2013 YEARBOOK
THROUGHOUT THE PAST YEAR, THE SOULSVILLE FOUNDATION CELEBRATED REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS FOR ALL THREE OF OUR VIBRANT ENTITIES: THE SOULVSILLE CHARTER SCHOOL, THE STAX MUSIC ACADEMY, AND THE STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC. We’ve continued our mission to revive the spirit of the Soulsville community and the legacy of Stax through these programs. This year we joyfully observe the tenth anniversary of the Stax Museum. As we keep working to enhance the future of Soulsville, we hope you’ll enjoy looking back at some of our latest high notes.
IN 2003, THE WORLD’S FIRST AND ONLY
FULL-FLEDGED SOUL MUSIC MUSEUM OPENED ITS DOORS
Since then, the Stax Museum has welcomed hundreds of thousands of people, sharing the story of American soul music, with particular emphasis on Stax Records and “The Memphis Sound,” through its 17,000 square feet of exhibits and vast collection of memorabilia, along with live music events, special exhibits, panel discussions, and various community outreach programs.
National Geographic names Memphis one of the Best of 2013 must-visit cities in the world and cites the
STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC AS BEING “AT THE FOREFRONT” OF MEMPHIS’ REVITALIZATION.
Approximately 9,000 people attend the third annual Stax to the Max music and arts festival at the Stax Museum, presented by ArtsMemphis.

Since 2000, the Academy has been serving primarily at-risk youth from throughout the Memphis community with its
UNIQUE BRAND OF MENTORING EXPERIENCES, HIGH-QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. STAX MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS ITS FIRST TWO BLACK HISTORY MONTH CONCERTS at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts with special guest Larry Dodson of the Bar-Kays. Five performances draw more than 10,000 people.
In the 9th grade, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Stax Music Academy after-school program. It was there that I first learned how to play with and feed off of others. I remember crying in the beginning because while I had seen music as my closest friend — it had always come naturally — now it was getting hard. Through this, I learned the important lesson that if I stopped resisting help, I could become so much more. - Former Stax Music Academy Student
