40 YEARS OF SIS

his year is the school’s 40th anniversary and it also happens to be my 20th year of working with our extraordinary community. I would like to tell you three short stories from my time here, which I hope capture the essence of what makes our community of children, teachers, staff, and parents alike so special.

The first story is about the old and the new
N
ot so long ago, I was walking past our old school site in Paniagua and had a sudden urge to go in and savour some memories of where I had started all those years ago. The building is now derelict and boarded up but I managed to find an opening in the wall and crawled into the courtyard. What came flooding back to me, was the vivid image of the first time I visited the school and how struck I was by the obvious bond between the children, the teachers and the staff. The words ‘glued by love ‘ came to my mind and that phrase has stuck with me ever since as the true essence of this school. A couple of years later 21 of us, who then made up the staff of the school, stood excitedly at the new site. We paced out with tape where the school buildings would be in our village. We had decided to build it as a village
so that we could maintain this special bond, which super glues our community together. It is as true today as it was then. Visitors to the school, whether they be inspectors, visiting schools or new families being welcomed by the Parent Ambassadors, all comment on that connective bond as something special.
1980
Young children interacting with the older students; staff with parents; teachers with children; this is what makes our school become an extended family and the planned expansion of the school will continue this village theme. As a footnote to the story, well over 20 of our teaching staff today, whether they were teachers or students then, started at the old school in Paniagua. That’s over 500 years of history there to help bond us together!

The second story is about opening minds, creating magic and changing the world
A
s you may know, we are an Apple Distinguished school and for the last two years, our students have been invited by Apple, to present at their Teacher Conference in London. On both occasions, I had the privilege of watching them in action over three days, demonstrating to over one thousand teachers from

around Europe, how IT can take learning to another level. In the first year, our students used their technical wizardry and scientific rigour to solve a social problem by designing, building and testing a working prototype compost machine which could help farmers in lesser developed countries.
They showcased the prototype to assembled teachers, communicating effortlessly in up to three languages, with the confidence, and expertise of an adult doing it at a trade fair! The sense of awe and wonder, at their mastery of 21st-century skills, was writ large on the faces of the teachers in the audience, including mine!
I
n the second year, our talented musicians demonstrated with complete mastery how iPads helped them become more effective with their creativity as well as in the way they collaborated, communicated and played. The wow factor, in watching them engage with the audience, was seeing how they linked what they had learned in the classroom to service learning. Our magicians finished their tour de force by explaining how they then performed music live in events like Sotorox and Kiss the Kasbah to raise funds for our partnership projects in La Linea, Morocco, Uganda and Ecuador. These are just two examples of how our remarkable teachers over the years have created extraordinary experiences to help connect our children to their gifts and passions. More recently they have now taken this a step further by connecting with other teachers, students, parents and staff to make sure these talents are used to help others not in our care.

years ago another remarkable teacher of ours, took the first group of students to Asni to work with a Berber community in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. They spent a week there helping with the building of a new community centre and getting to know the children and adults within the community. As they were about to

leave, our intrepid teacher gathered the students together, congratulated them for their efforts and for the friendships they had made over the week and then rather bluntly asked what they were going to do for the next 51 weeks of the year to build a sustainable bond with the Asni community. How would 1 become 52 become 520 weeks?
That light bulb, aha moment, was one of several key contributing elements towards the establishment of The Kindred Project, the first student-led NGO to be formed in a school. Back at SIS, for the next 51 weeks, they kept in touch with the village council and together, came up with the idea of an eco-tourism centre for schools. They created the website for the community and soon after, other school groups from the UK began to visit. 520 weeks later, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our partnership with our extended family. Over these years, further generations of students have collaborated with the Tiwizi Association to create other Social Enterprise projects including growing saffron and beekeeping, which now cover the costs of running the village. These are life-shaping experiences for our children.

T
he story of our 40 years or 2080 weeks is the story of striving continuously to improve the ways we enrich the lives of our children and our world. As you read this yearbook you will see some of the ways we go about doing this. It is always about adding to what has gone before, of connecting the new to the old. If you read the D2 stories you will see that what they remember most, are the extraordinary experiences that go beyond the classroom walls and bring learning to life. When they are crafted in a way that connects our children to their Gifts, Passions and, through Service (GPS), helps others do the same, they can open minds, create magic and change the world.
2018
This is our quest. It is about creating a learning journey of ME to WE for every student in our care; it is about helping them connect to their own GPS.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Passing the torch Our history and our stories have helped create the DNA of our remarkable SIS community. The story of our 40 years is the story of striving continuously to improve the ways we inspire and enrich the lives of our children and our world. It has always been about adding to what has gone before, of new beginnings which connect the new to the old so that our story continues to unfold.
20 years later I stepped up to help, by working with a most remarkable team to build a new campus and create a school that was International both in spirit and in deed. Now, as I step down from my role, I know, with all my heart, our partners, Inspired, will step up to carry on this Vision.
May I, therefore, take this opportunity to give thanks to those who have gone before; to those who are with us now and to those new George Moore and the early pioneers members who will continue to carry stepped up to create Sotogrande the torch. international school 40 years ago and

Head o I can’t believe that we have finished another year, once again with more students, more teachers and more experiences than ever before. Looking through these pages brings so much joy to me as I reflect on the year, our achievements, and our shared moments. 2018 marks a special year for us as it is our 40th year! Being 40 is a strange age, for some, it seems quite youthful and for others, so old. For our learning community, I feel it brings a sense of grounding, we are an established school with roots that run deep and wide. However, we have a huge appetite for innovation, for redesign and for being better. This is the youthful side of being 40, while the core of who we are as a learning community does not shift, we are open to change. This is what will keep us at the forefront of education. This year has brought so many wonderful points of celebration, being re-accredited by the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the International Baccalaureate was a huge undertaking, but such a wonderful achievement. However, having an insatiable appetite we were not satisfied with this and pushed forward to become one of the first schools to achieve the Global Citizenship award from CIS, to become established as a Cervantes centre for teaching Spanish and to be recognized by the British Council for teaching English. This year we have fought to create more opportunities for our students to explore their gifts and talents, both in and outside of the classroom. I hope you enjoy the walk through the events of the year as captured in this yearbook. The CIS team commented on how special we are as a learning community - thank you for being part of it, believing in it, and contributing to it. Best wishes
James Kearney Head of Sotogrande international School

Head of Prim I would like to start by thanking our primary team of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff who throughout this year have inspired, guided and supported the students along their learning journeys. As a school we talk about and believe in having a ‘CAN I’ culture; CAN I standing for ‘Constant And Neverending Improvement’. After an eighteen month self study and an evaluation visit by the International Baccalaureate in October, our Primary School received the following commendations: The teachers for providing a stimulating learning environment sustained by a range of effective teaching and learning strategies. The teachers for encouraging a dynamic and flexible approach to grouping and regrouping of students. The teachers for organising learning environments in which students can work both independently and collaboratively. The school provides students with feedback to inform and improve their learning. The school for using formative assessments in all subject areas to provide regular feedback to students on their learning.
22
SIS Yearbook • 2017/18
These truly are a fantastic set of commendations and as the Primary Head I am privileged to work alongside such a dedicated and committed team, who through critiquing, reflecting and making changes, continuously improve our PYP written, taught and assessed curriculums in order that all our students can achieve their best. A special mention this year also goes to Mr Octavio, Miss Marta, Miss Miren, Miss Marta, Miss Joana, Miss Maria, David, Javi and Miss Jade who all joined and supported the primary teaching team this year. Your new perspectives, contributions, energy and ideas have contributed to this successful year. I would also like to give particular thanks to Clare Cooper for all her work over the years. As a school, we wish Clare all the best as she starts her retirement. As we look back over this year there have been so many events that our primary school has taken part in, it would be impossible to name them all. Some of the highlights are the winter performances from our EC1-P2 students, sports days, swimming galas, inter school sports competitions, the Kindred Project organised sleep-overs, ‘The Dream Factory’ talent competition,’ the expressive arts performances of ‘We Are Monsters’ by P3 and P4 and ‘Shrek’ by P5 and P6 and not
forgetting the culminating event of the wonderful and emotional P6 Graduation and Primary Prize Giving. I think we all agree that the academic year of 2017-18 has once again been another action packed year; a year which which has been filled with new challenges, experiences and achievements. I would like to finish by thanking and congratulating our students. Throughout the year we have watched them open their hearts and minds to the joy of learning, discover their strengths, develop their skills and identify their passions. As a student body you model our values and make us proud to say you are a vital part of our community. To our graduating P6 class of 2018, I wish you all the best in the next stage of your education. Whether it is here with us in MYP or somewhere else in the world, you will never be forgotten in our primary school. Well done, Primary! You should feel extremely proud of all that you have accomplished. I would like to wish the entire Primary community a wonderful and relaxing summer. Enjoy a wellearned rest! Refuel your batteries and I look forward to seeing you in September!

Our Partners
Working with community-based organisations in Ecuador, Morocco, Spain and Uganda, The Kindred Project aims to support them to address challenges by increasing access to and quality of education, as well as developing locally led social enterprises and values of global citizenship.
Hogar Betania has been our local partner since 2013. It is a non-profit association in La Linea, Spain, that helps those at risk of social exclusion to normalise their lives. The centre runs a 1 year residential programme for over 35 people, as well as an overnight homeless shelter with another 25 beds. It also runs a daily soup kitchen feeding over 200 families. They also have a safe house for women and children who are victims of human trafficking and gender violence.

My time there was eventful, to say the least (!) and I wanted to take this opportunity to share my story with those new to this special community and to say some thank yous. In my early days at SIS, I was a very active student and enjoyed competing in many events, especially athletics. I studied diligently and enjoyed the IB curriculum. In late 2010 I began to experience severe pain in my lower back and hamstring area, rather like sciatica. This went on for 2 months before my dad said enough was enough and insisted medical staff performed an MRI scan. In January 2011 I was devastatingly diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. The tumour was the size of a tennis ball in my spine between L3 and L4. There was no time to waste, and I was rushed to the children’s oncology hospital in Sevilla where I immediately had emergency surgery. SIS provided both an ambulance and a nurse to accompany me to Sevilla.
98
SIS Yearbook • 2017/18
Over the next 3 months, I endured 6 cycles of chemotherapy. This reduced the size of the tumour, allowing the surgeon to perform a major back operation to eradicate the source of the primary cancer. As a result, my spine is now supported by a titanium cage and 2 titanium rods. To support my torso I had to wear a body brace for 8 months which added to the discomfort of the horrible chemotherapy side effects. In September 2011 I had a bone marrow transplant and was in isolation for a month, and in hospital for a further month recovering. There was a huge deterioration in my health during this period and I wasn’t allowed to leave my room. My Dad stayed with me during the whole month, he wasn’t allowed to leave the isolation room either. Throughout the whole of December 2011, I had radiation treatment and finished my treatment on 23rd December just in time for Christmas. I wanted to be home as much as possible during this phase, so my parents drove 10,000km that month so I could attend daily radiation treatment. I got the all clear and everything was great for 2 ½ years. Regaining my strength, seeing my hair grow back and being reunited with my friends and family was great. Even going back to school and studying again was a pleasure!, but also a challenge as I was susceptible to infections, so often left school due to illness.
On Sunday, May 18th, 2014, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia This was in the middle of my final exams at SIS, I missed completing these, along with my graduation ceremony that so happened to be on my 18th birthday. Having to come to terms with the thought of all that treatment, sickness and pain all over again was a huge challenge. I had another year of chemotherapy, and another bone marrow transplant donated by my amazing brother Robbie. Thankfully I made a full recovery and was home in time for Christmas at the end of December 2014. Once again I began the journey to build strength, gain weight and get back into normal life. During my treatment I witnessed so much suffering by many children of all ages. I also recognised how many families struggled to support their children who had cancer. My mind was set, I wanted to do something about this so I set up my own charity, Danii’s Children’s Cancer Charity. So far my charity has raised in excess of Euro 180,000 which has helped children’s dreams come true on trips of a lifetime, helped give needy families financial support and purchased vital equipment for the children’s oncology unit I was treated in.
Sotogrande International School and the school community has been amazing in supporting both me and The Danii Children’s Cancer Charity. Events such as the Summer Beach BBQ, the Santa Run and the Soto Sol Walk have grown into brilliant days out, and are always supported by singers and musicians from SIS. Bandana days were held at school, and Miss Eliza even shaved her head to raise money! I wasn’t just the support for my charity I wanted to thank SIS for. The support from staff right throughout the school during those very difficult times for both me and my brother Robbie was very welcome and much appreciated. I’m happy to say that I am currently working as Gym Instructor and Fitness Class leader in the UK and will finish my degree in Nutrition at Leeds University UK in June 2019. I still have regular tests and check-ups with my consultants both in Sevilla and also in Leeds, but rest assured I ’m in excellent health and physically very strong. My charity work continues. Please visit www.daniicharity.com and on Facebook Danii charity to find out more and to donate.

Head of Midd Apparently, life begins at 40! Well, as it’s Sotogrande International School’s 40th birthday in 2018, we should look forward to a very exciting future!
I often ask students and colleagues, “What positive difference can you make to our community, and what will be your enduring legacy?”
What makes this school so special, unique, challenging and successful? Many say it is the fact that no year is ever the same at Soto! Families and teachers come and go in our community and life-long friends and colleagues progress to the next chapter of their lives. With change, new and inspiring adventures emerge.
During my previous role as Leader of Learning Physical and Health Education, it was a dream to be able to heat and cover our pool. In 2017, our dream became reality. Thank you to everybody who made this possible. We can now swim every day of the year. The warm water provides a comfortable and enjoyable environment for our younger students to learn how to swim safely. It has created an opportunity for our more advanced swimmers to excel and increase personal health and fitness levels. It has also provided a venue for our local San Roque club to coach regional elite swimmers.
This academic year will be remembered as the year of inspections and visits. Our school community has been scrutinised from all angles by a variety of external and independent bodies. Those visitors provided us with some resoundingly positive feedback. Together we should be proud, as Sotogrande is now firmly established as a leader on the global map of exceptional international schools. This yearbook is an illustration of our students achieving their dreams through academic successes, community and service events, school trips, sports results, arts exhibitions, music and drama performances. There are also some very interesting and amusing memories from our graduating class of 2018!
104
SIS Yearbook • 2017/18
Our commitment to experiential and service learning continued in 2017-18 with middle school students visiting many areas of Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba, Huelva, Costa de la Luz and numerous local venues. Experiences also took students further afield to Uganda, Morocco and Ecuador for service learning trips. MUN travelled to Arnhem, Malmo, Prague and Budapest, Drama to Berlin, Language Acquisition to London and Paris, football tours to Portugal and our Formula One design and technology
team competed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Exciting new ‘chance in a lifetime’ opportunities are also planned for our students, with Duke of Edinburgh participants due to experience a challenging expedition to the Himalayan Mountains and our Film Studies students preparing for a trip to Hollywood! Personal highlights from this year included Christmas staff music videos that were rather amusing; our annual Polar Bear Challenge proved more difficult to get out of the pool rather than dive in due to the new, lovely warm water; the highly competitive staff triathlon, and our annual Dougie Stewart Memorial and Alumni Event, which was enjoyed by more former staff and students than ever. We are extremely proud of the impact our SIS students - past and present - have played in our 40 years of growing success. Hopefully, we will all revisit this yearbook time and again at different stages of our lives. Over the years, our graduates have proved they can achieve anything with hard work and dedication! As former world number one golfer, Gary Player stated,“The harder you work, the luckier you get”. How lucky will you be?

''What a magical bunch M1 students have been this year! You have embraced challenges with courage, thought and commitment, never tiring in your passion to succeed. Together, we’ve enjoyed countless rich and varied adventures on the journey through M1. You have proved, yet again, that SIS is a very special ‘family’ indeed, one that is held together through a joint belief that learning is a balance of self-discovery and sharing, respect and independence, and personal responsibility and accountability. Each one of you is unique and an inspiration to others (teachers included!). You are “people of accomplishment” and as Leonardo Da Vinci said, “people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them, they went out and happened to things.”

"They told me and I forgot it, I saw it and I understood it, I did it and I learned it" Confucius The Community Project gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs and address those needs through Service Learning. Engaging students in a sustained, indepth inquiry leading to service as action in either the school, local or global community. M3 students produced some excellent work this year, including assemblies on global issues for Primary and Secondary students, games and sports promoting healthy lifestyles, video tutorials for the community, a visit to the hospital in Gibraltar, volunteering in Centro de ancianos and animal shelters and much more! Upon finishing the project students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences and the skills they have used, helping them on their journey to become independent learners. Congratulations to you all!

Bonding Trips Middle years
At the start of each academic year, our MYP and Diploma students take part in bonding trips. The focus of these trips is to provide an opportunity for students to build friendships, and for the advisors and pastoral leaders of each year group to get to know the students. The trips help to create a strong sense of group identity and are always exciting, rewarding and fun!

140
SIS Yearbook • 2017/18
It has been an exciting year in Science, filled with experiments and fun learning experiences. Some of the highlights included teachers burning methane in their hands to open a discussion on combustion, students investigating the best hydrogen/ oxygen mix for rocket fuel, heart dissections on Valentine's day and collaborating with a NASA scientist on a research project about gravity. We have also had fantastic IDUs making links with Design to see the value of scientific testing in product design, as well as linking with Maths to analyse evidence at a crime scene. Of course, the highlight for a number of our Diploma Science students was skydiving to investigate Newton's Laws of motion! 141 SIS Yearbook • 2017/18
Have you ever wondered what it is like for your sensory perception to take over from your intellectual understanding of the laws of physics? Students from Sotogrande International School were thrown out of an airplane at 5000M (with a parachute and an instructor) where for a brief moment in time they felt the full force of Newton's second law whilst the first law got to work. Very soon the third law was at work when terminal velocity was reached as the students hurtled through the air at almost 200 kms/hour. It is one thing to study these laws and another to actually feel them with your senses. The adrenaline rush of the free fall was then replaced by a beautiful, peaceful descent after the canopy opened and the students gently drifted towards the earth, passing through some cotton wool cumulus cloud before touching down.

The Duke of Edinburgh program seeks to initiate students in adventurous activities where they are taken out of their comfort zone and have to fend for themselves in the wild on an adventurous journey. Sotogrande students have been preparing for their journey in mountainous terrain by studying and employing the various skills that will keep them safe when they find themselves in the wild, on their own, and in a setting with a certain amount of objective danger. This year they have done treks in the Sierra de las Nieves, La Concha, the forest near Algeciras and in Jimena which all belong to the Alcornocales National Park. As well as expedition training and the expedition itself, the students have to develop skills independently, keep up physical activity and do service for others and the community.

''The transition from MYP5 to DP1 was memorable, productive and fun with two days of bonding and experiential learning at the beginning of the year in Caùos de Meca. Opportunities were given to gain a deeper understanding into the CAS programme, establish new friendships and maintain existing relationships, through a myriad of activities including beach trekking, bonding games, designing belly boards, culminating in preparing and cooking paella. Students have impressed with their commitment and responsibility to mentor younger students and become involved with The Kindred Project and Student Council, discovering and following their passions. My lasting memory will be the students organising a spectacular evening of musical entertainment and culinary delights for Kiss the Casbah. They were confident, professional and truly inspirational. The money raised was taken with students on their CAS trip to Asni, where they helped make a difference to the lives of the Berber community in Morocco.

HISTORY
TRIP
We arrived early Friday, at 3 am but managed to make our 10 am presentations on law and international relations at Southbank University. This was then followed by an excellent interactive lecture by a history professor at City University on the historical development of human rights. The students scaffolded WW1 essays in pairs using the wealth of source material at the museum, before going on a historical river cruise in the afternoon.

The Class of 2018 started off their journey by getting to know the whole year group at the start of D1, nearly two years ago now, on the beaches and campsite of CaĂąos de Meca. They then plunged headlong into their version of the Diploma programme, realising how much more academically rigorous this inevitably was. By Christmas, they were well ensconced in their courses, while still making time for activities of various kinds regardless of whether or not they counted for CAS! In March a substantial group made the trek to Asni, Morocco, to learn more about life there, and help out in various ways. After this, it was rapidly onwards to IAs, EEs, and D1 exams. Into D2, and the culmination of various types of coursework; trips were fewer, workloads heavier, with some cracks in armour appearing. With support from each other, and staff, onwards they went, ever closer towards those final examinations. And now, the heavy lifting is done, graduation ongoing, and an actual summer vacation ahead, followed by the next chapter in their journey! Congratulations, and the best of luck!

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Portugal Trip: Portugal football trip was a phenomenal experience spending time with my friends, doing what I like the most, playing football. I enjoyed the trip a lot from playing fifa, sauna, pushing each other in freezing water, good Portuguese food, racing on the one of the biggest go-karting tracks in Europe, watching movies. It was great to share a room with one of my best friends Ali, blasting our Moroccan music. I still remember the last day the hotel's kitchen was closed, so we decided to go to the grocery store and get some salmon and pasta; Mr Gibson called us out in the morning to clean our mess. The trip was a blast. Asni Trip: Asni trip was one of my greatest experience during my SIS years. I spent a great time with my best friends Hamza Kharraz and Abdullah Gashlan. It was the most humbling and productive trip I ever had. We did multiple things organising games to entertain local children, trekking for 15km, helping Hassan with his speech and adding my own knowledge about Islam to clear misconceptions for my classmates and teachers, helping prepare dinner and road mending. The Moroccan hammam was great; I didn't want to at first but Hamza talked me into going, we ended up staying longer than everyone else. I loved the 15-minute banter that we all had before going to bed. The cooks in the house did me proud as a Moroccan. The scenery was breathtaking;huge props to Mr Wix for this trip - I would love to revisit these memories by going again. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Study International Business in the great city of London and see where the city of opportunities takes me.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My three years at SIS have been full of fantastic memories, and I can only share a few of them here. The Christmas Fair in 2016 was definitely memorable, as I spent the day wandering around in a giant Olaf (from Frozen) costume, the comedic highlight of this being my own mother not recognizing me. My time spent in KP during D1 and some of D2 was also a blast, no matter how unproductive we were at times. The best moment came when I arrived to volunteer during Fireworks Night, and ended up working for the PTA popcorn stand, rather than the KP popcorn stand, much to Jamie’s dismay. Overall SIS has been a fabulous place to spend my highschool years, and will not be forgotten anytime soon! PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I will be studying international relations at a university (TBD) somewhere in the US. I am also interested in entrepreneurship.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Having been a student at SIS since the beginning, there are too many memories to fit in this space. Among these are the wakeboarding trips that I have been on throughout the years and going skydiving. I would recommend the opportunity to skydive to anyone who is considering it. Jumping out of a plane isn’t as daunting as it seems and I would definitely go again, given the chance. Going on the Asni trip in D1 was such an eye-opener, despite the bipolar showers and my hands feeling like they were going to fall off from the cold when painting a mural in the evening. Going on the mega-hike was a bit tragic but all of these memories allow us to look back and laugh at the great time we had. I can’t forget the fun times that we had during “study periods”. Frees were some of the best times, spent mostly in the fish bowl, and where most of our quotes come from. They were a time for us to gush about our new text books, study guides and cue cards because we’re all nerds. I can’t fully sum up my time at SIS but these are among my best memories. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Following graduation and a summer of plans with friends, I’m hoping to study graphic design at Leeds University. After that, I might take a gap year to travel as I won’t be taking one before university. I want to make the most of my time in Spain and seeing friends before I move to the UK.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: The 2016 Ecuador Expedition has been a life-changing experience for me, and being part of the first expedition ever made it even more nerve-racking and exciting. Living in the jungle, being in Estero de Platano (my favorite place to this date), working with the kids in Abraham Calacazon school, learning about a completely different culture, and being able to help the families surrounding the Tsachila cultural centre have definitely helped me develop as a person and given me the opportunity to see the world through a different pair of eyes. I am very grateful for having been able to take this opportunity on board and I would take it another thousand times.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: In the short term, AKA September, study graphic design and communication design in Madrid (only after hopefully having the best and longest summer of my life). In the long term, I hope to travel as much as possible (like the other 99% of students graduating), find a job I am passionate about and devoted to, and continue competing with my horse in eventing.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Being in this school for 15 years has allowed to create unforgettable memories and help shape the person that I am today. This school has given me so many opportunities to learn about myself and participate in many events that I would have never imagined I could be part of. I have been able to take part in amazing theatre productions like Bugsy Malone and Moulin Rouge which have been such wonderful, lively experiences. I have also been able to travel on numerous trips like going to Paris in M5 or to Copenhagen in D1 for MUN where I learnt so much and came back overjoyed. I have also confronted my fears and jumped off a plane on the skydiving trip. This school has given me life changing experiences that I will take with me into this next step of my life. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: After graduating, I plan on making the most of my summer by travelling, going to festivals and spending as much time as I can with my friends. I will then start university in Imperial College London or in La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia here in Spain depending on what my heart tells me at the last minute, to initiate my studies in Biotechnology/Chemistry. I am very excited to start this new stage in my life and hopefully be able to grow and learn more living my best life with music by my side.

When In Robert’s Mock Solo Theatre presentation he says: “Miss, don’t you realise I just made it all up in the moment because I don’t have anything” whilst Mrs. Barling is trying to give him feedback, we all cried with laughter for a solid 5 minutes after that. When the whole Business Class started laughing because Mrs. Pinnock couldn’t stop laughing. The Theatre performances: Collaborative Project, Solo Theatre, Bugsy Malone… When in the Theatre workshop (OSC), the teacher was hitting all of our buts with a newspaper and we were all running away from him. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: My plans for the future involve to study at Boston College whilst playing Division 1 golf. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: After seven years, it seems almost impossible to pick out my best memories at this school, but some stand out as those that really shaped who I am. The M1 balloon debate was the first time I really stood up and spoke in public, and performing How to Save a Life in M4 was when I first experienced the thrill of going on stage. El Cañuelo witnessed me first pick up a guitar, and be me, in the purest sense, welcoming me back, and touching me in a different way each time. Our M5 original songs were a first attempt at expressing ourselves, and organising and performing Indie Night an incredible challenge and opportunity. Finally, our D1 expedition to Asni was inspiring, heartwarming, and liberating in many senses. No words could ever fully describe these memories - they simply made me who I am today. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: To move on to study law in UCL, to keep writing and playing music, to travel and discover as many places and wonderful people as I can, to write a book someday, and to keep learning, always.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Trying to fit the last 15 years of my school life seems way too difficult to manage; it all dates back to when I was 2 and didn’t speak a word of English nor could I imagine I’d eventually become the Spanglisher I am today. This school has provided me with amazing experiences like Asni or the Copenhagen MUN conference and has allowed me to form lifelong friendships. Discovering my passion for drama and music has been crucial for my self expression these years and it has truly taught me a lot about myself. I could go on about “chodou chodou”, Lee Lee, Christmas or France in our Theatre CP, Kahoot & Geoguessr with Mark, “Mr Karneh” or inteGers in Maths or about Mr.Lang's love for Canada, but the truth is, for someone who talks faster than they can think, putting all their memories into such a small space is impossible, SO moral of the story : make the most of your time here, your last two years will fly by and you’ll want to look back and remember them as some of the most memorable years of your life; I definitely will. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I will be interrailing Europe with my friends during the month of June and will then go into performing arts to audition for Stranger Things, but as much as I’d like for that to be true I’ll have to content myself with studying Psychology at The Autonomous University of Madrid or the University of Bath.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I have been a student at SIS from the age of 4, when I joined in Reception. I never would have thought that 14 years on, I would be graduating from the place where it all started. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that my experience at SIS has been unforgettable and has moulded me into the person that I am today. One of the trips that stands out most from my time at this school is the Asni Expedition, where we were given the opportunity to be a part of a completely different culture whilst opening our eyes to the realisation of the difficult circumstances many endure on a daily basis. Another trip that brings back some good memories is that of the Barcelona Football Tournament back in the early years of Secondary. The history trip to London is also one of the more recent memorable trips I have of my time at SIS. I feel that the last few years have flown by and it feels unimaginable that my time at SIS has finally come to an end. I am proud to say that I have met friends for life during my time here and would like to thank all my teachers for making my time here as exceptional as it has been over the years. I appreciate all the opportunities that SIS has given me and hope to carry the skills I have acquired from 2004 with me for the rest of my life. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: With regards to my future plans, I hope to be studying at the University of Exeter and eventually go on and do a Masters elsewhere, potentially in London. I also hope to eventually find some time to travel around the world and immerse myself in different cultures. Regardless of where I end up, I am looking forward to what lies ahead in my future endeavours and if it all works out the way I hope it does, then I’ll be doing something I enjoy whilst making loads of money at the same time.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Being at SIS for 15 years means I have made countless memories which ultimately makes it hard for me to choose some of my favourite ones. The wakeboarding trips, the school shows and going skydiving have been some of the biggest highlights over the years. The 6 hour hike alongside the bipolar showers on the D1 Asni trip were slightly traumatic but still make me laugh to this day. Just remember if Mr Wix ever says that you will be hungry in Asni, be prepared for the complete opposite. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to take part in all of these trips and experiences. Throughout the two years in Diploma, the frees or shall I say ‘study periods’ have been one of the biggest perks. Aside from all of the laughs, it was a time to show off our revision guides and cue cards, making us the ultimate try hards. None of these memories can begin to sum up my time here at SIS. The last two years fly by and before you know it, it is time to graduate. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: While I have only been at the school for just 4 years, I’ve had the opportunity to make some unforgettable memories and form lasting friendships here. Skydiving, Asni and the bonding trips centre my happiest times over the last few years, despite being brought to tears on numerous occasions because of the many painful hikes. Having moved around significantly prior to coming to Spain, I can safely say that I would choose nowhere else to finish my schooling and spend my final summer before starting the new chapter of my life in England next year.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I’m hoping to study Graphic & Communication Design at the University of Leeds in September, to eventually secure a job in branding or visual marketing.

Moreover, I am planning to start a modelling career soon and take it as a part-time job. I also want to continue working with my music producer and see whether things will work out for me.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: In the summer of 2016, the school had their first trip to Ecuador, the land of no wifi and millions of mosquitos. This was an amazingly unforgettable trip, especially because I travelled there with friends. Whilst I was there, the community we interacted with was so kind and they made me open my eyes as to how these kinds of communities can still live in a place like the Amazon rainforest and not be affected by any of today’s issues. My last year here at SIS has been absolutely unforgettable. I just want to say thank you to all my new friends that i’ve made over the past 9 months. You people mean so much to me, you have given me so many memories and I will miss not going to school together.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: My Immediate plan directly after exams is to have a relaxing summer holiday in Spain. I am also planning on making more videos for my youtube channel and to stream more (twitch.tv/crinegang). My plan for uni is to hopefully go to Spain for an economics degree for about 3-4 years, which is really close to home (I still need somebody to do my washing). My other option is to take an economics degree in Netherlands. I am also planning on making best friends with the people I meet in uni, and that we will hang out a lot.

Even so, I guess the 2016 Back to School Party, Prom 2k17 and the History trip to London really stand out for me. In true IB fashion, the question of ‘who am I?’ or ‘who do I want to be?’ tends to play on your mind quite a bit, so I must say Mr. Green’s talks about life with Sophie were key for my IB survival.

It was there where I truly realised I wanted to become an engineer.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My best memories during my time at SIS include when I volunteered in Uganda, and when I shadowed doctors with Robbie in Tanzania back when I still wanted to study medicine. I also went to Sri Lanka with my girlfriend Oriana, which was a whole new experience for me and a long way to meet “the dad”. Of course not all my best memories were so far away from home. I enjoyed going to the beach and throwing a deck of cards into the air with Oriana and Robbie and going to dinner at Lombardo’s. Going out into the campo with Teddy and our motorbikes was something I loved to do as well.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Before university I’m going to go for a 3 week trip to Vietnam and a 2 week volunteering trip to a wildlife sanctuary in Namibia. Next year I plan to study Sustainable Development, I don’t yet know what country or university that will be in but The Netherlands, Scotland and England are where I have applied. After I get my bachelor I hope to go on and get my master, get a few years work experience and start my own consultancy. I hope to find work that will let me travel the world so I can observe, conserve and protect our environment for future generations. Who knows maybe I’ll end up going in a completely different direction with my life and none of what I’ve just said will happen, but I’m ok with that.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: The journey of these two years of IB has been an incredible experience. The most precious gift that I take from this school is the passion for music that I found here. Not only did I get to sing with an amazing brass band, but I have reached a point where music has become an essential part of my life. I can also say that being part of the Kindred Project has given me a different perspective on life. I never realised how amazing it is to have a voice in charity events. One of the highlights was raising money for Asni and discussing with the organisation where the proceeds were going to. Furthermore, MUN in Copenhagen is also one of my best memories of these two years. Being able to participate in this trip and meet students from all around the world while simulating the UN assemblies was an unforgettable experience. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I plan to move to the Netherlands to complete a bachelor in Liberal Arts and Sciences. I am thrilled to finally be able to combine my philosophical thoughts with science. However, after this I will probably sign up for an intergalactic trip to a black hole for scientific research (if only this were possible). Without any doubt, my future plans will hold a lot of traveling.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I’ve very literally grown up at this school, having started here 15 years ago my memories take me way back to when I was 3 years old and my hardest class of the day was nap time. The highlights of my time at SIS have definitely and majorly revolved around school trips, from the yearly trips to the farms where we learned how to cook bread and milk a cow, to the many bonding trips, to the history and drama trips to London. One of the most memorable trips is that of El Cañuelo to which I have gone repeatedly the past 4 years, not only was it the place where I first picked up a guitar but also where I first wrote my own music. Taking part in the many concerts and school musicals, from singing in a choir at La Cañada, to organizing my own ‘Indie Night’ with Carmen, to playing Blousey in Bugsy Malone, have made my passion towards music and drama develop beyond what I thought was possible. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: My plans for the near future are to study English Literature at either Kings or Exeter. And after that, well I’m not really sure where I’ll end up but I definitely want to take my guitar with me and travel as much as I can for a few years.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: The Uganda Expedition 2017 was definitely one of the highlights of my four years at SIS, the expedition itself was incredible, it is almost impossible to put it into words until today. The longer I am back here, the more I am understanding what it is that I have learned. The children over in Nabugabo showed me what happiness is. The teachers showed me what appreciation is. The community showed me what pride is. In 2016 I travelled to Ecuador with the Kindred Project. When everyone came together, it became obvious to me how unifying a common culture can be. The people we met during the expedition welcomed us with open arms, respecting our culture, whilst introducing us to theirs, will all be memories that last forever. Y una cosa de la que me siempre acordaré, son los viajes en coche con nuestro mejor conductor Grelis y su profundo amor por la música Latinoamericana. I will never forget the famous boarding Walk of Shame, the ‘inner/outer squad’ debate and the 101 movie nights with Leonie and Natalie, where we never managed to finish a movie before falling asleep. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I will be studying Environmental Science with Marine Biology at the University of Stirling. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My best memories at SIS were those spent away from the classroom like traveling by plane and by car. Simple things like going to the beach or a cheeky trip to Hairy Lemon made a lasting impact on my life. And big trips to visit my family (often accompanied with my best friend Kati or my boyfriend Max) connected both my past and present. Although I arrived two months late into D1, the student body in our year has made me feel at home and I hope that my repetitive jokes and sarcasm created a genuine smile here and there. Traveling aside, IB is tough and one thing boarding has taught me is the importance of keeping in touch with my family when the days get stressful. Not only are weekends and trips fun, but even the hectic days that are filled with countless deadlines are made bearable with a face call from my two incredible parents. I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for them, Kati, Max, and the friends here I have met along the way. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Next year I plan to study literature, creative writing, and journalism. I am not certain which university I will be going to but my choices are New England, US as well as Paris, France. I am keeping my options open and am also interested in exploring film editing and psychology. I would like to have the opportunity to travel and work in conflict zones while pursuing a journalist career.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Going to Ecuador last summer was one of the highlights of my time at SIS. However, in seven years a lot of things have happened, I remember trips with the football squad to Barcelona and Italy back in MYP. Bonding trips at the beginning of each year were always fun. I have grown here and the people I’ve known here have shaped me into who I am. It’s been a good spell but just like anyone at this age (especially after 7 years in SOTOGRANDE) I can’t wait to move on. Personally, what I will remember about SIS is learning that it’s okay to make mistakes and to embrace whatever it is that you are (Shame not everyone acknowledges that), that I will take with me to the next stage of my life along with a fistful of memories and friends. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: This summer I will travel, go to festivals and finally get to see my friends without the upcoming exam or the next due assignment leading the conversation. After that grasp every single chance that I get to travel. Go to more festivals, run marathons, read good books and watch good movies. If I have some time left I will get a degree in Telecommunications engineering in Madrid to satisfy western standards of accomplishment, then get a job so I can get my own money to travel. Carry on learning more things besides Physics, Maths and Computer Science. Getting my driver license, convincing my father of giving up the van, profit from that process. Become a legend keeping my promise of not dying at 27. Stop planning ahead of time. Have I mentioned that I want to travel? Aprender a tocar la guitarra para que no solo parezca un ‘Perroflauta’.

It would be impossible to name all of the teachers and colleagues that have contributed and impacted my life until now. K. Apart from these small everyday occurrences, forming part of the KP and having had the opportunity of partaking in charity expeditions and trips, such as Asni, have not only expanded my ideologies and perceptions, but have also encouraged me to seek adventures and challenge myself, while aiming to create a positive impact on those around me. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Pursue my studies in Business Management and Economics in Scotland and become the CEO of a successful company. It has been an eye opening experience starting with all of the opportunities I have been able to benefit from. One of my best memories was definitely going to Asni with the year group. They treated us like family and I loved playing with the kids and immersing myself in their culture. Another great experience was singing for people in need with the choir. Being able to light up someone’s day and see them dance around with a huge smile on their face felt amazing, especially whilst doing something I love. And third of all, the friends I have made are people that will always be in my life. They are so open minded and caring and I don’t know what I would have done without them these past two years. A fascinating three week expedition to Ecuador, exploring the diverse landscape and culture of the unique Tsachila, will also resonate with me forever. Many other Incredible opportunities which I am deeply grateful for, but I will greatly miss many aspects of my time here at the school which one can often take for granted. The long, loud, passionate political debates in English, planning environmental and sustainable breakthroughs, inexplicable great laughs during maths and huge, inspirational fun with our theatre group and performances which I will really cherish. It is however, all the great people that I have been lucky enough to share all these memories with, who are the reason they will be with me forever.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: I plan to take a disgracefully productive and worthwhile GAP year in order to satisfy my insatiable appetite for travel and incredible life experiences. After that I hope to study in the UK and learn about sustainable development and politics or who knows; maybe I’ll turn to acting. Whatever I achieve, it will undoubtedly have been influenced by my special time at SIS!

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: It’s incredibly difficult to summarise 15 years worth of amazing memories at SIS. However I can easily say that having grown up in such an art-driven school has shaped who am I now and has undeniably nurtured my passion for music. During 2015 and 2016 myself and other music students were given the opportunity to visit El Cañuelo to create and perform music with our friends and teachers, giving us the chance to spend a whole weekend with our friends doing what we loved. Having performed in shows and annual parties always made me look forward to the start of a new school year. Visiting Asni as our D1 trip was another highlight of my years at SIS. We were provided with the chance to work together to do volunteer work, which I believe made us a much closer and integrated year group. Finally, my friends. I am incredibly grateful to have met such wonderful people, whom I hope to continue making amazing memories with in the near future. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: To pursue a career in music after studying Creative Music Technology at the University of Surrey, UK.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Being in SIS for about 4 and a half years, I have experienced so many wonderful memories in a “short” amount of time. One of these memories will have to be skydiving in Seville with the best, craziest teachers and my closest friends. The feeling of adrenaline and completing one of the top objectives on my bucket list was incredible. Other amazing memories consist of playing mini golf in Mr. Barling’s room to release stress from exams, and definately the bonding trips… Oh lord, the bonding trips... Having managed to fracture my ankle in my first ever BT, it’s safe to say the others were more successful. Spending time with my class in the beaming, hot sun for several hours resulted in sharing After Sun and stories around a fire. There have been so many memorable moments in SIS, and a part of me is sad to say goodbye (hopefully).
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: After the IB, I plan on having one of the best and most relaxed summers of my life. After summer is over, I will be heading off to England to study Psychology. That’s what I’ve planned out so far, but knowing myself and my indecisiveness, all of this could potentially evolve into something else. I’ll most likely be influenced by a TV show to change my degree, such as Grey's Anatomy... Is it too late to become a brain surgeon?

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I started my journey into the Spanish culture 3 years ago when I enrolled at SIS, the memories came in like reveries. Overall my best memories have always risen from the school trips that I've taken part in, from the night train and not complying with health and fire safety regulations by shoving 30+ kids into a room meant for 4. With notable mention to the countries I traveled to for Model United Nations, making friends from all over Europe while in heated debates about current issues and all to be remembered. What we had done as a school over a “bottle of Fanta” (-Mr. Barling). But my best memory has to be the 3 weeks in Ecuador, dealing with the amount of things we had to do in such a short time and all in Spanish. My final take away from my time in SIS is Don’t ever be afraid, everyone is here to help. Thank you!
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: Starting the summer I will be traveling around as much as possible meeting friends old and new, bonding over the sweet time you have without the worry of another assignment but that's summer. For university I will be in Austria studying a Bachelor of Science degree in Business at the University of Modul, all the while working as a bartender. Meanwhile my future plans after University will be P.L.E.A.S.E and maybe finish my book I started in Asni.

T
he PTA has had another successful year. We had a great Back to School Event, and an amazing Firework Night, with over 1200 attendees. This was followed by a very successful Christmas Fairthis time by the beach! ¨It was not all fundraising though. We have volunteered at Sports events, and anywhere else we were needed. We also held a fabulous White Party for parents- a great way to finish the year. So what have we done with the money we raised? We have supported students on trips, and with their own events. We have supported the T-Shirts for the Choir Tour and Drama Production. We bought several new benches for the playground, and became the first sponsor of this year’s F1 in Schools team. A huge thank you to the hard working committee, and to all of our wonderful volunteers- most of whom do so willingly!
