DIRECTIONS Thy' spenl;in.g role is not to be treated in a usual measured recitation style in which the voice sim p ly becomes another percussion instrument. In this piece the actress has only entrance points (designated by arrows in the score) for the first and last epigrams of each movement. The spacing ns well as rhythmic or dynamic interpretation of the ren-iinirg epigrams is left undetermined and up to the discretion and taste of the actress. Any remaining epigrams maybe spoken in the fermata'of the last movement. First Moynent 1. Standing by my bed In gold sandals Dawn the very Moment awoke me.

2. The nightengale's The soft spoken Announcer of Spring's presence.

3. At nnon time

4. I confess I love that Which caresses Me. I believe Love has his Share in the Sun's brilliance And virtue.

When the earth is Bright with flaming Heat falling straight down The cricket sets Up a high pitched Singing in his wings.

5. Day in, day out I hunger and I struggle. ,Segonsl Movemtat 6. The evening star Is the most Beautiful Of all stars .

7. In the spring twilight The full moon is shining; Girls take their places As though around an alter.

8. And their feet move Rhythmically, as tender Feet of Cretan girls Danced once around an Alter of love, crushing A circle in the soft Smooth flowering grass.

9. Now, while we dance Come here to us Gentle Gaiety, Revelry, Radiance And you, r'uses With lovely hair.

10. When they were tired Night rained her Thick dark sleep Upon their eyes.

11. Pain penetrates Ye drop By drop.

12. Tonight I've watched The moon and then The Pleides Go down . The night is half gone now; Youth goes; I am in ;bed Alone.

14. We know this much Death is an evil; We have the gods Word for it; they too Would die if death Were a good thing.

16. I have no complaints; Prosperity that the Golden Muses Gave me was no delusion; Dead I won't be forgotten.

13. Rich as you are Death will finish You; afterwards no One will remember Or want you; you Had no share int The Pierian roses. You will flitter Invisable among the Indistinct dead In Hell's palace Darting fitfully.

15. You may forget but let me tell you this: Some one In some future time Will think of us.
