Diwali, the festival of light, is widely celebrated festival in India. With loads of fire cracker and light, this festival is celebrated with ample joy and enthusiasm by people of all age group. People buy new clothes and decorate their houses with multitude colors of rangoli. Rangoli for diwali is must, without it the festival of light is incomplete. Colors and rangoli are interwoven. During Diwali festival rangoli is elaborately designed in the entrance of every house to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, Hindu Goddess of wealth. Besides creative expression of art, they were also considered as a symbol of good luck. Rangoli, a Sanskrit word, is a folk art from India, in which beautiful patterns are created on floor in living rooms or courtyard using colored rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. Rangoli also expresses cultural mannerism and hospitality that we possess by traditions. Creation of rangoli is not everyone’s forte as it requires certain amount of skill and ingenuity. This ancient art form is believed to be originated from the Indian state of Maharashtra, from where it gradually dispersed in the rest of the country. Rangoli is named differently in different Indian states like in South India it is called kolam, mandana in Rajasthan and alpana in Bengal. Rangolis are simple two dimensional to three dimensional designs. Freehand use of vivid colored powders is made while making a rangoli. Just like rangoli, another integral part of diwali celebration is giving away gifts. Exchange of diwali gifts with your near and dear ones symbolizes victory over good and evil. Today Diwali gift is much more than just giving traditionally decorated sweets. It is also celebrated with good food. For foodies like me and others if we receive gorgeous gourmet gifts, nothing in the world will matter. Gifting an innovative box of cupcakes that are healthy and preservative free can not beat any precious gifts.
