeowner’s main request was more usable square footage, a freestanding tub and a larger, more functional shower. The client’s aesthetic is more modern, so the designers worked to incorporate clean and sleek materials that complemented their love of modern finishes. Custom wall-mounted vanities feature a mitered quartz waterfall panel. Polished nickel fixtures create a modern yet timeless feel to the space. Kelly Wearstler sconces mounted to custom glass keeps the room feeling open and airy. The focal point of the new shower is a layered backlit stone quartz. Large-format porcelain tiles create the clean, maintenance-friendly floor and shower surrounding the client requested. The custom floating shower bench in teak adds another special touch while incorporating natural materials to the modern space. A custom-made Roman shade and the smokey crystal chandelier above the bathtub create an oasis that the homeowners love walking into every morning. See stlouishomesmag. com for resources. GOLD WINNER Under 100 square feet

Castle Design & Wise Works Why the judges love it: The vanity is what sets this bathroom apart. We love how the designers updated it. The hardware and mirrors are visually interesting.

This 54-square-foot powder room was part of an extensive first floor renovation in Ladue. The original powder room was heavy in color and materials and needed updating. The existing vanity was a short black cabinet with a green marble top, and the room was painted red with a green ceiling. The client asked designers Castle Design and Wise Works to keep the powder room’s existing vanity and brass plumbing fixtures as elements in the new space. The designers selected large-scale elements to create a visually appealing, playful and bright room. An oversized floral wallpaper from Thibaut steals the show and provides a backdrop to stage the large design elements. A new Chinoiserie mirror gives the room an open feeling and radiates the natural light back into the front hall. Clean and understated bamboo-themed mirrored sconces provide additional light and style to the room. The vanity was redesigned to act as a showpiece by raising the height, painting it blue and adding oversized and layered cabinetry hardware. A square detail was added to the vanity top edges tying into the overall design. A complementary painted ceiling brings the eye up giving the powder room height. Simple and handsome window treatments finish the space. See stlouishomesmag. com for resources. Photography by Alise O’Brien Photography.

GOLD WINNER 100-150 square feet

Chelsea Design Company Why the judges love it: Using different sizes of tile with the chevron pattern on the bathroom floor was a very effective design. We like the shower windows and the natural light they provide to the space.

Chelsea Design Company gave two hardworking business owners a spa-like bathroom to use as their escape with plenty of hidden storage. Double doors leading into the bathroom were removed to give space for a new vanity where a shower once was. The changes allowed for two separate vanity spaces with large matching wood-framed mirrors and a tall linen cabinet with hidden open shelving for easily accessible storage to keep the countertops clean. Simple, dark vertical grain walnut vanities are paired with neutral Cambria countertops and a small travertine mosaic backsplash. The designer kept the palette calming and neutral while playing with pattern and textures for some interest. A corner tub, soffit and columns were removed to create the large walk-in shower. An engineer was involved to have a seamless transition with no curb into the shower. After removing the tub soffit, the room was left with a dramatic angled ceiling. The designer installed 12” x 18” Carrara marble tile vertically with a rain shower head to accentuate it. Chevron travertine and marble mosaic floor tile is slip resistant and connects the bathroom with the shower space. The corner faux glass block windows were replaced with clear glass panels. The designer applied an opaque film at the same height as the knee wall to give just enough privacy without losing the view or sunlight. See stlouishomesmag.com for resources. Castle Design and R.G. Apel Development

Every design decision in this spectacular home was made with multigenerational living in mind. The goal was to create a beautiful, high-end residence that allowed for comfort, independence and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Designers Castle Design and R.G. Apel Development blended beauty with purpose in this 190-square-foot bathroom embracing a contemporary, yet warm, soothing aesthetic. The cabinetry features easy-open push control doors and finger pull drawers. A diamond-shaped tile in olive green with charcoal grout plays well with the wall color and adds interest on either side of the vanity mirrors and contemporary LED sconces. The designer dropped the mirrors all the way to the warm white quart countertop to accommodate the sight line of a wheelchair user or child. Dark gray porcelain tile with subtle white veining is not only striking but a practical choice

to camouflage scuff marks from wheelchair tires. A freestanding tub features faucets at the front right corner instead of the back of the tub making it easy to manipulate. The designer chose a stunning wallcovering in shades of white, gray, blue and beige, which mimic the hues in the rest of the space and bring to mind soothing colors of the beach, sky and mountains. GOLD WINNER

More than 200 square feet

Chelsea Design Company Why the judges love it: The designer was successful in keeping the renovation true to the history of the home. We love the shape of the backsplash and tub plus the walnut and gold accents.

The client’s only requirement for the remodel of their 232-square-foot bath was that it was clean and modern while staying true to the history of their home. The existing layout was confusing and dated. Designer Chelsea Design Company created a new functional layout to give the homeowners a walk-in closet, freestanding tub, two vanities, a spa-like shower and private water closet. A custom built-in natural walnut cabinet houses deep lower drawers for linens and smaller storage at the top for personal items such as watches and jewelry. The central location of the tub remained, but the tub was upgraded to a modern freestanding tub with a wall-mounted tub filler and hand shower that felt true to the home’s construction. The designer flanked the tub with two freestanding natural walnuts vanities with drawer storage, period-looking swivel mirrors and wall-mounted spouts for optimal counter space. Calacatta Monaco countertops were selected for easy maintenance and custom back and side swooped splashes were designed to reference the era of the home. To accent this wall of function, the designer chose a brick-laid faux marble porcelain tile wall. The shower was moved to an exterior wall. Moving the shower created a challenge of having to angle the entry to accommodate a window for natural light, but the design decision ultimately created an interesting feature. The shower includes a rain shower head and hand shower on a sliding bar for a luxurious shower experience. A shower seat in the same material as the countertop as the vanities and porcelain wall tiles paired with a Carrara marble hex floor tile to create cohesion within the spaces. s we move through new life challenges and protocalls, our wants and needs often change. So it was for the owners of this stunning yet quiet and elegant home in Ladue. The couple previously lived in a much larger, more traditionally styled home. “It was an incredible house,” says Garrison Salinas, designer and principal of Garrison LTD, who had managed a significant expansion and pool restoration at the previous home. At 15,000 square feet and sited on three acres, however, the property required significant maintenance, which could be tiresome for the couple, who are business owners and avid travelers. As they were starting the next phase of life, the couple became interested in simplifying their lifestyle while still feeling as if they were on vacation every day. “The husband in particular was interested in building a new house in a manner where they could live there forever,” says Garrison. “He also wanted to make it a Smart Home, not just in technology but also by selecting materials that would be less stress, like indoor/outdoor fabrics and low-maintenance, commercial-level materials where you can entertain at a moment’s notice.” A team of professionals that included architect Lori Fumagalli, principal of Fumagalli & Lampe, Inc., builder Peter Hennessey, president of Hennessey Development, Keith Gegg of Gegg Design & Cabinetry and Garrison set to work to design, build and appoint a modern home exuding warmth for comfortable, easy living. Fumagalli says the couple’s inspiration photos reminded

her of European, Old World styling. “Very simple lines, no frilly architectural details,” Fumagalli notes. They favored simple lines with fewer architectural details to create perfect scale. Their Colorado home, with considerable light flowing in and views of the outdoors spaces, also drove the design to include the exterior in almost every room. The team gave great attention to every detail. The kitchen space, for example, is visible from the great room. “They didn’t want the kitchen to feel dominate to the space,” says Gegg, who designed cabinetry with a clean white finish accented with a mid-tone rift white oak and horizontal grain center panels for a more contemporary feel. The island, hood and refrigerators were all constructed of the stained wood, while mirrored upper panels of the refrigerator fronts lighten the effect and help reflect some of the outdoor living spaces just steps away. The island, roughly 10 feet by 6 feet, seats six comfortably and is topped by a marble-like quartz, which was also utilized for the backsplash. An adjacent finished open pantry provides an additional sink, a second dishwasher, undercounter refrigerator, ample storage and in-wall water

This page: “This wall is an inspiration born of necessity,” says Garrison. The primary bathroom’s shower is located on the other side of the wall where the bed’s headboard would be placed. Salinas designed an upholstered wall with material more than four inches thick to deaden the sound of running water. He upped the drama by covering the wall in soft gray leather. Opposite page: Floating vanities add an air of modern sophistication to the primary bathroom. “All the surfaces in this home are uncomplicated,” says Garrison. “It avoids that ornate feel.”

dispenser for refilling reusable bottles. “They are active people who are in and out a lot, and they don’t like plastic water bottles,” says Gegg. “The coffee maker, toaster oven, all the stuff you use day-to-day can be kept out on the counter in the pantry,” says Gegg. “It’s hidden but still convenient.” In the great room, wood panels from the range hood are repeated on the top portion of the fireplace. Garrison selected and installed custom sconces of gold leaf and matte black on the mantel. Elsewhere in the great room, custom upholstered pieces from A. Rudin are dressed in “fabrics that are able to withstand daily use,” says Garrison. A neutral color palette of grays, creams and whites lets the homeowners’ collection of contemporary artworks pop. A wall of windows and black-framed French doors open to a covered, outdoor living room appointed with a large TV, commercial-grade heaters and a fireplace of the same limestone and white brick used for the home’s exterior. In summer, the covered room with screens by Broadview Screens lets guests who need shade still be part of the fun happening around the pool. “Erasing the line between indoor and outdoor living is part of the success of this house,” says Garrison. “We centered the firepit outside the dining room window so that even if you are inside, you can see the flames and it’s like you are at some resort in Aspen.” Flooring throughout the main level is French white oak with an opaque finish, which was chosen to withstand potential scratches from the couple’s large dog. The primary suite, located on the main

level, includes a sitting room and office. Garrison solved a potential annoyance with a beautifully creative solution. The primary bathroom’s shower is on the other side of the wall where the bed would be situated. To mitigate the sound of running water, Garrison designed a dramatic, upholstered wall and covered it in a buttery soft, gray leather. The shower is the height of luxury, containing zero-entry floors, trough drain and dimmable light all purchased through Immerse. Thoughtful design extended to a geothermal heating and cooling system, heated floors and air scrubbers. “All of these things you can’t see help with the economics of the house, which also contributes to less stress,” Garrison observes. Fumagalli was able to give the couple the space they desired by “pushing the square footage on the second floor under the roof." That floor holds bedrooms and en suite baths for visiting adult children and other guests, plus a second-floor laundry room. “The house has a real presence the way it sits on the lot, but it doesn’t look nearly as big as it actually is,” Fumagalli says of the more than 5,000 square feet of living space above ground. “It lives large.” Hennessey also notes the home’s setting adds to the cumulative effect of the “happy” home. “It’s a very positive year-round vacation home, with plenty of light, bright colors and a cheery atmosphere,” Hennessey says. Garrison adds, “The simplicity of the design of this home is what makes this house so powerful.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

An eye-catching waterfall pool by Oasis Pools delivers a showstopping feature to the home’s exterior spaces. Opposite page: Sliding doors to the outdoor dining area provide an effortless flow from indoors to out and connect the interiors visually to the surrounding landscape. A soaring ceiling overhead lends dynamic impact and reiterates the grand proportions of this French country chateau.

It might seem impossible to construct a 12,000-plus square-foot French country chateau with an intimate feel, but this creative St. Louis design team did just that. Situated in a posh setting just minutes from the city, the elegant property needed to complement the neighborhood context while meeting the design parameters established by the homeowners. Through meticulous architectural planning by Robert Srote, AIA, NCARB, MBA, of Srote & Co., the finished home blends seamlessly with its environment via soft earth tones, natural materials and blurred transitions between indoors and out. “The homeowners were a delight to work with throughout the entire process,” says Robert. “They had a general idea of the style, exterior and interior they were after, so we listened and documented their wishes attentively. Aided by our cohesive approach to providing both architectural and interior design services, we worked in lockstep with them from project inception through the move-in date.” Srote & Co.’s exceptional programming process allows clients to convey their thoughts systematically so that no stone is left unturned during the schematic design phase. For this project, it was essential to have a formal dining space that could also accommodate a nearby, more informal after-dinner gathering. A wet bar/lounge area adjacent

to the dining room and separated by a floor-to-ceiling glass-enclosed wine room accomplished that goal. Interior designer Kathleen Grim, also of Srote & Co., collaborated closely with Robert and the homeowners to create the extensive design scheme. “The home has a casually sophisticated style,” she explains. “There is a mixture of unlikely pairings—rustic timber beams, large stone pieces with clean lines and more modern silhouettes in the furniture and lighting selections.” The Srote & Co. team also collaborated with builder Jim Tegethoff and Matthew Cerreti of Tegethoff Homes, who both became involved with the project soon after the homeowners bought the property. Jim had built a house for one of the client’s family members years ago and had established a great working relationship with them prior to this project, while Matthew added ample creativity and style to the design. “This is one of the nicest, most well-maintained neighborhoods in St. Louis,” Jim says. “The community is full of newer builds with unique and attractive architecture. These homeowners were very receptive to ideas and challenged us along with Kathleen to come up with special applications in the home.” One of the team’s most exciting challenges was to ensure each

fireplace in the home embodies a unique look and feel yet appropriately relates to the overall design. They deftly addressed this concern by using similar materials throughout and calling on Patriot Masonry for the stonework. The great room, dining room and master bedroom fireplaces are composed of cast stone surrounds and mantels, each in different tones yet in keeping with a cool, neutral palette. The hearth room and lower-level fireplaces incorporate floor-to-ceiling stones that echo the exterior stacked-stone selection. The outdoor fireplace is a mix of stacked stone with a limestone mantel. By reiterating the materials and varying the shapes, sizes and finishes, each takes on a distinctive individuality while blending with the home’s aesthetic. The ceiling selection was another surprising design element that guided the interior style. Implementing beams in the dining room, hearth room and main level hall and applying an eye-catching ceiling color for the bar, breakfast room, lower-level rooms and several bedrooms created visual interest for each space. “I love every aspect of this home and all the finishes both inside and out,” says Jim. “The owners and Kathleen have excellent taste and worked very well together. These clients were decisive and made decisions when we needed them. But, they were also creative and really looked for creativity from us. It was a great team, and I think the home reflects that.”

Opposite page: "In the great room, a pair of bookcases flanking the fireplace were designed to create a focal point that complements the scale of the room,” says interior designer Kathleen Grim of Srote & Co. “The mirror above the fireplace draws your eye upward and allows for a gorgeous reflection of the chandelier.” This page: A broad arched doorway ensures a grand entrance to the foyer, along with a stunning chandelier that hangs over a lustrous marble-topped pedestal table. Elegant twin crystal chandeliers counterbalance the dining room’s rustic ceiling beams. The floor-to-ceiling glass design of a contemporary wine room by Lamp Wine Cellars lends a modern edge to this otherwise traditional space.

For the underlying interior color palette, Kathleen created a scheme featuring soft, cool neutrals intermixed with warmth and texture from the ceiling beams, flooring and fabrics. Dramatic splashes of color—an iron ore–hued ceiling in the bar/lounge area, charcoal gray built-ins in the great room, a navy-blue wallpaper on the breakfast room ceiling—appear throughout. The neutral backdrop allows these striking contrasts to feel soothing and calm. Because the homeowners are active people who love to entertain, they wanted their home to be inviting and able to accommodate guests and large groups while remaining approachable for everyday living. As a result, the dining room is one of the first spaces you see upon entering the home—it visually draws you into the formal entertaining zone. “Here, we set the stage for the rest of the house by starting with contrasting elements,” says Kathleen. “We paired the dining room’s rustic beams with traditional crystal chandeliers. The fireplace takes on a traditional shape and

A gracefully curved turret with its bank of windows captures glorious views outside and provides an inviting lounge space between the main level bar area and dining room. The breakfast room takes on a unique identity with its dramatic navy-blue wallpapered ceiling punctuated with a sparkling beaded chandelier. A paler shade of blue wraps the master bedroom in soft serenity.

Dramatic accents continue in the master bath, where an impressive white chandelier steals the show and beautifully balances the rusticity of the ceiling beams. A generous walk-in shower and soaking tub create a spa-like ambiance.

mass, but the charcoal hue adds contrast and a modern touch. An adjacent contemporary wine room features sleek racking, LED lighting and floor-to-ceiling glass. But here, we enhanced the trim and crown molding around it to balance with the home’s transitional touches.” The hearth room offers a comfy spot for the family to gather, and the doors to the outside fully open and disappear, merging indoor and outdoor areas to create one grand entertaining space. A stone fireplace and rustic ceiling beams that accentuate the soaring ceiling height bring a cozy, casual vibe to the room. A more formal great room unites the foyer with the kitchen and the outdoor living space. The ceiling is the inverse of the dining doom—intersecting beams but made of drywall with stained wood in between. The clean lines of the beams balanced by the texture and warmth of the wood are a prominent theme throughout this home. “For the kitchen design, we needed to find ways to balance out the massive size of the island,” recalls Kathleen. “One way we did that was by combining painted and stained cabinetry. We also incorporated features that emulate large hutches—one by the hearth room entrance, the freezer/refrigerator element and a third inside the pantry visible through a glass pantry door. Other innovative accents include a mirror-finish

metal hood, an oil/spice niche behind the range, sliding pass-through windows to the grill area and a full-height countertop.” Outside, an elaborate pool area meticulously designed by Oasis Pools undoubtedly gives the home its WOW factor, offering visual extravagance and a luxurious vacation-like feel. Tranquil waterfall sounds add to the getaway ambience, and the elevated ceiling height of the outdoor dining area makes a dramatic statement. Lantern sconces encompass the space, bringing an intimate glow to the otherwise majestic proportions. “The goal of our project was to provide the clients with a grand design yet an intimate feel for daily living,” says Robert. “We accomplished this by working closely with the homeowners throughout every phase of the project—seamless design services often provide astounding results,” he notes. “What I enjoy most about the home’s overall design is how inviting and relaxing it feels,” adds Kathleen. “The color palette is very soothing, and the soft textures give a satisfying balance to the contemporary clean lines and modern silhouettes. Walking through this house makes you want to take a deep exhale—and just settle in for a while.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Kitchen: A study in scale and proportion, the massive kitchen offers an ideal hub for chefs to cook and guests to gather in one large space. The oversize island was key when conceptualizing the design and, in turn, thoughtfully balanced with hutch-like cabinetry that outlines the perimeter. Luminous accents, including the faucet, fixtures, and a shiny metal hood over the stove, create light and reflection. One of the most spectacular features of the home is the integration of a smart technology system from HD Media. The system provides the homeowners with peace of mind as they can control features in the house even when they are away. All operated by programmed keypads as well as a user-friendly app, the technology includes the main level lighting, a sound system, and a home security system. Even the pool lighting, fire bowls, and water features can be operated through the app, allowing a customized experience in each space.

GARDEN CONNOISSEUR Homeowner Jack Breier exemplifies the name of “plantsman.”

48

AUGUST 2022 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

By Lucyann Boston Photography by Kim Dillon

In 1979, writing in the first edition of The Plantsman, a publication of the Royal Horticultural Society, Sandra Raphael, a senior editor in the dictionary department of the Oxford University Press, noted the term “plantsman” is intended to mean a connoisseur of plants or an expert gardener. She expanded on that theme by quoting Botanist David McClintock, featured in the Botanical Society of the British Isles News, who further refined the word by saying that “a plantsman is one who loves plants for their own sake and knows how to cherish them." McClintock went on to suggest that they “are the cream of those in the plant world; a fund of invaluable first-hand information.” By those definitions, Jack Breier is a true plantsman. His personal University City garden is a treasure trove of magnificent specimens gathered over the past 20 years and is a testimonial to his love of all things green and growing. His shady front yard with a canopy of a hornbeam, dogwood and redbud features layers of azaleas, rhododendrons, hostas, hydrangeas, boxwoods, campanulas, ferns, liriope and Japanese maples, with some elephant ears and caladium thrown in. Pulmonaria or lungwort provides an edging for much of the space. Trees are limbed up to provide high shade and let the structure of the trunks show forth. Travel into the back yard, guarded by a huge black gum, where patches of sun allow for groupings of shasta daisies and phlox to

provide flowers for the house. More shrub layers flow around the perimeter of the space and provide color even with nothing in bloom. Selections include purple tinted smoke bush (Cotinus), blue spruce, “Gold Thread” cypress (Chamaecyparis) and deep purple “Black Lace” elderberry (Sambucus), all edged by evergreen hellebores and “Mahogany Monster” heuchera. Espaliered apple and pear trees, with four different varieties grafted onto each trunk, provide a striking botanical and vertical accent. Adjacent to that an herb and vegetable garden offers wonderful selections for the kitchen. Just outside the back door, a private fenced space provides a backdrop for a vertical succulent garden created by Jack’s husband John Douglas, who used the arms of two ancient Adirondack chairs to frame the plants. Whimsical terracotta planters, with succulents spilling over the sides also blend the fence and garden. While Jack’s professional career includes a stint in the corporate world where he worked in customer service and finance and more recently as a successful real estate agent, his avocation has always been plant centric. Coming from parents and grandparents who were avid gardeners, he grew up around plants. But his interest and knowledge were expanded when, in the late 1990s, his mother sent him information on the Master Gardener program run by the University of Missouri Extension Service and he enrolled in what was then a telecommunication course, which took place during the evenings at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Then living in Dogtown, Jack decided to do the 50 hours of volunteer service the program required close to home by volunteering with the Flora Conservancy in Forest Park. The Conservancy has access to the Forest Park greenhouses and

oversees the plantings around the Jewel Box, Pagoda Circle by The Muny and several other areas when needed and also helps out with Lafayette Park. In addition the group propagates plants for a public sale the Saturday before Mother’s Day with the funds raised used to support gardening work in the park. Not long after that, while housesitting in University City, Jack fell in love with a nearby Spanish-style home with a good-sized private back yard. When the house came up for sale in 2001, he and John bought it. Fast forward to today, where Jack is officially the consultant/liaison for Flora Conservancy with the city of St. Louis, which owns the park; a long-time board member and president of U City in Bloom; and was a board member of the St. Louis branch of the University of Missouri Extension Service. He also volunteers as a docent and helps with the gardening at the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Kirkwood.

His knowledge is extensive, gleaned from years of talking with other gardeners, going on garden tours and watching a favorite BBC gardening show hosted by gardening expert Monty Don. "I have been exposed to so many different plants I didn’t know about,” he says. “Someone’s always giving me a start of something and then I have to find a place for it.” Some plants are treasured. There is the fig, purportedly brought from Italy by a previous owner of the Dogtown house, that has been reproduced in U City. Cuttings from that fig have gone to other volunteers at Flora Conservancy and been featured in the yearly sale. Seeds from the larkspur were grown by his grandmother and mother and now scattered in his current garden. He also is continually trying new things in his own garden and if successful, those plants are eventually propagated for the Flora Conservancy sale. “There is always room for

STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

one more plant,” he states firmly. The beautiful blue spruce that now accents his back border was a leftover from the U City in Bloom sale. “I saw it and thought, ‘I can find a home for that,'" he recalls. When he finds a plant he loves and one that works well in his garden, “I just keep dividing them up and marching them up the border and through the beds,” he explains. “I like to repeat the colors, textures and shapes to bring harmony and draw the eye through the garden.” He also has become a big fan of using ground-up leaf mulch throughout his landscape because it is lightweight and easy to manage and he believes it increases soil fertility. While Jack is the mastermind behind the garden design and maintenance, John is quick to pitch in on big projects and with spraying and fertilizing.

52

AUGUST 2022 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Jack sees his garden as a stress reliever. “It is a quiet, serene place where things are green and growing,” he says. “Part of it is meditative. Life can be so stressful. I can go out in the garden, do physical work and see results.” His work with Flora Conservancy and U City in Bloom, he believes, enriches his life in ways beyond gardening. His fellow volunteers have become friends. “I’ve met a lot of interesting people,” he says “We talk about books and movies and restaurants. I learn more about other cultures." In addition, “it is just so nice to be able to contribute to places so many people enjoy. It is wonderful to see people taking their wedding pictures in front of plants you have planted.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

New Growth Missouri Botanical Garden opens the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center and Emerson Conservatory to show species diversity. By Kristina DeYong Photography by Mary Olson and Tom Incrocci

This August brings the opening of the transformative Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, including the Emerson Conservatory. This brand-new Conservatory creates a space for visitors to experience plants from Mediterranean climates around the world, including California, South Africa, Western Australia, Chile and the Mediterranean itself. Permanent in-ground displays and hanging baskets will adorn the Emerson Conservatory. The building will be the setting for the annual Orchid Show and Holiday Show as well as other floral events and exhibits. Conservatories are an especially meaningful element of botanical gardens. They provide a window for the public to see species diversity that cannot necessarily grow and thrive in the natural outdoor conditions of the region. Extensive travel would be required to see such a wide variety of plants growing in their natural

habitats. Through conservatories, botanical gardens can simultaneously share the beauty of these plants with their visitors while protecting species with ex situ conservation. Isoplexis isabelliana is an excellent example of one such species. This show-stopping flowering shrub, also known as Canary Island foxglove, boasts beautiful, tall orange flowers and is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. It is endemic to the Canary Islands, meaning that it occurs naturally there and nowhere else on Earth. This magnificent plant is just one of the many rare and unique species the Garden is excited to display in the new Emerson Conservatory. To learn more about the new gardens of the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center project, visit mobot.org/taylorcenter.

GOING MICRO Microgreens are the new, nutrient-packed trend gripping St. Louis. And for good reason! By Moe Godat

What is a microgreen? Microgreens are essentially baby vegetables! Typically picked once they are 10 to 14 days old, microgreens differ from sprouts (baby vegetables in their first two to five days after germination) in looks, taste and nutritional value. Microgreens are the second phase of a plant’s life cycle, and they provide many key nutrients, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Any type of salad green, herb and many garden vegetables can be grown as microgreens. How to Use Them You’ll typically see microgreens used as garnishes in high-end restaurants because they add beauty to a plate along with a burst of flavor. However, you can incorporate them into your everyday smoothies, sandwiches and salads for taste as well as a nutritious boost.

Photography courtesy of Fiddlehead Fern Cafe

Eat Healthy, Eat Local “At Fiddlehead, we are very passionate about the products we offer. We first learned about microgreens from a neighbor who ran City Farm STL right in our neighborhood— and from him, we grew to love them! We now source them from Good Life Growing, a local urban farming company in North City that uses aquaponic, hydroponic, aeroponic and other organic farming methods to grow these cuties all year around. Sometimes, we even get them from our neighborhood preschool, Cornerstone Center for Early Learning. The kids grow them at school and bring them to the café. We love that microgreens add high amounts of nutrients to our menu items, and how beautiful they are. But more than anything, we love the community aspect it brings to us. Collaborating early on with a neighbor really helped both of our businesses grow; seeing these kids in our neighborhood so excited to share with us something they made has been really special; and the opportunity to support a local farm doing good work." — Fiddlehead Fern Cafe

Here’s What You’ll Need: • A glass or ceramic container with a lid • A grow mat or pad (varieties include coconut, hemp and jute) • Sprouting seeds • A window • Water First, soak your chosen sprouting seeds for six to eight hours depending on the type of seed (the packaging will often give you the recommended soaking time). Then, soak your growing mat in water and place it in the bottom of your container. Spread out the seeds evenly and secure the lid before placing it in a sunny window. Once the seeds sprout, you can remove the lid and let them grow until small, vibrant leaves begin to appear, watering daily.

Watering Tip: Don’t keep the mat soaked! This can cause mold and disease in your microgreens. Instead, water the mat from the bottom and occasionally mist the tops. Your microgreens will be ready to harvest once they’ve begun to sprout their first leaves. For best results, wait until they are 1 to 2.5 inches tall before harvesting.

“Microgreens are full of nutrients and easy to add to your meals,” says Mary Densmore, co-owner of Bee Simple City Farm. “If you’re interested in finding the right flavor, each microgreen’s flavor is pretty true to the full-grown plant. You can use them as garnishes, in smoothies, to put on top of salads, wraps, sandwiches, tacos, eggs, soup, etc. They can really go on anything! ”

Bee Simple City Farm Bee Simple City Farm began in 2014 as a partnership between urban farmers Mary Densmore and James Meinert. Located just a mile from downtown, they think eating can be as simple as eating clean, quality food grown right here in St. Louis.

Beating the Heat Poolside This St. Louis back yard got a refresh with furniture that won’t fade from sun exposure or wear out.

By Michelle Mastro Photography by Kim Dillon

60

AUGUST 2022 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

Homeowners Erin and Ross Toohey had purchased their home for its location, not its style, and this included the back yard. “Pretty much everything had been redone,” Erin says. “We had taken the whole house and back yard down to studs over the last six years. The pool was already dug, but we refinished that, putting in new tile and reconfiguring the hardscape like the forever deck and concrete.” Finally, once all that was accomplished, something else was needed that many people might not give a second thought about—they needed some backyard furniture. But backyard furniture can be hard to get right. Conventional thinking, though, assumes the cheaper the backyard furniture, the better, since

the items will be outdoors and thus will wear away anyhow. However, the couple knew they wanted furniture that made a design impact and would be of high-quality enough to beat the sun’s rays. They turned to Amini’s for help. “They had reached out to us,” says Arash Amini, whose father had started the business in 1975. “We carry a lot of brands and options, but a lot of our clients want custom items, and so we have incredible vendors that we work with.” Erin and Ross had wanted modern looking furniture to fit thehome that itself had been redesigned to feel more contemporary, “We like a much more modern look than most St. Louis style homes have,” Erin says. The backyard furniture needed to feel modern

too. The pool beds or daybeds were a custom-made design, says Arash. “One of our vendors made the daybeds for the family, who got to select their preferred color, style, shape and size.” Plus, the custom features make the beds invulnerable to the sun and weather changes. “The actual frames of the beds are made from cast aluminum that does not rust,” says Arash. “The materials in the cushions doesn’t trap water inside, while the outside is made from a solution of dyed acrylic, the same material restaurant awnings are made from. They’re as durable as it gets.” It turns out, the vendor had also made the daybeds for a hotel in Costa Rica that the family had stayed at not long before. “Usually, we try to bring back something from our travels, and so in a way, the daybeds are reminders of this trip,” Erin says. Finding new ways to be poolside mattered to Erin and Ross, who had wanted the pool to spend more time with family. “Pools are an investment. To us, having a pool is an investment in quality family time, being in it with the kids, or sitting by it. So we wanted the back yard that people wanted to come over to,” Erin notes. Having the right furniture would transform the family’s back yard into the perfect hangout spot. They got the swing chairs for the kids to use. “Sometimes one of the kids will read a book in them or their friends will come over and spend time on the swings.” Yet the daybeds were something Erin especially could get use out of. “I run a travel agency from home, and those pool beds are my office in the summer. Plus, they just have this Vegas feel to them, adding a funky feel that you don’t usually see in other homes.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

WINGS OF HOPE changes and saves lives through the power of aviation. In the U.S., the nonprofit provides medical air transport services—free of charge—to individuals who need access to specialized medical care. The organization also works in nine countries outside of the U.S., working with in-country partners to fly people in remote areas to emergency medical care and fly doctors into communities with no local health care. The homeowner did an extensive remodel of their original rustic carriage house. We completely reworked the first floor to encompass an eat-in kitchenette, bathroom, changing space and living/lounge room as well as incorporating outdoor space for a family farm table, grill area and outdoor shower. The modern update features retractable doors and a window that serves as a pass-through to the outdoor bar stools. The pool house has turned into the family’s favorite hangout space!

In addition to the couple’s nature-meets-modern aesthetic, they requested color and an edgy look. Scandalous Marble appeared via their Instagram feed, and a quick call secured the highly coveted, high-contrast slab. Sophistication was achieved through the balance of matte black hardware and plumbing fixtures with dramatic color and scale. The copper sink adds to the thoughtful mix of metals. Cabinets were stained a color slightly softer than black and were configured to suit the kitchen’s host of appliances.

Designed for entertaining crowds of almost any size, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that would wow any chef while having an eclectic farmhouse feel. Using both retro and antique furniture components tastefully reimagined to interplay with the kitchen and formal butler’s pantry, every detail was poured over to get the look the homeowner (a very creative mind herself ) was after.

Anne Marie Design studio set out to bring innovation to this kitchen for a family of six with materials of impeccable quality, plenty of storage space and a warm, sophisticated color palette. The new design includes double islands, top-of-the-line appliances and elevated designer touches. An octagonal breakfast nook completes the space with gray custom cushions and decorative pillows.

A Family Affair Two homeowners call on their professional relatives for a complete bathroom addition. By Moe Godat Photography by Anne Matheis

Homeowners Charlie and Nina Harris wanted to honor the roots of their 1916 home in their extensive main suite bathroom addition. “I’d describe our style as traditional with a modern flair, and we wanted this bathroom to be classy and elegant,” says Charlie. To help their vision come to life, they called on their designer relatives, Mary Signorelli of Le Coeur Design and Peter McGauey of PJM Contracting. “This project was a family affair for all parties involved!” says Signorelli. “We were the obvious choices for this couple who were moving to University City from St. Charles.” Besides just adding the bathroom, the pair also wanted a relaxing space of their own to go to after a full day with their four children. To achieve this, the homeowners went into the project with a wishlist including an extra-large, custom shower with soap insert and seat and ample storage. They also wanted to reuse all of the original light fixtures and wall sconces. Retaining the home’s historic aesthetic was important to all parties involved. “Taking style cues from the house helped lead the aesthetic,” Signorelli notes. To do this, they coordinated their choices with the warmth of the original wood in the windows and doors and continued the detail of the baseboards and three-piece moldings. “I was skeptical about the unlacquered brass,” Charlie laughs, “but it turned out to be my favorite part of the project. It

was a cool surprise to find a style of brass that isn’t cheapened by mass production and rediscovering the way things used to be made.” “The second major component of the design was the black marble,” continues Signorelli. “That’s probably what really sets this bathroom apart.” The homeowners fell in love with the idea of a walnut vanity and Nero Marquina black slab on top. With the designer’s help, they decided to miter the vanity countertop 6 inches high to add drama. To fulfill the homeowner’s wishes for extra storage, they added a matching walnut linen cabinet to the left of the toilet. One of the biggest challenges for the team was creating the bathroom from scratch, as they sacrificed an entire bedroom in order to create the space, turning two bedrooms to create the primary suite as it is today, which was particularly challenging to do in a 100-year-old house according to Signorelli. “The homeowners were also pregnant with their fourth child as this project was finishing up, and they couldn’t have been easier to work with,” she says with admiration. “This may sound cliche, but a sign of a good marriage is being able to successfully get through a renovation, which makes these two meet the Gold Standard!” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

slhl BRIGHT IDEA

SOOTHING SHOWER SURROUNDINGS Bring the vacation vibe home with an outdoor shower, pool or beach not required! Creating a private outdoor shower oasis turns a normal every day task into an exhilarating experience the whole family can enjoy, from kids to pets to houseguests.

By Dewson Construction Company. The best of both worlds—a spacious tiled indoor shower with double doors that lead to and an outdoor shower surrounded by IPE wall panels and IPE decking. The double doors are glass with metal frames that allow for a seamless transition from the indoor space to the outdoor space. The wall panels offer the warm and cozy feeling of wood and provide privacy while natural light flows in from above the walls and through the pergola style structure above.

By Peter McDonald Architect and Lisa Tharp Design. The designer used pool plaster for the inside of the “inside” shower instead of tile and commissioned Jeff Soderburg, the furniture designer, to install the wood decking, inside and out - which was milled from recycled Ice wood from the Coney Island boardwalk. A Nanawall door was used between the two showers.

By Andersson-Wise Architects. This outdoor shower is designed to take in views of the native pine forest and Flathead lake beyond. The north wall of the shower is made of Grand Fir cordwood that was harvested from the site. Low cast-in-place concrete walls form an outdoor, lakeside privacy screen that preserves the view to the lake while defining an edge to the shower space.

client wanted to create an outdoor/indoor feel by combining an outdoor shower in the adjacent deck with the indoor bathroom area. The designer used large windows and glass doors to merge it seamlessly, and a natural color palette for a bright and modern look. All tiles are from the designer’s showroom Spazio LA Tile Gallery.

Photography by Casey Dunn.

By Matt Garcia Design. The designer wanted the outdoor shower to be private yet easily connected to the poolscape. The pool house is framed by two exposed concrete walls. The shower had to be warm and full of texture. The designer incorporated the concrete wall along with adding a dark hexagon tile as the main shower wall. The color plays off of the dark steel fascia. Opposite the concrete wall is a cedar wood siding that features a hidden door into the sink and toilet room. The decking material is ipe and the soffit above is cedar as well. Towel hooks on the concrete wall and a small teak bench complete the space.

By Di Biase Filkoff Architects. This outdoor shower is as private and in-touch with nature as the picturesque landscape that surrounds it. Covered in stone and adorned with a rain shower head, its unique design omits a ceiling, allowing its guests to shower under the sky above.

The Great Gatsby The Gatsby Penthouse in Midtown, St. Louis, boasts rich history, stunning design and a consistently rated five-star experience. By Moe Godat Photography by Suzy Gorman, courtesy of Gould Holdings.

St. Louis has no shortage of historic architecture and design dating well into the Art Deco era. Noted for high-glam finishes and show-stopping drama, Art Deco interiors originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style in the United States during the 1930s. This sense of grandeur can be experienced throughout the St. Louis area still today, but perhaps nowhere more than The Gatsby Penthouse, a short-term luxury rental in Midtown offered by Gould Holdings. “We wanted to elevate the Art Deco style already present in the building to accommodate modern customers,” says Joshua Gould, owner of Gould Holdings and resident of The Gatsby Penthouse when it’s not being rented. Consider the design elevated! An exquisite art collection featuring Ming Dynasty vases, private rooftop terraces and an original terrazzo staircase are just some of the features harkening back to the Roaring Twenties. 4,000 square feet and situated at the tallest residential point in the city, the penthouse has hosted some of St. Louis’s most famous figures since the 1930s. Its location in the Midtown area is part of the draw for visitors. Located between Downtown and historic Central West End and next-door neighbor to attractions such as the Fox Theater, Powell Symphony Hall and The Angad Arts Hotel, the penthouse offers many of the city’s best attractions within walking distance. Visitors also have easy access to an abundance of St. Louis’s best restaurants. “We’re very proud of our attention to detail,” says Gould. “This isn’t your typical short-term stay, and we fill it with every luxury you can imagine. A lot of these updates

happened because I have such a passion for breathing life into historic properties. It lets our guests focus on the past and keep it relevant today.” The Gatsby Penthouse isn’t just for city visitors; it also hosts a plethora of events and special occasions including photo shoots and wedding day accommodations. In fact, The Gatsby Penthouse was recently named as one of St. Louis Bridal’s top bridal suites because of its beautiful view and luxurious amenities. More than just a short-term rental, The Gatsby Penthouse consistently earns the highest ratings in the area by guests. slhl CLASSIC OR CRAZE

Losing Steam? Doorless, walk-in showers are perfect for ADA compliance and aging in place, but they can get drafty. Are they here to stay or will their popularity start losing steam?

CRAZE

Walk-in showers with no doors are definitely more of a craze and not for everyone. It’s a unique application meant to make a space feel larger, but since clear glass also makes the space open, plus holds heat and blocks water, it’s a more practical choice for a shower. Anne Marie Boedges, Anne Marie Design Studio. Curbless showers have long been used in hospital and nursing home facilities and now in high-end luxury bathroom remodels as well. To create the doorless shower, the floor needs to slope to one side so that the water can drain. While it is easy to incorporate into new construction, it can be very difficult in a remodel. CJ Knapp, Yours by Design.

BOTH

The “doorless shower” is a craze. While the concept of not having the door is initially appealing, in function, this often can leave the shower feeling cold. The other element being “curbless” is classic. This used to be tricky from a construction standpoint, having to modify the floor framing to build the shower floor slope. The result – a very refined streamlined look that not only looks great, but functionally works great for people wanting to age in place. Michael Cyr, FORNEY + architecture. The question is how many people will like mopping up after a shower where there is no door? The important issue here is that there is not a threshold to step over. This should be how all showers are made in order to be accessible. I have installed showers without thresholds and still have a door to keep the water contained. Linda K. Kusmer, Interior Design Consultant.

C L A SSI C

Doorless shower designs have one of the biggest benefits: you can style them with an endless array of looks, materials, colors and finishes. They give you an open, welcoming atmosphere. When combined with heated floors and a fan you will keep the space warm, giving you a luxurious spa-like experience. Jamison Boyd, Henry Kitchen & Bath. Personally, I feel that with an aging population and ADA adherence, walk-in-curb free showers are a great new classic. The look is cleaner and if flooring material is appropriate, it can create a seamless flooring detail. Robert Idol, Idol Design. The “open-concept” way of living is becoming popular in the shower area, too. Some really like the open-concept, spa-like feeling of a doorless shower entry. For others, especially those aging in place, doorless entries are ideal for mobility issues. A few things to consider while planning are shower size, location of the shower entry, drainage issues and the style of the shower head for splash control. Barbara Collins, Barbara Collins Interior Design. I think this idea will be around for a while. It's a lot easier to navigate into the shower and provides a necessary barrier-free entry. It's also a very attractive design concept. Bill Cover, William D. Cover, Architect LLC.

They have been normal in Europe for decades. Every noteworthy hotel in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, etc, has had this kind of door. But there is a difference: the door was on a deep soaking tub and the glass was only from top of tub to above the shower. But we Americans have an idea for improvement: a revolutionary idea that made the glass separate for a shower and made it stationary! Voila! That’s what I call American ingenuity. Joyce Cockrell, Joyce Cockrell Designs, LLC. Walk-in showers are perfect for those with mobility issues. Doorless showers don’t feature a threshold, allowing you to walk right into the shower with nothing to impede you. This makes them a safer option, especially if you plan on aging in place at your home or have any elderly or mobility impaired guests. With no door to trap in steam, doorless showers might have a tendency to feel drafty at times. The pros outweigh the cons. Rebekah Murphy, Stone Hall Cabinetry. A doorless shower is a luxurious addition to any bathroom. It offers an elegant custom look and can increase the value of your home when it's time to sell. From a design standpoint, a walk-in shower keeps the bathroom as open and spacious as possible. Steve Donovan, Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry.
