Colin Miller/Strauss Peyton
Welcome to SLHL’s second annual Favorite Spaces issue! We are extremely excited to give you another sneak peek into some of St. Louis’ best design professionals’ favorite spaces in their own homes. So get comfortable, grab a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and savor each and every beautifully designed space. Amie Corley, interior designer and young mom, enjoys spending time with her family in her cheerful sunroom (page 44) that is at once comfortable and chic. Bright colors, fanciful artwork, vintage finds and mix-and-matched furnishings come together masterfully to create a kicked-back, family-friendly hangout that is still big on style. Interior designer Ellen Kurtz has done a fabulous job transforming her unfinished lower level into a rustic and rugged entertainment space reminiscent of the “Old West” (page 46). Her expert use of textiles, fabrics and finishes, as well as unique furnishings and accessories, gives this “fun for all ages” room durability and panache. With the mountains rising regally in the background, interior designer Steve Toedebusch’s loggia (page 48) at his California home is magical in every way. Rich in detail and custom touches, this refined poolside oasis is Steve’s favorite place to “get away from it all.” Happy, happy, happy! That’s how I would describe interior designer Joni Spear’s marvelous family room (page 52). Who wouldn’t want to spend time in this colorful, eclectic space? Joni has created a delightful gathering area, chic and sophisticated yet relaxed and friendly, to share with family and friends. Interior designer Heidi Hartwig’s living room (page 54) is a study in the elegance of traditional décor. Its deep chocolate walls serve as a rich backdrop for luscious greens, reds and golds and classic furnishings that are as timeless as they are beautiful. Bold, bright and fresh. Interior designer Denise Fogarty’s revamped dining room (page 56) is all of these things. With a brand new look, this welcoming and spirited space is one you would never want to leave. Kitchen designer Julie Cullman has fashioned a kitchen (page 60) that uniquely blends contemporary and traditional style. With its clean lines and soft hues, this cook’s kitchen is one that Julie will enjoy for a long time. Tranquil and serene, the spa-like master bathroom (page 62) in interior designer Jane Ganz’s home is the epitome of elegance. A true retreat, this is the ideal spot to relax at the end of a busy day. The finest finishes blend beautifully with the latest technology to make Jane's master bath the ultimate luxury. A quietly masculine guest room (page 64) is one of interior designer Diane Breckenridge-Barrett’s favorite rooms in her home. Lovingly designed with her grandsons in mind, this softly hued room, with its classic details and a touch of whimsy, would make any guest feel special. And last, but certainly not least, is SLHL’s favorite home with a view (page 30). Situated on a stunning bluff overlooking the Missouri River, this St. Alban’s beauty is truly spectacular in every way, with stunning views from every room that capture nature’s splendor. This special issue of the magazine is one of my favorites, too. I hope it will become one of yours.

slhl HELLO
Enjoy the
Ben Gibbard, an American musician born in the 1970s, wrote “ I wish we could open our eyes, to see in all directions at the same time. Oh what a beautiful view.” That’s how I felt when I read this issue of SLHL; that every single page was a new view, a glimpse into the lives and spaces of some of the best design professionals in St. Louis. Winners of our second annual Favorite Spaces contest, these talented individuals each offer unique perspectives on what makes them happiest at home; each has a different point of view — and they’re all beautiful! In this autumn issue, we also share with you SLHL’s favorite “home with a view,” a stunning jewel that rises majestically over the Missouri River at St. Albans. Again, it’s all about the views. Designed and built to take full advantage of the natural beauty surrounding it, this home took our breath away. For my birthday this year, my wonderful husband, Barney, surprised me with something I’ve been secretly coveting for years — a hot pink scooter! Isn’t that funny? I have always loved watching people zoom around on these “mini motorcycles” and thought how fun it would be to have one of my own. So now I do! And as I was “zooming” into work the other day, it struck me that one of the things I love most about my scooter is the opportunity it gives me to enjoy the views. There’s something kind of optimistic and uplifting about the time I spend on my scooter. With the wind rushing through my hair and the cool breeze on my face, I just feel happy, especially knowing that the view ahead — on the road, and just in life— is rosy and bright. So as we make our way into another fabulous fall, we at SLHL hope you are inspired by the views, not only on our pages, but in your own lives as well.

1. “This transitional rug feels like a playful take on Victorian wallpaper prints, and the subdued chocolate and vanilla colors really let the detailed pattern shine. It’s a fresh, clean accent that would complement contemporary or classic décor.”
2. A soft blend of wool, angora and cashmere gives this throw a velvety texture perfect for curling up with on a chilly night. The soothing colors are calm and welcoming and would be a nice complement to any living room during our cooler seasons — perfect with a chai tea latte!”

“This color has a little more yellow in it than other chartreuse greens, which I think gives it a little more pop. It goes beautifully with browns, charcoals and even whites, adding a vibrant color. It also goes really well with coral, which is my all time favorite color. In fact, I have those colors [chartreuse and coral] in my living room.”

It is a striking pop of color teriors, 636 -220-9700 against a dark gray-glazed wall, and it complements darker and lighter hues of lavender (such as hydrangea blue). It could be used as a focal color against stark white, cream or other neutral settings. It can also make a statement as a throw pillow, a fun accessory, an area rug or picture frame. However, this color should never be used as a bridesmaid dress!”
Designer David Blakely Niche, 314-621-8131, nichestl.com “I love how the dark color works extremely well with lighter neutral upholstery and lighter wood tones.”

Juicy steaks, rosemary-scented legs of lamb, thick-cut pork chops — ahhh, music to my ears. Okay, you guessed it, I’m an admitted meat lover, and when autumn’s chill nips the air, I feel all the more justified when my eyes make a mad dash for the delicious meat entrées on the menu. So it’s understandable then that I also enjoy the ripe red wines that go best with them. There are probably thousands of Cabernet Sauvignons on the market from nearly every grape-growing country in the world. But there aren’t very many winemakers who can boast of producing top-quality Cabs from two hemispheres. California native Robert L. Pepi is a winemaking consultant for one of Argentina’s oldest wineries, Valentin Bianchi, while also producing his own single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — Eponymous, as well as wines for other California producers. It’s a fascinating exercise to try Bob’s 2008 Eponymous Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (grown on a small mountain vineyard right below Bob’s house), then the 2008 Two Angels Mayacamus Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (with grapes from a vineyard Bob owns near the top of the Mayacamus Mountains on the Sonoma side), and finally, Valentin Bianchi’s 2008 Famiglia Bianchi Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bianchi’s high desert vineyards in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. At three different price points (Eponymous retails for around $45, Two Angels at approximately $27 and Famiglia for about $18), each is a great bargain given the pure expressions of the Cabernet grape in every bottle. Other, more hearty “big red” wines fit the bill when enjoying substantial fall fare, including Spain’s signature grape, Tempranillo. Very little blending is done in Spain, so many of its wines are 100 percent Tempranillo. The differences stem from the terroir (a combination of soil, altitude and climate) in which the grapes are grown; the type of oak used (primarily coming from France, the United States or Eastern European countries) to age the wines; and the period of time the wine resides in the oak. In Spain, certain designations on the label indicate how long the wine has aged. If a wine is labeled Crianza, it must age in oak a minimum of one year, with an additional one year of aging in the bottle before it is released for sale. Bodegas Muriel Crianza from Rioja Alta and Tinto Figuero 10 Months from the Garcia Figuero family in the Ribera del Duero are two well-priced, beautifully executed Crianzas that are shining examples of the high-quality wines coming from their regions. If you follow the Duero River from Spain into neighboring Portugal, you’ll end up in that country’s renowned Douro Valley. Though the river has subtly changed names, this area grows comparable “big reds” that have become highly prized for their sophistication and fruitforward style. Unlike Spain, almost all of Portugal’s top red wines are blends of three to more than 20 grape varieties. Quinta do Vallado, where the family descended from the Ferreira port house, founded in the 1700s by Portugese legend Dona Adelaide Ferreira, produces many of the highest-rated Douro Valley red wines. The winery’s Douro Red 2008 is a relative bargain for a five-grape wine of this depth and dark fruit flavors. Fall is the perfect time to enjoy the richness of the “big reds.” And you can be sure I’ll be savoring them all winter long. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Perched high on the bluffs of St. Albans overlooking the Missouri River, this home offers breathtaking views to the west. The stone facade glows softly in the dusk, while multiple balconies and terraces offer the best seats in the house for enjoying the sunset. utumn is a special season for a native St. Louis couple who recall falling in love with a potential homesite during Oktoberfest a few years back. “We were viewing the property from a helicopter, and the leaves were just spectacular,” the wife remembers. Situated on the soaring bluffs of St. Albans, the 8-acre site offered majestic views and an opportunity to build a secluded luxury estate that took full advantage of the sweeping vistas. Today, their European-influenced home is romantic and welcoming, nestled among towering trees and directly overlooking the Missouri River and surrounding countryside.

Situated adjacent to the Country Club of St. Albans, SLHL's favorite "home with a view" is part of a community comprised of more than 300 homes in 13 unique neighborhoods, each just minutes from the manicured grounds of the golf course. The road leading to the hilltop home mimics a switchback, zigzagging through a series of near-hairpin turns, climbing all the while. Designed by architect Dick Busch, the house is impressive without being ostentacious. The beautiful stone

facade echoes the color of the nearby bluffs and softly changes from chalk to pewter as the sunlight fades from day into evening. Designed to maximize the views, nearly every room of the spacious home has westward-facing windows that frame the river valley beyond. The owners had considerable input into the architectural design and admit that getting it right was an evolving process. “My husband must have redrawn the plans a hundred times, laughs the wife, and the husband

sheepishly agrees, “It’s sort of a hobby of mine!” But both are quick to pay tribute to the primary architect and many artisans who turned their dream into a reality. “The design process was so collaborative and positive — everyone made valuable contributions, from the architect to the stonemason to the framing carpenter,” the husband notes. “We were fortunate to work with so many highly skilled people.” The result is a home that not only perfectly suits the site but also
beautifully reflects the owners’ attention to detail. The interior feels exceedingly cozy in spite of the expansive windows and generously sized rooms, thanks in part to the soft palette, warm lighting and scaled-for-comfort furnishings. Another key reason the house feels so enveloping is that the ceiling height varies from room to room, and sometimes even within a room, boosting the intimacy factor of certain spaces and helping to define specific living areas with few interior

walls. Yet the home does not reveal itself all at once and offers lovely surprises at every turn. The entry features a magnificent handmade door of sunken cypress, which opens onto a stone foyer and a wall of windows, presenting the first opportunity to enjoy the panoramic setting. A honeyhued wood floor anchors much of the main level, and support beams made of 2-inch hard pine salvaged from a barn in Ohio add a hint of rustic character. A lavish master suite, with a dressing room, morning kitchen and a personal study for each spouse, occupies the left wing of the home, while the right wing features a charming guest apartment for lucky visitors. In between, the public areas — formal living and dining rooms, kitchen and great room, lower-level lounge and several decks and balconies — offer many ideal gathering spots inside and out, making the house perfect for entertaining. “We love hosting family celebrations and holidays,” the husband says, while the wife reminisces, “Our daughter and son-inlaw got engaged on a bench out front, and the wedding was here on the grounds.” As the sun sinks low on the western horizon, the romance of the river is unmistakable, and our favorite "home with a view" is a perfect place to enjoy its captivating beauty. See www. stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Amie Corley Interiors 314-496-6022 amiecorley.com
Why she loves it:
“Palm Beach meets bohemian” is how interior designer Amie Corley describes her cheerful sunroom. “I’ve tried to establish a balance between wild artwork and fun, colorful upholstery,” says Amie. “I believe that spaces should look curated — styled and assembled over a period of time rather than all at once.” Amie mixed vintage finds, such as the chartreuse Knoll chairs, with new pieces including the urbane white coffee table. Creating a kid-friendly space that the whole family could enjoy was Amie’s mission, as her sunroom triples as a family room and TV room. “The bright colors keep us happy, and the mismatched style is a perfect blend of comfortable and chic,” says Amie.
Why the judges love it:
This room is all about the successful blending of opposites — vintage and modern, eclectic and traditional, and bright colors contrasted with neutrals. It stylishly marries a personal and cozy feel with an alive and upbeat ambience. This is an engaging, fun space for today’s modern family.

INTERIOR DESIGNER
Ellen Kurtz, ASID Ellen Kurtz Interiors 11612 Page Service Drive 314-426-6262 ellenkurtzinteriors.com Why she loves it:
The inspiration for interior designer Ellen Kurtz’s rustic lower level was her western movie buff husband, Ty. The space was unfinished when Ellen began planning the remodel, and she made sure it was as kid-friendly as it was Old West-rugged every step of the way to accommodate the couple’s children and grandchildren. “The space needed a TV area, a pool table area and a bar,” says Ellen. “Using concrete countertops and stained concrete floors made it easy for cleanup and Little Tikes cars!” Barn wood for wainscoting, slate for the fireplace and tall, fabric-covered booth seating tie the room’s theme together fashionably and flawlessly.
Why the judges love it:
This lower level is a gorgeous example of how to do a themed room correctly. The authentic, rustic details work together to create a warm entertaining area. The textile and fabric choices, such as the leather and nailhead trim adorning the front of the bar, are not only on theme but work together to create a stylish, fantastical retreat.

Why he loves it:
This poolside sanctuary in the California home of interior designer Steve Toedebusch is his pride and joy. “It is a loggia off the living room and is used most of the time for entertaining and just relaxing,” says Steve. Rich, unique details, including custom-made light fixtures and crosscut travertine marble flooring, give the space show-stopping edge. His outdoor retreat is a soothing spot to read and admire the view during the day and transitions into a cool, cozy space to dine in the evening. “With the doors open to the living room and candlelight, it can be a magical place,” says Steve.
Why the judges love it:
This warm, coastal-inspired outdoor living space is a flawless example of high design and décor. The whitewashed ceiling and beams add a Cape Cod feel to the sophisticated seating area and are complemented by the cream-colored curtains that add a beach cabana feel. The minimal, sleek design and simple furnishings make it a welcoming oasis.

Why she loves it:
“As a full-time designer with three children, family time is cherished,” says interior designer Joni Spear. “The family room is designed to be a vibrant space that naturally draws us together.” The bright fuchsia walls are happy and hospitable and pop against the white leather sectional sofa and molding. “Bold colors were inspired by the rug, which grounds the space and plays nicely off of the wall palette,” says Joni. The flat-screen TV and family computer make this room a popular hangout for the whole family — and as Joni describes it, “a wonderfully endless stream of friends.”
Why the judges love it:
The white molding against the bold walls in this bright space add chic sophistication and formality to a relaxed, inviting family room. With an eyepleasing layout and welcoming furnishings, the designer has blended elements of refined style with a joyful, family-friendly color palette.

Denise Fogarty, ASID Denise Fogarty Interiors 1044 Bristol Manor Drive 314-757-1112 denisefogartyinteriors.com
Why she loves it:
The dining room is a very important space in interior designer Denise Fogarty’s home. It acts as a study for her son, a conference room for her meetings with sales representatives and an entertaining space for parties and get-togethers. So, when Denise decided to redo the room’s décor, she chose a bright and welcoming color palette. Bold green paint and vibrant reupholstered chairs add personality, and crisp white chandelier shades balance the room with sophisticated style. After months of eyeing artwork that didn’t quite fit with the décor of her house, Denise found a home for the pieces in her cheery new dining room. “The artwork was one of the final touches. It made the whole room feel more like the rest of my home — beachy,” says Denise.
Why the judges love it: Above: Denise with her too-cute maltese Riley. Opposite page: The newly upholstered Chippendalestyle chairs pop with eye-catching color.
56
This room has a fresh look that’s interesting without feeling too contrived. The contrast between the dark wood and crisp, bright upholstery fabric and paint is pleasing, and the striking green walls really make the art pop. Using the strongest color on the walls was a bold choice that paid off.

KITCHEN DESIGNER
Julie Cullman, ASID brooksBerry Kitchens & Baths 751 Old Frontenac Square 314-872-7720 brooksberry.com
Why she loves it:
“It’s [helped] transition me from being a single person to a married person,” says kitchen designer Julie Cullman of her kitchen. “I started the design process when I was single, and by the time it was finished, we were getting married.” Julie shares that she and her new husband chose to host their wedding reception at their home and that the kitchen provided a happy place to celebrate with friends and family. When asked what she loves most about the space, she doesn’t hesitate to say it’s the glossy countertops. “The green countertop on the island and around the sink [are my favorite parts],” says Julie. “It’s an unusual material, and I love the greens, grays and cream colors.” Other favorite items include the professional-style appliances (Julie loves to cook), the restored vintage dining table purchased at a flea market and the mid-century chairs she inherited from her grandmother.
Why the judges love it:
Clean lines and quiet décor make this uncluttered kitchen restful. The green and gold palette and lovely natural light is complemented with a skillful use of subtle color — the pear hue warms up the stainless steel and balances the strong black accents. This kitchen is a very adept mix of styles — it is contemporary, with nods to the mid-century design of the home.

INTERIOR DESIGNER
Jane Ganz, ASID
Directions In Design, Inc. 1849 Craig Road 314-205-2010 didstl.com
Why she loves it:
The elegant master bathroom in interior designer Jane Ganz’s home captures the feeling of a tranquil spa retreat. Complete with a fireplace and television within sight of the enormous, in-ground bathtub, the upper level includes hand-blown glass sinks, glazed antique cream furniture and silver patina and crystal wall sconces. From polished porcelain tile with iridescent mosaic squares to a coffered ceiling with intricate molding, a crushed glass chandelier and a skylight, this bathroom is truly a therapeutic retreat from head to toe. “It’s a perfect place for a glass of wine and meditation as I watch the glow of the fireplace, made of aqua burning glass,” says Jane.
Why the judges love it:
Elegant restraint makes the fine materials used to create this spa-like master bath serene and chic. Technology for ultimate comfort is seamlessly incorporated with a fireplace and television, and the marble gives the room its twist, moving it away from the expected. The echo of the cool color of the marble in the upholstery choice for the two chairs is also a lovely, unexpected touch.

Diane Breckenridge-Barrett, ASID Diane Breckenridge Interiors 501 S. Lindbergh Boulevard 314-727-2323 breckenridgeinteriors.com
Why she loves it:
Creating a subdued yet lively guest bedroom that will charm guests of all ages is challenging — unless you’re interior designer Diane Breckenridge-Barrett. Diane describes this space as “perfect for all my grandsons” and says that the design is in the details. “When I saw the chest, with its maritime motif, I knew I had found the perfect inspiration for the room,” says Diane. “Every time I walk by this room, I cannot help but appreciate the details that pull [it] together.” The custom-made caramel duvet covers with aqua accents are playfully complemented by the aqua walls, knitted pillow shams and plaid fabrics that pepper the room’s décor.
Why the judges love it:
Exuding quiet masculinity with its subdued but warm color scheme, this room shows careful attention to detail. The welting on the bed covering draws in the blue of the ship on the antique dresser without seeming overly coordinated. It’s a versatile space where a guest of any age could rest comfortably. The headboards, made with nailhead trim and plaid upholstery, are a good “everything old is new again” nod to classic decorating.

This beautiful backyard oasis began as sketches by the owner’s son. Working with the boy and his father, the designers at Westport Pools were able to develop a residential pool with all the amenities found in water parks – but on a backyard scale. The project included a swim-up bar, a grotto with a waterfall, water basketball, a spa and an outdoor fire area with a two-story gazebo and viewing area.
