Penticton and Area Access Society Legal Advocacy: Legal Advocacy volunteers have some more specific knowledge than our general advocacy volunteers. They assist our staff Legal Advocate to gather important information, interview clients, maintain accurate files and records, book appointments using an on-line calendar, and other tasks under the direction of the staff advocate. Such volunteers will have or gain knowledge of legislation including tenancy, family, criminal, consumer debt, human rights, income assistance and many others. General Client Support and Advocacy General: Advocacy volunteers have a broad knowledge of available community resources and programs and they complete initial intake interviews at our drop-in. General Advocacy volunteers may able assist clients to fill out forms, connect with other community programs or social services, and meet with clients for needed follow-up appointments. Community Volunteer Income Tax Program: This is a unique program for PAAS for many reasons. First, it is the only service that we receive virtually no funding for and it is run entirely by volunteers. Some specific training is required and it is somewhat seasonal in nature. Although some volunteers work in this program all year round, there is a significant demand for this service at tax time. The service is, like all our services, completely free for low income households. Administration and Support Admin support volunteers tend to work with staff and rarely interact with clients directly. They often come in once or twice each week and assist with data collection and entry, written communication, file management, general care and upkeep of the Centre, as well as some special projects such as developing resource materials or marketing for fundraisers. Disability Advocacy: Disability volunteers usually attend to clients at our drop-in who need to apply for disability benefits. They interview clients, set up the initial file for the staff advocate, and assist clients to assemble information related to their applications. On occasion, a disability volunteer may support a client to visit their doctor or access other services.

Board Membership: PAAS endeavors to include as broad a representation of our clients and communities as possible among our decision makers. In many ways this can be a significant commitment of time and responsibility. Let us know if this may interest you and we can begin by discussing your membership to PAAS and connect you to someone who can answer your questions. Reception: Our reception desk can be the hot seat of the centre - especially during busy drop-in afternoons. Reception volunteers typically stay for one or two 3.5 hour shifts each week and they answer the phone, take messages, record statistics, greet and direct clients coming for appointments or drop-in services. Reception volunteers are great at multitasking, are comfortable interacting with a wide range of community members, are well organized, and keen to learn a little bet about everything at the Penticton and Area Access Centre. Request an application form or contact our resource and referral coordinator at 250-493-6822 e-mail: info@accesscentre.org
